    In Pax Pamir, players assume the role of nineteenth-century Afghan leaders attempting to forge a new state after the collapse of the Durrani Empire. Western histories often call this period "The Great Game" because of the role played by the Europeans who attempted to use central Asia as a theater for their own rivalries. In this game, those empires are viewed strictly from the perspective of the Afghans who sought to manipulate the interloping Ferengi (foreigners) for their own purposes.
    In terms of gameplay, Pax Pamir is a pretty straightforward tableau builder. Players spend most of their turns purchasing cards from a central market, then playing those cards in front of them in a single row called a court. Playing cards add units to the game's map and grants access to additional actions that can be taken to disrupt other players and influence the course of the game. That last point is worth emphasizing. Though everyone is building their own row of cards, the game offers many ways for players to interfere with each other directly and indirectly.
    To survive, players will organize into coalitions. Throughout the game, the dominance of the different coalitions will be evaluated by the players when a special card, called a "Dominance Check", is resolved. If a single coalition has a commanding lead during one of these checks, those players loyal to that coalition will receive victory points based on their influence in their coalition. However, if Afghanistan remains fragmented during one of these checks, players instead will receive victory points based on their personal power base.
    After each Dominance Check, victory is checked and the game will be partially reset, offering players a fresh attempt to realize their ambitions. The game ends when a single player is able to achieve a lead of four or more victory points or after the fourth and final Dominance Check is resolved.

    Lord Jess Quack Opened the door to the Russian Official's chamber.
    And saw said official having tea with the last two people Jess ever wanted to see.
    The official, oblivious to the massive rivalry he just invited into his court, greeted Jess warmly 'Ah! Mr. Quack, our good fortune is ever improving! Some of your close friends have decided to join us in our cause!"
    Jess took a deep breath, the smell in incense filled his nose, a sharp spice, though only half as sharp as the knife he wanted to insert into his two... 'friends'. Buying time to maintain his composure, he asks a servant to bring him some tea as well. as he waited for the tea, he probed the situation. "I haven't heard from you two in a while, how has your endeavors been? What brings you to the Russian court?" Though it was true he hadn't been on speaking terms with the two, he had spies to tell him exactly what they have been up to. Still he needed to know what lies they fed the Russian, it would do none of them any good if he found out that he was a mere pawn in their ambitions.
    The two gave different reasons, but it boiled down the same: they each told the Russian that they were in alliance with Jess (news to him) but didn't have the manpower to aid him (because they were using that manpower to side with the British). Now that the Russians were more established (because Jess spent most of his resources to make it so) they were more than happy to join the cause (betray the British for being useless).
    As they masterfully presented their lies, Jess's eye began to twitch. He knew the Russian was a moron, that's why Jess picked him as his pawn, but it never occurred to him how much of a gullible moron the Russian was. Nor did he factor in how much of a double edged sword it would turn out to be. He took another breath to calm himself, but the incense was infuriatingly sharp, rather than calm him down it made him more emotional more... incensed! Why did this always happen! Everywhere he goes these two are somehow in front of him or close behind! Everything was going fine until... until-!
    Luckily at that moment, the servant arrived with his tea. Jess sipped at it, slowly regaining his composure. An outburst would cause far more problems. The last thing he needs is problems, he already has two, no three!, problems staring at him, making small talk. The Russian believed those two, and Jess would need to find ways to keep them out of that moron's good graces. For now, all he could do was sip his tea, nod, and hide his unyielding rage as best he could.
    There would be time for schemes later...

    I liked the B-roll whenever someone bought a card, made it much easier to follow the action.

    But a positive comment: not only is it wonderful you've given people a playthrough of this sweet game, but I also think it's wonderful this particular video is of a mixed demographic of players. I'm used to seeing mainly young dudes in playthroughs --- and that's no comment about this channel! -- but the community is more varied than this, which shows in this video & makes it valuable in this sense of representation. It's great! Thank you!

    Need clarifications about the mistake @ 1:10. It's true, you can't Battle tribes of players sharing your loyalty (but you *can* Battle their spies)...However, there's another important mistake: *you can only use the # of ranks per unit you have in that space.* Think, sorta like using rolled hits in Root. So, for a *2-rank* Battle action, you need *2* armies to use up both in the same region. Jesse only has 1 army, so he may only use 1 of those 2 ranks. Furthermore & finally, *tribes don't Battle!* (There is one exception: a certain Event card called "Nationalism," which explicitly states that if Purchased, your tribes can now Battle & March like armies until the next Check.)

    It seems this game is hard to play errorless. Even for experienced players. 36:30 - he can't take control of Punjab because he has only 1 tribe and 1 enemy army is present. And before that blue player didn't rule transcaspia (when she was Britain). 58:15 Black player doesn't take bribes not because of event cards but because he doesn't rule Kabul. 59:05 money goes on rightmost cards not in the bank. 1:10:00 - No, he can't kill two tribes with one army even if the card with war action has rank 2. Also another rule was broken - you can kill the tribe of the same coalition as yours on the board.
    Also people often forget about free actions.

    Great stream, it really shows off why the game is so popular. Jessie is good at this game.
    A couple of quick rules clarification. That last battle that Jessie waged would have gone down a little differently. First, even though he had a Rank 2 Battle action, you are always limited by the number of armies you have in the region (or spies on a card if that's where your battling). So he would only be able to remove 1 piece because he was battling with 1 Army, this is similar to the rule in Root about how many pieces you can remove in battle. He also would not be able to remove Phillip's tribe since Phillip was the same loyalty as Jessie. Protecting your tribes is a good reason to align yourself with the same loyalty as another player, especially if they have battle actions available.
    The second rule issue never came up in this game, but was described incorrectly. At 4:53 having dominance is described as when one faction has 4 more blocks on the board than any other faction, but dominance occurs when one faction has four more blocks than each other action. So the video b-roll that plays while this rule is described does not show a successful dominance check. There was another time this was described incorrectly, but not trying to scan through the video for a timestamp :D Even though the video was pretty good.
    Keep up the good work! You should definitely stream John Company.

    Hey guys, great playthrough! Agreed with other comments as this was well done, not only production of the play but also the music was really nice.
    Hate to be that guy but you guys got a rule wrong...
    You should not have been able to remove the tribes of a player with the same loyalty:
    Rulebook pg 14 - Battle
    "...You cannot remove tribes belonging to players that share your loyalty, however, their spies may be removed"
    Feels like another theme win here as you can't outright attack your allies on the battlefield but behind the doors political intrigue and backstabbing is perfectly fine :D

    You guys mentioned that one of the cards was of a fictional character but couldn't remember which one it was, the only fictional character in the game is Flashman based on the books by George MacDonald Fraser(originally the character was a school bully from Thomas Hughes book "Tom Browns School Days" and later Fraser, wondering just where the character might have ended up after school finished wrote 12 books showing his adventures across the Victorian age of the British Empire wherein he was a total cad to everyone). It was the card played at 18:10 .

    O.M.G. !!! I just discovered that GiochiX.it has started a crowdfunding campaign to bring the reprint of Pax Pamir completely translated to Italian 😍😍 I was already going to back the reprint on KickStarter, but this is just icing on a cake. I’m all into it. I have zero issues in playing games in English (I even have the full 7th Continent content in French, ‘t was the only language I was able to find all the expansions and the core game), but having the chance to play it in my own language is definitely a plus I usually don’t skip, if I don’t have to wait for 2+ years for the translation.

    During clean up. When the market cards go down the coins dont move.
    Gifts and prizes give influence.. so even if you brought in a rival pariot to your court and had e.g 2 prizes you wouldnt change allegence.

  • @akwatimba3412

    You didn't play the ruling region rule correctly, to rule a region you need at least one tribe and a plurality of ruling piece (ie more than one of tribes, soldiers or a combination) which was not the case in transcaspia or punjab.

    • @akwatimba3412
      @akwatimba3412 4 года назад

      you also require the most ruling pieces in the region (so in the case of punjab he shouldn't have had it because (a) he only had one tribe and (b) russia had an army so the afghan tribe in black would not have the majority needed to rule)

    at 52:55 if you switch from Afghan to Russian, why don't you loose the ruler of Kabul aswell? The Afghan armies aren't supporting anymore in Kabul: you now have two tribes, zero army and the Afghans have four armies so the Afghans have the majority?

      It's great with 2 players! People like to also add Wakhan, the AI, in 2 players, but I personally prefer the 1-on-1 duel without Wakhan (although I do love to solo against Wakhan). Obviously, both players need to be about even in skill/experience, or at least good understanding, like chess -- but fortunately, unlike chess, there is enough randomness in the market that victory even for a highly skilled/experienced player is not guaranteed!

    • @jecosci
      @jecosci 4 года назад

      @@malexander4094 , thanks. I read a review saying it ends abruptly under 15 mins with 2 players. Can you find truth to that statement?

    • @malexander4094
      @malexander4094 4 года назад +1

      @@jecosci It can end "abruptly" in the sense that the end gets triggered (if a 2nd Check card ever enters at the same time there's already a Check card somewhere in the market, as it did at the end of this Quackalope game). This can happen at any player count, & is not totally unpredictable: players have much control over determining/preparing their position for that immanent moment.
      Of course, in 2p it can sometimes be possible for this moment to happen more quickly, because there are only 2 players. Thus, until they get more experience, beginners don't know how to best position themselves for it, & may go through initially swingy or apparently abrupt games. Another thing is, players who are uneven in skill might initially experience "accidental" wins or losses, until they understand more in the game. A nice thing is, the game can be reset in just a few minutes. So, it's easy & fast to play a rematch, & get more experienced!
