The Metal Roofing Channel I have an off-topic question... (forgive me if you've done a video on this already, I haven't found it yet) but what is the best underlayment for a standing seam metal roof? I have gotten my first estimate from a roofer and he wrote the estimate to include 30lb felt. My impression is that this is an outdated and inferior choice. I think it should be some kind of more sophisticated poly membrane. When I asked the roofer about this he was like "Oh no, no one does that, everyone uses felt." I'm curious what your guys' opinion is on this. (?) And btw, I have appreciated your informative video series very much! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Hey there! While 30# felt has historically been the product choice for roofers doing steep slope roofing, the industry has dramatically changed over the last couple of decades. It is proven that synthetic underlayments resist moisture better than 30# felt, they have a longer service life, they last longer exposed to UV, and generally most have some sort of product warranty guaranteeing the performance of the product under a specific type of roofing, be it metal, asphalt shingle, tile, etc. When you are using a product that lasts as long as metal roofing it is important to use components/accessories that will last just as long.
We recommend Sharkskin high temp synthetic underlayment products with our warrantied installations in part because of their proven performance, warranty offered on their products and the walk-ability of the product for the installing contractor. They also offer a fully adhered high temp underlayment which is recommended to be used at valleys, eaves, ridges, and around penetrations as well as any areas below a 3/12 pitch. I hope this answers your question, and we have some videos on underlayment in the works as well. I very much appreciate the support! -Thad

@@TheMetalRoofingChannel Thanks, Thad! That's exactly the answer I was looking for. So, just to confirm then, the typical metal roof system should just include the plywood decking, the Sharkskin, and then the metal roof panels on top. Is that all that is needed? Or is there another layer I should be considering? I live in South Florida if that makes a difference. No snow, high temps, high humidity. Oh, and a second question: My roof is a 6/12 pitch with a 12'x36' flat roof on the rear porch. Is there a low slope/zero slope metal roof panel product you can recommend for the flat porch roof, or should I just stick with the typical tar and asphalt rolls on that section? Thanks! - Joy

The system you're describing is a typical residential roof assembly. There are no other ”layers” needed. Also, we don’t recommend metal roofing on areas with no pitch and a flat roofing product would be the best bet when dealing with that scenario. Good luck with your project! -Thad

You would think a roof would be white to reduce heat absorption from the sun. Not sure why they don't talk about this. This would save cooling costs greatly in the summer especially in hot areas. I just read about it. It will keep your house cooler in the summer but if everyone did it, then it would heat the atmosphere, less clouds hotter summers. I probably wouldn't go completely white because even a lighter color would make a lot of difference. I think I would do a light blue. I definitely wouldn't go black as I see a lot of roofs are very dark. There are augments as well that all these black roofs and black asphalt are keeping a lot of heat on the ground in the cities heating them up especially over night. Every been out around a city and its cool, then you go into one and its a lot hotter? I've definitely noticed this. The problem goes both ways. Cities are a lot hotter than the surrounding environment.

Many different colors have excellent solar reflectance and emissivity properties. If you want to learn more about cool roofing and the paint systems involved, check out this video: bit.ly/cool-roofing-SRI-reflectance-video -Thad

I guess the guys that made this video cant respond !? -
      SOLAR REFLECTANCE INDEX (SRI):
SRI measures the roof's ability to reject solar heat, defined such that a standard black (reflectance 0.05, emittance 0.90) is 0 and a standard white (reflectance 0.80, emittance 0.90) is 100.
