true, although nobody is backing up everything right in the middle of doing stuff. i wonder if there is another service that might have saved this situation. a delete or accident guard or something. tbh windows should create the safeguard for situations like this. i just realized those files that randomly disappeared from my desktop years ago might have gone the same way i just never realized what i had done..

Nowadays my backup server does make a lot of snapshots though. Maybe there is software for it as well. It basically makes it so that something stays on your drive no matter what for an stated amount of time. For me it's months
i ended up finding someone who heroically programmed an executable to disable the control z function from working with windows after this, and changed the shortcut for the app that caused this mayhem… such a deadly combo of keystrokes.
i had my best friend over when sote dropped and even though she doesn't care about runescape at all she watched the whole thing with me and we had such a good time together. she still doesn't play, but she's gone on to watch all of by release and the gary videos. i'll never forget us laughing our ass off together over that video, i'm so glad you were able to make it work!
Maaaaaan I felt this. I work as a real estate videographer/photographer, and I have a shit load of weird ass key binds. Such an unfortunate situation but you did the literal only thing you could do, and the quality of the video did not suffer (I'd wager no one was the wiser)

Really makes you think how many of these other cool unique series accounts could be faked where it's not actually done by the account itself, but by a different account and also have the stats overlayed. 🤔
I work in IT and I've encountered one person do something similar. A client writing a novel used a common acronym in his writing, "ATS." which I don't recall what it stood for in the context of his novel. He liked to capitalize it. Well one day he missed the shift key and hit CTRL for the A, which highlighted the text. He hit the shift key for the T, and hit CTRL for the S. This highlighted everything in his document, replaced it with a capital T, and then saved it. I don't know how he managed to pull it off outside of just being an old man who is learning how to use computers. He wasn't sure himself so without being there to watch him make this huge mistake I have no way of knowing. The best we could do for him is recover a version from over a month ago. But that was still a month of writing he had lost from a couple missed inputs.
Even as an absolute beginner who's never used a keyboard, I couldn't imagine taking my finger off shift and pressing it again for every letter. Were there periods between the letters or something?
@@michaelwoods8299 I would have to assume so. Since I wasn't looking over his shoulder when it happened I only have his word and the aftermath to go off of personally.

If anyone else ever runs in to a situation like this, eject the drive ASAP or just rip the power cord out of your computer so that nothing else gets written to the drive. Data recovery services should be able to recover it if you're quick. What happens is the OS won't delete the files right away, instead it will just mark their space on the disk as "free" so that anything else can overwrite them in the future. Once it gets overwritten by something else is when it becomes unrecoverable
I guess the only thing he could have done is to kill the pc immediately after ctrl-z and then give the hard drive to recovery service, or boot into linux and recover files from there. Kudos to Sofa
Just in case this ever happens again, don''t do anything! As soon as you've deleted the folder/files, don't write any new files, create any folders or anything! Go straight to download some file recovery software, and do a scan asap. The soon the better, as the files are technically still there in the system but are just being ignored. The more the system writes to the disk, the higher the likelihood you'll overwrite the deleted files.
