"It's almost punk-rock, it's like he's got three notes and he's gonna play every single kind of arrangement - more than you'll ever conceive of, he's gonna show you." - JR love this. Excellent. 👌👌👌
This has got to be your greatest episode. This is Mignolaverse 101. He’s definitely the best at the Kirbyesque. I mean Hellboy for sure has Thor and Ben Grimm in his veins, but the real prototype for this bad boy is Entrigan the Demon. Merlin’s Demon. And not only that, but he has the Lovecraftian down pat as well. And talk about merging Kirby with Moebius, Mike’s got so much going on. And I love how you described his mastery over the binary inherent in pen&ink drawings.
Watching Mignola grow over the years and continue to master simplification and legibility must be one of life's greatest pleasures. I have this edition and watching ya'll nerd out over it as much as I do was awesome, now I want to go draw!
This is magic. Stark, graphic and streamlined art styles are everything to me at the moment. Mignola is a true master of the craft, for me he's above Kirby.
Dark Horse, come on and put out some Hellboy collections in b&w! Jim you are spot-on about the way the colours muddy this thing, and Mignola's Universal monster movie ability to tell stories in b&w is unreal
I just got this book in yesterday and managed to get a good deal on it. Absolutely love it! Mike Mignola is my favorite comics artist. I really like the experience of reading through Hellboy in Hell without dialogue or color. Mignola is such a great storyteller that all the atmosphere comes through perfectly. I hope we get another volume with the last half of this series since those last few issues are so great.
Lovely book. I just trance out looking at my copy. The black and white works better than the trade, which I also have. In my opinion Dave Stewart is opaquing (it's a verb!) his colours a bit too much these days. The large size and lack of word balloons adds to the treat. Thanks guys.
the corpse is one of my favorite one off Hellboy stories.. Grugach is such a great character that I'd love to see more backstory for outside of the limited bit we get later on in The Storm.
OH BOY was that satisfying to watch! Mignola is so masterful at suggesting so many things. Whether it's textures, form, space, scale, or weight, it's all there. I love that he doesn't have to describe every brick on a structure. It's like good prose or poetry in that way. His work suggests larger ideas without having to over-explain. I feel like on paper it' reads low-poly and unfolds in the mind's eye fully rendered. I prefer his work in black and white for this reason. I can see the colors and values without it needing to be spelled out. 🚬
Great video. The only thing wrong with this book is it doesn't keep going. I could look at his work all day. I have alot of love for all the Maverick/Legend guys from Dark Horse. Looking forward to seeing what you guys have instore for the channel next. Thanks for sharing, as always you guys rock.
The spot ink master at play and work. As always, great vid. BTW, A Mort Cinder video would be so incredibly awesome too. Alberto Breccia's work and legacy deserve so much more love. He was such an underappreciated genius. Especially in horror B&W comics creation. His experimentation and craftsmanship is so off the Richter.
hey guys great job i wish there was an artist edition of Eduardo Risso's work his black and white work , clean lines with no crosshatching , his page lay outs are just as impressive as Mignola's in my opinion what do you think ?
I know it would be a lot of extra work but I wish you could punch in when you’re talking about certain details. Love the channel! Thanks for putting it out.
Thanks for a great review of a master storyteller...I wonder if you see the influence of Hugo Pratt (Corto Maltese since 1967) in Mignola's work - similar use of simplified, relaxed line and shadow, supernatural adventure stories, great use of negative space....
This is beautiful b&w ink work. It would be nice to see the pencil work. I think the only other artist who study a lot of b&w contrast is Frank Miller and his Sin City comics. both of them are good in their own ways.
The reason John Byrne's lettering looked vaguely familiar was because he used a font based on Dave Gibbon's handwriting. He also didn't get Dave Gibbon's permission to do so...
ED PISKOR FOREVER

It's kind of a fantasy vs. sci-fi question. Mignola wins with fantasy for sure.
One of the best art books. period.

Kinda looks like sin city
Come on lads, when's Mike going to be on the main show? Love these, so great.
I was just wondering when you guys were going to do a show on Mike Mignola, awesome 😎
Oh, thank you. I haven’t seen them all. I’ll have to check that one out. I love Screw-On Head.

I remember watching an interview with Mignola and he said he uses a Staedtler 0.3 fineliner.
Didn't appreciate Mike Mignola's art years ago. Boy, was I ignorant! I'm missing out on his cool stuff! Thank you for this!
Most of the artists editions are a bit out of my price range but I may have to pick up a Mignola one. Thanks for sharing it

Not simple. Elegant.

impressive upload Cartoonist Kayfabe. I killed the thumbs up on your video. Keep on up the fantastic work.

Budapest is in Hungary (not Romania)... ;) Thanks for another fantastic AE vid!
I love this book. I own the original of the statue with the monster belly that you discuss around 14:25. So awesome

He has a black and white book you can get of a Batman run he did, but not AE.
This stuff is pure magic! Mignola is one of the greatest of all time.
This is my favorite era of Mignola, the current era. Cartoonish and still elegant.
You guys are the best! Great deep dive!!!
Love his water creatures stuff. No idea how he gets the effect of light and weight displacement just right.
Yes!!!! So glad you made this video!
I know it would be a lot of extra work but I wish you could punch in when you’re talking about certain details. Love the channel! Thanks for putting it out.

... in turn building on the work of Will Eisner and Milt Caniff.

Oh my goodness.....I wish to buy it.
I definitely want to get this book!!
I was about to order it Jim but Amazon Australia doesn't have it listed . 'shrug
Oh I can't help myself.. first! Great vid as always! 👌
YES please!
34:42 this could be ap poster for the movie Midsommar
That city in hell is straight out of the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser comic he did with Howard Chaykin.
Would you guys ever take a deep look into dr. suess?
The reason John Byrne's lettering looked vaguely familiar was because he used a font based on Dave Gibbon's handwriting. He also didn't get Dave Gibbon's permission to do so...
All hail Mignola!!
Well there goes my paycheck
Simplified is too simple, how about Streamlined? Or a new word based on aerodynamic, 'Graphodynamic' - sleek smooth efficient drawing...
i am animator and teolog and have on of this and record a video teologic coment like this
That' is not humanly possible I am 60 years old. Done some decent pieces. But Mignola has sold his soul for sure.
This is my fifth time seeing this video.
😀
