Thank you for telling the story of slavery in Humboldt. The girl "Kitty" that you mention near the end was my ancestor. I've known her history my entire life, but I appreciate the efforts to get the story out to the public.
+CoastN8tv I'm in contact with another of your relatives. And may have info that you'd like to have. If you're interested, email me at historyaddicts@gmail.com
Good presentation Lynette. Im a pomo native of the Manchester/Pt Arena Band Of Pomo Indians( "Bo'kéya") & our ancestral lands were effected by the gold rush too. The redwoods were cut down to provide lumber to build san Francisco. And Rafeal Garcia(Spaniard invader) built a ranch next to our prime gathering grounds & enslaved women & children. And logging folks were just squatting on the land then pretty much settled here. The truth needs to be told!!
+Isaac Rios Thank you for this. I am afraid I haven't checked the video comments in a long time but especially appreciate your feedback. I recently completed an article for our local weekly that covers a differnt piece the same ugly history-that needs to be told www.northcoastjournal.com/humboldt/murder-in-arcata/Content?oid=3329526
It was a very sad but true history you talked about. I'm happy to see someone speaking the truth about the indigenous people. I wish they would teach the truth in schools. The truth needs to be told. Thank you for doing so. May the CREATOR BLESS YOU.
Sadly, the truth of slavery in this country has been undermined and understated!!! The whites wanted to rule this land by any means necessary and that’s exactly what they did!!!!
I came across this video doing research on slavery in California. We live in a historic home in the gold rush area for almost 3 years. My daughter claims to have seen a black or very dark female ghost with red eyes in our home on Saturday wearing a torn dress. She covered her face up in fear and the ghost went into the closet. Later she claims to have seen a small green ghost come out of the closet as it was a kid. My parents who just recently went back to Virginia told me they felt someone walking in the bedroom. I felt someone get into the bed after my wife got out. It has been a cool experience.
Great presentation. You seemed like you might cry a few times and I felt that in my heart. Thank you for teaching about this sad history. How can we ever make up for the sins of our ancestors?
Hello, I do apologize if I didn't make it clear that I believe the people that lived through/suffered this history are the ones who should be honored... Though I am confused as to why you think it amusing that I discount the political/social power of women during that time. History shows their influence was limited, unfortunately. Though we must also acknowledge that women (though not the primary drivers) did also feed the demand for domestic help and child servants...
Thank you ao much for this education. Of course, I was not taught this in school. We have much to learn and better understand our history. It is so helpful to more fully be informed. It is sad to see the level of humanity that we are plagued with. There is no rational reason for slavery of another human. Great presentation.
The Chinese were the ones who made the central valley the bread basket that it is today. If the Chinese exclusion act was never passed, the excess population of southwest China could have been brought here for labor and wages to remit back home to the families.

Thinking about what we are not taught - why is that? The colonizers get to tell it their way?
Of course, like the "winner" of a war gets to write history.

The fact that ONLY 19k people watched this just shows how much people are uninformed about history.
