Being a reloader, the 270 is miles ahead of the Creedmoor in potential performance. When you've reached the limit of the 270 case just rechamber your rifle and buy some dies for the 270 Ackley Improved and rock on.

@@AlaskanBallistics I left out an important fact, booboo, I was using 81/2 primers ,which can't be found , & even hit 3080 fps with 150gr BT😊 from my rugar m77 stainless. Which I comp,prepped.as well. I always load to a .5 grn or less.& Match weight bullets identically ,see rl22 was my competion compressed load😊 lucky for this rifel😊 , & myself.
I love the comparisons. I have both. I shoot a 143gr Hornady in that Creedmoor. Last year, I took a bull elk with my Creedmoor. It was hard to even get them to allow me to use it. I've taken elk with my 270, they were concerned that the creedmoor just wouldn't be enough. Took a more precise shot they said, but I got it done in one shot 160 yds. My choice would be my 270. I've got into that creedmoor because after two shoulder surgeries, it's just a little easier on me. I think this is a great comparison. I'm not one of those Creedmoor guys who believe there is nothing greater than...lol...
Yeah that bullet is slower in a 6.5 creedmoor so it shouldn't break up as fast. Just don't hit a shoulder bone. Check out episode 2 of my 6.5 creedmoor vs. 25-06 and you'll see why. But hey if they're accurate and you can make a perfect shot, don't let my opinion stop you! Godspeed and good hunting!
That is actually quite fast for a 130 gr 270 load. I don't think I've ever seen one reach that speed from a 22 or even a 24" bbl Keep up the good work brother. I appreciate ya!
@@AlaskanBallistics it may very well tell some difference! Having to cut through the fog might get some insight into climate differences. But i think we will see the same results as your tests. I don’t think 6.5 will beat out a 270win.
The 270 would be my choice. It's one helluva round that I honestly believe is under rated when people think of bigger game and extended ranges. My friends uncle took everything under the sun in North America, the guy is a professional hunter and taxidermist, he's even hunted with Ted Nugent, that lucky sob, lol. After talking with him, his favorite gun was a Weatherby and he prefers the 270 over everything else. I had no reason to doubt the man, especially when he had a wall mounted photograph with him and Ted Nugent smiling over a couple big ass black bears they harvested.
I think the .270 was used for lots of the same tasks 6.5 creedmore is used for now but I still think.270 is king and the the "such great BC" isn't everything

270 is my favorite by far. 6.5 is pretty new and in right now but when you look at the numbers it’s a little overrated. 270 will win every time. Great video. Love the comparisons
@@AlaskanBallistics I don’t mean to bash it or anything. I love when companies make more caliber choices. More choices is good! And yes it works well on medium game. However most people I talk to / hunt with think it’s way more powerful and flatter shooting than it is.

Thank you for watching. I'm a creedmoor fan boy but I know a thing or two about Ballistics and know the .270 ain't bad. My wife will hopefully hunt moose and caribou next year with the .270. The 6.5 savage has been her hunting rifle, but we haven't got a chance for her to use it yet.

I’ve been interested in these calibers lately, thanks for the fun & informative video. I WILL be sharing this video with friends and family because I often argue for the 6.5 creed over 308 or 270 and I guess it’s just time for this guy to eat some crow!
Don't be too hard on yourself, the industry really did the hard sell on the 6.5CM as it was the new hotness. It's basically the man-bun of rifle cartridges, very good for what it was designed for, but the ,270..308/7mm08 are just better for hunting. A buddy of mine just got a 6.5CM for Christmas and he already has a .270, I don't have the heart to tell him it's a step down from what he has.
@@AlaskanBallistics For sure it can hunt, and when I say "man-bun", I don't mean it doesn't have the power to take medium-sized game, I just see it as an answer to a question that hunters in particular weren't asking, especially in the eastern part of the US. Here, the .308, .270, and 30-06 are preferred. I was in a general store up in the north woods of Maine last year and among the very limited stock of ammo they had on the shelf, in center fire, they had 5.56, 30-30, .270, 308, 30-06, 7mag, 300wm and of all things 7mm08. I'm sure lots of hunters are taking the 6.5cm into the woods, but in the Alagash, they don't seem to have caught up to the trends.
What a great comparison. The 270 Win has been a fav of mine for a long time. The Hornady GMX Superformance rounds showed it and the 6.5 Creedmoor to their best. At long range the Creedmoor may edge ahead but inside 300 yards I'm sure the 270 will win the day.
I have rifles in both cartridges. I bought a bunch of rifles to teach grandkids in the family the fine art of shooting. My .270 may be nicer to shoot as it is a Tikka T3x. My 6.5 Creedmore is a Ruger American with the Magpul hunter stock. With the variety of rifles that I bought. My grandkids know which ranges are strong points for a particular cartridge. The .350 Legend has quite a punch in the less 250 yards range. But is easy to shoot. And they understand what a shotgun works best at too!
Love these tests. It proves that most rifle calibres are very capable and help build confidence for the shooter. I would like to know though if you had a 6.5 as a primary hunting rifle and were going to buy something heavier to hunt with in bear territory what would you choose? I hunt with a 6.5 x 55 that I reload for and it works very well I am looking for a new rifle that I can buy ammo for.and may as well look at something heavier. Thinking about picking up a 3006, 7 mm rem mag or 300 win mag.
. 300 win mag would be my choice out of those. Heavier bullets than the 7mm Rem Mag. Can usually stabilize up to 190gr without special twist rates. I own both 300 win mag and 7mm Rem mag
That's where the 243win shines. Deer, mule deer, antelope, coyotes, goats, sheep, ect. When I lived in Nebraska, an old man I met at the gun range was shooting a 243Win, he claimed he has harvested elk, mule deer, and whitetails with his rifle and some deer were taken beyond 400 yards with it. I don't know how true that is, but I imagine if he was punching the center of his target out at 200 yards, he probably has, which was probably more critical shot placement than terminal performance of the round he was using. I can't imagine a 243Win doing much of anything at those ranges on deer other than ice picking or tumbling.
Guys 223 kills plenty in Africa and you think 6.5 is a varmint caliber? Stop shooting these animals in the butt and learn your kill shots. I live and hunt in Africa by the way.
I love both guns, but I've had the best hits with the 6.5 I've ever had. The superformance sst ammo is the best I've shot. Using a ruger precision at over 700 yards I can pop a 8 Oz baby coke can
I like that both can still take down a moose and what my dad and brother said that the animal, ex. Moose, caribou aint going to know the difference with velocity as long good shot placement and my father uses a iron sight mini 14 with head shots
I find it interesting all of these new calibers people are so up on when more than likely there is already a well established caliber that will do the same thing if not better. Sounds boring I know but there really isn't much out there that interests me. MAYBE the .500 Magnum. A buddy had the short barreled one and 700 gr. monolith bullets. It was fun to shoot.

@@AlaskanBallistics any projectile that mushrooms that well does severe damage. 270 just has a sizable advantage because of larger frontal area on impact. I’m trying to be supportive so... I skipped the intro 4:00 ad with whatever the second before your video ever started. I watched the first ad break. 5:30. I watched the first 4:00 of the second Manscape ad break but skipped the last :30 of the two ads in that breaku. Third was a 3:00 break with a :15 for NRA followed by a 2:45 Starscope ad so that means YT thinks a 13:00 video needs 16 total minutes of ads. Good video BTW but things like this ads are just a huge problem for YT marketing OUR content.
@@adamwiech4874 I’ve been asking myself “What’s the big deal?” 1/4-1/2” longer action? A few ounces of weight? At this point for a short action hunting rifle I’d choose 7mm-08 over 6.5 CM (already have 308). For a competitive target shooter 6.5 CM has a lot of advantages.

Agreed, But if its the same shooter, you can normally see which is more accurate of the two......"for that shooter"👍. I'm always careful myself when I tell people accuracy results...I say with me shooting,that gun with that ammo, in those conditions, x is what I got 😆

I'm more of a target shooter these days so accuracy interests me more then terminal prefomance..... cause every animal on earth has been taken with a ton of different cartridges. for accuracy I have found berger bullets usually out preform everything . ..but most hunters don't use them........ @@AlaskanBallistics Depends on where you're getting your factory ammo, but I don't disagree. There is huge misinformation about the safe pressure ranges of the mil-surp swedes but there are still modern rifles being produced in that caliber in Europe today and they don't downgrade their ammo for it. People throughout Scandinavia have been taking moose & caribou with the 6.5 Swedes for a hundred years. I hand load, so it isn't an issue to me. It's the factory ammo that is under powered, not the cartridge. The 6.5 creedmor has a case volume of 3.12 The 6.5 Swede has a case volume of 3.68... I can get five grains more powder in the Swede. The .270 Win has a case volume of 4.34 by comparison so, still the king of the hill.
Last 2 years I’ve only used 6.5 cm. I’ve bagged About 40 something chital bucks and does. Lost 7 with it Very similar # as years I’ve used 270 Or years with 308 , 243 I Don’t shoot at game past 300 yards. My favorite caliber is what ever I’m carrying. I like to shoot the same gun for awhile before I switch. Being comfortable /accustomed to Gun weight, stock feel , draw ,swing, target accusation ,trigger , are more important to me than caliber kinda! As my dad would say “ my only concern is how full my meat bags are!…. The rest I’ll let your mother worry about!” Translation: son I love you very much just try your best and stay focused while hunting and everything will work out, xoxoxo
Alaskan Ballistics if I still had my 270 I wouldn’t waste my money on these new things and I would still take a 270 over them. Now I’m a 308 guy in a semi auto.
@@AlaskanBallistics the ballistics on the 6.8 are very nice. they worked with Browning so there will be a good amount of rifles to choose. its more powerful than a 7mm, 300 win and 338win with less recoil. and its a short action, just a super 270 i like it

Browning rifles absolutely suck at throat erosion. I had one that was awful. I'll never buy another. When i see a Remington, savage, tikka, bergara in that cartridge, I'll buy a 6.8 western. But the cartridge will die if only the sorry browning and new Winchesters are chambered for it.
Alot of people don't believe me when I tell them the 270 win is significantly more powerful than the 6.5 creed. Ballistically it's much closer to the PRC than it is the creedmoor. 500 foot pounds more energy is fairly significant. Hunting larger than deer sized game I take the 270 all day long. I know Chuck doesn't care for the ELDX bullets but I have had good luck with them on whitetail. My 270 pushes the 145 eldx at about 3050 from a 24 inch barrel with IMR 4831.
Yeah glad you've had better luck with that varmit bullet than me. Don't hit a caribou rib bone with one lol. Yeah I'd much rather have a 6.5 prc than a .270
@@AlaskanBallistics yeah im not sure if I've just been lucky. Shot a big doe at about 200 yards with the 143 eldx in a creedmoor and it broke both shoulders and still exited. In my experience they've performed much like an interlock does.

You are getting more than the box states. I was thinking about GMX or TTSX for my 270 win but since i do not reload may go for the GMX factory rounds. I have a 22" barrel also on a sauer so really optimistic about these as with that much velocity it would creep on being a 600yds bullet with minimum velocity of 2000fps
Ttsx opens up better than gmx at lower velocities, lrx is even better. I hunt with nothing but lrx with my 6.5x284 Norma and my 7mm Rem mag. Farthest kill with 7mm Rem Mag was 459 yards on a nice cow caribou.
@@AlaskanBallistics From memory GMX down to 2000fps , TTSX 1800fps and LRX 1600fps. Tough choice what to stick with as i hardly get over 400ish meters and if i get speeds like you in this test will be good enough to 500 yards. Decisions decisions if only there was not a big choice like this hahaha

The 270 has two problems 1. The 3006 is more versatile and 2. The 7mm Remington magnum and this is probably why its popularity is in steady decline. The 6.5 creedmoor seems to be a very fine deer rifle.
I have a random question, if you were hiking and were confronted by a large black bear ,and you have a Taurus judge on you for protection, do you choose a .45 LC Hornedy critical defence round,? or a .410 Winchester PD-XI triple disc and BB's?
I choose to sell the judge and get a better option. Two reasons... 1) Taurus still makes a horrible quality weapon. I'll never trust my life to their junk. Even a few months ago working the counter at cabelas we had several taurua judges that would fail to lock one you closed the cylinder. You could sit there and spin the cylinder for minutes until it locked. I've also seen cylinder advancement springs break. 2) the Taurus isn't strong enough to handle the hot 45 lc bear loads. You want the hot hardcast or copper solids for guaranteed penetration, they aren't whitetails, even all a small black bear you have to penetrate, they're really tough. I'd want the solid slug round if I chose to carry it. Sell that thing and get you a glock 40 10mm. You'll be glad you did. I know that's not the answer you were looking for. Godspeed my friend

@@AlaskanBallistics I have ran +P 45 LC critical defence loads ,and all types of .410 ammo through my Judge public defender, the stainless steel version, not the poly frame, and I have not had 1 malfunction, or failure to fire, my question was do you think that a +P 45 LC hollow point would be more lethal than a .410 Winchester PD-XI 3 disk and BB's load at close range? I have no dought that the pistol will function and cycle very reliably, you might of had a different answer if I owned a S+W governor instead of my Judge ,it's the ammo and it's effectivenes on a bear that I wanted your opinion on ! This is exactly the fairest type of comparison between two cartridges. Definitely NOT apples to oranges comparison. When comparing cartridges one should ALWAYS do what you did here and compare the same brand and style of bullet and most importantly the similar SECTIONAL DENSITY and similar BC (as close as possible ). Sectional density in any style of bullet must be similar for it to be apples to apples. That is what you did. This used to be common knowledge but over the last dozen years this seems to be lost science. Well, not really, I think most people are ignoring SD and sometimes BC as well when comparing and pumping their favorite cartridge. SD of the 120 gr 6.5 GMX is .246. And SD of the 130 gr .270 GMX is .242. So they are very close to same. BCs are similar as well, the 6.5 at .450 and the .270 at .460. All too often nowadays you see the 6.5 Creedmoor using a 143 gr ELDX being compared with a .270 that is using a flat based lead tipped lower BC bullet from another brand that has very dissimilar sectional density and dissimilar BC all in order to “prove” the 6.5 Creedmoor to be superior…hog wash. You did good however. As apples to apples as it gets.
So what about at 1000 yards? Of course you probably can't do that without shooting a lot of ammo. But my question is what would you choose at 1000 yards 6.5 or 270?
@@AlaskanBallistics I shot the Winchester copper impact in both, One shot they drop, Whitetails in Georgia, This past deer season, 6 doe with the 6.5, 3 with the 270, I couldn’t say which one killed faster, Same result on all complete past through, Never found a bullet, The 6.5s kills were from 30 yards to 250 yards, 270 was 100 - 200 yards, I had a shoulder injury this past deer, Had to leave the big magnum calibers in the safe, First time I had my 270 out in 20 or so years, I think the magnums will miss a few deer seasons, I’m even pulling my old 243 wssm out, Haven’t shot it in years, I always say buy and shoot as many caliber’s as you can, Don’t limit yourself to one caliber.
The 270 has 60 percent more recoil ,everyone shoots far better with light kickers.As far as realistic hunting,not fantasy long range hunting on medium game either will do the same job.

Imagine if the 6.5 Creedmoor had been around for decades, and then the 270 Winchester came along.... I think it would make the Creedmoor obsolete. I don't get the Creedmoor craze. Who wants to be shooting game at extreme long ranges with such a small caliber anyway? Madness.
It's for the m110/sr25 platform for long range engagements. Flatter shooting than .308 so for a long range ar10 platform it makes more sense. But as far as hunting game past 300 yards it's really a little light on power and requires good shot placement.

Welcome to the effects of marketing. The 6.5 really isn't doing anything the 6.5 Swedish hasn't been doing since 1894 (128 years) and the 270 Winchester since 1925 (98 years). Marketing tries to convince you that you'll never kill anything unless your shooting the latest wonder cartridge or 404 Jeffrey based magnum.
Well it does everything the 6.5 by 55 Swede But with a smaller case capacity and a true short action Plus allows for the proper length of those long bullets. It knocks a caribou over quite effectively
A better test would have been 6.5 prc or a 6.5 rpm, You took the weakest 6.5 down in power and bullet weight against a long action, I Like the performance of both bullets, Do another test with one of the other 6.5s, Or do one with 270 against 3006, Both long action, My first bolt action rifle was a 270, I bought it in the mid 80s, Old Winchester still have it today, Haven’t shoot it in about 20 years, After seeing this video I’m going to try and find some of these bullets for it, Hell I haven’t seen any bullets on the shelves sense SLEEPY JOE STOLED THE ELECTION, To anyone that enjoy’s Hunting and Shooting don’t limit yourself to one gun or caliber , Buy as many caliber as you can enjoy them all, I DO. I don't own one and unfortunately there is no ammo on the shelf for them here anyway. I do have dies and some 165gr ttsx and casings powder and primers. I do plan on getting one or borrowing one If possible but finances are tight and there's at least a couple of other projects first. I hunt with a 7mm Rem Mag mostly and have plenty of videos on that. Also hunt bigger game with my .338 win mag

270 is better than 6.5CM. 308 is better than 270. 300WinMag is better than 308Win. 375H&H is better than 300WinMag... To follow this logic... Why don't we hunt with .50BMG?! 6.5 CM has less recoil. It has lower sound pressure. It has shorter case for short actions. It has better barrel life...than 270 Win. 6.5 is better for varmint and smaller deer species. If you hunt for elk or moose, 270 will be small too. You want something stronger like 300WinMag or 9.3x62...
As with most of these new calibers....they've already been invented decades ago, and are often better. Nothing new in performance, just a new more sexy name, branding and packaging designed to sell guns and ammo.
i notice people are idiots, both consumers and store salesman. no clue what caliber and cartridge they are look at. saw a guy today asking what the 7mm-08 is. ask if it was the 7mm rem mag. the saleman goes it not the 7mm rem mag but uses a 7mm mag bullet. im like ok? not sure if they are clear the confusion or adding more to it.

Which I comp,prepped.as well. I always load to a .5 grn or less.& Match weight bullets identically ,see rl22 was my competion compressed load😊 lucky for this rifel😊 , & myself.
I love a .270 and I would choose a 25/06 over a 6.5 as well!
.25-06 is a lot closer and in factory ammo has less energy at 200 yards than the 6.5 and considerably more wind drift
I love the comparisons. I have both. I shoot a 143gr Hornady in that Creedmoor. Last year, I took a bull elk with my Creedmoor. It was hard to even get them to allow me to use it. I've taken elk with my 270, they were concerned that the creedmoor just wouldn't be enough. Took a more precise shot they said, but I got it done in one shot 160 yds. My choice would be my 270. I've got into that creedmoor because after two shoulder surgeries, it's just a little easier on me. I think this is a great comparison. I'm not one of those Creedmoor guys who believe there is nothing greater than...lol...

That was the bigger concern, but, I haven't had that issue....yet.
Yeah that bullet is slower in a 6.5 creedmoor so it shouldn't break up as fast. Just don't hit a shoulder bone. Check out episode 2 of my 6.5 creedmoor vs. 25-06 and you'll see why. But hey if they're accurate and you can make a perfect shot, don't let my opinion stop you! Godspeed and good hunting!

That is actually quite fast for a 130 gr 270 load. I don't think I've ever seen one reach that speed from a 22 or even a 24" bbl Keep up the good work brother. I appreciate ya!

That humidity in the air might show the bullet a lot.
But i doubt it'll affect expansion much of to 400 yards, which is hard to find a place to hunt that far in the south

The 270 would be my choice. It's one helluva round that I honestly believe is under rated when people think of bigger game and extended ranges. My friends uncle took everything under the sun in North America, the guy is a professional hunter and taxidermist, he's even hunted with Ted Nugent, that lucky sob, lol. After talking with him, his favorite gun was a Weatherby and he prefers the 270 over everything else. I had no reason to doubt the man, especially when he had a wall mounted photograph with him and Ted Nugent smiling over a couple big ass black bears they harvested.
The .270 can get it done that's for sure.

270 is my favorite by far. 6.5 is pretty new and in right now but when you look at the numbers it’s a little overrated. 270 will win every time. Great video. Love the comparisons

Yeah it's definitely meant to compete with the .308 in an AR10 platform for long range that's it. People, like me, have turned it into a hunting gun

Don't be too hard on yourself, the industry really did the hard sell on the 6.5CM as it was the new hotness. It's basically the man-bun of rifle cartridges, very good for what it was designed for, but the ,270..308/7mm08 are just better for hunting. A buddy of mine just got a 6.5CM for Christmas and he already has a .270, I don't have the heart to tell him it's a step down from what he has.

@@AlaskanBallistics For sure it can hunt, and when I say "man-bun", I don't mean it doesn't have the power to take medium-sized game, I just see it as an answer to a question that hunters in particular weren't asking, especially in the eastern part of the US. Here, the .308, .270, and 30-06 are preferred. I was in a general store up in the north woods of Maine last year and among the very limited stock of ammo they had on the shelf, in center fire, they had 5.56, 30-30, .270, 308, 30-06, 7mag, 300wm and of all things 7mm08. I'm sure lots of hunters are taking the 6.5cm into the woods, but in the Alagash, they don't seem to have caught up to the trends.
Yeah it was designed to be a more long range cartridge for the SR25 pattern rifles

What a great comparison. The 270 Win has been a fav of mine for a long time. The Hornady GMX Superformance rounds showed it and the 6.5 Creedmoor to their best. At long range the Creedmoor may edge ahead but inside 300 yards I'm sure the 270 will win the day.
I think 400-500 the .270 is more superior

I believe that between those two the 270 drops less and retains more energy out to 1,000 yards and beyond.

I have rifles in both cartridges. I bought a bunch of rifles to teach grandkids in the family the fine art of shooting. My .270 may be nicer to shoot as it is a Tikka T3x. My 6.5 Creedmore is a Ruger American with the Magpul hunter stock.
With the variety of rifles that I bought. My grandkids know which ranges are strong points for a particular cartridge. The .350 Legend has quite a punch in the less 250 yards range. But is easy to shoot. And they understand what a shotgun works best at too!

Love these tests. It proves that most rifle calibres are very capable and help build confidence for the shooter. I would like to know though if you had a 6.5 as a primary hunting rifle and were going to buy something heavier to hunt with in bear territory what would you choose? I hunt with a 6.5 x 55 that I reload for and it works very well I am looking for a new rifle that I can buy ammo for.and may as well look at something heavier. Thinking about picking up a 3006, 7 mm rem mag or 300 win mag.
. 300 win mag would be my choice out of those. Heavier bullets than the 7mm Rem Mag. Can usually stabilize up to 190gr without special twist rates.

That's where the 243win shines. Deer, mule deer, antelope, coyotes, goats, sheep, ect. When I lived in Nebraska, an old man I met at the gun range was shooting a 243Win, he claimed he has harvested elk, mule deer, and whitetails with his rifle and some deer were taken beyond 400 yards with it. I don't know how true that is, but I imagine if he was punching the center of his target out at 200 yards, he probably has, which was probably more critical shot placement than terminal performance of the round he was using. I can't imagine a 243Win doing much of anything at those ranges on deer other than ice picking or tumbling.
Guys 223 kills plenty in Africa and you think 6.5 is a varmint caliber? Stop shooting these animals in the butt and learn your kill shots. I live and hunt in Africa by the way.

I love both guns, but I've had the best hits with the 6.5 I've ever had. The superformance sst ammo is the best I've shot. Using a ruger precision at over 700 yards I can pop a 8 Oz baby coke can

I like that both can still take down a moose and what my dad and brother said that the animal, ex. Moose, caribou aint going to know the difference with velocity as long good shot placement and my father uses a iron sight mini 14 with head shots

I find it interesting all of these new calibers people are so up on when more than likely there is already a well established caliber that will do the same thing if not better. Sounds boring I know but there really isn't much out there that interests me. MAYBE the .500 Magnum. A buddy had the short barreled one and 700 gr. monolith bullets. It was fun to shoot.

I like the 6.5 because thats what I have. I dont have a 270. But I also have a 30.06 so it fills in the blank spots anyhow.

Modern bullets in old standby caliber is still VERY effective. With game size what it is up North, I'd want the bigger entrance wound.
Me too 7mm or 30 caliber or better. But i wouldn't want to be a moose that gets hit with that 6.5 creedmoor in the gmx or newer cx bullet
@@AlaskanBallistics any projectile that mushrooms that well does severe damage. 270 just has a sizable advantage because of larger frontal area on impact. Bigger entry wound, shooter still has to do his part.

I’m trying to be supportive so... I skipped the intro 4:00 ad with whatever the second before your video ever started. I watched the first ad break. 5:30. I watched the first 4:00 of the second Manscape ad break but skipped the last :30 of the two ads in that breaku. Third was a 3:00 break with a :15 for NRA followed by a 2:45 Starscope ad so that means YT thinks a 13:00 video needs 16 total minutes of ads.

@@adamwiech4874 I’ve been asking myself “What’s the big deal?” 1/4-1/2” longer action? A few ounces of weight? At this point for a short action hunting rifle I’d choose 7mm-08 over 6.5 CM (already have 308). For a competitive target shooter 6.5 CM has a lot of advantages.

Slower bullets tend to do well in penetration tests on softer material and water, faster bullets do better in hard materials.

for accuracy I have found berger bullets usually out preform everything . ..but most hunters don't use them........

@@AlaskanBallistics Depends on where you're getting your factory ammo, but I don't disagree. There is huge misinformation about the safe pressure ranges of the mil-surp swedes but there are still modern rifles being produced in that caliber in Europe today and they don't downgrade their ammo for it. People throughout Scandinavia have been taking moose & caribou with the 6.5 Swedes for a hundred years.
I hand load, so it isn't an issue to me. It's the factory ammo that is under powered, not the cartridge.
The 6.5 creedmor has a case volume of 3.12
The 6.5 Swede has a case volume of 3.68... I can get five grains more powder in the Swede.
The .270 Win has a case volume of 4.34 by comparison so, still the king of the hill.

Alaskan Ballistics if I still had my 270 I wouldn’t waste my money on these new things and I would still take a 270 over them. Now I’m a 308 guy in a semi auto.
@@AlaskanBallistics the ballistics on the 6.8 are very nice. they worked with Browning so there will be a good amount of rifles to choose. its more powerful than a 7mm, 300 win and 338win with less recoil. and its a short action, just a super 270 i like it

Browning rifles absolutely suck at throat erosion. I had one that was awful. I'll never buy another. When i see a Remington, savage, tikka, bergara in that cartridge, I'll buy a 6.8 western. But the cartridge will die if only the sorry browning and new Winchesters are chambered for it.

Alot of people don't believe me when I tell them the 270 win is significantly more powerful than the 6.5 creed. Ballistically it's much closer to the PRC than it is the creedmoor. 500 foot pounds more energy is fairly significant. Hunting larger than deer sized game I take the 270 all day long. I know Chuck doesn't care for the ELDX bullets but I have had good luck with them on whitetail. My 270 pushes the 145 eldx at about 3050 from a 24 inch barrel with IMR 4831.

A big doe isn't a caribou or an elk. But hey I'm glad you're getting game with them lol

You are getting more than the box states. I was thinking about GMX or TTSX for my 270 win but since i do not reload may go for the GMX factory rounds. I have a 22" barrel also on a sauer so really optimistic about these as with that much velocity it would creep on being a 600yds bullet with minimum velocity of 2000fps

Ttsx opens up better than gmx at lower velocities, lrx is even better. I hunt with nothing but lrx with my 6.5x284 Norma and my 7mm Rem mag. Farthest kill with 7mm Rem Mag was 459 yards on a nice cow caribou.
@@AlaskanBallistics From memory GMX down to 2000fps , TTSX 1800fps and LRX 1600fps. Tough choice what to stick with as i hardly get over 400ish meters and if i get speeds like you in this test will be good enough to 500 yards.

The 270 has two problems 1. The 3006 is more versatile and 2. The 7mm Remington magnum and this is probably why its popularity is in steady decline. The 6.5 creedmoor seems to be a very fine deer rifle.

I have a random question, if you were hiking and were confronted by a large black bear ,and you have a Taurus judge on you for protection, do you choose a .45 LC Hornedy critical defence round,? or a .410 Winchester PD-XI triple disc and BB's?
I choose to sell the judge and get a better option. Two reasons...
1) Taurus still makes a horrible quality weapon. I'll never trust my life to their junk. Even a few months ago working the counter at cabelas we had several taurua judges that would fail to lock one you closed the cylinder. You could sit there and spin the cylinder for minutes until it locked. I've also seen cylinder advancement springs break.
2) the Taurus isn't strong enough to handle the hot 45 lc bear loads. You want the hot hardcast or copper solids for guaranteed penetration, they aren't whitetails, even all a small black bear you have to penetrate, they're really tough.
I'd want the solid slug round if I chose to carry it.
Sell that thing and get you a glock 40 10mm. You'll be glad you did.

If you have a 12ga or a deer rifle with a good bulletthat keeps it's weight. You're better off carrying that

@@AlaskanBallistics I have ran +P 45 LC critical defence loads ,and all types of .410 ammo through my Judge public defender, the stainless steel version, not the poly frame, and I have not had 1 malfunction, or failure to fire, my question was do you think that a +P 45 LC hollow point would be more lethal than a .410 Winchester PD-XI 3 disk and BB's load at close range? I have no dought that the pistol will function and cycle very reliably, you might of had a different answer if I owned a S+W governor instead of my Judge ,it's the ammo and it's effectivenes on a bear that I wanted your opinion on ! I love my Taurus, it has ran flawlessly for the last 2 years!
If you want to kill paper, the better BC of the 6.5 is your answer. If your out to bring home the bacon,take the 270.

This is exactly the fairest type of comparison between two cartridges. Definitely NOT apples to oranges comparison. When comparing cartridges one should ALWAYS do what you did here and compare the same brand and style of bullet and most importantly the similar SECTIONAL DENSITY and similar BC (as close as possible ). Sectional density in any style of bullet must be similar for it to be apples to apples. That is what you did. This used to be common knowledge but over the last dozen years this seems to be lost science. Well, not really, I think most people are ignoring SD and sometimes BC as well when comparing and pumping their favorite cartridge. SD of the 120 gr 6.5 GMX is .246. And SD of the 130 gr .270 GMX is .242. So they are very close to same. BCs are similar as well, the 6.5 at .450 and the .270 at .460. All too often nowadays you see the 6.5 Creedmoor using a 143 gr ELDX being compared with a .270 that is using a flat based lead tipped lower BC bullet from another brand that has very dissimilar sectional density and dissimilar BC all in order to “prove” the 6.5 Creedmoor to be superior…hog wash. You did good however. As apples to apples as it gets.

So what about at 1000 yards? Of course you probably can't do that without shooting a lot of ammo. But my question is what would you choose at 1000 yards 6.5 or 270?

The speed is enough faster that 6.5 really doesn't really catch up in drop to way past 1000 yards

@@AlaskanBallistics I shot the Winchester copper impact in both, One shot they drop, Whitetails in Georgia, This past deer season, 6 doe with the 6.5, 3 with the 270, I couldn’t say which one killed faster, Same result on all complete past through, Never found a bullet, The 6.5s kills were from 30 yards to 250 yards, 270 was 100 - 200 yards, I had a shoulder injury this past deer, Had to leave the big magnum calibers in the safe, First time I had my 270 out in 20 or so years, I think the magnums will miss a few deer seasons, I’m even pulling my old 243 wssm out, Haven’t shot it in years, I always say buy and shoot as many caliber’s as you can, Don’t limit yourself to one caliber.

It does have ammo available around here because it was popular with sheep hunters, but I've got plenty of handloads loaded up for it.

6.5 is definitely lighter on recoil. These .270s weren't that bad. All about what you get used to

The 270 has 60 percent more recoil ,everyone shoots far better with light kickers.As far as realistic hunting,not fantasy long range hunting on medium game either will do the same job.

A couple of Fleet Farms around me have the ammo (only rifle ammo on the shelf), but no rifles.
Imagine if the 6.5 Creedmoor had been around for decades, and then the 270 Winchester came along.... I think it would make the Creedmoor obsolete. I don't get the Creedmoor craze. Who wants to be shooting game at extreme long ranges with such a small caliber anyway? Madness.
It's for the m110/sr25 platform for long range engagements. Flatter shooting than .308 so for a long range ar10 platform it makes more sense. But as far as hunting game past 300 yards it's really a little light on power and requires good shot placement.

My beef with it is the extended range hunting with long range game bullet technology. Just get a bigger gun already if that is what people want to do lol. Respect the game....

Welcome to the effects of marketing. The 6.5 really isn't doing anything the 6.5 Swedish hasn't been doing since 1894 (128 years) and the 270 Winchester since 1925 (98 years). Marketing tries to convince you that you'll never kill anything unless your shooting the latest wonder cartridge or 404 Jeffrey based magnum.
Well it does everything the 6.5 by 55 Swede But with a smaller case capacity and a true short action Plus allows for the proper length of those long bullets. It knocks a caribou over quite effectively

A better test would have been 6.5 prc or a 6.5 rpm, You took the weakest 6.5 down in power and bullet weight against a long action, I Like the performance of both bullets, Do another test with one of the other 6.5s, Or do one with 270 against 3006, Both long action, My first bolt action rifle was a 270, I bought it in the mid 80s, Old Winchester still have it today, Haven’t shoot it in about 20 years, After seeing this video I’m going to try and find some of these bullets for it, Hell I haven’t seen any bullets on the shelves sense SLEEPY JOE STOLED THE ELECTION, To anyone that enjoy’s Hunting and Shooting don’t limit yourself to one gun or caliber , Buy as many caliber as you can enjoy them all, I DO. I don't have any .300 win mag videos. I don't own one and unfortunately there is no ammo on the shelf for them here anyway. I do have dies and some 165gr ttsx and casings powder and primers. I do plan on getting one or borrowing one If possible but finances are tight and there's at least a couple of other projects first. I hunt with a 7mm Rem Mag mostly and have plenty of videos on that. Also hunt bigger game with my .338 win mag

@@AlaskanBallistics that would be smoke’in for sure. Here in the U.P. Of Michigan where I’m hunting now my longest shot would be 200 yds and I’m zeroed at 150, and last year I hunted thick stuff with a 30-30 (no blood shot meat) A friend of mine hunts marshes and he uses what you do.

6.5 CM has less recoil. It has lower sound pressure. It has shorter case for short actions. It has better barrel life...than 270 Win. 6.5 is better for varmint and smaller deer species.
If you hunt for elk or moose, 270 will be small too. You want something stronger like 300WinMag or 9.3x62...

As with most of these new calibers....they've already been invented decades ago, and are often better. Nothing new in performance, just a new more sexy name, branding and packaging designed to sell guns and ammo.
Older calibers weren't designed to take long bullets with fast twist rates like these modern calibers are

i notice people are idiots, both consumers and store salesman. no clue what caliber and cartridge they are look at. saw a guy today asking what the 7mm-08 is. ask if it was the 7mm rem mag. the saleman goes it not the 7mm rem mag but uses a 7mm mag bullet. im like ok? not sure if they are clear the confusion or adding more to it.
