Years ago I made belts n wallets for my Dad n Brother. We are talking 40 years ago. My dad passed in 1999 he was buried with the belt n the wallet we found in my Moms stuff still full of dads things. I gave the wallet to my nephew the middle one. My brother gave his belt to the younger one. My brother wallet though bit the dust ten years ago when ten puppies from his Shepard knocked it off a table n proceeded to eat it lol. Nothing beats good leather if you care for it. It also tells me something about my Dad n Brother they really loved my gifts simple as they were my. Brothers belt n wallet were decorated in a scene of kangaroos cause at time I was obsessed with Australia. And my Dad's was an eagle in flight over the sun and fields and farms n city scape. I was lucky people teaching me had all the tools to create it. I got first n second place at craft fair for each set. But the fact my Dad n Brother loved them so much means more than the craft fair prize. They loved n cared for them now my nephew's do. Oh n the older nephew got the saddlebags I made for my bicycle. Lol he uses them on his motorcycle. Again they depict Australian outback scene. A sunset over the kangaroos.

I'm about to have my first try at leather work making a viking lamellar armour for myself. I'm kinda stressed to fuck it up knowing it costed me a lot for all the required material. I even failed in ordering the stamps not knowing I had to order the stamp separately... Rectified that today but damn, being a noob at this and trying an armour right from the start...
Your videos motivate me tho, maybe it'll become a real hobby for me, not that I think I'd ever match a pro.

So I've been painting the designs I've been tooling; I just dye the whole piece once I finish tooling and then paint over that, haven't had any problems (yet), but I never thought to leave the design un-dyed/painted, nor that you could brush the dye on, I might have to try that. As for antiquing, I just brush on a watered-down black paint and then almost immediately wipe it off, darkening some of the recesses of the design and leaving some of the black in the deeper crevices of the tooling, sometimes doing two or three applications, though not so much for the purpose of antiquing the piece but just to help make the intricate details of the design stand out a bit better rather than the painted parts looking brightly colored and plain in my opinion.
I thought that Resolene should always be applied in the end, after the Dying and the Antiquing... But this way it looks really awesome I will definitely try it out too and see the result myself! Thank you so much for the video!
Things are always evolving for me and I'm not sure if I put a coat on at the end. But I do now, I do the one before, then antique, then another one as a finish.

I love your work, very inspiring! I make knives and started making leather sheaths for the knives. The only tooling I've attempted so far is the basket weave, I'm very keen to try some carving, just one question, can you in fact design and make your own designs and transfer to leather, obviously a knife sheath only presents a fairly small area to work.I wonder if you might have some suggestions or could point me to some of your videos which may cover some of that content, Cheers

What's the difference between a resist and a finish?

I'm looking for a way to do the opposite, I've tooled in and etched a design that I want to color in silver, with the rest being dark blue. I can't paint that finely by hand, so is there a way to fill the design etch/tooling with silver paint then wipe off?

If I'm putting multiple dyes on one piece of my project, how much drying time needs to pass before top coating or finishing so the colors won't smear or bleed together?

I was just using a small paint spray gun.
Do you condition your leather before/after any dyeing? Or do you believe it isn't necessary?
Network!! Find someone to do cool pinstripe work on a piece. Airbrush your artwork. Upholstery restore you can add a design to the leather console or something. These fields have tons of followers.
So would the steps go; carving, tooling, dyeing, painting, sealing, antiquing?

Yes. I try and keep it light. Maybe 50/50 water neutral resolene I spray it on.
How do you get your dye so even? Mine have always been splotchy with a dauber and brush. Many thanks!
If you are able, a sponge, and quick application works well. Or a spray gun, or try wetting the leather evenly (not too much) first, then dye it. Also Fiebings Pro dyes tend to go on a bit more even.
Was curious if u always had a artistic flare and thats how u do carvings so easy or did u just learn to do it over the years with practice?
I was an ok artist but never really good. Knotwork is fairly easy and transferable to serpents simply enough. It takes me a very long time to draw things but practice practice.
When you are spraying the Angelus Matte Finisher, do you dilute it? If yes, by how much?
I just put it on straight.
Hey Magnus, question. I’m using Fiebing’s Antique Paste and EcoFlo Semi-Sheen for a finish. But when I apply the sheen, it makes all the colors muddy. Do you have a recommendation on how to keep my antiquing crisp, but still apply a finish?
I use acrylic resolene for my resist and finish
what about the belt?
Do you like the Angelus resist better than Resolene or Pro Resist by Fiebing? I use the both of those and it picks up the dye off the dyed leather, lightening or diluting the intensity, even after the dyed area has dried for several days. Have you found this to be a problem? does the use of an air gun to spray reduce this problem? Thanks, keep tooling and filming.
I change things up a lot. Usually defer to acrylic resolene.

Almost always dark brown antique. Dye is a variety.

A BSQ (bloody stupid question): The leather hardens as it dries, so how do you sew it? I want to make a carved leather belt pouch, but can't find info on how to sew up dried leather.

So you antique after applying a finish? I've been putting it on between dying and applying the finish. I've noticed the finish takes off some of the antique, giving it most of the look I want.
Leather carving is always resist then antique. Finishes are used as a "resist" and makes your work pop like crazy which is great.
Otherwise it ends up muddy.,

Should the leather be completely dry when you begin to dye or is it better to be somewhat damp?
Damp is fine, and some people prefer it for making colors more even. I tend not to think about it too much myself.

I've thought about it, not really leaping out of my seat to do so though. I like the solitude of teaching over the internet, not sure how well I'd do in a class setting.
Have seen videos recently showing that they are oiling the leather before dyeing / antiquing ...... is this necessary, better ?
I've seen some people doing this but haven't experimented with it.

I put a layer of Tan Kote on the leather. Put a liberal amount of Fiebings Antique Finish on.... let it sit for over 45 min.... and not much difference overall ?
With the realist on.... do I maybe just need to let it sit quite a bit longer ?
@@SteveHaysVids You resist, put on antique, wipe it away. But the point of this is for use with tooled leather, it gets in all the cracks and cuts. If it's just on a smooth peice of leather that's not the point.

In spray is resolene or tankote?
I've been using an Angelus Matte Finish in my work these days, but Ia've heard good things about Acrylic Resolene. Do a tester though.

Do you let the leather dry completely out or can it still be damp before you die it?
I am still experimenting after all these years with getting an even coat when painting with dyes. Lately I've been wetting it evenly and dying while wet for what "seems" like a more even coat.

I have yet to heard what a resist actually is and what is used. No one, anywhere I can find actually explains the resist and what it is and what it is all about. I am totally confused.
A resist is much like a finish and often. Is the same thing. It stops an antique stain from coloring your leather, which means it only goes into all the cracks of your carvings and makes them pop
Ok... I see you are dying the leather just as I do on most of my projects. BUT... are you using oil or alcohol type of dyes. The dark background I see looks like oil, am I right ?

You put your antique over your finish? Never seen that.
That's what you're supposed to do. The antique is to make your carving pop. You resist it then antique it to get that pop. Otherwise you're just making a muddy mess.
