I've had the pleasure of spending time with both Kent and Jon and they are damn good guys. Insanely talented as well, obviously. I used to kick it at Jason Shawn Alexander's studio a lot when I lived in LA and Kent's work space was right next door. Insane to see his work process and these incredible mixed media paintings come to life. This comic series is a classic, great job as always Ed and Jim!
Kent Williams: The most awesome artist who spans greatness from illustration to fine art magnificence!!!
I think that lithe Burroughs-like character is mostly modeled after an older Marcel Duchamp.
Yes. He was also an avid. Chess player.
Definitely agree, Duchamp
Absolutely Duchamp. 🚽
This is what got me into kent Williams. One of the
Coolest wolverine I'd seen back then.
i remember reading these back in the day. fantastic.
Meltdown is my most nostalgic comic. I got this when I was about 10 years old. It made me love Havok. Great to watch this tear down. Thank you.
These, and 'Blood: a tale', were pivotal for me when I was a budding 14-year-old artist. I loved Muth, but I really loved Kent and his wiggly pen line of that period. I was a bit sad when he changed his style, but I quickly grew to love that too.
The older guy who seems familiar is modeled on surrealist filmmaker Jean Cocteau.
You should do Someplace Strange by Ann Nocenti and John Bolton. I loved that book as a kid.
Did some Kayfaber homework as I had the chance to see Kent Williams at Designercon a few weeks ago. I asked him about the division of labor with Jon Muth, and he said that just like Havok and Wolverine in the story, he and Muth started working on the art together, then went their separate ways, just as the characters split during the middle of the story, and then came together again to work on the ending. Super cool dude, with awesome taste. I would check out the illustrated edition of Kwaidan & Shadowings that he did.
Its funny you guys mention George Pratt. He's currently my professor and when I saw this video I was like "this looks like Pratt's work". You guys should definitely do a video on his comics. Really inspirational stuff to me.
I had George as an instructor too. One of the best instructors I had. I know George did a page or two in Kent's "Blood" and Jon's "Moonshadow" GNs
Enemy ace is a great graphic novel...
This is awesome! Omar from Near Mint Condition just announced this story will be included in the upcoming Wolverine Omnibus Volume 2!
Just made a similar comment before I saw yours. I only watch like 3 comic channels and these are 2 of em. This def adds some nice value to the omni
A personal favorite of mine. So abstract at times and then near photo real. A roller coaster with some truly great characters.
I haven't been in comics my whole life, so I only just recently learned of Elektra Assassin this past year. I fell in love with the look. Some of the images I've seen of Wolverine in this book are...interesting but overall the book looks pretty amazing! I'd like to get my hands on a copy.
This was one of my first comics I ever had to hunt down. Had the first two issues for twenty years before I found the last two volumes. Thanks for sharing the awesomeness with your audience!
Straight up going to buy the new Wolverine omnibus vol 2 because of your video. Had no idea this existed and I want my own copy so bad. What a cool set of books. Thank you guys!
Sweet! Highly underrated comic and easily found in dollar bins.
Awesome! First two issues were some of my first comics as a child I still remember getting then for Christmas and how amazing the art is
I am 90% sure the woman is Tori Amos, who was an inspiration for Delerium. Tori Amos has had a big impact on comics despite not ever being in the industry.
Great work! I bought this just before I went to art school and it totally inspired me. I had never seen comics done like this before and it literally blew my head off!
The Havok stuff looks like a lot of Peter Weller reference.
Chris Claremont references this story on a page in uncanny x-men.. wolverine uses hair gel to make his hair look like how it looks in meltdown.. he even says it was something he picked up in mexico...
You guys should do Simonson and Mignola's "Wolverine: Savage Land" some time. It's short and sweet.
Got this series a few years after it came out. Loved it, so much different than anything I had seen at the time.
I enjoy your hot takes on all these books, and the jokes and all. But, more importantly, I love your combined knowledge that you drop in these videos. It's great to learn some history and background, and how the comic industry works/worked.
I'm subbed, and I'll be looking into buying your stuff to support you both. Thanks for all the content!
Ed, the image you asked about looks like Andre Gregory, an actor best known for the film “My Dinner with Andre”. In fact I think the portrait is a swipe of a photo still from the movie.
This was awesome to see. I think this was my very first Xmen comic I ever picked up as a kid and I never found all the issues of the series. It definitely made an impression on me though.
I picked up issues 2 and 3 out of a quarter bin just because it had Walt Simonson's name on the cover and I'm glad I did!
Cantina dudes set us up! I used to have this 4 ish road trip for Alex and Logan. Thanks gents for some wonderful memories bubbling back up to me. Be safe. Mabuhay!
This is a cool mini series. Last night I saw this is being added to the new wolverine omnibus (vol 2) that’s coming out this year, and today you guys drop this vid. Perfect timing
I have these books and they are much treasured! So appropriate for a revisit on your channel guys!
inspiring painting. nice work brothers
I think some these guys were mentored or taught by Barron Storey.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barron_Storey
Love the art of these issues! I only found the first issue of this serie... I'll have to look for the next three!
Never heard of this before and I love Havok
Meltdown looks like buzz Lightyear
I remember going to a comic book convention in the early 90's and wanted to buy the newest Spawn at the time and the vender would only sell it to me if I bought this.
Ralph Steadman does an X-Men comic. Fear and Loathing In the Marvel Universe.
You can achieve that oil look with matte medium & acrylic. Which can speed things up. If you screw up the medium on the oils, the paint will deteriorate after the fact. Then again I've seen a couple of Kent cover originals that were all oil.
Simon bisley uses acrylics and his stuff looks like it was done in oils...
I freaking love this one. I have the hardcovrr
hell yeah! learned about this book from jay and miles
Great vid! Love this book!
I seem to remember a mention of this in one of the X-men trading card sets.
The old man reminds me of harry dean stanton
I think that the chess player that was guessed at at max von sydow is actually marcel Duchamp as a model
Heavy James Dean vibes from that Havok design.
Alex kinda looks like Rutger Hauer too sometimes (e.g. 20:21)
11:16, who is that? That is Marcel Duchamp
I got that at a book sale from the county library dirt cheap. Big shout out to George Mason Regional Library
I get it that the story turns into super hero action lil by lil but i dig the start where its off duty dudes doing cool sutff a la tarantino. barfights booze and dames. Makes me think of fraction/Aja's Hawkeye. have you done one for it? Would love to hear your take on that mini series.
Anybody now the name of the Woverine story where his body is rejecting his skeleton and it's coming out like quills? It also has a Villian who's a shark man. I had it back in the 90's and would like to find it again.
That would be "Wolverine: Inner fury". Bill Sienkiewicz art.
@@thesnuffpunk1 Awesome! Thank you so much
That old dude looks like Marcel Duchamp
Don't you think that maybe some of the bad writing / exposition might have been editorially mandated? i.e. "It's not clear enough here, explain what's happening through the dialogue"
Nice one fellers! When you guys gonna break out your tools and do some workshop stuff again?
There aren't enough 'like' buttons...
Acabo de leerlo. No está nada mal, sino, a veces, la trama se pierde y no queda del todo claro cuál es la idea. Tampoco sabía que Lobezno y Caos tuviesen una amistad así de estrecha.
Could the old guy be John Carradine?
FYI, definitely Burroughs with a little Harry Dean Stanton.
I got the First issue back 1990 and then got super lucky in 2014 and got all 4 issues in NM for $5 each!?!? 🥹🥰😘
