    As someone who started playing during the enternal format, it feels very strange that none of the decks are meta relevant as of now, and people are calling for the return of cards like Stallio and Engage, really shows how fondly this time is looked upon already. Great video too.

    This format is easily one of the best in the game, especially in its later days. Close to the end of the format, the big 4 were still the best, but t2 and rogue options were much more powerful, and all four of the decks were incredibly cheap. Plus, nothing else really operates on the same wavelength as these four decks did, other than maybe the pure combo iterations of thunder. Even then, I truly, truly miss the slow, grindy advantage play of striker, the combo control play of salad, and the recursive midranginess of orcust. This video is good stuff, and I’m incredibly excited to see more

    Really interesting to see the whole history of this format since I've started picking up the game again after the "slaughter" of a ban list that happend in Jan., where all the 4 decks got killed.

    Eternal Format holds an incredibly special place in my heart. I started playing in tournaments - locals, specifically - around September of 2018, my Freshman year of high school, after quickly meeting a group of people who enjoyed the hobby I loved most the same as me and being recommended to go to my current OTS. I went through it all: Gouki Rhongo combos with Soul Charge, Extra-Linking, and Gumblar, Sky Striker stealing my monsters with Widow Anchor every time I took a breath, Salad slowly outgrinding me, Orcust Normal Summoning Neo-Space Connector, Colossus telling me no, even Mystic Mine making me cry in the bathroom of a UDS when I realized Naturia Beast can't negate Metaverse. And yet, the amount I learned, the friends I made, and the decks I played during that time frame, all the way up until the banlist of January 2020, have solidified Eternal Format as the best format I've ever played in so far. Thank you for making this documentary. Eternal Format wasn't even that long ago, and yet it feels like a decade, one that I'll never forget.

    Salad was my reintroduction to yugioh. It will always be my favorite from this format and one of my favorite decks of all time for that reason. The nostalgia I feel for this era of yugioh. Up until COVID adamancipator and eldich was the peak of the game imo. MR4 might get a lot of hate but for me personally this was the best time to play yugioh

    I do gotta say, I did like this format. This was the time when I came back into the game back in august of 2019, and taking a 5 year break to see what the game transformed into was nothing but a literal shock. I did get why players were tired of these decks, but I will always hold this format in high regards as it’s the one that taught me how much the game truly changed.

    This is in my opinion the second best format of all time right after burning abyss shaddoll format. i'm an not only say that because lunalight orcust is one of my favorite decks of all time, especially because if you summon tiger king against thunder dragon and say "detach material activate effect" and answer the question "what dos that do" with "you lose", but also because playing rouge decks against striker, salamangreate or orcust felt so good. it's not that you get stomped out of the game turn 1 but actually got into a highly skill intensive grind game.

  • @collingarrison4467

    I think another factor that made this format so fun was not only how the big 4 checked each other but the rogue decks around also checked the top decks. Rogue decks of the format were strong such as guru, altergeist, pendulum, and the Feb 2019 version of lunalight.
    Also even though many decks used the orcust engine, they were all unique. Lunalight orcust would do their rank 4 spam and apollousa end board, cyber dragon had megafleet and infinity. Compared to now where decks try to put 2 monsters on field for verte into Dragoon and call it a "competitive rogue deck" . So boring.

    What I liked the most about this format was the final moments. Because Thunder Dragon and Orcust became more midrange deck than combo. Thus there was no deck which made you scoop turn 1 unless you have drawn powerful going second cards.

    • @sleepyygo
      @sleepyygo  3 года назад

      Theres an argument for this, thought personally I liked the format the most when rusty had been banned and it felt as if each deck was individually strong with good counterplay, the introduction of SS Orcust as a popular strategy shifted the balance at the end too heavily for it to be the best part of the format imo

    I think we’ve been in the Second Eternal Format since Secret Slayers/Duel Overload.
    2019 was the year of Budget and I really miss that, with so many decks that were viable at a fair price looking back as time went on, it showed Konami wanted players to have a better chance.
    Thennnnn we had 2020 happened and Budget Players were made practically non-existant again.

    • @sleepyygo
      @sleepyygo  3 года назад +2

      We’ve been in a rut since the secret slayers release imo, everything is very expensive, no real events to get people excited (remote duel ofc but thats much harder to get excited for at least imo), and to match the prices and the lul the best decks have been quite rough in terms of enjoyment to deal with imo. Hopefully we regain some momentum soon but the last few formats have all felt similar, and not in a great way

      @Nephalem2002 3 года назад

      @@sleepyygo I was a bit worried when Ignition Assault came out with Lightning storm but I was playing Shaddolls at the time so I was like; Okay so the formats not as budget but it still has a wide variety of budget decks to utilize. I had taken a break myself cause of personal reasons until May but I kept up with the game, and when Overload and Secret Slayers hit; I began to realize the game was becoming unaffordable again. Even as I tried to go back to Salad having fully completed the deck the powercreep was just too much.
      Shaddolls got even more pricey too with the Invoked Buyouts and continued Shortprints, The Dogmatica Engine, Schism...Etc.
      Granted we did get a deck like Virtual World but without TTT the deck wasn’t gonna see much success, ontop of it being the single hardest deck to pilot of the modern era.
      When The Lockdowns died down I went hunting for The Dragon Link stuff I would need as (surprisingly) it was the cheapest out of the top decks to build off what I owned, and Im still playing it to this day.

      @@Nephalem2002 it’s actually really funny I was in a very similar scenario. Up to the duel overload release I was mostly just playing lunalight because It was what I had until they finally decided to ban tiger in quarantine. So I mostly bounced around decks until I saw how easily I could build d-link a few formats ago and I just held onto the cards and kept playing the deck ^_^

This format was the first time I followed Yu-Gi-Oh competitively and it's interesting to see how many people remember this format fondly when I vividly remember people HATING Strikers' engage into engage, Thunder's big body floodgates with destruction protection, Orcust's "any two monsters is full combo" to play on both turns and Salamangreat's hand traps and crazy grind game. I guess I'm the only one who didn't like this format much 😂

    I loved this format. I was going to go to my first live event in December 2019. It was the PPG down in Vegas. I decided to go to my aunt's birthday instead. It was the last opportunity for me to go to a real event. I have literal thousands of cards and I plan selling.
    I am so tired of it all. With eldlich as my favorite deck and no in person events I just can't see myself playing anymore. I need to move on to something with life in it. Not even Master Duel has peaked my interest. I don't want to spend more money on the cards I already have. I WANT TO PLAY THE CARDS I HAVE.
