    This is brilliant - the best playthrough I've seen of a board game (and I've seen a few)! I particularly like how you explained not just your thought process, but also the rules and priority choices at each and every step throughout the game, and didn't just assume that if you'd explained a rule previously, the viewer will have remembered it. That made the gameplay so easy to follow.
    I had been umming and ahhing about buying Pax Pamir purely because of the cost (after import taxes and delivery over $100 here in the UK), but seeing this video convinced me to take the plunge anyway and order it! Hope you make many more playthrough videos!

    Easily one of the best playthroughs I have ever seen. Learning Wakhan has been a incredibly frustrating experience for me but now I see what the problem was. Great video, and great video series! Your instruction, explanations, and description of your thought process are so clear and easy to listen to, and the presentation and editing are fantastic! I’ve recommended your videos to all of my friends, as I try to get them on board with Pax Pamir 2E.
    Strategic note: there were a bunch of times during this playthrough where, if you had pivoted from an Afghan dominance strategy to an unsuccessful dominance strategy, you could potentially have won sooner. There were a number of turns where you could have afforded to place a cylinder, remove a Wakhan cylinder, and purchase the Dominance card, in order to break the tie and secure the 2-point differential. The majority of my games against the Wakhan are a 6-2 victory after two unsuccessful dominance checks (although I’ve had a bunch of games go to a third or even fourth dominance check at times). My rubric for attacking the Wakhan is to keep her poor, keep her off of political cards, keep her from ruling regions (goes with the previous tip), and to pay slightly more attention to cylinders than blocks.
    Do you have any plans to follow this video up with a strategy video? Keep up the good work!

    • @ModernTablegamer
      @ModernTablegamer  3 года назад

      Thanks so much Saif and thanks for the strategy tips. I like your advice to focus on cylinders rather than blocks and will make that my focus next time I play the Wakhan. It's not impossible that I make a strategy video sometime in the future, but for now rules and gameplay is my primary focus. Thanks so much again!

    Super playthrough. One thing you missed, at 1:36:48 you discarded Wakhan down to 5 cards, but as it goes she had 3 political stars, so didn't have to discard the Eurpean Cannons. A nice card to lose, as those 3 stars could have made a difference. In the end it didn't matter: the dominance was superbly won with the political battles. Nicely done ;)

    • @ModernTablegamer
      @ModernTablegamer  3 года назад

      Yeah, I missed that there were three stars in her court on that one. I'll blame that on an end game miss. I'm glad in this case it didn't appear to have affected the result though. If it had, I would have to put a big asterisk next to this victory ;). I thank you so much for your input. It's funny that sometimes you look at rules, re-read rules, check BGG forums and even review a couple other videos to make sure you're showing the game correctly, but you always fear you play a rule incorrectly or mis-interpret a rule. So thanks for your expert validation on this one and keep on creating those great solo variants! I don't think I would have taken to this game as much as I have without it.

    Very helpful video (certainly way more helpful than that rulebook). How do you manage to keep from bumping those cylinders off the player mats constantly when you sit in front of yours in a multi-player game (or have you not tried that)? It's not Terraforming Mars in that respect, but it's annoying how easy it is to brush them right off.

      Wakhan doesn’t need roads to move armies 🤔
      She could move and wouldn’t lose rule in Punjab since she doesn’t use her pragmatic coalition to rule. She considers dominant pieces the armies of the single most numerous color (in that case British, but it could be any since she’s the only one with a tribe there)

    I am watching your video to learn how to play against the Wakhan. It is helping me quite a lot. I do have a question around the 17:43 mark after she chooses not to buy the first Dominance card. At this point you refer back to the actions on her AI card. Is that right? I expected her to look to purchase an Afghan Patriot card from the market, and failing that the cheapest card with Armies and/or Roads. Thanks!

    • @ModernTablegamer
      @ModernTablegamer  3 года назад +1

      Hi Scott, When there is a dominance card in the market, the Wakhan will buy it if it meets the criteria and if she has enough rupees as an automatic reaction that is not on her Wakhan card. If she doesn't have enough rupees or she does not have the advantage, then she passes on buying this card and starts going down the list on her Wakhan card. Then if she has the radicalize action, she will follow her logic tree depending on if she is going for blocks or cylinders. I'm going off of memory on this one, so hopefully that makes sense. Thanks so much!

    At 17:00, when the dominance card is out, you still go through the Wakhans action tree? I thought it automatically goes for the altered radicalize actions (radicalizing a patriot of the dominant coalition, etc) to maximize it's benefit from when the dominance check card in the market triggers. Does it only do that altered radicalize action when it hits the 'radicalize' action on it's action tree? If so, I played really wrong and made it easy harder on myself lol

    Thank you for this very nice explanation! I have one question though, at around 44 before the dominance check, wakhan loses the two political cards, isn’t she then also over her court size? (4 cards and no purple stars...)

    • @ModernTablegamer
      @ModernTablegamer  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Snuckyfication for the comment! The timing of the clean up phase made it legal for the Wakhan to have 4 cards in her court without at least one purple star. She already went through step one of the clean up phase which reduced the size of the Wakhan's court and I believe she had 3 purple stars at the time so she could still have 6 cards in her court. During the 3rd step of clean up there was an event card in the "0" cost column that was resolved that removed the two tribes of the Wakhan's in Punjab and this also removed the two political Punjab cards the Wakhan had in her court, but since she already went through court clean up, this wouldn't affect her court until her next clean up phase. Hopefully that makes sense.

    I'm curious about 26:00 where you claim that Wakhan's pragmatic loyalty overrides the color of blocks given on the patriot card. How did you arrive at that conclusion? My understanding is that Wakhan's pragmatic loyalty only determines the color of blocks placed for neutral cards, but for patriots, she still has to play blocks in the color of the patriot. Unfortunately, the rules do not seem to make this clear, is there an errata or something out there that I'm unaware of? Thanks for clearing this up!

    Hello. In turn 3 you play action from the Wakhan card, but the dominance card is in the market. The instruction says:
    If there is a Dominance Check in the Market: Wakhan only purchases a Dominance
    Check event card if she will score the most points from the check (and/or wins). However, when a Dominance Check is in the market, Wakhan will choose the cheapest Patriot loyal to the dominant coalition, then the cheapest card with the most Army and/or
    Road impact icons, or, if no coalition is dominant, she will choose the cheapest card with
    the most spy and/or tribe impact icons. If there is a tie, use the highest card number.
    Is this a bug?
