Vietnamese and the Chinese dresses are so extravagant and pretty. They look like fairies! Ao Dai is gorgeous too but I feel like it’s a lot more casual and simple. Simplicity is beautiful but it’s fun to have layers of design and extravagancy sometimes.
    1. Chinese
    2. Vietnamese (clearly biased)

No matter how people give ranking of these 4 nations, the truth in reality is, Vietnamese women wear their costumes for daily use. Many Japanese women in certain jobs wear Kimono everyday and people wear Ukata very often in many national or local matsuries. Most Korean women wear Hanbok once a year in the new year or in wedding. I have not seen any Chinese women actually wearing Hanfu in real life yet except in movies. Ching Dynasty costumes are shown in many restaurants.

I love all of them so much! I'm a Vietnamese, and I know all the tension between China and Vietnam but I think not many actually know that Vietnamese people adore Chinese culture a lot!
I love Hanfu! They have always looked so elegant and feminine, delicately beautiful.
I have admired Japanese culture ever since I was 7, there was a period where I was obsessed with everything Japanese related and even took up Japanese courses. Kimonos have always looked so majestic to me, proud and impactful.
Hanbok has always fascinated me in some ways, though I must admit my tastes doesn't align with it as much, I still adore the dignified design and the youthful colour palettes.
As for Ao dai, I love how versatile and agile it is. Accentuating the curves and flows of of the body while keeping it simple but graceful. I like to think it speaks of our history too. We are a nation who has struggled throughout our entire history and could afford little luxury, but we still hang on and never stopped fighting. It is modest and straightforward, it is among the virtues Vietnamese people hold the highest.

You did a good job, but criticisms:
    1. In the Vietnam section, the one without the pants is sexualized Qipao. It doesn't represent Vietnam at all.2 You showed no Ao Tu Than. You should add some, although I'm pretty aware that there's very little pretty Ao Tu Than being created.3. You should show Qipao. The 2 words for Hanfu are the same words. Might as well show Qipao to show how Vietnamese Aodai is connected to the Sinosphere. So maybe for Chinese, put Hanfu-Qipao instead of Hanfu-Hanfu.4. Hanbok and Choson-ot are the same thing. Yukata is a form of Kimono, they aren't different types of clothes. Only Vietnam have 2 different types for its name, Ao Dai and Ao Tu Than... So in order to avoid this, just use 1 name for everyone of them, except for Chinese.Chinese: 漢服 - 旗袍 (Hanfu - Qipao)
Japanese: 和服 (Wafuku, or Japanese clothes. Kimono just literally means clothing, including every clothing in the world, not just Japanese. Wafuku limits it to just Japanese clothes. Yukata is also a type of Wafuku)
Korean: 韓服 (Hanbok. no need for Choson-ot)
Vietnamese: 越服 (Vietphuc, meaning Viet clothing. This includes Ao Dai, Ao Tu Than, Ao Nhat Binh, Yem, Ao Ba Ba, Ao Giao Linh, and every kinds of Vietnamese traditional clothes. No need for different names for each one)

In 1644 there was a civil war in China. Li zicheng finished the emperor of Ming and tried to kill Wu Sangui the general of Ming on the border. So Wu opened the gate and let Manchus in. Then Manchus forced Chinese to shave their hair and wear manchu clothes. It's a huge pity to Chinese culture. But this also benifit China in someway cause Chinese soon occupied Manchu's territory.

China being a huge country historically is incredibly nice to its neighboring countries (comparing to other historical huge empires in the world), not invading them when they can do it, and let them manage their own country. the tributary system actually benefit vassal states more than China because Chinese always give more as a return than what they receive as a tribute.(eg. vassal states gave cows and sheeps as tribute but get gold and silk as a return from China's emperor) More importantly, Chinese also willing to teach neighboring countries their skills and knowledge, that's why the whole east Asia is heavily influenced by Chinese culture. And that's also why today east asia is the most vibrant and fast-growing economy region of the world , many east asia's successes have their roots in Chinese culture infuence like Confucianism. But because modern nationalism, many China's neighboring courtries tried to cut culture ties with China, and only teach young people bad history of China, that's really sad.

While I'm agree that today we should live in peace with each other and I love China culture, I wholly disagree with your history story.
Only Japan didn't have much war with China because they are separated with China by the ocean. Vietnam and Korea had a lot wars with China throughout their ancient history. Guess who started those wars first?
Yes, ancient China had very rich culture and their culture has heavy effect on Vietnam/Japan/Korea culture, there is no denying for that. But China didn't kindly teach other countries their culture, it was inevitably spread to those countries through immigrating/trading/China's invasions. Those invasions didn't have anything to do with culture but were only about expanding territory and getting as much resource as possible.
Ancient China thought about other countries as savage people without proper manner. You can search for Han Chineseism which was the main view of ancient China to the outside world, I believe util this day many Chinese still believe in it. Even in Jin Young novels you can see that ancient Chinese saw foreigner in a very negative way (not Jin Young himself but he described what was true in history). Today you can also find many xianxia novels which wrote by the young writers put China in superior position and put down other countries.

At which point does a clothing become traditional? People say ao dai is too modern to be 'traditional'? Tradition is a practice that people do. No? Didn't many Vietnamese wore this at one time in history? Sound like tradition to me.

    • @Frenzybug
      @Frenzybug 6 лет назад

Lua Tran Totally agreed! Before the Nguyen Dynasty, there was no ao dai. Although, some writers also wrote ao dai is the continuum of those clothings wore by other dynasties, mainly Hanfu (Han Phuc)... Those can be seen from old paintings and sculptures. The modern Ao dai is just a 20th century invention, not so long ago...
