I found that the best lighting to shoot with the latest Quattro foveon camera is either to shoot in neutral light (overcast weather) with similar contrast between the subject and the background or during near golden light times when the colors are very strong. I shot my kids portraits in south of France at 7pm on the beach, rusted ships just before the sunset and the shots look even better then 6x7 velvia slide film

I also own a 2Q which I'd say is a truly unique camera in many ways. Considering the fact that it came out to the market 8 years ago and has never been a well known camera, it's a pleasant surprise for me to see your video about this camera shot just a few months ago.

I have the quattro DP1, also with the LCD viewer hood. Got a great price for it here in Germany largely because no one buys it. It's quirky but if you spend some time with it, it just makes sense as a serious camera for the serious photographer. Here's the thing: I set my preferences for the three custom options and move between those: i) 21:9 monochrome; ii) 1:1 colour (thinking I would use this for Instagram): iii) x3i Format, i.e. the huge sized files I vaguely understood. The 21:9 was manual, the 1:1 was programme, the X3i format was aperature priority. The X3i is basicly a seven-frame HDR image and are huge (300mb+). I took the camera on its maiden trip to Iceland, where it generated stunning images, but preferred to live on a tripod with heavy ND filters shooting long time exposures. My other geatr is m4/3, so the larger sensor is neat. The native B&W is to die for, reminds me of Adox KB14 in Rodinal 1:100...smooth tones doesn't begin to describe it. I also used it for time-lapse work, running generally 100 images at 3 second intervals of the dynamic iceland clounds. That said: I wish I had the dp0 rather than the dp1, as I think this is a sensor/camera that lives well with wide wide angles for the drama, rather than the slight wide angle you had. The dp3 might be interesting for portraits (and it focusses closer). Love the camera, keeping it, but it takes skill to use well. Well done images your side! 🙂

@@OneMonthTwoCameras :-) The downside of using 21:9 format for time lapse was finding software that would process it. I couldn't, 16:9 is doable, but 21:9: you got black borders top and bottom...

Great video (once again and it’s so cool to see this channel grow). I loved the look of the Foveon sensor on an OG DP2 I had but I hated using it. If sigma brought out a compact foveon APSC camera with L Mount that would be awesome since Leica seem uninterested in a CL2.
For the record - I like the talking head haha. Shows your enthusiasm and engagement to the viewer. At the risk of sounding like an arse (if you want feedback) - I think it would be cool to talk about the specifics of some select photos. For example why you took it in a certain way, what you wanted to achieve and how the camera helped (or didn’t) in taking them. This would be a nice addition as well as the current “show reel” of several more samples on your two weeks using it. Hope that didn’t sound rude - it’s your channel and I still really enjoy what you do here. Take care

We have the same photo artistic appreciations it seems, glad to have found your channel ^__^ I get to discover new things too.
I get my best pictures with my Sigma DP Merrills (Over Canon, Fujifilm, Sony APS-C / FF), I've done street, landscapes, macro, and travel photography with them, and carry the DP2 with me most of the time). I don't like the Sigma foveon sensor for portraits (Canon 5D Classic I/II or a Fujifilm XT100 S/T outshines is better for people). I also have a external loupe evf like the one you have for the quatro (for super sunny days or high altitudes). Manual focusing is great on both systems (Merrill and Quattro). Autofocus same, faster on Quattro (not in dusk or indoors, but fine, set autofocus point to larger setting) ISO as low as I can get it to avoid color noise 100-160-200 max. ((better work at 100, and choose according time of day / light circumstances, with the quattros you can go up to 400 / maybe higher if black and white). The lenses on these systems are super sharp. Sharp wide open at F2.8 on the DP2 and better at F5.6, but even at F2.8 very sharp. I import in Photopro 6 on by one, export as TiFF 16 bit, and then process in Photoshop, saves a 8 bit TIFF or JPG. The Quattro's are a trade off compared to the Merrills, you loose some microconstrast resolution, some color depth, you get some speed, beter ISO and dynamic range in return (and battery life!). JPGS are MUCH better. And you have DNG support. The SD, I want one (they are discontinued) , but you need ART lenses to benefit from the sensor, which can make it a very expensive combo (for such a unique niche system). I also have the Sigma SD10, that's a different beast all together, Bought it for 90 euro (+ 2 kit lenses) but darn, yeah you do it for the sensor, but that camera is experimental , people complaining about the DP/SD/Quatro camera's shouldn't even bother to look at the SD9/10/14/15 :-) ... you can't push the shadows in any way, 20-30 shots per 4xAA battery load (takes 6 HOURS to charges), the lenses available poor, at least with the DP1/2/Merrill/Quattro you have beautiful matching sharp lenses, and on the SD you can buy beautiful ART glass etc,) Anyway I love 80% of the files I get with these Sigma cameras, very Nikon D810 D850 like files (but different, it takes some time to learn the strenghts and weaknesses of the sensor and how to edit the files best), unique (just need to be careful with blowing out magentas and yellows, and you need to watch out for shadow/color noise) but every camera is unique and has its quirks... ps Just bought an Olympus E300 with 2 entry kit lenses and a Canon Powershot Pro1 to play with some CCD magic ^^ (after watching your vid the other day) Thanks for your inspiration.

Great video. I've owned the DP2Q in the past but ended up choosing the older DP1/2/3 Merrill edition. The Quattros blow highlights really easily I found. But I really like their color rendition. I think the Merrills also have the most filmic look I've ever come across, like no other digital camera I've owned. But in scenes/subjects with bright light and colors the Quattro look is superb. Almost want to own both versions...

Great video, I feel your pain and love for this camera. Having purchased the the DP2Q late last year I'm now looking at the DP0 or DP1Q. If you don't like X3F editing in PhotoPro, Sigma did release a Photoshop plugin. It works well, but doesn't offer the 16bit TIFF HQ output PhotoPro offers.

But damn, the detail and color richness of the Sigma smack you upside the head, don't they? And duuuuude -- have you not tried SFD mode? I didn't understand it at first, I'll confess. If you have skipped it may I suggest trying it on your H. This is a mode for hero shots with challenging dynamics. You ain't seen nothin' yet in terms of processing times, but OMG when it hooks up! I have the DP0 quattro (with a 14mm, a.k.a. 21mm, lens). It still turns heads, especially when used with the viewfinder attachment. I also have the DP1 Merrill and the DP3 Merrill, and I think I like those older ones a little better. I practically only shoot b&w with those cameras, btw. And yes, Affinity Photo supports the X3F files, a (small) part of the reason, why I use this software (main part is that I don't want to pay yearly subscriptions).
For the past years I more or less completely switched to analog medium and large format photography, though. So my Sigma's now live more or less exclusively on the shelf.

Great video! I'm a proud owner of a DP1Q and SDQ and after many hours of frustrations I found the Auto white balance is not the greatest in certain situations. I use the white balance presets sun/cloud etc or custom white balance. I also use standard colour profile and always expose to the right using the histogram to protect the highlights as the metering can overexpose in high contrast situations. Doing this made the post processing much quicker and easier. I just fine tune exposure and I'm done! Hope this helps :)

I just couldn't seem to reproduce the same thing with the DNG in Lightroom - the colors and shadows would block up. I have heard a lot of people have no issue with it so maybe I just haven't spent enough time trying. But again I've really come around on SPP so it's not an issue but I do think about the day when they perhaps stop supporting the software development and then it is absolutely clutch to have the DNG option.

it’s sooo much faster to install the SPP plugin for photoshop, and almost instantly import to TIFF and then edit from there, in ACR or lightroom. It’s massively faster on the M1 specifically! The toil is indeed real but it cuts this down by like 80%

So interesting- I have tried the plug-in for photoshop but I didn’t find it dramatically faster and if you can believe it, I’ve kind of fallen in love with SPP these days so while it’s slow, it really doesn’t bother me anymore 😂

I'd say I'm an experienced photographer, even though I haven't been shooting for 40 years or so, but I know my way around.
I got an Sigma DP2 - the OG one, I loved the brutalist design, and rarely I had some good results, but albeit it was extremely frustrating working with it. Hard to nail focus, non existing battery life (be happy to get 30 shots out of one battery). Put it back on the shelf.
I also got a dp1 merill, who is - in terms of sharpness and detail - way better than my recently sold 5d mk3, but offers en equally frustrating experience.
To be honest, I never had a camera that frustrated me that much

Haha, yes the cameras are frustrating, but they also reward you with beautiful shots. You must take at least 5 batteries with you. I see a battery like a 24er film and only look at the pictures at home on the computer and not on the display on the go. Otherwise you need more batteries…
