Just rewatched it after 45 years that it first aired. Loved the series then with the general theme that no one--no one--in the town was safe. It does take some liberties with the book, but all dramatized novels fall short in that regard. The most bothersome thing was how they blatantly used a map of New Orleans as the real estate map for Salem's Lot behind Larry Crockett's desk. Apart from New Orleans being one of the most recognized cities in world based on its shape, the idea that a small down would be represented by such a large city was pretty dumb.
@@DaveReadsKing No biggie. They probably knew that no one would recognize even if they put a map of Moscow up there. Maybe they thought that New Orleans had a certain "mojo" given the story's theme. After all, we don't bury our dead; we keep 'em in crypts above the ground. Vampires LOVE us! 🥰 Plus it's easier for us to get dead folks to the polls on election days!
@@DaveReadsKing No biggie. They probably know they could have put a map of Moscow on the wall and hardly anyone would know. Also, New Orleans has a certain mojo they may feel worked with the movie theme. After all, we don't bury our dead; we put 'em in crypts. Keeps 'em above the water table and makes it easier for us to get 'em to the polls on election day. 😆

I think both the novel and 1979 miniseries are both enjoyable experiences. I really wish we could see the smooth talker side,of kurt Barlow in the 79 miniseries. However, I havent seen the 2004 remake of salems lot; I can confidently say that both the miniseries and novel were really enjoyable and spine chilling experiences for me. 😊❤📚
For me, Salems Lot is a must read and a must watch. A brilliantly judged version, the cronky vampire works, James Mason is a master stroke, and the only thing that steals the lime light from Geoffrey Lewis is THAT scene which in vampire film lore has NEVER been bettered. To quote a line I never expected to hear in this....SALEMS LOT....THAT'LL DO PIG...THAT'LL DO!
So it's a mini series in two parts like the original IT? I'm glad I know that now because when I originally saw the 3 hour running time on RUclips I was like nope! I thought it was a 3 hour movie!
Yep, there’s definitely a bit in the middle where you can stop and, I don’t know, go to bed or whatever then come back for part 2! Or, at least, it is on the DVD
I am happy you are out there, my friend. When I was reading the book, I thought that Straker and Barlow were swapped around for the film. I felt like Barlow was the one wearing the suit and Straker was the mysterious one. Still a great adaptation though of my favourite SK book.
Thanks Dave, I think I'm probably going to get as much if not more from this series as I did your book series! I'll be following closely, I've often thought about diving into the adaptations but never really knew where to start or where to find a lot of them. Would you perhaps be able to hint for each one on where best to watch? DVD or YT or streaming platform?
Great idea! I’ll add that in from the next batch I record…I think I overlooked it as I had them all on DVD then digitised them. For Salem’s Lot in particular, the DVD is still dirt cheap on music magpie, or you can rent it on RUclips I think
@@DaveReadsKing Thanks so much, really helpful! It'll also probably save us viewers potentially spending a shit load of money on a potentially shit adaptation too! You can take that one for the team Dave hahahah 🙈
Just finished reading Salem's Lot this Friday ! And watched the series afterwards. So much fun. We really liked it ! Do you know why they changed Burkes name in the series ? Or did i miss something ?!!
I think TV series often change characters’ names or even merge and delete them all together without any real reason. I imagine Tobe Hooper just didn’t like the name Burke 🤷🏻♂️ seems odd though
If you enjoyed "Salem's Lot" and you're also a fan of animation, you might want to check out the 22 episode anime "Shiki" from 2010. It's a similar premise to Salem's Lot, but the setting is an isolated town in Japan.
I have enjoyed this series as it is going. I would throw one thing in, if you could possible say where the movie/series/mini series is possibly streaming that would be great
Even though I like this miniseries, I still feel a remake could do better. I don’t think the upcoming version will be good due to the runtime of the movie.
The fact that they went from David Soul who was in my opinion, the perfect choice for Ben, to *checks notes*...Rob Lowe, is baffling to me. You couldn't've picked two more different actors.
Interesting! I actually prefer Rob Lowe - to me David Soul just doesn’t look like a writer. I’m guessing the team behind the 2004 version deliberately wanted to make their look very different from the 1979 one, given how iconic the original is.
Every time I read the book, I always visualised Ben as someone who had: black hair with a long as fuck fringe that's always leaning to the left, thin glasses, and an almost anorexic physique I remember seeing a picture of David Soul and I was fully convinced it was a different character 😂 not to knock his performance though. I really think he fits the character
have you heard, lance kerwin died this month, he played Mark Petrie
I did indeed - I reference it in the description of this video in fact. Very sad
I SAW SAIEMS LOT I ALSO READ THE BOOK BOTH WERE REALLY ENJOYABLE AND VERY 😨 SCARY!!
REST IN PEACE 🙏 LANCE.HE WAS GREAT AS MARK PETRIE.
Love that scene with the kid vampire floating and tapping at the window. So scary.
Heck yes!

Well, I can’t say I recognised it as New Orleans! I guess they just had to make do with what they had access to in those days

I have very little faith in this new one given how it keeps getting punted back and we’ve had next to no information on it. Shame.
