Your title says "Macros" which are a series of recorded keystrokes. But all I saw in this video was how to program keyboard shortcuts for menu items - nothing about macros at all. I'm probably not the only one who would love to learn how to program macros. For example, I would love to be able to select a certain range of measures with the select tool, then press a single key and have it transpose that selection down an octave (keystroke 8) then add the 8va smart shape over the entire selection. Overall, a good tutorial, so thank you. Suggestion: if you can afford it, you might consider Camtasia to edit your videos between recording and posting. They give you a very easy way to add text callouts and such things as keyboard keys being pressed and highlight of your mouse cursor, etc.
Finale does Meta tools, but they're not very intuitive, and Finale's scripting often doesn't cover the simple things we all typically need to do.. The plugin referenced ini the video is nice, but may not cover your unique needs. For about the same price, use a Macro program and roll your own. I use Keyboard Maestro for Mac, and there are tons of Windows macro programs a google search away. I use combination of Meta Tools, Custom Maestro Macros, and Macros that nest the Meta Tools, and it's really helped my workflow (...and my repetitive stress). It may take you a few hours to setup, but you can tweak your macros as you go along. Then operations like you described above are dead easy. Best of all, rather than having to learn Finale's limited proprietary scripting language, any techniques you learn in the macro program, can be applied to other software you use.
I agree Finale's scripting leaves a lot to be desired. And I definitely will look into third-party macro programs. My fear with these programs is that they will conflict with other applications I use that have their own shortcut keystrokes. Adobe Creative Cloud apps, for example, have TONS of shortcut keystrokes, and I wouldn't want to lose access to those. Quite a dilemma. Thanks for the feedback.
Hey David- Most of the better macro programs allow you to create a command set that only applies when the target app is the active window, or open. Plus you can always use unusual trigger keys for said macro set. E.G. "control-tilde" or "shift-ctrl-tab". I feel your pain (literally..): I have to use Finale pretty much daily, along with my DAW, plus still beating my hands up playing piano for gigs & rehearsals for the last 40 years I considered one of those programable macro keyboards, and may still go that route. But in the meantime, the macro program helps. Best of luck! www.finalemusic.com/blog/quick-tips-from-jon-senge-creating-macros-for-finale/
The "Menu Shortcuts" isnt showing up under TG tools for me. I have v26 i think.
Since we can just click those Functions on the Tool Bar, why we need to use the Shortcut on the Keyboard? IT is almost same easy? Just ask. Thank you
