- In this video, Dr. Kamal Singh speaks avbout Restless Leg Syndrome. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, usually because of an uncomfortable sensation. It typically happens in the evening or nighttime hours when you're sitting or lying down. Moving eases the unpleasant feeling temporarily. It is mostly in the legs but may occasionally be in the arm or elsewhere as well. Restless legs syndrome, known as Willis-Ekbom disease, can start at any age and generally worsens with age. It can disrupt sleep. There are two main types. One is early-onset RLS which starts before age 45, runs in families and worsens over time. The other is late-onset RLS, which begins after age 45, starts suddenly, and does not worsen.

The chief symptom is an urge to move the legs. Common accompanying characteristics of RLS include: (1) Sensations that begin while resting. The sensation typically begins after you've been lying down or sitting for an extended time. (2) Relief with movement. The sensation of RLS lessens with movement, such as stretching, jiggling the legs, pacing or walking. (3) Worsening of symptoms in the evening and night. People typically describe RLS symptoms as compelling, unpleasant sensations in the legs or feet, crawling, creeping, aching, itching, electric, pulling, throbbing. They usually happen on both sides of the body. Less commonly, the sensations affect the arms.
While the cause is generally unknown, it is believed to be caused by changes in the neurotransmitter dopamine resulting in an abnormal use of iron by the brain. RLS is often due to iron deficiency. Sometimes RLS runs in families. Pregnancy or hormonal changes may temporarily worsen RLS signs and symptoms. RLS usually accompanies other conditions, such as: peripheral neuropathy, iron deficiency, kidney failure, spinal cord diseases, parkinson's disease, celiac disease, folate deficiency, magnesium deficiency, sleep apnea, autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis, ADHD. It can be a side effect of many medicines as well.
Sometimes, treating an underlying condition, such as iron deficiency, greatly relieves symptoms of RLS. If you have RLS without an associated condition, treatment focuses on lifestyle changes. If those aren't effective, your doctor might prescribe medications. Several prescription medications, most of which were developed to treat other diseases, are available to reduce the restlessness in the legs. Making simple lifestyle changes can help alleviate symptoms of RLS such as warm baths and massages, application of warm or cool packs, good sleep hygiene, exercise, using a foot wrap or a vibrating pad, and avoiding excess caffeine intake.
