    I'm so glad you make long-term reviews! I hate it when reviewers put out a video after using it for a day and then just jump to a conclusion because there are so many things that either end up not mattering at all or that end up mattering a lot more than you thought.

      @@smariko3 My old XPS 15 9550 (The very first infinity edge XPS from like 5 years ago) had a lot of the same problems you were having, especially the overheating in sleep problem. They replaced the motherboard 3 times, over the span of 4 months. The last replacement worked, with the motherboard looked completely different from the first one (component placements are not the same). I never had a single problem with the laptop after that.
      I'm surprised that Dell is having this problem again.
      I ordered 2 XPS 9500 from Costco in early August and returned them both. They are still having the wobbling trackpad that Dell claimed to have resolved. They also have the the bluetooth/WiFi not working from sleep problem. It seems to be a dell software (SupportAssist) doing its "tuning" of network configurations and breaking it. Remove SupportAssist, reinstall the network driver should solve your bluetooth problem (it did for me). Use Dell Update as an alternative instead, it only downloads updates without doing all those "tuning".
      They have a great hardware engineering team who built this product, but the rest of the production just doesn't seem to be very good (software, quality control etc. )

    I purchased the 9300 after watching SO many people praise the hell out of it. I knew of a few issues, but I thought they were minor and few and far between. Well I had the laptop for about 25 days with my only complaint being the slow bootup time (slower than my 2015 HP Omen) and some minor screen flickering here and there. On the 25th day I tried to update the drivers through Dell update and it gave me a blue screen of death. When I tried to fix the issue the computer went into an auto repair loop and nothing I could do would fix it other than reinstalling Windows. After I finally got it reinstalled I had to manually update the drivers one by one so the computer didn't crash again. Luckily I was within the 30 day return period so I just gave up and sent it back. Mine was the base model that was around $1150 when I got it, so not super expensive, but if I am paying over $1000 I expect it to work flawlessly for at least 2 to 3 years. The XPS is definitely not worth it. I tried a Lenovo Yoga c940 for a few weeks with zero issues, it made the XPS look like a joke. Guess I have to go back to a MacBook Pro.

    Hey, I just wanted to say, I agree with most of the accusations said in this video. But, I have the 9560 and I had the same problem with the overheating in sleep mode. I fixed that in the settings. You have to choose hibernate instead of sleep when lid closed. All your apps will still be there eventhough it is like turning off the pc. And the Bluetooth problem will be solved through that too.

    I found a solution for the sleep problem you mentioned.
    For Windows, there is a setting to keep the screen on and the computer awake even when the lid is closed.
    This can be changed through the Control Panel -> Power Settings, and either changing the entire power plan to Balanced, or editing the power plan to change the setting for when the lid is closed.

    • @azharfahry_
      @azharfahry_ 3 года назад +1

      I was wondering about that too. Probably his laptop has the Lid settings to "do nothing" which make the laptop still turns out everytime the lid is closed. I've faced that problem with my 2016 HP EliteBook Folio G1 where everytime I pulled it out from my backpack, the back is just very hot. Turns out that its just a simple fix, I forgot to change the settings to Sleep.

    • @gabrielchan3298

      I don’t think this is the solution from my experience, it is about the fan. If you leave your XPS idle for a few hours after it is fully charged, then put it into the bag, there is no issue. If you straightly put the xps into your bag when it is “warm” or not completely cold, the fan just start rolling and it drains all the battery. It happens all the time.

I very nearly bought one of these this morning, but luckily I saw some reviews on here and others echoing your sentiments, as well as some discussing the black flickering issue that this model is experiencing. My problem is that I want something smaller and lighter than a 15" laptop, but something which has great specs, enough to be able to cope with video editing (probably not 4K). Can you recommend anything at all? The market seems... empty? I was looking at the Lenovo X1 Carbon but it's always described as a 'business' laptop. I need something with multimedia in mind, and it needs to run Windows. Can you suggest anything? Thanks.

Video editing in a small chassis is what I'm after. The search continues. Great review!
    I have purchased several Dells over the years. You and @Arfian Agus remind me of the design and hardware troubles I had with the original XPS 1330 in 2007. 4 Motherboards that overheated due to cooling issues. The last time it died I was out of town at a client site. Dell was apologetic and made it right by replacing it with a very nice XPS Studio 16 I still use today, but I wanted the lighter weight due to all the business travel. I had to reinstall the OS for both laptops several times and attributed that to buggy windows software.
    Smarikoe, you reminded me about all the time I spent and what it cost me. I'm thinking I might need to finally move to an Apple. I was going to buy a really sweet deal on the XPS 9300 at Costco, $1,700 with 32 MB memory and 1 Gig SSD. I'm thinking of foregoing the Dell and look at Apple now. I need something to work out of the box. I should not have to be an expert on an OS because its buggy.
    Good luck to all in their search.

    Thanks for sharing your full user experience vs someone who gets things to test for free and only spends less than a week with a product before publishing a review as is the norm with the popular reviewers here. And I couldn’t agree more about Dell support. It’s almost as if their support people are paid a bonus for each customer they get to just give up. It’s a HUGE ask to be told you have to re-install Windows and start over from scratch. And even if you do that, they still try to blame problems on your applications, external devices, etc. This is especially true of their free 1 year support but is even often true of their paid support plans. There’s a website with the title of something like “why I hate Dell” and it’s mostly about support nightmares.
    I do wonder if the developer edition of the XPS 13, now running Ubuntu 20.04 Linux, might actually be more stable than the Windows version. The laptop frying itself and killing the battery in your backpack is likely due to Windows 10 trying to wake up and phone home like it loves to do. The driver issues after sleep might also be related to Windows 10 nonsense. Linux doesn’t do that. You put Linux to sleep and it stays asleep. Apple also has a theoretical advantage here as they make both their laptops and the operating system. So Apple can’t blame Microsoft like Dell does. I’m not suggesting someone who needs Windows consider Linux or MacOS, but in my experience Windows 10 is often the source of most problems not the hardware.

      The overheating issue is - unfortunately - not so much a Dell issue. It is due to Windows "modern/connected standby" S1+ mode. Microsoft and Intel are pushing that feature hard but it is unfortunately not reliable at all. I have the same issue on my HP Spectre, you can find many reports for the HP Envy, Dell and Lenovo Laptops. There are also a couple of articles about that from large tech media channels. Microsoft wants to mimic the behavior of Apple but unfortunately created a very unreliable system which results in critical overheating.
      The only workaround - so far - seems to be to switch back to S3 sleep mode (in BIOS) which is the "old" sleep mode. Waking up takes longer but it is a "proper" sleep mode that nearly all hardware components support as it is around for a long time. HP does not allow to switch back to S3 in BIOS (HP consumer BIOS do only have extremely basic settings). Dell might, as their BIOS offer a lot more options than the competitors.
      Same goes unfortunately for the Bluetooth issue. Exactly the same on my HP Spectre and my work X1 (though Lenovo seems to have the biggest BT issues). It also seems to be connected to the "modern standby" topic.

    • @soupesoupe
      @soupesoupe 3 года назад

      @@marcusst8809 That makes a lot of sense.
      The overheating only stopped when I started turning off my wifi and bt or putting airplane mode on before closing the lid. It's an unfortunate issue but the rest of the laptop is perfect to me.
      Gonna try setting it up with the old sleep mode in the BIOS like you suggested.

      @@marcusst8809 I had the same issue with my XPS13 2in1 and I was also able to track it down to this. My device recorded a bluescreen every time it happened. Unfortunately Dell also removed the option to force S3 sleep from their bios. I also tried forcing S3 sleep in windows settings which turned out not to work. In the end I managed to get a full refund even though I bought the laptop almost a year ago. It was so bad that there was a 60% chance of the device fully crashing every time I closed the lid. This pretty much made that thing completely useless. An ultra portable notebook that bluescreens and overheats (not to mention the batery drain) is not really portable

    • @marcusst8809
      @marcusst8809 3 года назад +1

      @@darkfire2703 it is very unfortunate to hear that Dell also removed the S3 option. I thought they might still support it due to their Linux support (which does not really support S1+).
      I fully understand the return/refund...but...what are your options now? It currently looks like all major top-spec laptops only support S1+ and not S3 anymore. And the issue persists on all brands. I personally think that it is not easy to fix and often BIOS/Windows/Hardware related which might not be "fixable" without a hardware exchange.
      What mostly fixes it for me on the HP spectre is to unplug the laptop and then close the lid to put it into sleep mode. But if I put the laptop away in a sleeve or backpack, I always put it into hibernate. That works reliably for me.

  • @eyeofthetiger7
    @eyeofthetiger7 3 года назад +1

    Have you tried removing bloatware and unnecessary start up programs? Also, go into windows privacy settings and turn off allowing background processing for apps that shouldn't need it, which is most. Also, turn off windows full diagnostics and change to basic.
    Most OEMs have this problem. They jam pack the device with bloatware. The first thing I always do when getting a new laptop is remove bloatware and optimize the device.

I used to be a loyal PC Windows based user for many years, I learned my lessons the hard way after losing valuable photos, documents and work projects because of system failures or some hardware failures (mostly due to heat problems). Windows Operating systems have always been unreliable for me. I learned to never save my work onto my computers or mobile devices. I store all my work on a portable SSD drive with encryption. Because of my modern day paranoias, I chose to never keep or use cloud based storage, and NO I don't wrap my head with foil paper or a helmet like magneto. I learned one thing over the years. Always backup, backup, and backup your data. I found that switching from PC to Mac was the best decision iv'e ever made. I still keep a Dell Latitude that's a 2 in 1 convertible for some of my rare PC needs. I found Apple products to be far more reliable than PC based machines. Just my thoughts

    I bought the dell xps 17 about 3 months ago and so far it has been great. I absolutely love this beast of a machine and have no complaints about it. I am shocked that you purchased the xps 13 for the price you did because I bought my xps 17 cheaper than yours. It is the i7 model with 16gb of ram and 512gb of storage as well as the rtx 2060. It also has a 4k touch display. I managed to get mine on sale for about 2,400 dollars but without the sale, it would have been around 2,800. I am assuming by 6:51 that this is the model that you purchased, if so, just why... The xps 15 would have also been a much better option than spending 2,804 dollars on an ultrabook. The xps 15 and 17 have much better cooling systems than the 13 as well as the option for a graphics card, but the 13 does not. I am defiantly not recommending the xps 13 as you stated in your video and I have seen other people having the same issues as you. Hi mate, good video i went through 2 replacements and spent one and half month having laptop in warranty services. 100% agree with everything you said there, it;s super frustrating owning this laptop but still cant help myself every time i open it up (gorgeous!). Anyway the HDR is best to leave it off all the time. Difference is almost impossible to notice on such a small screen. The overheating thing has been around for a while, I had same issue on my previous laptop Asus. It is a Modern Standby issue from Microsoft, some manufactures are able to tackle it bit better Dell unfortunately is the worst offender. Turning it off through registry just caused even more issues like not waking up at all, or getting stuck at Dells logo when waking up. What I do and it works 100% of the time is go to power mode and enable Hibernation after certain period of time. I do this on both plugged and unplugged. On battery I set 15min and 45 min when plugged in. Let me know if that worked for you.

    About one months ago I picked up an XPS 13 9305 and judging by the comments it seems many of these issues are ongoing for the series. For the past 10+ years I'd been using Lenovo's but the quality had been deteriorating over that time, my T61p was a great machine and I have a T420 and T410 both of which still work albeit slow by today's standards. But after a failing W510 and W540 plus two X1 Carbon Yoga's with display issues it was time for a change. I've already had one infamous blue screen with the XPS 13 and it's been so long since I'd last seen one that I assumed they were a thing of the past. I'd heard about the heating problems but so far that thankfully hasn't been an issue. Really hope that the XPS 13 doesn't let me down, so far it's an amazing laptop and the first I've enjoyed using and wanted to use more. Fingers crossed it doesn't suffer the same fate as so many of it's siblings.
    EDIT: But my biggest issue so far is the intermittent crackling of the audio. Apparently another ongoing problem, again without any clear solution.

    Thanks a lot for this review. I seems really honest as it is balanced, between the screen and the keyboard - and ... the rest. Really instructive.
    I seems your issues are linked to the "hibernate" function. Maybe it's a malfunction in windows, maybe it's a hardware problem, I don't know.

    Hi, I would like to know whether I only have problem with my touchpad or not. At the bottom (where you have left/right buttons) its very easy to click however at the top of the touchpad its very hard and its even bending the whole top of touchpad. Do you need to apply bigger force to click on the top or its just my touchpad? Thanks

      So I experience a typical click gradient for a diving mechanism touchpad where it’s easier clicking at the bottom and harder at the top. But I usually touch to click or don’t click that frequently at the top so it’s never really been an issue.

    I’m about to get my 9310 tomorrow 7th Dec 2020 we’ll see....my friend has a 9300 where he was having some issues, apparently there was a bios update that seemed to resolve things after he applied it. I know it certainly fixed a problem with the laptop behaving strangely after being put into sleep mode.
    Also I think Windows may have something to do with some of these sleep issues, I only say this because after a recent Windows update my desktop PC is behaving in a similar way. Put the PC to sleep and it will just randomly wake up and start running...had the machine for years and it never did this until a recent Windows update, not yet found a solution.

While the speakers on the 2020 probably are louder, doesn't the sound have less high frequencies because of those bottom firing speakers where in previous models speakers where on both sides so more open if you understand my concern?

      Some Dells overheat compared to other Windows laptops, but Mac's overhead in general because they are not designed properly and do not have the required cooling installed. For the Dells that have this issue, it is mostly because of Windows problems and I recommend to anyone buying a laptop with pre-installed windows (whatever the brand) to do a clean install because often brands put in their own software that constantly runs in the background without your permission.

This got really annoying so I searched up on how to fix it. Turns out this was an issue on Sony's part, where their device's firmware just doesn't work well with Windows. A reddit thread suggestion was able to fix the stuttering issues by flashing an older Realteak Driver, and it worked fine, but it resulted in a new issue where toggling the bluetooth off on my laptop would lead to Windows crashing and forcing the laptop to reboot. I just got my new XPS 13 9310 2-in-1 last week, and have already had the issue described at 3:07 occur multiple times. Basically daily. One could ensure that the laptop has gone to sleep before putting it into a bag, but there is no power indicator on this laptop! That's right, no LED that turns on when the laptop is on or that flashes when the laptop is in sleep. Huge oversight. I've spent hours with Dell support trying to deal with this issue with no luck. Do yourself a favor and avoid this laptop. I'm coming from a 2018 HP Spectre x360 13t, which I cannot recommend highly enough, and would have kept it forever if it hadn't been out dated (8th gen i7). It was also easy to get all day out of the battery. I haven't run the XPS 13 down yet in one use, but after only a couple hours it's already down to ~50%. The XPS 13 also only slow charges my phone via the USB ports (in any mode, off, on , or on AC charger) while the Specctre charged at high speed in any of those three modes. Oh, the XPS 13 doesn't have a fullsize USB port - FAIL. I highly recommend you look at the new HP Spectre x360 and avoid the XPS 13 9300 series if you're on the market for a new laptop!

Got fixed in 2018 by warranty. After updating tp Win 20H2 it shows an error message for the bluetooth stack... but I plan to replace it soon.. It has 4GB RAM and 128 SSD. But that was enough for me...Now I am thinking about installing Linux, just for fun.

    I would say go for the 2019 XPS 13, the 2020 model doesn't have dedicated page up / down keys which is going to be a nightmare for those doing productivity work. Closing down apps you are not using is a good habit to get into as it helps significantly with battery life. Modern standby is the culprit but, closing down apps you are not using stops the hot laptop on sleep issue. It's always nice to open your laptop and see that your emails have been downloaded ready to go, or that download you was waiting for finished. It's all about changing your mind set, modern standby doesn't have to be your enemy if used correctly. Loosing 10% of battery life over night is not a bad thing if useful tasks are getting completed.

      I actually think the sleep issue is much worse than some minor battery drain. Like I am talking my whole battery goes dead after 4-5hours in sleep and my laptop feeling like it's just come out of an oven. That's about the same battery life as just having the laptop on 😂

    I agree that reinstalling windows is a ridiculous "fix" after paying $2,000. Thanks for this review. I'm buying a lenovo

    That overheating issue you have was on my 2015 XPS. Same super hot battery drain as you have. And they haven’t fixed it yet. I had to downsize and had to choose between my Mccbook and XPS, both from 2015. I choose the MacBook without question. All because of the fact that it’s stress free, not because I love macOS or anything else.

    The issue is that Dell ships laptops without hibernate function enabled by default. I own Dell Latitude high class business laptop, same thing happened. You have to go to power settings, enable hibernate after 45-60 minutes or so, when in sleep mode. This will put your laptop to super low-power mode once it spend X minutes in the sleep mode.
