Bowie was one of rock music's most vocal supporters of black artists. He called out MTV for not playing black videos until 2-3 am. His band was mostly brothers. He married an African woman and has a daughter by her.

He’s so f’d up it’s shocking. I understand Don Cornelius was furious with him for it. He had to do multiple takes and the shoot went hours over schedule. He’s the GOAT regardless, love and miss you David! The Black Star for eternity ❤️

Its funny how out of place he is in that room. Bowie (or Boo-wee as Americans are want to pronounce) proves here he can be drunk on his ass with coke packed up to his brain and he will STILL perform better than any of his contemporaries ever could.

Don Cornelius was said to be insulted by Bowies behavior on the set of Soul Train ..his lip synched performance was half hearted and half assed. Elton by contrast connected with the crowd and clearly appreciated his audience. Bowies " I listened to James Brown on the street corners" was embarrassing to watch. Decades later his Black tie white noise yuppie pontificating on race relations was a groaner as well.

Bowie was an ET all the way. For an ET the color of the vessel (body) is a non-issue. But music-wise he was absolutely an ET. What he did in these two songs and many others was so extremely creative and new. He has been extending borders all of his life until his last breath. Ask Philip Glass, who was another innovator in his kind (minimalistic music) and worked with him and Brian Eno. They are all Heroes.
