As an SDQH owner myself it's a real pleasure to encounter a sensible appraisal of the camera on You Tube - they're as uncommon as the camera itself. I was attracted by your 'digital roll of film' descriptor in the title - I've always regarded my SDQH as a 'digital transparency film' camera, so think you're on the money with your title.
The companion piece you have on workflow is a gem too, so thanks for that - very useful.
I hope you shoot yours as an IR camera; I've used mine as such often and it's unique in being able to switch back and forth in seconds while out in the field. I went out configured for IR today but the sun disappeared. Hot mirror popped back in, I was back shooting conventionally within moments. I love it and like you hope Sigma do a full frame jobbie.
Wish you and yours well going forwards - great channel!

I've been shooting with Sigma cameras for years, particularly the Merrill generation, which is arguably the best Sigma have ever produced. The DP2 Merrill in particular, has the most impressive tonality and color detail that I've ever seen from a camera, and I also use a Fuji GFX on the regular. The Foveon sensors are not the best for portraits or skin, however they are the closest I've seen that a digital sensor has come to replicating the look of film.

Could not agree with you more. I lucked into a DP2M and can't believe how awesome it is, particularly with its small form factor.

Great video! Since 2014 Sigma dp3m is my main camera! I use it for landscape, street and fine art photography! Critical noises in low light are solved by VPS mode! The camera has such high detail that it requires the very best landscape carbon tripods or wooden Berlebach level tripods! I also want to note that the highest color accuracy I had for a couple of years was limited to light filters of famous brands ... Now I see what it is capable of with Rodenstock! Happy shooting everyone! Sincerely, Foveonych from Saint Petersburg!

Great video! I was a Mamiya 7II person until I got my DP2M in 2014 for a few bucks... I was so amazed by it that I quickly got the DP1M and DP3M. Since then these three cameras are what I bring on my trips. Coming from film all the classic drawbacks are nothing... One thing not many people realize about sigma foveons, is that these cameras were designed to portray the beauty of Japanese still life under Japanese lighting... That is lots of rainy days and hazy sun, no harsh light conditions, lots of greens and strong reds... When using these cameras there you realize about all these things... I always shoot 100ISO sunlight WB, It's almost like shooting Velvia. I wish they did something smaller than the SDQ's... It's too big for me!
Keep up with the great job!

@@ratinthehat_ the three have the same sensor so the look is quite the same. The Dp2 Merrill field of view is the closest to the standard 80mm lens in the Mamiya 7 range. My advice is starting with the Dp2M is the most versatile.

I mainly use film and the thing that drew me to these cameras is the process. They are not the easiest cameras to use and they truly do make you slow down, kinda similar to film manual film cameras. The colours, man the colours! Cheers for reminding me what a truly marvellous camera these are.

I totally agree - I have a SD Quattro that I love, despite the lack of dynamic range (made better with SFD mode, though still subjects only). My investment in Sigma lenses maintains value with the Sigma fp with the MC-21 adapter - though those big lenses make the fp a big and heavy camera. Your SA-mount lenses WILL work (in DC-crop mode if they're DC lenses) with full automation with the MC-21. The fp is the opposite in having massive dynamic range, great video and small size. Both quirky, both great, both hard to recommend to others but easy to love.

After enjoying a dp0 Quattro for a while now (THAT lens!!!), and finally having figured out how to get consistently great results from my dp2 Merrill, I had the chance to shoot the same scene with a 5Ds R and L glass versus the dp2 Merrill. The dp2 Merrill blew the 5Ds R out of the water (Quite literally! The scene I photographed was an emerging Skunk Cabbage with a nice spotlight of natural light on it) - it was brutal realizing a 15MP camera blows a 50.6MP camera away in terms of sharpness, detail, color. The Merrill file showed a teeny, tiny spider hanging on a thread in between plant stems that was so small, I couldn't even see it with the naked eye. Both cameras rendered the spider, but the 5Ds R in spite of its higher pixel count does not resolve enough details on the animal to show it as what it is, on the Merrill file, the spider is recognizable as a spider.
I knew then that I need to invest into something like an sd Quattro or sd Quattro H. There are no good offers for a Quattro H at the moment but I grabbed a brand new in box, with Sigma warranty sd Quattro, including a brand new, in box, with Sigma warranty 30mm f1.4 Art, at the recommended retail price from years ago. Some things hold their value I guess - and I can see why! There is NOTHING like it. I will at some point soon get the two f1.8 Art zoom lenses.

SA Mount is their SLR mount for many years, is their standard mount since their film SLR era as I know, and for digital era, it's used since SD9 (which also their Foveon X3 sensor DSLR), and that's why it's still chunky as their SA Mount lens design with SLR style in mind, so the chunky munt is due the focal flange that needed, to allow the lens able to focus properly. I still search it in Indonesia secondhand, but in here, as I know, I only able to buy it new via Indent purchase through Sigma distributor, and they will imported to here directly from Japan.
also the 45MP resolution is actually an result of interpolation due unique demosaicing effect of Foveon X3 Quatrro, your sensor resolution is actually 25MP Blue+6MP Red & Green, this allowing your camera able to produce 45MP images in S-HI JPEG. But the main thing, all Foveon sensor is always sharper, and more detailed, as the sensor capture all color in single pixel location. If want to check the sensor true power, try check their Sigma SD1 & SD1 Merril images, which true native 15MPx3 Foveon X3, and able to capture really allot detail within that 15MP sensor.

I have the H and standard SD Quattro and ABSOLUTELY LOVE them... They are big, heavy, slow... but the IQ is stunning if you take your time. I use these to photograph my kids and some specialty engagement/bridal stuff when needed/requested.
I love the ergos, if you stay at 800iso or below you are golden. It really is like shooting film. I love the deep rich color, limited DR vs newer Sony/Fuji/Etc. ... I typically run mine at 400iso, aperture priority and generally with 30mm F1.4 or the 105mm F1.4... I easily say that of all the bodies and lense and combos therein, the SD has produced some of my most favorite images. They really are like shooting film, just that you can offload a DNG right to your phone, edit and send vs dev time and scanning, etc.

I recently received my 135mm 1.8 and 18-35mm 1.8 Sigma Art lenses and these are incredible on the Quattro H. The 135mm is unfortunately a bit slow to focus on the Quattro but when it nails the face or subject it looks like medium format.
I also have the 135mm Art Nikon (found them second hand) and it works amazingly with the Nikon Z8 and FTZ2 adapter, way faster than on the Quattro. Results are great too…perfect for weddings and portraits at 1/4 of the price than the new Nikon 135mm S

I'm all in on Sigma primes(which I love) and shoot with the SDQ H. I have a Sony body for adapting vintage and contemporary lenses so no tears there. My world view is dependent on the Sigma producing the FF Foveon which is thankfully back in development. Sigma will convert my SA mounts to L mounts and all will be right with the world. My business is dependent on a Hasselblad H4D-60 (CCD sensor) but nothing gives me as much joy as shooting with the Foveon. Thanks for your review!

What a wonderful video. Literally the SD Quattro H saved my Holiday 2019 when I visited the States for the First Time and my Nikon gave up in the Desert. The Quattro, intended as the Camera for the Special Shots, took on the Job as a Workhorse. From Flagstaff /Arizona to San Francisco.
Accordingly to the 18-35 it's a wonderful lens I bought for Nikon F Mount too and I won't miss it. A once in the lifetime lens.
But I also would highly recommend the 24-70 2.8 on the Quattro H it's I very universal Lens you can do nearly anything with it.
As you said.. California has a very harsh light, comparable like we have it in Europe. We figured that Arizona has wonderful light, very soft like a Giant Softbox. I can tell you from First Hand the Quattro loves Arizona 🙂

Came to it from the Canon ecosystem (film and digital). I have the Sd.Q.H. complete with the battery pack unit that adds ease of use and two more batteries to the one in body (and the superb flash). Built like a TANK. The ergonomics are SUPERB...if only the EVF could tilt up...😭 I use it only with full frame Sigma SA lenses, with selected M42 screw lenses (mainly Meyer/Pentagon 135/300/500mm monsters) and Tamron adaptall-2 lenses converted to M42 (80-200/2.8 LD, 200-500/5.6 LD, 180/2.5LD, 300/2.8 LD ,28-105/2.8 LD). I use a tripod in about 95% of my shots (on ISO 100-400 for color and 100-1600 in B&W) and I focus manually to get the ultimate sharpness. I treat it like a medium format camera. Always taking slow and secure steps...keeping an eye on the histogram, punching in for critical focus and always on 2sec shutter delay. The quality of the results blows me away time after time. In my photo club, people just recognize my photos by the sharpness, detail and color nuances, even when they are blowed up to 1.5X1.0 meters. 51 freaking megapixels in an APS-C sensor ( halfway between full frame and APS-C, 1.25X). And does a KILLER B&W and IR photography. This camera made me a FOVEON believer. Waiting eagerly for the full frame Sigma Foveon when it comes out.

I’ve been shooting with the SD Quattro for two years. It is quirky and I think it takes someone who has shot film to really love it. That said, and I know you don’t want to defile any of your Pentax lenses, I love finding cheap Pentax lenses and adapting them. A favorite is the Auto Chinon 50mm that I picked up for $10. It always hurts to know that the lens will never work on the Pentax again, but it’s fun to use with the camera. I also enjoy using older Sigma SA mount lenses, which you can usually pick up a lot cheaper than the newer Art lenses. A surprisingly crisp one was the 18-50 HSM OS DC. As you said, the auto focus system is not the best, and it’s even worse on some of the older lenses, so shooting manual focus is pretty much required. Glad I found your channel and glad to find some good new videos on the SD Quattro.
I saw someone else mentioned a Samsung NX1. I don’t have an NX1, but an NX3000. I have a Pentax adapter for it, so using the old Pentax lenses on that one are fun. The Pentax and Sigma are about a 1mm difference, so the Sigma lenses don’t work with the adapter.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but the reason for the thick adapter (losing my words here) on the SD Quattro is because it uses the old Sigma SA mount, which was developed for SLR. Thus it requires the same distance from lens to sensor that the DSLR has. I’m sure there are so many people on here that can explain that better than I can.

21:9(2.33), although close, is not the XPan ratio which is 65:24(2.70). 21:9 is not quite as wide. But, one could crop the 21:9 in post to exactly 65:24 and still have plenty of resolution for a print. The problem with printing this wide is that there is not a paper that ratio. So, your prints will have a lot of excess white paper, which you can trim, of course. I have this camera and love it. My favorite lens is the Sigma 24-105 Art.

Regarding adapting Pentax lenses to the SA mount, quick tip: there's little need to sacrifice/destroy OEM lenses, instead you can dig into the Tamron adaptall lense lineup. Get an adaptall to pk adapter, modify that (quite easy and even reversible) and you can use an entire lens lineup on the SA mount in full manual and with stopped down metering. There is very little play between the lens and the camera (I get as much play from using Samyang lenses on Eos mount natively).
Most adaptall lenses aren't insanely fast, but they are lovely things with beautiful warm colours.

@@OneMonthTwoCameras Generally good. Love the resolution and color tweaks, however I have to admit the native lens sizes get old when moving about. I'm often caught in the pull of shooting experience vs. file output with cameras. The GFX is definitely on the latter side. Honestly, sdQH for me too. Then I get lazy and start focusing on the shooting experience and that leads to m-mount lenses on various bodies, an old used SL most recently. I tried to combine shooting those lenses with the GFX in 35mm mode with some success, but it's an expensive camera to throw away that many pixels. Looking forward to the FF l-mount Foveon as the lens options will really expand, including those. I did buy the 24-70 f/2.8 sa-mount zoom recently due to the reinterest you sparked. Curious to experiment with soon. Great review BTW.

I have been sooo looking forward to this review! I always say I’m more interested in the intangibles than the all the scientific things that are easily quantified and qualified on a spec sheet and this camera is such a great example of that. I’ve been so blown away by all of your images from this camera in the past few weeks. Also, on a super random note - I actually got a Minolta 7000i a few weeks ago based on your suggestion! It came with a 35-105mm lens for $24. I had to get a new 2CR5 battery for it, but other than that, it works great! Anyway, amazing job as always!

Oh I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the 7000i! I'm eager to dive into mine since it has all these fun data cards which I actually bought and want to see what they can do. I think they're mostly gimmicky but still.... Mine was my father's camera so it's particularly special and has a fun story behind it. The fact these Minoltas - bodies and lenses - are still so under the radar is fantastic. You can get them for a song and they can be really good. Which 35-105 do you have? I first got the kit by accident and then found a beer can for cheap and adore it (allphotolenses.com/lenses/item/c_481.html#prettyPhoto). I have my auto iso set to max 400 at normal shutter speed. Works well for those moment you just want to get the shot in lower light. As for correct skin tones I select the correct WB and reduce the crisp setting in SPP to min to reduce the micro contrast and to further smooth the skin I select portrait. It's an interesting thing but I find I can then take the tiffs to Lightroom and just finish off any HSL type adjustments to get it closer to what I like. With the 18-35 I'm usually shooting between 1.8 and 8 to avoid any diffraction.

When I was younger I started out on film photography. Most of the images were okay. During that time when I first found out about digital photography I thought digital photography was terrible since the quality was not there in the late 1990’s. During the early 2000’s period when my family bought their first digital camera in the 2000’s I bought a slr film camera. Some of the pictures that I took were good, but most were okay. Later on I started to use a digital camera. I think that buying a Mac in the early 2000’s and finding out that digital photography is not as slow and the image quality improved. Most of the pictures that I have that my family took before I was born are are okay. If the film camera is really good it can take images but nowadays I can take images on a digital camera that are almost as good as a really good film camera but I can do so more consistently.

I love my SD Quattro H. I wish there was more support for editing, but as clunky and as basic as it can be Sigma Photo Pro it does an adequate job. I do love the infrared aspect, can be tricky editing but if I'm feeling stale for ideas off comes the filter for an experimental day. If I want outstanding blank and white often the infrared is the way to go. Skin tones can be a challenge if the light is tricky. Hence I tend to settle for custom white balance. And when it comes to editing I might zoom in to the white of the eye and click there for correcting any colour issues, seems to help. For a camera with a lack of features compared to most competitors, the different aspect ratios is a real winner. It intrigues me what a foveon full frame could do, but I wonder it it will ever happen. I love the film like / lack of digital feel to the files, but it seems to be a technology that has struggled with each improvement always being behind in features. It seems to be a technology that is very power hungry. It's never been a camera for everyone. I've noticed though that even non photographers recognise that is a different quality to the finished image which I found surprising, thinking it might just be me, or in my head.

Im a published photographer and shot with the SD Quattro and Quattro H since they were both released. Undoubtedly the SD Quattro was one of the most frustrating cameras I had ever shot with. The build quality of the cameras was very good, felt well built like their Art lenses. When paired with the 18-35mm Art lens and conditions were absolutely perfect, both cameras could produce stunning images! Other times conditions could be very similar and when viewing the images in photoshop or Lightroom and zoomed in on at 100%, the photos would all look like an oversharpened mess, this was due to the micro contrast in the Foveon sensor. It was extremely frustrating, I sell big gallery prints of my work and need consistent results. Sigma has also discontinued the H and I think the Quattro is next, also all the added accessories are discontinued as well.
I’ve since switched over to the Fuji GFX medium format system and just blown away at the amount of detail in my images..

It’s the same sensor that was used on the Pentax 645Z and on the Leica S2 mark II. On the other hand, the Pentax 645D and Leica S2 mark Had 44x33cm CCD sensors with very nice skin tone and overall color output. So I own 5 of these, have done since about 2018, 4 with their own dedicated prime lenses. [14, 24, 35, 50] the 5th shares a 70mm Macro & an 85mm. I also own 20 batteries.... they must be the most power hungry camera on the planet....but hey, nothings perfect ! [I do astro with the 14mm, and for this I've set up a buck {DC to DC device} that allows me to run the camera off an electric bike battery for days on end... !! :) Also good for time lapse ] In my humble opinion they are a thinking photographers camera, not a sophisticated point and shoot. [I own two of those, both Nikon's, a D6 and a Z9]. I tend to see a lot with the Sigma as I nearly always stop and assess a scene prior to shooting it, it makes photography a relaxing pass time for me. I never use auto on the SD H, it's manual all the way! I primarily shoot landscape, still life and wildflowers with them. I always shoot at 1/3 of a stop underexposed. I looked at your shots and I'd say don't be scared to push hard to the left on the histogram, I believe you'll be amazed at what you can recover ! [Yes :), I know YT is not the most flattering platform...]
The reason for the mount is it's a throwback from Sigma's film cameras. The SA mount goes way back when, and this allows them to be used on all the Sigma cameras. The older lenses don't resolve particularly well on the newer camera's, but if you're after a retro look, the older lenses deliver it and are very cheap nowadays. I have 7 old lenses in a drawer and I'm loathed to get rid of them...... you just never know !!! There was talk by Sigma of a SA to L mount adapter, but I don't know if it ever eventuated.
I don't tend to use super fine, I generally shoot in brackets of 3. I was an early adopter of Photmatix Pro [It hit the market in ~2003 / 4 from memory] and used it for HDR back before HDR was the cool thing on the block. Of course, now HDR is everywhere.
If you're able to afford it, look at investing in a set of professional ND filters, the Sigma sensor absolutely loves them. [I use NISI Pro 150 x 150mm and a truckload of step up rings, but there are others on the market, just make sure they are optical glass and not plastic]
My peers simply don't understand my irritating willingness to lug kilo's and kilo's of gear around with me, the're always harping on about how I could do it lighter and faster.... but they seem to like my pics....funny that eh???
ON1 2019 opens .XF3 files, however, later versions won't which is irritating as I'm heavily invested, time wise. Used it since 2016.
I enjoyed your delivery and I'll keep an eye on your channel.
    Enjoy.

All these lenses are great but the 50mm 1.4 art and 12-24mm are just unbelievable great ! I didn’t know it was compatible with the 18-35mm ? Did you try any other APSC lenses with it ?

@@OneMonthTwoCameras it’s a great lens too, the range is of course very useful, but the overall IQ is not on par with the 18-35mm 1.8 or prime lenses. The distortion on the 24-70mm is pretty well controlled but the bokeh isn’t as smooth as on the prime lenses and it needs to be stopped at F4 at least for better overall IQ. It’s very good for travel though. Another good option to consider for travel is the 24-105mm. It came for « free » with my second Quattro H body (purchased second hand as backup) and is a nice option to consider. Second hand prices are around 350-400$ for this lens. Did I forgot to mention : the 20mm and 24mm Art primes are stellar too ! Coming from the Bronica 6-7 Fuji G680 and Fuji 617 I aslo feel that the Quattro H is like a portable digital medium format system with infinite film ! ;)
Have a look at the second hand we stores like KEH and Adorama they sell like new lenses for bargain prices ! My favorite one would be the 50mm 1.4 ART (it’s better then the 35mm and becomes a 60mm on the Quattro H)

Thank you! I felt the video was too long as it was so I just tried to encourage people going to my DP2Q review for a bit more on the sensor but man, these cameras are a real treat.

I love my Foveon, I prefer the Merrills (I have a Sigma DP2 Merrill presently) myself, they just have a gritty look compared to the later sensors - even if I need to carry around 15 different batteries for a walk with it. Foveon images just look a bit different, in both color and black and white. The Merrills in particular just freak out if you go over ISO 100, lest you shoot only in black and white and manipulate the blue channel. It's a bit like shooting slide film in methodology.

The DP2M is a brilliant camera. I scored one from a guy who had no idea what he was selling so I suuuuuuper lucked out and just love how incredibly powerful it is and still relatively pocketable. Kind of insane really.

I own all three DP Merrill cameras, DP1/2/3M and I love them all, all produce exceptional photos, the DP2 is my favorite but for portrait I use the DP3M. I used to own a SD Quattro with the 50-100 f/1.8 but I sold that kit in favor of the must more expensive GFX 50S II. I found the SD Quattro kit extremely heavy, no doubt this camera is built like a tank, nothing comes close, and the colors are very film like, more than the Merrill which is punchier.

It's a beast indeed! I love it so much that I'm willing to bear the burden but wish they could put this sensor in a smaller less robust form factor. My DP series bridge the gap for now.

    • @karimnasser6886
      @karimnasser6886 2 года назад

@@OneMonthTwoCameras They do, the DP Quattro series have the same sensor, but alas not the APS-H version. I've seen output from both APS-C And APS-H and I don't see any difference from the tonality or film-like colors mood/colors. The APS-H simply allows larger prints without losing much resolution. I have printed 13x19 photos from the DPM cameras and the resolution and colors are simply stunning.

Sigma also makes a 18-50mm for APS-C. Any thoughts on that one vs the 18-35mm that you have? Thx for your channel; it has more on Sigmas than anything out there.
