    Definitely a camera for product photography! No unnecessary gimmicks - just pure shots and that's it!

      If you buy a camera always ask the person who sells it to you if there are any additional cable chargers and if there are, buy as many as you can. Make sure you have 5 charging cable units for each camera you buy.

      @@wordwarrior2350 Check out Sonys pixel shifting to understand how much better foveon sensor is. As thats what foveon compares to, it does that in single shot. Sadly quattro no longer has a true foveon sensor, and is also using interpolation. But the overall bayer sensor look is quite bad and lacks a lot of detail & color as a lot of the picture is just interpolated.
      Cameras are made for different uses, the "medium format" comparison is only about the shooting style. Foveon sensor is made to produce the best possible image quality, and this is what makes it slower & to have poorer low light performance.
      I think Sigma is going to release a full frame foveon 2020. Lets hope its real foveon, and not some compromise. As full frame real foveon sensor would blow all the current camera systems away in image quality. Even the high end medium format sensors.

    • @Nobody-Nowhere
      @Nobody-Nowhere 4 года назад +2

      @@wordwarrior2350 This is the video "Pixel Shift Multi Shooting | Alpha 7R III | Sony | α" this is what Foveon accomplishes in one shot. And this is the difference in quality compared to bayer sensor. 42MP bayer sensor actually only has 10.5MP (21MP in green channel) worth of real information. So the image is interpolated 4x when it comes out of the camera!
      So any foveon picture has 4x more information than a bayer sensor image. And if you like, you can interpolate it afterwards 4x and you get the same look as from bayer sensor.

    • @Nobody-Nowhere
      @Nobody-Nowhere 4 года назад +2

      @@wordwarrior2350 The last real foveon sensor did 14.8MP image, interpolate that 4x and you got 59.2MP (comparable to blue & red channels in bayer sensor). And at 2x, its 29.6MP (comparable to green channel in bayer sensors). So you definitely can print as large or even larger than with a bayer sensor.
      So if we get a real full frame foveon, it will destroy all bayer sensor cameras in image quality. If it has the same pixel size as the last true foveon, it would already be 34.6MP. At 3x, it would have similar quality as bayer sensor at 103MP image size.
      You can always interpolate foveon image afterwards if you like, but the only way to get full color information from bayer is by pixel shifting. So in this sense, foveon is more flexible.

    • @Nobody-Nowhere
      @Nobody-Nowhere 4 года назад +3

      @@wordwarrior2350I have a Phase One Photophase, its a 8.4 x 10 cm scanner back. Does 36mp of full RGB and it looks great compared to any digital, and the amount you can scale it is amazing. Full RGB digital just is totally different, its like proper digital. Same as B&W sensor, they are just amazingly clear. Bayer just is a really bad solution.
      Get one of those Sigma DP1 pocket cameras, if you can find it cheaply. Thats the last generation that was still real foveon, this quadro is a compromise. Its 14.1MP, but you can scale it up at least 4x without much loss at all. They just scale amazingly well.

      This is NOT medium format film/sensor technology. It is wonderful and great, but it is NOT 24x36 mm 3-layer CMOS tech. I want to see that plus 6X4.5 and 6X7 3-layer technology (Foveon X3). That is really "medium format" photography.

    Great review. Thanks for hitting the nail on the head. I too shoot in the Gorge and have wanted to throw my SD14 in the river a few times when it screws up. But I don't because when you get it right with X3 there is something so special about the shots. You just won't understand it until you experience the look. Especially when you print it big and put it on the wall.

    Vignetting is noticeable.
    Before I ordered my SDQH, I went looking through the manual, and it said, “The SIGMA sd Quattro H incorporates the APS-H sized imager. In order to take full advantage of the capability of the image sensor, it is recommended to use DG lenses (for 35mm full size). It is possible to use DC lenses (for APS-C) in DC Crop Mode, which limits the recording area of the image sensor for APS-C size.”

    I have been shooting SIGMA DSLRS exclusively for about ten years now (since the SD14, though my most recent one is the SD1 Merrill - I haven't even seen the quattro up close) and while you are right that high ISO performance is - in absolute terms - abysmal, I'd say that the noise, while clearly strong and present from ISO 200 upwards, doesn't look as terrible as it does on a Bayer sensor, and up to ISO 800, or on short exposures even 1600, has a distinctly analogue, almost film-grain-y feeling to it. Of course up at ISO 6400 the whole thing becomes an unsightly mess of colour blotches, usable for little more than high abstraction B/W, and only for people with experience in processing X3F format images.
    The thing is though, when the sensor is on it is ON. Analogue I mostly shot slide film, and so I am used to getting the exposure just so. Sigmas aren't your fire-and-forget snapshot cameras, nor your rapide fire sports cameras. They are, as you quite rightly said, for the former medium format photographer, the tinkerer, the "pipe-smoking-photographer" as the late, great Fritz Pölking put it.
    Sigma's ISO rating for the sensor are a bit off though in my experience. It's often better to underexpose a stop or two, which will save your highlights, keep your blacks black, and still allow you to get truckloads of details from the shadows. The Foveon also tends to get a lot noisier on long exposures, so I have gotten away with -3 EV at times and "pushing" the RAW in SPP, which has yielded better results than the "ideal" exposure.
    SIGMAS are not cameras that will instantly give you great photos, but they are well worth getting to know. I wouldn't exchange mine for any camera in their price range, and if someone offered me their full frame kit in echange for all my sigma gear (for whichever reason), I'd probably say no. I might be enticed to part with it for a Hasselblad, Phase One, or something of the sort, but somehow nobody has made me an offer.

      Are you kidding? Foveon noise is barf inducing. Magenta and green streaks impossible to edit and huge banding noise on any flat monotone subject like the sky...

    • @Galf506
      @Galf506 5 лет назад

      @æon Up to the DP2 merrils, yeah. I didn't try the Quattros. But all previous Foveons are known for this. Ever thought why the light fill thing desaturates color? Because foveon is known for magenta and green banding noise.

    • @Galf506
      @Galf506 5 лет назад

      @æon just shoot anything with texture (i.e. a painted wall) and try to recover shadows, the noise will be magenta and green with bands. That's why everyone shoots those cameras at ISO 100 on a tripod...
      If you want to force it to happen, shoot anything at ISO 800, it'll be like recovering a couple of stops from the shadows.
      But that's no biggie. The real issue is getting rid of banding in the sky, which I couldn't do with SPP (just shoot on a sunny day and a lot of sky, you're bound to get banding.)

    • @Federico84
      @Federico84 5 лет назад

      does exposing to the right help with noise?

    • @Galf506
      @Galf506 5 лет назад

      @@Federico84 No, it doesn't have the DR to save highlights. The real solution is shooting it like you have a roll of slide film: anything beyond 1 stop over or under and your shot is toast. Foveon is a bit better than that, but it's better to shoot it like slide film.

      BBnose if you have any doubts try it ! I am an avid film shooter and cannot stand the color rendition of actual sony cmos sensors anymore : the orange reds, the muddy magenta skintones, even the new leica cameras use the same sensor and the files look exactly the same as any Nikon or Sony camera. I purchased a Sigma Merill Dp3 and Sigma Quattro Q0 and the color richness and look under the right conditions (avoid contrasty scenes) is just amazing and pure joy to watch at. It brings back to word “graphy” into the meaning of “photograph” vs the common digital look of other digital cameras

    A fair taster review. Funny thing is most 'main-stream' reviewers of these Sigma cameras seem to like dwelling on what they are not good at - always looking for the holy grail. Anyway I'm quite happy to work within its strengths - as in the end I'm after the superior resolving and colour clarity it can offer. I use a Nikon DLSR for more every day material - or indeed an iPhone - whatever is more convenient at the time.

      I even do sports with my sd Quattro and it works perfect. The 120-300mm f/2.8 is a perfect match for the sd Quattro (and already worked perfect on the SD1)
      Its just that most poeple nowadays no longer can take photos, they need their camera to do the job for them, and those people fall on their nose as soon they try out the Sigma.
      But that does _not_ mean it can't be used for other things. I switched to Sigma completely in 2012 and since then, i was able to take photos of everything i wanted to.
      Landscapes, Nature/Animals, Architecture, Sports, Portraits, (Night) Street Photography.
      The Sigma can do everything, like analog cameras could do everything.
      Sigma even runs an Blog called "Sigbla" where they showcase everything but studio photos.

      That would mean, that nobody in former times has made a good foto outside, any sigma digital has more light capabilities outside than any analogue. So I agree, that nowadays quite a lot people are not recognizing a camera just as a tool but as a scientific bulk of data measurement, which they mean must give a good photo by religion.

    • @DmdMixZ

      @@Vamp898 Well, please define "works perfect" here?
      Ever tried shooting a Footballmatch in rainy conditions?
      How Noisy are the images?
      Now don't get me wrong, I know this camera can perform but compared to an A7RII for example it doesn't deliver enough for landscape and stars.
      Even the Sigma Reference Landscaper Fabio Antenore is not Shooting on Sigma but on Sony Platforms and only uses Sigma Lenses (which are outstanding by the way).
      I never said "You can't take a photo outside with that camera" but I'm not looking to take a huge ass heavy camera out to get some snapshots but to get some really
      crisp and well rounded images.
      On a sunny day? Alright, yes.
      Shooting a sunrise or sunset from a tripod? Sure, might work just fine.
      Getting super sharp milkyways at night? Not gonna happen below ISO 1600 even with an 14mm f/1.8 and since even an
      alpha6000 outperforms the sigma in noise performance I don't see ANY reason why someone would buy a Sigma at a $1000 pricetag for Landscaping.
      This thing has it's strength in MP per $ and that performance you need to really make it a "bargain" can only consistently be produced in a studio enviroment. Period.
      I don't know the "Sigbla" blog and couldn't find it. Only the usual Sigma Photo-Blog which is shot mostly on other brands and with sigma lenses.
      I'm open for you to change my mind but you'd have to pump out some really stunning images for that to happen :D

    • @Vamp898
      @Vamp898 5 лет назад +2

      @@DmdMixZ Well sure, if the only thing you do is shot sports in the rain and Milkyway (roughly 0,001% of photography), than the Quattro might not be the right camera for you.
      But you can still take the 99,998% of the other scenes and they then look way better with the Quattro.
      I rather have a camera that is better 99% of the time than a camera that is better 1% of the time.
      But if those 1% are the important for you, then you should not go with an A7R either, because than the A7s is the right choice for you.

      @@johnsmith1474 a CMOS only takes luminance data at full resolution, but color data at 0.25x the real resolution, but our eyes are bad at realizing this and the cameras have processing to fake it. But foveon sensor takes color data at full resolution. That's why the images taken on a foveon can be as good as a image taken with CMOS that has 4x the resolution. We're also not wasting photons with filters so low light photography should theoretically be great but I haven't actually seen any example of that.
