- Hello and welcome to JAY STEPHAN.
How I see the US after living in Germany is that some Americans represent the USA in a very negative light to the rest of the world. Those are not the true Americans. Living abroad, and living in Europe made me realize how the arrogance of some Americans bothers me. Living in Germany has opened my mind. Spending time in Europe has made me realize that American mentality of the orthodox, conservative population is flawed. Living in the USA and Germany gives me both perspectives and I prefer the German and European way of living and way of thinking.
A big part of the American population is arrogant, demanding, and have this false idea that America is the most free and the most powerful nation in the world.
I personally do not believe in or care of either of the US political parties (democrats or republicans). America needs unity, and a good leader that has the best interest at heart for the country and the world, not their own political and monetary gains.
I love both Germany and the USA.

Someone who truly loves his home country is not the one who loves it blindly, but the one who sees what's wrong with it and knows to critique it in an effort to fix it.
Correct, but how to talk with people who see this differently, as Jay pointed out.
It's like saying "I know I'm right, that's sufficient". How should one react on this "if you don't like it, leave !" phrase ?
Indeed! Continuous improvement needs a retrospective view. What works, what doesn't work that well and how can that be fixed. Rinse, repeat.

Im learning German and leaving America in February.
When I was a young student, I took a trip of a lifetime to the United States. With a friend I flew to Los Angeles and within a month we were traveling across the United States. We drove about 10,000 kilometers across the country, and ended up in New York, before taking the trip home to Denmark, where I come from. It was a great trip and since then I have maintained an interest in the US and I watch American news almost every day. That trip really broadens my horizons. What I found strange was that when I passed through customs to enter the US, even though I had a return ticket, the customs officer actually suspected that I was an illegal immigrant. He thought I would leave my whole life in Denmark, my family, my home, just for the chance to stay in the US illegally! In fact, after returning home after my vacation, I was going home to start my four years of free university education.
Same here. I worked in the U.S for a while, and the people i knew looked at me as if i was mad when i said i would return to live in the Netherlands 😅.Nice people, Truly nice and generous people. But they really didn't know anything about the rest of the world.

Ex US Citizen here. I left after Trump and all the white supremacy stuff came out in the open. Literally the best decision for my mental health, my financial health, and my physical health. The world is so beautiful with beautiful people. The only thing I regret now is not moving away sooner. I feel like I lost my 20's slaving away to a fancy job, a fancy car, a fancy apartment...all for exchange with my wellbeing. Thank you for your content.

It is because the videos are very insightful and intelligent. Most people on RUclips prefer hate, insults and aggresion. This platform is not a platform for rational discussions. What is a pity, because we don't take the chance to discuss topics all over the world.
I have been all over Europe in the past. I remember a few times where the Europeans would patiently and kindly count the change in my hand, treating me like I was an innocent child this way, ( before the Euro) and they would display much consideration. I loved Europe, thought of moving there a few times, and I absolutely loved driving all over their. Always felt very safe. Not so much in the U.S.
Europe is a wonderful place, don't get me wrong, but Europeans can and are as arrogant, uneducated and unkind as Americans and any other large group of people in the world. Don't put it on some kind of pedestal. Every place needs recognition for its positives and critical thinking about its negatives. There are plenty of places in Europe where you'll be treated as almost a robber or a thief for asking someone on the streets the time.

@@huskytail As a European, I wholeheartedly agree. There are certainly areas where Europe excels more than the US, but don't think the grass is greener on the other side of the Atlantic is all I'll say.
Ok, I understand that Americans do not want to hear anything about their country that is not absolutely positive, but can anybody explain to me why many of them support a person that wants to "make America great again" which implies that it is NOT great. Why does nobody demand him to leave the country? I do not understand.

Have you seen some of the "Gen Z" videos that actually go around a lot ? That will maybe explain it to you, because it shows that a lot of them are simply too dumb to understand the meaning of basic words. Now this was 20 years ago, pre-internet. But i lived and worked in the U.S (Florida ) for a while. I met very nice people. They invited me in their homes, and showed me around.( I never experienced such a level of hospitality from strangers anywhere in Europe) But most of them had one thing in common. They assumed i must have felt so happy being able to live in the U.S . They just couldn't believe i went back to the Netherlands for another job .It was like : 'Oh dear, do you have problems with immigration ? 'or 'Such a shame you need to go back ! Do you need help with your greencard , etc ". . They somehow couldn't phantom why someone wanted to go back to Europe .😅
One of the children of a good friend lived and worked in the USA for a number of years.
Since everything revolves around work, he hardly had any real friends and at some point he was just annoyed and just wanted to go home.
@@manub.3847 That's true. I was lucky because i communicated with European countries, so i only worked mornings. But yes, it's hard to make real friends. Most people are working like crazy. I met some young people with well paid jobs, nice cars, , good salaries. But they couldn't really enjoy it because they worked like 50 hours a week, and then had to drive to and from work for another two hours. Every day , sometimes in the weekend. . That's no life.

You'll be treated with great hospitality on the Balkans and in Central and Eastern Europe. I don't know much about Spain and Portugal to say, but what used to be called Eastern Europe is very, very hospitable. Though I still would want back to Europe, even in Western Europe where I live, so Americans won't understand me either 😂
@@huskytail That depends .Every Eastern European or Balkan country is different. Also, I'm not saying people are not hospital in Eastern Europe. It's just that (in my experience ) Americans tend to invite neighbors and colleagues without knowing them far easier .But it also depends where. NY city is different then a small town. Belgrado is also different then a small town,

I've learned so much about America and my home country Germany over the last few months. I get goosebumps when I hear people like you how happy they are in Germany. And that shows me that we must have done some things right in Germany and that makes me happy really proud Thank you for that and warm regards from Munich.
You learn a lot about yourself, your home country, and the perspective of foreigners regarding you and your country when you live and work abroad for a while. I noticed some stereotypes about Germans fit me, and some do not. In general, I see citizens of the EU sharing much more common values than with British or U.S. Americans. We value social security and a peaceful society over some "freedoms" like the right to wear guns or having the "freedom" to insult other people without repercussions. Now, I would never consider moving to the USA, there are so many countries in Europe and in the rest of the world where you can have a better life. The USA is just a place where you have the opportunity to become insanely rich if you are reckless enough.
My mom is from Germany and I'm from the USA. I have seen so many Germans roaming around the USA in extreme poverty for no reason. The nightmare I lived in the USA because of my Auslander mother is intense. You people need to stop learning English and stop the USA obsession. Go ask the Turks what they think about Germany... you don't need the opinions of the USA. Focus on everyone else in Germany.
My son is biracial, half white, half Asian, but he mostly looks Asian. His father would wake me up crying when I was pregnant with him, telling me that he worried about how people would treat our child because he did not believe I understood because I am white. I raised my son as a single mother, so my son would tell me about times when he was out in public and people displayed their racists views openly by insulting him. This mainly occurred in Texas and of all places, France. It hurt me deeply to hear him tell me the horrible things people said to him, while he was out and about, minding his own business.
I have spent a lot of time in Germany, back when the Berlin wall first fell. I found the Germans to be very kind. They went out of their way to invite me out and spent time getting to know me in social situations. Only once did I experience the opposite. I was alone in a restaurant, the waitress refused to wait on me. One of the customers asked her in German why was she avoiding me? She yelled about it and I think I just ended up quietly leaving. It was so weird to be ignored and refused service. I have a lot of empathy for people who are treated like that on a daily basis.
I know what you mean, been here since 1976 as a GI and since 1984 on my own two feet. Just hit retirement in Germany this month after 45 years of working.

I agree that the States have superior military power, due to the obscene amount of public taxes spent on it...but i take issue on them being the best at higher education, I'm sure you've heard of Oxford and Cambridge amongst others, in the UK. 😉..I.do love this video though...it is a national pastime for us British to moan about our country, we complain about the healthcare, but there would be a riot if it were ever taken away, we moan about the weather, too hot, too cold, we complain about our politicians and yet still vote idiots into Parliament..however, we absolutely LOVE our country and are very proud to be Brits..there is nothing wrong in seeing wrong, it's frightening to me when ultra patriot Americans think their homeland is perfect and won't accept criticism, it seems like brainwashing and even the swearing allegiance to the flag is very cult like behaviour, especially as it is started in schools. Real freedom is feeling confident enough to say what you like about your country without fear of retribution, on the contrary, over here that is just classed as small talk...lol.
I highly appreciate your reflected view! You developed your view after being born and raised in the US (in a bubble as you say) and this is so essential! There rarely is only one view or one truth, you need to look at things from different angles. If you don't move (or don't really listen), this is hard to achieve.

Unfortunately this requires 'knowing better'. Again, unfortunately a vast number (dare I say, a majority?!?) of Americans simply DON'T know.
Not as in 'don't know BETTER' but simply 'don't know (at all)'.
So they are unable to 'know better' if they don't even 'know' at all.
Which is why I am so happy that many sane people on social media are attempting to open the eyes of the people around the world, including Americans.
This has a much greater influence than many people believe. Because once you truly open your eyes and see, thinking about what you saw, and accepting that there actually may be better alternatives than what you have constantly been taught in your life, then you can't go back to being ignorant anymore. Or at least, it takes quite some time to fall into that trap again.
Once you start asking yourself critical questions, not necessarily negative questions, but critical questions, that place a shadow of a doubt on firmly held beliefs without any factual background to support those beliefs, THAT is the first step in truly becoming a non-ignorant person.
Thank you, Jay, for your constant insights, and your attempts to improve your own country by being such a non-ignorant person and spreading the idea of "When you know better, do better."

First off all you are in another Culture secound German waiters usually get better wages so they don´t to have to kiss everybody ass for a greater Tip.
Because thats what they do they don´t do this out of Fun or because they like you they do this to eran a fucking living.

I have been stationed in Europe for five years now and I love it. I don't want to come back to the states. I love the slower pace of life and how much safer it is here. I was the overly proud American for all of my young adult life. I do love my country, but I tell my family and friends that I plan on trying to stay here permanently some day.
After 5 years you should be able to apply for a German passport.
Not sure if the same applies while working for a foreign military.

Agree with you. Lived abroad and moved back because of family reasons. If not for my aging mom I would leave again for good. Germany is a nice country. I toured all over it a few times.

I have / had some wonderful American friends (some of whom unfortunately meanwhile died of disease or age) and their opinions pretty much resembled yours. Please keep informing your compatriots if you can.
When I visit the US I am totally shocked how separated the people exist. I love to go to the Gonzales Northgate Markets, but I am literally the only gringo inside. Same with the Chinese farmer markets. It is a country of many different people, but everything is so separated.
The situation in London was what we in germany call „Fremdschämen“. You are feeling to belong to a group or someone who has a bad behavior. (Sorry for my bad english)
Haha yes three times helpful Americans tried to broker a marriage, so I can stay in the country. And they were absolutely baffled when I told them I have a green card, I'm good, I don't want to become an American citizen.

As an expat, who will soon be returning to the expat life… very well said, elegantly too. It’s disheartening to watch this country (United States) de-evolve. It goes without saying that no place is perfect. However, sometimes you just get to a point in your life after trying so hard to educate, communicate, live healthy, and tolerate that you realize “you can’t fix stupid”, you want to have a fuller life without all the drama where those are actual community values.
Crazy how fast Europe has fallen.
To me, the main problem is the system, where children are indoctrinated to be patriots in kindergarten and schools. All countries who do that suffer from xenophobia and have tendencies of megalomania - and (interestingly) have a subgroup in their country, which is regarded to be the "better" people (Whites in the US, Russians in the Russian Federation, Han-Chinese in China, Hindu in India, etc.).

Parts of our family was professionally involved with companies in the US in the 90s and 2000s and yes, there is a clear difference between e.g. Los Angeles, Dallas or just the Bible Belt mentioned. At the latest when there were professional contacts with companies, especially in South Carolina, we had our email distribution lists removed after bad experiences. There, "jokes" were simply shared, which were the deepest, despicable and, above all, stupid and clumsy pure racism that we have not known in this form in Germany for at least 70 years. The transactions were between German authorities and high-ranking high-tech companies. So the contacts weren't with any little rat shop. That was the scary thing about this. Viewed from the outside, this does not appear to have changed significantly. We have not experienced anything like this in the company contacts in Los Angeles and even in Dallas.
What totally surprises me is the hate Americans feel from their own countrymen when, as an American living abroad, you express an opinion that isn't overwhelmingly pro-US.🙄

Saying that you can drive to Italy and go through Austria or the American who said that they can get cheap flights to other countries in Europe, these are not good arguments to make. Europe is a small continent with many countries and languages/cultures which allows for more international travel and connections especially for those who have money. The USA is so much larger than European countries and is harder / more expensive to travel internationally.
A PATRIOT is someone, who's proud of their country. A patriot THINKS it's the best place in the world, but they are alway open to improvement!
They show off their best feautures to foreigners, and they behave their best towards strangers, as if to proove themselves right 😉
A NATIONALIST is someone, who's proud of their country. A nationalist KNOWS it's the best place in the world, so any slight critisism is received as an attack.
They don't hesitate to show of their worst features, as they give a toss about what others think, and they feel entitled to treat foreigners as "lesser beings".

Sorry. Scares me the most is the deep fundamental obsession with religion. If I would visit Iran I would be less scared if declaring I'm christian then appearing in the bible belt and introduce myself as an atheist. I got the feeling that faith over there is deeply digged into politics and education and puts peer pressure on everyone else. Scary
I try to ignore such people! Mostly of them are frustrated about there live and they don't know what they can do against it!
Ahh i mean, i remember in my youth, when the Wall was still there in Germany, some older people also told us, when we were demonstrating against stuff, like the deployment o american pershing rockets .. "Hey if you don't like it here, you can go to the other side of the wall" (Wenn es dir hier nicht gefällt kannste ja nach "Drüben" gehen)
But else, you can complain about mostly everything and find people who agree because we germans like to complain. A big part of the fun of watching these "american expat videos" is for sure also that there are a lot of things we don't like here, but they show us that it could be waaaay worse and so we can maybe enjoy a bit more what we have here. But of course we will still not stop complaining, since you should never accept a "lesser evil" as good enough.
Not american, not European, but I think USA is way better than Europe as a whole.
Stronger Economy, less racism, better opportunities. European culture is too rigid and climbing the socio-economic ladder is very hard compared to USA. Racism is very overt in Europe if you follow all the news on Sports like Football, and also some of the European attitudes here in North America.
Also Energy crisis in Europe is currently a problem.
You can’t just treat Europe like one country, these things depend on which European country you’re in.
I agree with the “better opportunities” part. But the food in America tastes like cancer, makes you sick, and then you get charged a ridiculously large amount to cure it. For that reason alone I prefer the EU, because the food tastes healthy and clean and there’s also universal healthcare.

The term "rich" doesn't imply duration at all. But here's one for you on something that really matters - the US is the oldest extant and continuous representative democracy in the world.
I think what Dennis meant by "American money" was the stereotype that jobs are all low paying in Europe by comparison. The Second Amendment grants the right to arms in the interest of forming a well-regulated militia -- sort of like the police, but more regulated. So I don't think 2A is at fault, but that conservatives can't read.

Jay, Jay, Jay.....Yes, I agree with you, there are Americans like you have described . People who behave like that are embarrassing and deserve the unfortunate labels. There are are those of us who do not behave like that and are still on the receiving end of those stereotypes. I have found that Germans, some but not all,, DO stereotype Americans (meaning people born and raised in the U.S.). I, personally, have been on receiving end of derision, at the gate, because of presumptions. My observation of you is that you really do prefer Germany, and perhaps you have a tinge of embarrassment over being from the U,S. Please don't make it hard on those of who want to travel to Germany (or other countries) and not be stereotyped. I don't want to smack talk about my birth country in order to fit in. I totally agree with you. Although I am not from the US, I live in Europe and see this happening everyday. I understand and actually this is a common communication from people immigrating in Europe. I really find it hilarious when Americans come to Europe and speak about how expensive the US is and how low their salaries were. Almost everything is said in bad light which clearly shows it is UNTRUE.
American does not mean "people born in raised in the US". America is a continent, actually 2 continents, consisting of a multitude of nationalities, which you categorically deny by claiming the term 'american' for a single nation. Mexicans, Canadians, Brazilians, Chileans, Cubans, etc. are not american to most "Americans".

Hello Jay I greet you. You really say it to the point. America is scenic really a very beautiful country which is really worth it as a tourist to travel. but, now it comes, outwardly top except for a few smears, inwardly totally insufficient. My second point, military strength is not everything, that the US want to be strong is understandable, but not at the expense of the people who live there. All taxes go into the military budget, companies pay only small taxes compared to the insane profit that they make. The main burden is the normal citizen who has to work hard and has nothing left, that is not peace, not an "American dream" that is at most a nightmare. It is like a cogwheel which engages in the other, only this cogwheel, which is missing abundant prongs. The health system which is none, but only serves to exploit the people, help that should be in the first place, missing. This results in horrendous costs for hospital, doctor, Medizien etc. a declaration of bankruptcy for the system and the people, The police, very poorly trained does what it wants and bends the laws according to their rules. Yes, these weapons, the sorry subject of the U.S., many children and innocent people could still live if there were not these weapons, or as in Europe so strongly restricted and regulated that just not everyone can get these weapons, but this is again a huge business for the U.S.. Human lives do not count there. for this one makes just again huge profit with the criminals who then sit in prison. I think you could write a whole novel here to explain everything.

5:11 I was very puzzled by your list of strongest currencies. You open a list on Google of the highest currencies. First of all, high is not necessarily strong. But the link "Top 10 strongest currencies" below your link ("Top 10 highest currencies") is exactly the same list. Diving into it reveals that simply the relative value of 1 currency unit is compared. That explains why the top 10 list is so weird. Nobody believes the British Pound is stronger than the US Dollar, Euro, or Swiss Franc -- given how Brexit has weakened the British Pound.
To prove my point: If tomorrow the US government decides to replace the USD with a new dollar, at an exchange rate of 1 New USD = 100 (old) USD, then suddenly the new currency is mighty high at the top of the list. While in fact, nothing has changed regarding the strength of the currency. Only the decimal point has moved two places. Many countries that suffer from hyper inflation do this to make their currency "look better".
A currency is stronger, if it better holds its value over time. Hence, the US dollar is stronger than the British Pound. Hands down.

The U.S. has the highest nationalism percentage in the world, only one exceeding 50%...Russia is in the 40s and Australia is in the 30s and declining. Most countries are in the teens or 20s, including the middle east and india. Of course these are democratic/semidemocratic nations that have most of those percentages.

I would argue the U.S. is around number 8, with china, japan, south korea, finland, and Germany all being a little more advanced. China primarily in industrial engineering, finland in eco friendly engineering, south korea in computer engineering and biochemistry, Vietnam in robotics and AI, Japan in mechanical engineering. There definitely are many who are completely ignorant or too arrogant to learn the bitter truths of their own nation or country,
you will find them around Europe as well, as no place is perfect, if you think so, you will never improve the wrongs.
I honestly think the whole white privilege is just going to do more harm than good,
everyone is privileged in their own way and forcing that idea on someone because of the colour of their skin is just wrong to me personally.
It's got to a point where people can't speak their mind because they are too privileged to be allowed to speak on the matter, regardless of their upbringing, because of their skin colour.
That doesn't mean I disregard that it exists, but I highly doubt the majority are, whom are bundled with the rest, there are racists in all groups of people, let's not single that out.
I've been personally affected by this when speaking on issues, I am not U.S citizen, I respect those who can show respect to me, regardless of your origin.

Nah its def true. I am from the USA but my mom is from Germany and my cousins and most of my family are not even high school graduates in Germany. My own mother didn't finish high school.

This video reminded of some comments I read on other videos from americans being proud of america as an absolute concept. As Italian (or maybe also because of how I am as a person) already find the simple concept of being proud of a specific country weird. Like I feel lucky to be born in italy because is a wealthy country and it's relatively a good place to live. But to be proud it doesn't make sense. Like I can be proud of myself if I do good. I can be proud of my family and my friends if they do good and I have something to do with it. But being proud of a country? Or even of some random italian that I don't know? Does it even make sense?
As I said, I consider myself extremely lucky to be born in Italy and in a family where we never struggled for money and we love and respect each other. I'm glad when my country does stuff well and I'm extremely pissed when it fucks things up. I feel being proud of your country "no matter what" as an act of faith is just a kick in the nuts to critical thinking and can be extremely dangerous.
