Hiking INTO the Grand Canyon + FREE Camping Near the South Rim!

  • Millions visit, but very few venture below the rim of the Grand Canyon, but those brave enough to face the steep, cliff-side path often do so via The Bright Angel Trail. It’s a total of 12.2 miles round trip to Plateau Point, and this hike is one we won’t soon forget.
We were feeling especially adventurous as we woke up at 3:30 am to drive to the trail head, located on the South Rim near the Bright Angel lodge. With almost 3,000 feet of elevation change, this hike isn’t for the faint of heart. Going down was the relatively easy part, coming back up challenged us both mentally and physically.
Descending in the dark and watching the glow of the upcoming sunrise paint the canyon various shades of blue, purple and ultimately vibrant red was as epic as it sounds. Once the sun peeked around the canyon corner, an almost ethereal rainfall made it seem like we were walking through a living dream.
Our end destination was 1.5 miles past Indian Garden at Plateau Point, an awesome overlook that gives you 360-degree views of the canyon walls you just conquered while getting a birds eye view of the emerald green Colorado River below. Having arrived at our destination around 8:30 am, we knew our time at the point would be short so we could make the daunting climb back to the top before the intense heat set in.
We made great (somewhat incredible) time back to the rim, climbing 6 miles and 2800 feet of elevation in just four hours. The last mile was the hardest ever, having to will our feet to take one step more.
We retreated to our home on wheels, which was conveniently parked for free only one mile from the Grand Canyon National Park entrance in Kaibab National Forest. With towering pine trees and a nearby horse trail, this boondocking spot was a forest oasis. Join us on Patreon for exclusive access to lots of benefits including map pins of campsites like this one.
We even got to take our three dogs into the park one day since the rim trails at the Grand Canyon are dog friendly! Scout checked off her first National Park, while Piper and Ella have lost count of how many they’ve visited.
We’re happy to report that after visiting the Grand Canyon for the first time, thanks to this epic hike, Katelyn is no longer anti-Grand Canyon.

The first time we went to the Grand canyon we were blown away by it's beauty and grandeur. We promised ourselves to come back and hike it all the way down. We managed to snag two spots at Phantom ranch one winter, to do the hike over 2 days. You really appreciate how massive this canyon is by going down it, no matter how far.

love that place, been a few times, but last 6 years ago did the 2night, 3 day, Mule ride to Ft. Phantom ranch, and a day to hike and play around bottom, then Kabab trail back up, epic, hiking would have been hard but less scary, when all you see are ears and thousands feet drop every turn, you never see, the ground, luckily you learn to trust the mules and enjoy, but Oh so scary first hours and we wore bike shorts under hiking pants so butt not quite as sore, but still couldn't walk, lol. Oh and we did in March, way to hot in summer months, though was cold to start 19F, perfect 72 at bottom,

Hi Dr. Chandler George! How cool... I wanted to do the mule ride so bad haha but it's quite pricey these days. The way you describe it is exactly how I imagine in... I am sure it was quite daunting to see the drops offs while riding on their backs. You have to have such trust of the animal! I bet March was the perfect time! It was pretty chilly when we started in the morning, definitely warmed up quickly. We timed it just right! Thanks so much for watching our video! -Katelyn

Isn’t the Grand Canyon awesome and I agree it does look fake standing at the edge. I did that same hike in 89’ and it was cool. We had encounters with the same squirrels 😂 they were trying to steal food from my cousins hand 😳. They were bold. The Elk were cool. We saw them early in the morning at the main gate. They are big. Never saw a ram and that was awesome to see 👍🏼. Great video ✌🏼

There are tons of Elk in the area. Once saw a herd of about 30. Bright Angel trail is awesome but a challenge. The squirrels have no shame! North Rim is super too. I've family in Flag and was going to visit in September as I often do but plans changed due to Pandemic. So, I have really enjoyed your vids from Arizona. Miss Sedona, Camp Verde, Cottonwood, Jerome, Phoenix...well, all of Arizona. I live on the east coast but was raised on west coast. I'll take the west any time. Thanks for sharing your adventures and glad Scout fit in with the other kids.

We see you met the Grand Canyon killer squirrels. Years ago, we were hiking South Kaibab and put down our packs to take some pictures. You should do Canyon de Chelly! No sure what direction you are headed in after your leave here but Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly are well worth your time. Also if you can find a Native Navajo to show you Coal Mine Canyon, it's incredible. So many places and things to do in this part of the country. The North Rim of Grand Canyon is just as beautiful or perhaps more so. Then of course there's Zion, and Bryce. Too many to list here haha.

Hi Andy! Great question... we leave them safe & sound in the RV. We only leave them when the air temperature is cool, we have an automatic fan that ventilates the area as well as a "baby monitor" that will send us an alert if the temp rises or falls and we can also check on them and see what they're up to. 🐕🙂 -Katelyn

Love the Grand Canyon! It's magical during snow season too! 😍
Question on the hike - I'm also afraid of heights. Was it super scary? Was the trail super narrow with a steep edge? We just hiked Scottsbluff and yowza, I was afraid, but I did it! 🎉

    • @NewstateNomads
      @NewstateNomads  4 года назад

Hey! I've heard it's extra special in the snow! There were parts that made me a little nervous, but it absolutely doesn't have intense drop offs. You reallly have to be trying or venturing into an area you shouldn't to fall. I bet you could do it!! You can always check it out in the daylight by walking a little down the trail. The first mile is probably the steepest! At least it felt that way coming back up 😆 -Katelyn

I was there in 1977. Me 4 brothers and our Mom in a Ford Country Squire station wagon ( www.pinterest.com/pin/48413764730478128/ ) . Age range 16 to 9. Mom refused to hike down into the canyon and also refused to let us go alone (imagine that!). We had to satisfy ourselves scaring her half to death leaning WAY over the guard rails. I hiked the Bright Angle Trail , I made it all the way down. Down to the first arch and back up. I was very proud of myself. Ha Ha ,
I also saw someone almost fall . Him and his group were where they shouldn't be and he sliped , one foot went off the cliff, he set straight down allowing himself to caught his balance. Ater that he decided to go back behind the railing.
I have a question. did you have any trouble getting into the park that early in the morning. I thought the park gates didn't open till later in day.

Even going that far is quite a feat... it's so hard climbing back out, no matter how far you go!! Good job. YIKES! That's my worst nightmare... we almost saw a lady go over the side of the pyramid in Teotihuacan and that made me heart skip a beat. That's a GREAT question... we're pretty sure all NP's are open 24 hours a day. There is the issue of payment though, since no rangers are there to collect payments. We have an annual pass though which is great and has more than paid for itself! -Katelyn

I'm wondering why they were not wearing hats. Seem pretty important in the sun and heat. Interfere with the video?

Hi Howard, we had hats in our bags. Luckily, during the hottest part back up, we had a lot of cloud cover and never really needed them. Thanks for watching! -Katelyn

Did 'Kaibab - Phantom Ranch - Bright Angel' in March, doing it in August is outright dumb, sorry!

It was actually July, and we had a great time! The hottest we ever experience was the 90 degrees we mentioned and by the time we got back to the top it was only 75. That's why we started at 5 am, we played it smart! 😉

If you plan to hike into the canyon below the rim, be prepared for much warmer conditions. In fact, summer temperatures along the Colorado River at the canyon bottom can reach as high as 120 ºF / 47 ºC.
Glad you did fine, loved your Mexico videos, hope you make it to Baja, wish you the best!
