@@Error0101 well, it was actually only Number archetype monsters. And it was an effect, so negations would permit destruction from battle. And it was only battle destruction, so other effects could still destroy them. It was still dumb, but it was a mechanical decision for their plot importance.

All you have to do is activate "The Seal of Orichalcos" card. You will summon real monsters, but if you lose the duel or surrender you lose your soul. Fair trade-off imo.

5:45 I believe direct attacks weren't a part of the early manga/Duelist Kingdom rules. I think the concept was introduced in Battle City.
What’s funny is that in the original Japanese, they explicitly said so.
Removing an opponent’s monsters and attacking directly wasn’t an option in Duelist Kingdom. You must not have noticed - nobody ever attacked directly in that season. Your opponent had to have a monster or you couldn’t attack. Kaiba even pointed out how that was one of his new rules in Battle City - that you could attack directly if no monster blocked the way. Also, you could only attack with one monster per turn (another rule Kaiba apparently lifted), and though we never saw it onscreen, if you neither controlled nor summoned a monster during your turn, you automatically lost the duel - thus, the motive to summon monsters in defense mode and buy time, like Yugi did during most of his Exodia duel with Kaiba.
TL, DR: Duelist Kingdom rules were stupid, complex, and only worked because plot demanded it.
in the anime, Pegasus explains the no direct attack thing. I didn't notice anything saying only one monster per turn could attack, are you sure about that? I know most of the duels were slower, but when only one monster attacked wasn't it usually because of the no direct attacks thing?
Duelist Kingdom rules are wacky but they work. Check out Rata’s Kingdom Duels video. A guy made a Duelist Kingdom simulator in Tabletop Simulator and it works almost exactly like the Manga/Anime.

If I remember at one point during the Duelist Kingdom arc in both the manga and the anime they mentioned that they cannot attack directly.
This is actually pretty surprising to see something related to yugioh on your channel and how you have actual knowledge from the community.
one thing that was mentioned in the Duelist Kingdom arc that people seem to forget, as Weevil puts it, the tournament was supposed to have a different set of rules and different effects to reflect the crazy strategies everyone did through the arc. though it still doesn't cover how Yugi and Kaiba's first match still went with no tributes and all that

I thought this was about how you could avoid real life consequences through dueling. Going to fail a class? Duel your teacher. Scaping from the police on a motorcycle? The police better close all exits by challenging you to a card game on motorcycles.

There's a quote from the author that I remember about this very topic. this is the gist, "when you're watching a game be played, it's more fun for things to be unbalanced so that it is more impressive when the underdog wins. But when you're playing another person, it's the most fun when the two players are equal." In a way, he acknowledged that he was writing cards that were way too broken for actual play.

Duels would be too long with the story elements. Funny enough duels at take episodes to finish are really 2 minutes long by just playing theirs was no pause or talking.

there are many videos talking about the origin of the competitive game or the anime but it's very rare to find a video as well informed and in depht about the manga, great job!!! (also I assume those are panel from the japanese colored manga, they look awesome)
One thing you missed in the explanation of the no tribute problem is that early duel monster didn't have direct attacks
The weird thing is that it actually DID in the manga. It just never happened. Right before the final turn of Yugi and Kaiba's duel before Yugi drew the final piece of Exodia Yugi was thinking he was about to go to like negative 8000 lifepoints or something from a combined attack from Kaiba's 3 blue eyes, even though this shouldn't be possible even then.
In duelist kingdom there was one single mention that if you have no monster on the field during your turn and don't summon one, then your opponent is able to attack you directly on their turn.
I don't remember who was fighting who, though.
This would make sense as a balancing issue, since if your opponent has a stop defense type of card and a beatstick monster then you could just never summon until you had the means to counter attack.

In the manga/anime it seemed to function partially as a card game, and also as a tabletop RPG. Hence some of the out of left field rules (flying monsters, monsters that could hide in the ocean and not be attacked, monsters that could hide in the dark and not be attacked, machines block magic attacks etc), meanwhile in the card game, it's just that, a card game. No special unspoken rules or hidden abilities, it's just what's printed on the card and that's it.

Giant soldier of stone being able to attack the moon is what doesn't make sense. Being able to attack things that aren't monsters or your opponents life points is a concept that yugi pulled out of thin air. The game mechanics of duelist kingdom follow whatever logic that the characters want them to, regardless of the different field advantages. Another example is yugi attacking the flotation ring, or when his normal spellcaster monster (i forgot her name) started chanting a chant which lowered the attack of his opponents monster. Or when he fused a spellcard with a monster with polymerization to weaken the Blue Eyes Ultimate dragon

He definitely is the kind of person to say, well if you can justify it. It works. Just like when yugi destroyed the castle of dark illusions flotation ring. Cant attack a specific part of a monster but sure, they used b.s logic to justify it because of the tournament they're in. That's why I say that logic is specific to duelist kingdom. That doesnt happen in battle city or even the digital worlds

This is true for duelist kingdom not because of Pegasus liking wacky stuff, but because the author just didn't know how he wanted the game to go/didn't care. There was a part where yugi attacked during mokubas turn, and where weevil attacked three times, and another time when mokubas xards "wouldn't obey him" because he stole them . The author just made stuff up and didn't care about contradictions. That's what swakage is talking about

The reason season 1 is so different from battle city is that they were holding on to the season 0 version of yugi. The king of games who can solve any situation. When battle city started it, Yugi's character turned to nonsense. "Luck is a part of skill"... Basically, he draws exactly what he needs and thats it.
Back in the day, some board games use to have a card with an arrow that you can spin on it they could've done the same thing with time roulette.

I would love if you made more videos about YuGiOh! It's such an underrated anime and the dubs aren't helping at all. Arc-v had the worst rushed ending by far but it had one of the best starts to any anime outside of YuGiOh.

The coin makes sense for Time Wizard, but again, it could have been done by a 6-sided dice.

I think it's because at the very early stage of the card game, it's mainly targeted towards younger kids who watched the shows. The main demographics were children dueling during recess or in the backyard, so it was probably best to limit the necessary items to just a pair of decks and a piece of paper. Not to mention that younger kids aren't really adept in dealing with percentages, both as a probability and as an increment of something (20% ATK boost? Really?).
@@deproissant Yeah a lot of early Duel Monsters had D&D influence, so things could happen if you could adequately explain it in the game's lore/mechanics.
So the whole Yami Yugi vs PaniK duel makes sense of you think of it as an RP session with cards instead of player sheets or figurines.

8:40 you can calculate specific odds like 24% or 13% with two d10 dices. There are d10 that have 0, 1, 2...9 and others have 00, 10, 20...90 (zero being both 0 and 10 depending on the context, standard dices for D&D). So 35% chance of dodge would be: throw the two dices, if you get 30 and 5 you dodged the attack, get 20 and 8, you dodged the attack, get 30 and 6 you failed dodging the attack, and so on.
dice can be used to determine percentages. for instance, you can use 2 ten sided dice to simulate any whole-number % chance. (1 is the 10s digit, the other is the 1s)

8:50 It's actually really easy. Roll a twenty sided die, if it comes up 7 or less the monster dodges. Any multiple of 5% can be done with just a d20

In fact; Raigeki was in the anime as early as Battle City, albeit as a rare card supplied by the Ghouls (Rare Hunters in the dub) that was also banned in Kaiba's tournament.
