Still have a long way to go until the life I desire is seen to its absolute end, but I've made considerable progress mentally and circumstantially since I made my original comment. I ran across you by accident and decided to give your lecture a listen. I have always had trouble facing problems in life because I was/am to scared of the outcome...always putting things off instead of just facing my fears. But you are right... if I continue to cast a blind eye to the troubling aspects of my life they will go from being minor to a major issue. So I'm going to slay the dragon before it gets to big to control it! And I will most likely watch this lecture several times more when I deem it necessary to remind me why its important to face my problems and conquer! If it so happens that the dragon got to big. It helps if you cut it into pieces and slay those pieces one by one: ie if the problem is too big, devide it into smaller steps you can take more easily. And don't forget to rewards yourself when you have won a battle. Positive reinforcement! I treat myself to my favorite drink everytime I stook a step and I'm now somewhere between the goal I'm working towards and the chaos I came from by simply taking one step at a time. I hope you succeed in slaying your dragons!
Linda Irene Hi Linda. He is good isn't he - in the purist sense of the word 'good.' You would like (though I presume by now you've probably seen them) Peterson's lectures on the psychological analysis of the Biblical stories. Fascinating stuff. What he says on potentiality and moving forward towards a transcendent ideal seem to echo our current understanding of quantum field theory: the Universe requires consciousness as an integral feature of what we might call existential 'reality'. Even though - evidentially - nothing 'out there' actually 'exists' !
On one hand I'm thrilled that people like this exist who are both brilliant and compassionate, on the other hand I'm disappointed that it's so rare that a person like this gets the recognition and power to influence they deserve. Imagine this man being the thinking cap behind the political sphere in our times. Oh the places we'd go.

It's an evolution consideration. We have the instructions to act in a certain way ingrained in us even more deeply than consciousness. If the instructions were bad, all with the instinct to act them out would have died off and the instinct with them. But the instinct is still here - that proves it's an asset to survival and success in this world, not a detriment.
Another way to put it, I hope correctly, is that a conscious knowledge of our material reality is not sufficient to explain our behavior, our experiences, our nature and any meaningful purpose we might find within the world. The "world of objects" is a dead and incomplete reduction of reality.
my thoughts after just watching now, months after your question are as follows: people tend to write down into stories their wisdom and shared experiences in one form or another. otherwise you'd have a boring shopping list (and don't get me wrong, lists and data do exist in plenty) but a boring shopping list of data makes for a horrible story. so the lesson and shared wisdom in this children's book (and i presume written by an adult, correct me if i'm wrong) is to not ignore what a dragon represents, the unexpected. wisdom by it's very nature is knowledge through your own experiences rather than data gathered and transferred towards others. the moral and excitement of this story comes from gathering your own data, testing out your own limits, and to be very very very wary of ignoring the things you find yourself ignorant to.
For the first time in my life I had to pause a RUclips video just to have the time to reflect on what's being sad. The thought about combat with the unknown goes deep. That says something good about what RUclips is becoming thanks to the people like mr. Peterson. I'm glad.

It took me something like 8 years to figure out that there was a dragon disturbing my life. For eight years I had dreams about someone from (what I thought) was my past. Nightmares two or three times a week, sometimes more often. Anger became my daily routine, sadness too. I lived in a fear that I might meet that person one day. I was hiding and trying not to get any information about her. Eight long years. Then I came across JBP and once he stated: if there are memories longer than 18 months that still make you cry, you need to go back and slay the dragon. So I decided to meet her face to face. She agreed and we talked for five hours. Coming back home I felt relief and peace. Now it's way, way better. The dragon is gone, sadness, fear as well. If only I knew it long time ago my life would be much better.

I watched all these videos before going to work in Mexico city as an immigration attorney, shortly after graduation. I did not know it was so damn literal and did not get it at that time as I do now. I am in the middle of a fantastic but realistic journey and these videos and books related to such topics became a useful source. Thank you Mr. Peterson, you are a remarkable man of our time.
Mitch Wilkins Yeah. I've uncovered quite a few dragons on my own. I've realized that my materialistic way of life has been set up for me by my parents. Also, the problem I've been avoiding by staying at their house for so long: I stay for stability even though I'm miserable here. I can't ignore it any longer. My previous goals were based on going to college and getting a good paying career in something I am only mildly interested in. Now I am working towards moving out and adventuring, not going to live the way my father does, making himself miserable by doing all he can to get a big house to put more things in it and getting taken advantage of by his "good" job and his overrated work ethic (I think work ethic can be too much if it's fatally affecting your health). Or doing things like marrying a psycho bitch that you hate just so you can have the status of being married. I am trying to detach from those types of things. I'm trying to look closely at not only my own life, but those around me for the dragons. It is leading me in a good direction. I now feel like I have a mission and a purpose for living, at least more than "get good job, live comfortably". I honestly don't think that the good job would make me comfortable anyways. The chairs suck.
Found Jordans lectures yesterday and listened to them 2 hrs before bed, and then couldn't sleep all night with a horrible headache. It did however kill my dreaming phase and get me thinking about my future for the first time. The dragon story is just stupidly simple and oh so accurate.
This is, lowkey, his best lecture. Other lectures have millions of views, and deservedly so. But this one so concisely demonstrates his most important insights, that it should have 1 billion views. Part of the power of this lecture is that it's mediated using a children's story. The mark of a great story, is how much wisdom it contains. Peterson's commentary along the way, is just magnificent. I can go back to this lecture a hundred times.
I first watched this and all of his lectures in the fall of 2016. Now revisiting it I am even more convinced that people who think that Jordan Peterson is a problem are absolutely insane.

But then I remembered that when I was a kid, the mess was things exactly how I left them. I had a dream where everything was black except for an enormous nearly-black dark grey serpent that took up the entire sea. It was both in the sea and it was the sea. There was a small man made of light that was riding on the coils of the serpent successfully. The man was like Jesus but it was me also. Then years later I found Jordan's material and was able to interpret it.

This is such a great talk. I've been fishing around these videos for a while and have found them vastly interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed how the dragon tale was linked with each example in this video. Jordan Peterson is master of articulation and makes it so easy to understand these challenging concepts.
At around 54:20, Peterson talks about getting a piece of the dragon and using it for good purpose. my friend turned me onto your.... well, lectures and books and psychology... him knowing my fondness for the subject of life and mentality and it was probably to catch me as I fall through life, as he knows what it's like to fall. I listen, and absorb... but I process it too, to find what will save me. Sometimes, that does include falling. And it's comforting that as I feel and think these things, I don't feel bad about it.

You very beautiful to see how much you care about democratization of knoledge. That's something i will be forever grateful for. This lecture helped me a great deal conceptualizing how to work with clients who see themselves as fully conscious of their motivations. we need to resurrect the notion of the shadow and the dragon, chaos, etc. Your lectures assist so well with this. If we lose the idea we only see ourselves in part, we get a little too cocky - common in the materialist culture. Thanks so much! You are my lifeline right now - these lectures are reawakening old useful ideas that were once so foundational for me, but seem to have vanished from the culture in recent years.
Dr. Peterson I would suggest you look up the recent horror hit The Babadook. The reason that movie has been such a hit at such a primal level in so many audiences is because it was a horrifying retelling of the Billy and the Dragon story imo. You'd love it.
To think about the grind this guy put himself through back then with his career and family… So that in 2014-2017 people all over the world love him and his work.
I still have a vivid memory of a nightmare I used to have... I was about 5, of an actual dragon on this sort of circular island surrounded by cliffs with no where to go. I remember several weird nightmares, one with aliens, one with someone chasing me down. These all repeated enough to remember vividly. I'm 30 now, I haven't had a nightmare since I was probably 16. On a rare occasion I'll have a weird dream of zombies, or people trying to kill me except every time I'm calm and unafraid, or at least not thinking about the fear because I need to focus on survival and the task at hand, and I destroy whatever is trying to destroy me, even when completely out numbered. And I wake up refreshed lol, another night of kicking ass.
That's because you grew up and became dangerous yourself. People tend to confuse innocence with virtue, but _real_ virtue is having power and still choosing to make things better. We face our fears by internalizing them, to a certain extent - claiming a piece of the dragons we slay, so to speak.

Then open my Voice wide in Truth. I've lost a lot... like a snake or caterpillar loses... skin/shell/squirmy legs. But Truth is what I can build a Foundation upon. And I'm trying to do that. I struggle a lot with this. I have for a long time. I get so scared and feel overwhelmed when I think of all my "dragons". I have tried many different routes to change, and I have periods of change and hope, but right now I'm just stuck, miserably in my own fear. I can think of solutions to a lot of them, but I just can't act them out most of the time. Today is one of those days. I know exactly what I need to be doing, but I can't get going. It all feels like im doing it for someone else. That someone is demanding this of me and that I just can't obey anymore.
This man, although so much more than a mere man, has given me belief beyond comprehension. Not through motivational words or speeches, but through the change in my perception of the world, brought on by his eloquent yet simple to understand method of questioning meaning and reality. It's like he's talking to me directly and that I can resonate with everything he is saying. Thank you so much from the deepest part of me. He's broken barriers in me that I thought were impenetrable, something my own Father wasn't able to, or didn't wish to accomplish. God bless.

I ran across you by accident and decided to give your lecture a listen. I have always had trouble facing problems in life because I was/am to scared of the outcome...always putting things off instead of just facing my fears. But you are right... if I continue to cast a blind eye to the troubling aspects of my life they will go from being minor to a major issue. So I'm going to slay the dragon before it gets to big to control it! And I will most likely watch this lecture several times more when I deem it necessary to remind me why its important to face my problems and conquer! If it so happens that the dragon got to big. It helps if you cut it into pieces and slay those pieces one by one: ie if the problem is too big, devide it into smaller steps you can take more easily. And don't forget to rewards yourself when you have won a battle. Positive reinforcement! I treat myself to my favorite drink everytime I stook a step and I'm now somewhere between the goal I'm working towards and the chaos I came from by simply taking one step at a time.

Linda Irene Hi Linda. He is good isn't he - in the purist sense of the word 'good.' You would like (though I presume by now you've probably seen them) Peterson's lectures on the psychological analysis of the Biblical stories. Fascinating stuff. What he says on potentiality and moving forward towards a transcendent ideal seem to echo our current understanding of quantum field theory: the Universe requires consciousness as an integral feature of what we might call existential 'reality'. Even though - evidentially - nothing 'out there' actually 'exists' !

It's an evolution consideration.
We have the instructions to act in a certain way ingrained in us even more deeply than consciousness. If the instructions were bad, all with the instinct to act them out would have died off and the instinct with them.
But the instinct is still here - that proves it's an asset to survival and success in this world, not a detriment.
Another way to put it, I hope correctly, is that a conscious knowledge of our material reality is not sufficient to explain our behavior, our experiences, our nature and any meaningful purpose we might find within the world. The "world of objects" is a dead and incomplete reduction of reality.
my thoughts after just watching now, months after your question are as follows: people tend to write down into stories their wisdom and shared experiences in one form or another. otherwise you'd have a boring shopping list (and don't get me wrong, lists and data do exist in plenty) but a boring shopping list of data makes for a horrible story. so the lesson and shared wisdom in this children's book (and i presume written by an adult, correct me if i'm wrong) is to not ignore what a dragon represents, the unexpected. wisdom by it's very nature is knowledge through your own experiences rather than data gathered and transferred towards others. the moral and excitement of this story comes from gathering your own data, testing out your own limits, and to be very very very wary of ignoring the things you find yourself ignorant to.
After listening to countless of his current lectures, I just stumbled onto this old gem. Classic Peterson.
And 18 years later, it's still a great lecture.
For the first time in my life I had to pause a RUclips video just to have the time to reflect on what's being sad. The thought about combat with the unknown goes deep. That says something good about what RUclips is becoming thanks to the people like mr. Peterson. I'm glad.

It took me something like 8 years to figure out that there was a dragon disturbing my life. For eight years I had dreams about someone from (what I thought) was my past. Nightmares two or three times a week, sometimes more often. Anger became my daily routine, sadness too. I lived in a fear that I might meet that person one day. I was hiding and trying not to get any information about her. Eight long years. Then I came across JBP and once he stated: if there are memories longer than 18 months that still make you cry, you need to go back and slay the dragon. So I decided to meet her face to face. She agreed and we talked for five hours. Coming back home I felt relief and peace. Now it's way, way better. The dragon is gone, sadness, fear as well. If only I knew it long time ago my life would be much better.

I watched all these videos before going to work in Mexico city as an immigration attorney, shortly after graduation. I did not know it was so damn literal and did not get it at that time as I do now. I am in the middle of a fantastic but realistic journey and these videos and books related to such topics became a useful source. Thank you Mr. Peterson, you are a remarkable man of our time.

Mitch Wilkins Yeah. I've uncovered quite a few dragons on my own. I've realized that my materialistic way of life has been set up for me by my parents. Also, the problem I've been avoiding by staying at their house for so long: I stay for stability even though I'm miserable here. I can't ignore it any longer. My previous goals were based on going to college and getting a good paying career in something I am only mildly interested in. Now I am working towards moving out and adventuring, not going to live the way my father does, making himself miserable by doing all he can to get a big house to put more things in it and getting taken advantage of by his "good" job and his overrated work ethic (I think work ethic can be too much if it's fatally affecting your health). Or doing things like marrying a psycho bitch that you hate just so you can have the status of being married. I am trying to detach from those types of things. I'm trying to look closely at not only my own life, but those around me for the dragons. It is leading me in a good direction. I now feel like I have a mission and a purpose for living, at least more than "get good job, live comfortably". I honestly don't think that the good job would make me comfortable anyways. The chairs suck.

Found Jordans lectures yesterday and listened to them 2 hrs before bed, and then couldn't sleep all night with a horrible headache. It did however kill my dreaming phase and get me thinking about my future for the first time. The dragon story is just stupidly simple and oh so accurate.
This is my favorite old lesson from Dr. Peterson. There is so much thought provoking knowledge here it’s worth not one, but many listens.
This is, lowkey, his best lecture. Other lectures have millions of views, and deservedly so. But this one so concisely demonstrates his most important insights, that it should have 1 billion views. Part of the power of this lecture is that it's mediated using a children's story. The mark of a great story, is how much wisdom it contains. Peterson's commentary along the way, is just magnificent. I can go back to this lecture a hundred times.
I first watched this and all of his lectures in the fall of 2016. Now revisiting it I am even more convinced that people who think that Jordan Peterson is a problem are absolutely insane.

When I thought about the statement, "Children don't like disorder, because their realm of competence is very limited," an instantaneous objection was: "But kids make messes all the time, and don't clean them up!"
But then I remembered that when I was a kid, the mess was things exactly how I left them. I remember being a little confused when my parents asked me to clean up the lego and the discarded clothes, "Where else would they go?" The mess was what I knew. It was its own sort of order.
I tried convincing my parents for years (especially the teenage years) that my room was organized chaos 🙂

Amazing to see how clear it is that back then Jordan was forming his theories and methods for the use of story telling in his applied practice so concretely. This video here really helps us understand why Jordan Peterson uses story as a natural means to transmit his knowledge into us
Jordan may just be the modern-day archetype of an educated man, for a genuine education should not be an academic exercise perse, but a venture with real-world implications for action.
He has been saying the same thing for almost 4 decades; we expect people who repeat themselves to be boring, but Jordan isn't human like the rest of us.

I had a dream once where there was a giant golden shimmering snake. Though it was beautiful it was mindless. Just raw power. In the dream, God showed up and said "if you don't learn how to work with the snake and use it, it will kill you" I shrugged it off as a nightmare but this lecture is making me think maybe there was something to it.

I had a dream where everything was black except for an enormous nearly-black dark grey serpent that took up the entire sea. It was both in the sea and it was the sea. There was a small man made of light that was riding on the coils of the serpent successfully. The man was like Jesus but it was me also. Then years later I found Jordan's material and was able to interpret it.
Everytime in a while I come here to watch and listen carefully tothis speech. Is my 5th time already, everytime is different and I learn something new, is incredible.

This is such a great talk. I've been fishing around these videos for a while and have found them vastly interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed how the dragon tale was linked with each example in this video. Jordan Peterson is master of articulation and makes it so easy to understand these challenging concepts.

my friend turned me onto your.... well, lectures and books and psychology... him knowing my fondness for the subject of life and mentality and it was probably to catch me as I fall through life, as he knows what it's like to fall.
I listen, and absorb... but I process it too, to find what will save me. Sometimes, that does include falling.
And it's comforting that as I feel and think these things, I don't feel bad about it.

I can easily identify with Billy. The difference is that Billy said it out loud: there is a dragon. I've never reached that point when I was a kid. Silence was the safest option for me and my siblings.

This one though actually had me laughing out loud in the workshop. What a brilliant way to get a point across. Who'd have thought philosophy could be so entertaining?

I want to meet Jordan Peterson one day. Reading his book and listening to his lectures changed the path of my life and quite possibly saved me from a mid life crisis by changing that path.
every time i hear you teaching, it's mind blowing, absolutely amazing. thanks for recordings all this lecture, i would never be able to access this quality of teaching because of my financial conditions and other factors. You very beautiful to see how much you care about democratization of knoledge.

This lecture helped me a great deal conceptualizing how to work with clients who see themselves as fully conscious of their motivations. we need to resurrect the notion of the shadow and the dragon, chaos, etc. Your lectures assist so well with this. If we lose the idea we only see ourselves in part, we get a little too cocky - common in the materialist culture. Thanks so much! You are my lifeline right now - these lectures are reawakening old useful ideas that were once so foundational for me, but seem to have vanished from the culture in recent years.

Dr. Peterson I would suggest you look up the recent horror hit The Babadook. The reason that movie has been such a hit at such a primal level in so many audiences is because it was a horrifying retelling of the Billy and the Dragon story imo. You'd love it.

The best lecture I've ever seen.
The first time I encountered this video I was glued. Watched the whole thing in my car. Incredible to this day.
I still have a vivid memory of a nightmare I used to have... I was about 5, of an actual dragon on this sort of circular island surrounded by cliffs with no where to go. I remember several weird nightmares, one with aliens, one with someone chasing me down. These all repeated enough to remember vividly. I'm 30 now, I haven't had a nightmare since I was probably 16. On a rare occasion I'll have a weird dream of zombies, or people trying to kill me except every time I'm calm and unafraid, or at least not thinking about the fear because I need to focus on survival and the task at hand, and I destroy whatever is trying to destroy me, even when completely out numbered. And I wake up refreshed lol, another night of kicking ass.
That's because you grew up and became dangerous yourself. People tend to confuse innocence with virtue, but _real_ virtue is having power and still choosing to make things better. We face our fears by internalizing them, to a certain extent - claiming a piece of the dragons we slay, so to speak.

Your teaching... another video... conveyed (roughly) "You're gonna get clobbered by life anyway, with it's ups and downs (Tragedy tainted with malevolence, you say), might as well Tell The Truth because Truth is the highest mode of living."
That broke me right open. In profoundly terrifying and courageous ways. I began to shake and tell the (shh) truth. Then blink and tell truth. Then hold my head up to truth. Then open my Voice wide in Truth.
I've lost a lot... like a snake or caterpillar loses... skin/shell/squirmy legs.
But Truth is what I can build a Foundation upon. And I'm trying to do that.

I struggle a lot with this. I have for a long time. I get so scared and feel overwhelmed when I think of all my "dragons". I have tried many different routes to change, and I have periods of change and hope, but right now I'm just stuck, miserably in my own fear. I can think of solutions to a lot of them, but I just can't act them out most of the time. Today is one of those days. I know exactly what I need to be doing, but I can't get going. It all feels like im doing it for someone else. That someone is demanding this of me and that I just can't obey anymore.
