  • Learn how to kill weeds naturally without chemicals, vinegar, soap or salt (which can damage the soil) using our favorite method for around the vegetable garden, pathways, borders and driveways.
Learn how to burn weeds to keep the perimeter of the vegetable garden free of weeds, all organic, and I confess, it's pretty fun.
I share a few tips we've found helpful to make it the most effective at naturally killing weeds using a propane torch (aka flame thrower).

I have used flame weeding for many years. You don't need to burn the plants as much as you do in the video. You only need to heat the leaf cells enough to rupture them.

I've found that burning isn't always necessary, especially on leafy plants. I just cook the leaves in order to wilt. Less gas and safer.
As to drought conditions there's another way to look at it. Getting rid of weeds during dry conditions is important so they don't suck up moisture that the good plants need.

I live in SoCal and of course our houses are right next to each other. I pretty much got tired of weeding while my neighbors wouldn’t and their yard would just repopulate mine.
Basically I’m going to till my planter areas with a stirrup/action hoe. Rake all the weeds then burn the leftovers, roots and seeds. Since propane doesn’t cost that much I’m planning on tilling again and another once over with the weed burner.
As I’m writing this I can see into my neighbors yard and see the foxtail weeds are about 4’ tall. Hopefully this works.

Trick i use for safety is i do roto-tilling with just 2 sprokets along the outside that protects a fire spread. Gives me an open edge of free space and also stops some grass and other from coming in to my garden. Leaving this edge path free permits me to rotor-till few times a summer to stop weeds... just a little trick. Thanks for giving me advice with your video :) can i add a warning, we have a farming cornfield, like 100 acres, from a neighbor farmer surrounding 2 sides of our 5 acres. We will avoid burning when he will harvest his corn due to votality of corn powder present in the air... here is a cut and paste: Grain dust is highly combustible and can burn or explode if enough becomes airborne or accumulates on a surface and finds an ignition source (such as hot bearing, overheated motor, misaligned conveyor belt, welding, cutting, and brazing).

I am struggling with my weed issue. Mainly because all resources only recommend herbicides only.
I have a few that are poisonous or unattractive to our livestock, which I usually put on our plots at the end of the season through the winter to manure & pick through seeds etc.
But this year, I have a huge infestation of spiny amaranth, cucklebur, ragweed & morning glory. I was considering burning on a large scale (like a huge series of bonefires), but I don't know if that will make these seeds MORE viable vs killing them. I use this method for grasses, but it seems like noctious weeds are getting really terrible.
All I know is I must take care of this before it spreads over my entire farm and in the pastures.
    Any ideas?

As far as I understand you should also mention not to get the flame directly on your galvanized fencing if you have any as it will ruin it and it will start to rust. Correct me if I am wrong on this but this has kept me from using mine all these years however I think I am going to try it again as I have been reading more and more on the subject and it seems if you stay even a couple inches away from your galvanized fencing with your flame it is fine and apparently you don't even have to "burn" the grass but only hit it a few seconds over a few times (as you have shown) and it will die out. It is a great method. I actually have an lp adapter for mine to fit the 1 lb bottles and a belt clip holder for the bottles themselves to make it real easy to walk around.

    • @MelissaKNorris

    • @eruantion

    • @runningwater5936
      @runningwater5936 3 года назад

I like the fact that a herbicide or herbicides aren't used but the flame on galvanized fencing will help destroy the rust protective benefits of the galvanizing. See link at: galvanizeit.org/knowledgebase/article/galvanized-steel-s-performance-in-extreme-temperatures.

Just do not use on a plastic fence and be cautions around wood posts. Typically, the weeds are injured for about a month before coming back.
