Scores:
After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
88-92.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
93-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
96+ - The meaning of life.
Really found the new port and wine opens up substantially with time.
Nice, maybe the oak will mellow a little
Laphroaig Cairdeas is available one day a year at the BC Premium Spirits Release... I got mine and will open it in due course. At the store where I shop there was only one case of six bottles and I was #17 in line. I'm thrilled that the people ahead of me in line were going for Glenmorangie Cake (which sold out with the first few customers in line who waited all night to get in), and some bourbons and Irish whiskeys which left some Cairdeas for me!
That Glenmo' does not sound appetizing to me. Just calling it cake turns me right off of it!! I hope the LC or Alberta end up getting the Blue Spot soon :)
That cake bottle seems really gimmicky to me, still would like to try it though.
@@SippersSocialClub Exactly. Same here...
@@robinsharkey6658 What I'd like to find is the Red Spot...
@@foodquig it's damn good stuff, I'm still willing to bet the Blue Spot will be a shining star of the line ;)
Thanks for the review Jeremy, it really helps to bring out an older release for comparison - puts the new bottle into perspective (even if different fill levels). Love this format of review - short, concise and with all the info needed.
Thanks, cheers :)
This new Cairdeas is pretty easy to find in NorCal $84. I have not gotten it yet, the Laphroaig CS is a couple bucks cheaper and I love it. Also Ardbeg Uiegedal is only $67 near me and it's probably comparable. Solid review as always, Cheers!
Laphroaig CS for $80 is solid. Definitely would rather had that.
@@SippersSocialClub I actually scored 3 bottles of batch 011 for $194 tax included. That's like $65usd each out the door!
I skipped this year’s Cairdeas in protest of the BC Liquor price increase.
2011 $89.99
2012 $99.95
2013 N/A
2014 $99.95
2015 $99.99
2016 $89.99
2017 $99.99
2018 $94.99
2019 $99.99
2020 $184.99 😡
Bloody iniquitous!!!
my God! That's criminal
Whaaaaat. More than double!? I’m ashamed of my home province’s liquor store
Hey Jeremy, thanks for the review! I really liked this one. This was $170 + taxes in BC for the Spirit Release. The price hike is obnoxious and definitely feels like straight-up price gouging. For that reason, I didn’t buy a bottle.
Holy fuck, that's brutal. What was it last year, 100$??
100% not worth 170+
Great review!
Was available online at lcbo...for a total of maybe 10 minutes. Got 2. Could have taken 10. They limit Blanton's Special Reserve, but not a Limited Laphroaig release, known for being flipped mercilessly on the secondary. *sigh*
I lot of people missed out, another clown show performance by the LCBO
Much appreciate the review, Jeremy. Price increase encouraged me to pass this year. Your review confirms the decision. Kind of have to hunt for this babay, but my price went from US $79 in 2018 to $89 last year, and $119 for 2020. Tariffs may account for some of this, but I simply have too many fantastic bottles in the bunker.... Cheers, Sir!
I hear ya. The Cairdeas series is going from good value to over priced with each release
I actually discovered how much I love port aged whiskey by doing it myself with my home ageing barrel. I put some Taylor Fladgate in there for a few weeks and then aged some Forty Creek Barrel Select for a month right after. The port turned out delicious, but the whiskey, in addition to taking on a gorgeous ruby colour, was incredible. Such a good way to take a budget bottle and turn it into something special.
happy that worked out for ya! Cheers
@@SippersSocialClub I just rewatched your other review of the port wood Laphroaig, and, come to think of it, I'm actually pretty sure I got that idea from you, hahaha. I liked it so much that I have some more Taylor Fladgate in the barrel right now.
@@colina1330 I have a couple"how to" videos of the entire process :)
@@SippersSocialClub that's actually how I came across your channel. I got a home barrel as a gift from my dad and was researching different things I could do with it.
I actually have a question for you, though. I had my barrel sitting with just water in it for quite a while to store it, and I admittedly neglected it for a while. There was definitely some bacterial growth in there when I decided to use it again. I cleaned it out by letting it sit with a "Barrel Kleen" solution that came with it, and rinsing with a neutralizing solution. Am I risking too much by drinking the port that comes out of it? There are no weird odours coming off of it, so I think I might be ok. I'm not so concerned with the whiskey.
@@colina1330 hard to say. I'm not sure. The alcohol might be enough to neutralize it?
Hey I was just sitting in on a Feis Ile livestream with John Campbell from Laphroaig and he said that only the 10 year has colour. Anything at 48% and above is non-chill filtered and not coloured.....so I also suspect that "Select" has colour too but it also has 10 year in it right? I just got some more of this Port and Wine bottling and it isn't resonating with me. Kind of muted for sweetness but definitely peaty. I would still take the QC AND the 10 year over this. Cheers.
Have you had the Quarter Cask, mate? I didn’t hate Laphroaig 10 but didn’t love it either. Feel like I need to give them another shot and have heard good things about that one...
Nice review Jeremy. Do you gas your open whiskies after 6 months to a year or just accept the degradation of smell and taste as oxidation takes its toll? If so are you useing pure Argon ?
Gas and parafilm for bottles i plan on having open for over a year
@@SippersSocialClub Cool. So I assume your useing Pure 100% Argon? That's what Liquorhound (here on You Tube) is useing on his 2800+ bottle collection. I heard some of those wine preserver gas bottles are a mixture of Argon and Carbon Dioxide which according to some whisky fans gave their whisky an off flavor. Thanks for responding. Cheers!
@@gman5986 yes, 100% Argon
We have it in stock in Minneapolis at various independents and Total Wine.
Bottles just arrived in Saskatchewan....$92 + 15% tax
good price
Sounded delicious, but hard for me to drop the cash for the current release. Thanks!
Has anyone compared this one to the new LAPHROAIG CAIRDEAS 2021 PEDRO XIMENEZ CASK and how to they compare head to head?
this is listed on the LCBO website for 109.95. almost half of what I see it was selling for in Alberta?
The LCBO just spins a big wheel to decide pricing. They can be the lowest price on this, and charge $200+ for Ardbeg Corry. Makes no sense. With no limit on the online release, all those sold out pretty instantly at the LCBO
@@SippersSocialClub I know I must have checked at the right time because I managed to get a bottle.
I have really liked this one. It can’t hang with the 2013 portwood or even the 2015 Cairdeas. I heard from brand ambassador Simon Brooking awhile back on facebook that they used the same port casks from the 2013 in this. Hence the reused port casks. Cheers!
Really? That's cool
Is there anyway to just get notifications for whiskeys and scotches?
So if I review a rum you don't want to be notified?
@@SippersSocialClub exactly, I dont like rum I love your reviews on the whiskeys and scotches
@@brandongray1540 well, of the 180 videos I've uploaded 178 have been whisky. But to answer your question, no. No option for specific whisky-only content.
I hope mine opens up. It has been a disappointment so far... the toothpaste tasting note is interesting. There are a few notes on this I haven’t nailed down but that might be it. I think I’m around the 85/100 on this one.
Came & went in NB, unfortunately didn’t get my hands on one.
I missed the boat at ANBL as well
Unless it was going for $120 or less, you're not missing out
@@SippersSocialClub went for $119
Awesome content as always Jeremy! You ever get your hands on any Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength? I missed the batch 11 but tried 12 and it was so smooth for the 60%. If you find some, I’d love to open up a bottle of Batch 007 and 8 to send up a dram for review in the line up.
I have the 200th anniversary 10 yr CS. I think that was 2016 maybe? Batch 9 perhaps. Haven't cracked it yet.
@@SippersSocialClub The 200th is Batch 007! That’s thought to be the greatest, I drove a couple hours just to buy 2 bottles that had been forgotten on a shelf, back when Batch 10 was in heavy distribution.
@@SippersSocialClub A vertical tasting of the different batches would be epic though.
@@ConnahJay it would be amazing!
@@SippersSocialClub Well I have a dram of Batch 8 for you when you source the other bottles. 😉
Which one is your favorite Cairdeas?
I'd say the Port Wood and Madeira are my favorite
It's about $300 in Australia, so it's totally not worth it. Was pretty disappointed when I gave it a try.
Wow, thats crazy money
The port and wine cask is $184.99 in bcl...ridiculous...also plus 15% tax.
Haha! Wow. Are they selling any at that price?
@@SippersSocialClub i was at the release and people were picking it up. Thinking in my head at that time i was like...”y’all getting ripped off”. But i did pick up alberta premium cask strength and lot 40 dark oak for $69/each all in. Thats a good deal
Really love this edition😋
Took the spot 5 of all the Cairdeas👍🏻
