  • Greg Duley from NZ Hunter is here for Hunting & Fishing NZ “Tip of the Trip” and helps us to decide in choosing the right factory ammunition. It is one of the most important links in the chain that leads to a successful hunt. With the money you outlay for all the other things like food travel and equipment skimping on factory ammunition selection is a real false economy.
The first thing you need to decide is the style of hunting you're going to be doing, is it up close and personal in the bush with higher impact velocities, is it going to be out on the open tops at longer ranges with much lower impact velocities, are you targeting larger animals like Wapiti and Bull Tahr with more solid bone structures, or lighter animals like Chamois and Fallow?
On large animals up close you need a controlled expansion or monolithic projectile that will still punch right through even at high impact velocities.
At longer range you need a high ballistic coefficient that bucks the wind and shoots flat to hit the animal in the first place, and then you need a more lightly constructed projectile that still expands at the lower impact velocities. Potentially doing a bit of both on the same hunt then you're going to need to choose a compromised load.
Hornady for example has a wide selection of lines for specific purposes. One of our favourites is Hornady’s Precision Hunter line which uses either the patented ELD-X or ELD-M projectile. Both have a polymer tipped very high ballistic coefficient projectile and the ELD-X has a controlled expansion interlock feature, while ideal at longer ranges this allows it to hold together reasonably well at close range as well.
For closer ranges they have their monolithic GMX projectile, which is loaded into the Full Bore or some of their Superformance lines. Another jack of all trades is Hornady’s SST which is available in their super performance and custom lines. If you're really on a budget and don't need something too specific, you can try something from their American Whitetail line.
Check out the full range of Hornady ammunition at you local Hunting & Fishing NZ store and find the ones that are going to work best for you.
