Hi Josh, thanks for this update, I just received my 9310 2in1 this morning, and I now feel a lot better about the purchase. After about 30 mins of setting things up, I ended up with a score of 2154 on Cinebench R20, so good to see the performance is better than first expected!
I just ordered this new xps with 16gb ram, 512 storage, and the regular screen (no touch). I probably watched every video there is about new laptops, and this little guy definitely got me. Thanks Josh!
This was really awesome, Josh! It felt like a more relaxed and natural pace, and much more like talking person to person, which is something I really appreciate from a RUclipsr! I also like this kind of background because it feels more relatable/personable. Well done!!! Really appreciated the details and insights of your review, too!
I really enjoyed your more informal and offhand delivery in this episode. I also just received my own 9310 this week. My experience on battery life is consistent with what you say - that it's not so great on this model. That's disappointing, because my primary use case is on airline tray tables where battery life matters. I also prefer the stiffer hinges on prior models that required too hands to open the lid. Otherwise though, all good. No laptop is perfect, and I'm still very happy with the 9310. Oh, and the wider keyboard -- introduced in the 9300 -- is a joy to type on. The keyboard is a welcome improvement. This is my third XPS-13, btw. Nothing has yet swayed me away from this design. I like what Dell has been doing with it.
WELCOME TO ARZONA JOSH!!! My family has lived in Phoenix area for over 30 years so I know it well. You will love it there!. Just a note for anyone who comes across this video 5 months later as Dell is discounting the 11th Gen XPS: If you need the processing power and want an i7 XPS, you're going to get a generally good laptop with shorter-than-you-may-want battery life and a tendency to run very hot. That is if you don't get a defective unit from Dell (common complaints on Reddit include very, very poor battery life, lots of light bleed on the screen, a wonky touchpad, and sticky keys (especially the space bar)). On the other hand, even though Josh disses the i3 model, if you only need a laptop for productivity (word processing, spreadsheets, watching RUclips, Slack, Discord, Zoom, etc.) then really give the i3 a look. I've owned *three* XPS 13 9310s: the i7, the i5, and the i3. I first bought the i7, but returned it as the battery life was awful, it ran super hot, and there was too much light bleed. I replaced it with an i5 model which faced exactly the same problems (only this time with added light bleed and a space bar that got stuck). Finally, like Goldilocks and the three bears, I gave it one last try -- the i3 model. The battery life is 6-8 hours. There's no noticeable heat. The display is very good (minimal light bleed, so I lucked out). I don't use this for intensive tasks like Premiere Pro or compiling code - just Office, Acrobat, and your run-of-the-mill office apps. For those purposes, it really is very good.
Good luck and my god give more then you need , thanks for sharing with us your personal information, we are happy for you, nowadays almost no one tell these things

The only thing I wish Josh would do during his in depth reviews on individual laptops is state all the specs, and price, which helps viewer frame review wrt others. Review is great and honest otherwise (some link outs on other review vids don't send viewer to exact spec-ed laptop)
One video I was watching about tiger lake suggested that because of options that the vendor can select regarding the performance and TDP choices there can be differences between individual machines under identical conditions due to long-term differences in how the individual owners operate their laptop and the workloads they use them for. The optimizations found tune each machine based on these parameters. So, it is no longer a case of Look at the specs and runs the benchmarks. Then declare the performance for all machines of that model. There won't be orders of magnitude difference but there will be a few percentage points between machines over time as the tuning functions adjust parameters to balance for dominant graphics use versus dominant CPU use as an example. This explains the differences you found in your testing.

Your reviews really help me. I am searching for a new laptop to replace my current and old MacBook Pro mid-2015. I work as a full-stack web developer, and 100% of the time, I am using docker containers to run my development environment. Docker Desktop on macOS sucks, so currently, I use Multipass to "mimic" what I'd have with WSL2 on Linux. I live in Brazil and, because of COVID-19, I won't be in the US this year. I was planning to bring a new laptop in December because Brazil's prices are way too high than in the US. Here we have only XPS13 9300 with 16GB RAM. I wonder if that will be good enough for a few months if I replace my current MBP 2015 with 16GB of RAM but a very weaker CPU. I can also get a new MBP 2020 16" with 64GB of RAM and Intel i9 for 3x more of the price of the Dell XPS 13. Josh, could you give me your thoughts on this scenario? Any advice will be appreciated.
@@JustJoshTech thanks! Even if we compare with XPS 15 or 17? The issue is that XPS 15/17 and the MBP16, in my case, won't have that much difference in their prices. ANd migrating to Windows will force me to change my current workflow.
I just bought the low res version of this laptop - should arrive from Dell in a couple of days... Update: well received my Dell XPS 13 9310 today, 7th Dec 2020....and after using for today I’ve already decided it will be going back to Dell. Spent the whole day doing updates to both Windows, Bios, software etc. However like many others have reported I have the screen flickering issue (screen goes black, and then totally breaks up) happens really randomly but from what I’ve seen not when I’m watching video content. It a real shame because otherwise I absolutely love the machine - still not decided if I should get a replacement (not convinced a replacement will not have the issue) or get a completely different machine.
Given the developments in the market and the impact of the pandemic, I am spending the year biding my time and watching the turtles and the hares run around the track. I grabbed the XPS 17 and have been incredibly happy with it. I love the 16:10 screen. It runs warm but I am using it as a desktop replacement right now.
I can't afford the 9310 but over here in Australia, we have a 9305 available. It's essentially the old chassis (16:9) etc but with the Intel 11th gen CPU's. Having heard what Josh said about the 9300 and 9310, do folks think the 9305 would be an OK buy?
Thanks for the honest feedback, Josh. It seems that Tiger lake may yet offer Intel some hope, of course depending on what Zen 3 brings to the table. Looking forward to seeing the new place you get. Keep up the awesome work, Josh
This video as other videos on your channel is actual premium content, thanks as always for your honesty, comparisons and various perspectives on this laptops, devices and platforms, specially with this new consolidated concept of ultrabooks. Btw is it possible for you to review the Lenovo ideapad slim 7 with amd? And have you think about making a review on a 2 in 1 device that really deserves some attention or even a top 5 or something related to those devices? As always thanks for the quality content
Recent video drivers have made substantial improvements in gaming performance making games like Fortnight much smoother and more playable compared to release date performance..
I have an hp laptop with an i5 1135g7 chip, and it is fast! With the quiet setting in ho command center (bios), it runs at like 40c that is cool for a laptop Maybe it is just that you have the i7 version
This Laptop starts at $2.3k here in Scandinavia, I really like it but Its tough to pull the trigger considering the risk in buying one, and how the price is around Macbooks, as well as the new 14 inch and ARM ones coming out in the near future.
Fellow Aussie. Dell's got these for $2463 ATM and Lenovo's got the X1 Extreme gen 3's for $2399 ATM. I've got a 16" MBP but it's impossibly hot on your lap, basically laptop stand with monitor only. What are your thoughts?? Web dev / DevOps and DBA 5-6 days a week for me. Kinda of love that portable size but then the X1 has a great graphics card for playing some CS:go at lunch
Hi Josh, does the XPS 9310 get warm/hot during regular office work (Word, Excel), internet browsing or RUclips? How loud does it get during these use cases?
@@JustJoshTech I saw your video on Lenovo Slim 7 Pro. I know it can be hard to remember but which one do you think is less warm during normal use? My main use of a laptop is actually on my lap doing tutorials and coding. I love your videos as your are the only one talking about coding.
I recently ordered the 9310 (still awaiting shipment). I currently have the 7390 which is an amazing laptop. However, I just cannot live with the 16:9 screen any more. You absolutely need 16:10 if you are doing any kind of productivity work. Such a shame as my 7390 is absolutely perfect in every other way.
Oh shit! Welcome to AZ!!! I live nearby to Scottsdale and I hope you like it here! If you have any questions about AZ or the Phoenix area, I'd be glad to give you my thoughts :)
@TheGoat what stability? amd is the most stable processor i've ever used and my tuf A15 works better than my razer stealth, amd is our lord and saviour
@TheGoat I've had trouble with intel for the same reason, and as for " working out the kinks" that's just a fanboy thing to say, intel chips are more vulnerable to cpu level malware too, amd is just as reliable, and price to performance ratio just blows intel away, I'm guessing you must be an intel fanboy
@TheGoat see that's my whole point , it depends on the need, and by your comment "amd isn't that stable", you're essentially saying that to people who hadn't had a problem with amd processors till now, to which I responded with a superfluous statement, "amd is our lord and saviour"
Yeah. Im still working on that in the studio. I haven't been able to put up much acoustic dampening till the furniture arrived. But I should be able to start adding it now
Hello JustJosh, Thank you for the review... Now, Can you please confirm or deny if you also facing such issues in the newer dell xps 13 9310 (11th Gen) too? Because, the Older (10th gen) dell xps 13 9300 had many critical issues... Have seen a video of Dell xps 13 9300 (10th Gen) wherein it has a lot of issues like: 1.) Sleep mode NOT working infact the Dell xps 13 9300 gets heated up like a fryer inside the backpack even in sleep mode (refuses to sleep i guess). 2.) Then there is the Windows Hello Face and/or Windows Hello Fingerprint unlock refusing to detect/work while waking it from sleep (a restart is required to solve this problem). 3.) The battery drain issue as well on the xps 13 9300 model eating/ draining battery even in sleep mode. Wirh all these issues for such a premium laptop brand like Dell, I wud go for the M1 Macbook Air 13" (my current is also a early 2k14 MBA 13") running on Catalina. Thanks in advance...
I had one of the 9300s and sent it back after it blue screened 3 times in a row due to all of Dell's bios updates. Still holding onto my 2016 HP Omen until the 14 inch Spectre is released...but you may entice me to try the XPS again.
Your best video yet, really love the way you are structuring these reviews and mention things other reviewers don't pick up on! I ended up ordering one because of this review, but it's such a shame Dell's QC is still absolutely all over the place. I've had my 9310 for about 4 days now and straight out the box my trackpad was misaligned, the speakers don't work and both edges of my display have really noticeable backlight bleed (even during normal use). My trackpad is so misaligned that when I pick the laptop up, the trackpad will actually click itself! Really doesn't feel like a £1,400 laptop ☹ Would you consider reviewing the new Huawei Matebook 14? I had a Matebook 13 2020 AMD and it was a really interesting device, would love to see your opinions on the 14.
Thanks for the positive note. Wow re QC. Yeah I had some bad XPS laptops in my time. More so the 15 inch. Noted re the Matebook. I have a tone to review though so unsure ill get to it. But noted
Thanks for your update on the XPS 13 :)! I'm glad you gave it another try. I think I'll be buying mine today knowing that driver/BIOS updates are improving the laptop. Feedback for reviews: Don't you think it would be more beneficial to mention both the cold benchmark scores as well as the warm benchmark scores? I am not sure overall, but it does matter. E. g. if I just run a single video export (possibly with an eGPU), it won't take long, so I might care about the "perfect" boost performance it can sustain for a short amount of time.
The summers aside, AZ really is a nice place to live. I was looking to head out there until Covid decided otherwise. Guess we'll see once the pandemic is over. Check out the El Mirage area while you're there. Very nice area. Love the videos BTW.
Keep the good job Josh ! Can you review the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 (Or IdeaPad in US) With Rizen 4800U and compare it with your Dell XPS 9310 ? Thnx a lot !
@JustJosh Great job on this new video Josh... How do you live with just two ports? One of them has be used for power. You need a really expensive thunderbolt docking station to plug in a 4K/60Hz display into the second port and still be able to use USB devices (like keyboard, external drive). And it's not that easy to find a good docking station.
I'd like to ask your take on whether I should get an i7-1165g7 laptop or an r7-4700u laptop for coding, light gaming (csgo), light video/photo editing(school projects). Also both laptops are similarly specced 16gb ram and 512gb ssd on intel and 1tb ssd on amd. Their biggest diference would be form factor as the intel model is a 16:10 14in clamshell laptop(with thunderbolt 4) while the amd is a 16:9 13.3in 2in1 with pen included in the box. I'm currently torn when choosing between the two since inour market they are priced exactly the same and since I'm still a freshmen, I'm not sure what features/spec sheet would benefit me in the long run for the next 4 to 5 years in college. I'd like your help please. P.S. The name of the laptops (in case you might like to review them) are: Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Lenovo Yoga 6 A simple opinion would do. Thank you.
Upward firing speakers? Aren't they on the sides? Also MobileTechReview got 9-11 hours of battery life on the FHD version at 150 nits brightness and "without trying hard", so the FHD version is definitely much better than the 4k one.
Thank you for this review! 1 year later, I bought the exact same specs with a good rebate and love it. The newer versions no longer have the carbon, which I love. It does feel soooo premium and yes battery life is not the best. No problem for me as I plug in into a hub providing power through USB-C

It runs warm but I am using it as a desktop replacement right now.
we went from hating 9300 badly to loving 9310 very quickly.. hopefully its gonna be true in the long run too. fingers crossed.
I can't afford the 9310 but over here in Australia, we have a 9305 available. It's essentially the old chassis (16:9) etc but with the Intel 11th gen CPU's. Having heard what Josh said about the 9300 and 9310, do folks think the 9305 would be an OK buy?
Yes! Thanks for the clarification. Don't take my comments from the last vid too harshly, obviously most cpu would throttle down after pl1 expires.
I can't wait for next Tiger Lake Laptop. Please review it soon
I have an hp laptop with an i5 1135g7 chip, and it is fast!
With the quiet setting in ho command center (bios), it runs at like 40c that is cool for a laptop
Maybe it is just that you have the i7 version
Its pretty good during those use cases. I use it for that and its fine
Could we just have an AMD ryzen version already 😒😒
@TheGoat what stability? amd is the most stable processor i've ever used and my tuf A15 works better than my razer stealth, amd is our lord and saviour
@TheGoat I've had trouble with intel for the same reason, and as for " working out the kinks" that's just a fanboy thing to say, intel chips are more vulnerable to cpu level malware too, amd is just as reliable, and price to performance ratio just blows intel away, I'm guessing you must be an intel fanboy
@@doomguy2135 Didn’t you just call AMD your “lord and savior?” Doesn’t that make you an AMD fanboy?
@TheGoat see that's my whole point , it depends on the need, and by your comment "amd isn't that stable", you're essentially saying that to people who hadn't had a problem with amd processors till now, to which I responded with a superfluous statement, "amd is our lord and saviour"
If you like 1h of battery life ok, dell will make it just for you.
U helped me buy this laptop
How is it overall battery
@@saiprithvi6116 it is well cery good if you consider 1080p model
ngl I like this video format better. You look much more comfortable.
This video is very pleasant the ears compared to your previous videos. There is not much reverb. 😌
Yeah. Im still working on that in the studio. I haven't been able to put up much acoustic dampening till the furniture arrived. But I should be able to start adding it now
Hello JustJosh,
Thank you for the review...
Now,
Can you please confirm or deny if you also facing such issues in the newer dell xps 13 9310 (11th Gen) too?
Because, the Older (10th gen) dell xps 13 9300 had many critical issues... Have seen a video of Dell xps 13 9300 (10th Gen) wherein it has a lot of issues like:
1.) Sleep mode NOT working infact the Dell xps 13 9300 gets heated up like a fryer inside the backpack even in sleep mode (refuses to sleep i guess).
Still holding onto my 2016 HP Omen until the 14 inch Spectre is released...but you may entice me to try the XPS again.
any improvement on battery life with new bios updates ? 3-6 hours is really scaring me ? must be better than that ?
Can't decide between this and the x1 carbon :(
Man! This display is so bright on 100%, it would burn a hole in my head. 😆
Ordered the OLED version yet?
Your best video yet, really love the way you are structuring these reviews and mention things other reviewers don't pick up on!
I ended up ordering one because of this review, but it's such a shame Dell's QC is still absolutely all over the place. I've had my 9310 for about 4 days now and straight out the box my trackpad was misaligned, the speakers don't work and both edges of my display have really noticeable backlight bleed (even during normal use). My trackpad is so misaligned that when I pick the laptop up, the trackpad will actually click itself! Really doesn't feel like a £1,400 laptop ☹
Would you consider reviewing the new Huawei Matebook 14? I had a Matebook 13 2020 AMD and it was a really interesting device, would love to see your opinions on the 14.
Thanks for the positive note. Wow re QC. Yeah I had some bad XPS laptops in my time. More so the 15 inch. Noted re the Matebook. I have a tone to review though so unsure ill get to it. But noted
Looks like the XPS line is getting back on track.
Does the palm rest pick up fingerprints and smudges easily? I think the white one doesn't show but curious about the black model.
Great video.
The summers aside, AZ really is a nice place to live. I was looking to head out there until Covid decided otherwise. Guess we'll see once the pandemic is over.
Check out the El Mirage area while you're there. Very nice area.
Love the videos BTW.
What's your accent called?
It is new to me. So smooth.
Did you change your camera? The colors are much more natural in this video.
Still the a6600. We are getting better at grading. Thanks!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Josh finally likes the best voted 13 inch laptop!!!!!!
As a mbp owner I don’t find many Windows laptops that appealing but this one does look rather good
Love your reviews Josh, please review the upcoming 14" Lenovo Yoga 9i! especially against the XPS 11th gen
I strongly support this as an idea for a video ❤️❤️❤️
What do you think of the XPS 13 9305 model? I already bought it last week
hi Josh is there a reason, you didn't try the 9310 2-in-1 since it has the vapour cooling which would allow it to run cooler, perform better etc?
Can you check out the dell Inspiron 14 7000 2 in 1 with a Ryzen 7 4700u and 16 Gb RAM
Dude, why don’t you have a ton of subs. Your content is A1
Thanks mate!
Keep the good job Josh !
Can you review the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 (Or IdeaPad in US) With Rizen 4800U and compare it with your Dell XPS 9310 ?
Thnx a lot !
Will try. Waiting for Lenovo to send it to me :(
@@JustJoshTech Aw just sell one of your XPS 9300 and buy the slim 7 ;)
Dpc latency problems ??
which color option is better - carbon fiber or Arctic white ??
Still feels warm but I like it. < Thats what she said
This video feels less scripted, and more natural. Well done!
Nice machine. What are the specs?
Waiting for the 9510 i guess. Anyone kmow when it might come out?
@JustJosh Great job on this new video Josh... I like how this one was done, scenery was video and I enjoy learning about your personal life, it’s encouraging I’ve been watching you from your “Mercury white razor blade video” but haven’t subscribed yet (which is funny) but I think I’m finally about to subscribe :) cheers mate! 🥂 P.S. I love Arizona too :)
Welcome. Thanks for the comment. Yeah Arizona is lovely!
P.S. The name of the laptops (in case you might like to review them) are:
Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i
Lenovo Yoga 6
A simple opinion would do. Thank you.
Good luck with the property hunting. I have family in Arizona and they love it.
how does the fan noise compare to like the yoga or zenbook? Is it silent generally?
Upward firing speakers? Aren't they on the sides? Also MobileTechReview got 9-11 hours of battery life on the FHD version at 150 nits brightness and "without trying hard", so the FHD version is definitely much better than the 4k one.
Thank you for this review! 1 year later, I bought the exact same specs with a good rebate and love it. The newer versions no longer have the carbon, which I love. It does feel soooo premium and yes battery life is not the best. No problem for me as I plug in into a hub providing power through USB-C
hi! Is the battery life still that poor today? Or did they fix it via updates?
Thanks!
wait, is the speaker upward firing???
