The concept of a sympathetic backstory for the Wicked Witch of the West was a lot more novel when the book came out in the '90s. I don't really understand its enduring popularity, but then, I don't generally like musicals.
The musical is based on about 1/4 of the book, which is a more extensive and adult reimagining of all of OZ. He also wrote versions of Snow White, Rumplestiltskin, and others. You can blame the author and Neil Gaiman, and a few others for kicking off the 15-year fairy tale reboot fad on the early 21st century.

My fiancé absolutely loves The Wizard of Oz. After I told her the BS with the race baiting scandal, she said she already had no interest in Wicked. I asked her why and she said she can’t stand Ariana Grande lol
I am said to be the target demographic, and I'm not interested in the story at all. The actress's behavior on social media turned disinterest into repugnance. But that's me. For people who enjoy this sort of thing: enjoy. I watched Wizard of Oz with my grandmother when it was on tv. She loved musicals and enjoyed this. Wasn't my cup of tea; I enjoyed the time with her but wasn't into it. Anything further involving it doesn't interest me, but those who love it have it to enjoy. I didn't know that SW was a guy's brand as a kid. Sounds silly, but I loved it from the start so it was just part of my world as a kid. I loved sci-fi snd fanatsy too. I loved Barbie dolls when I was a kid, but I was Barbie AND Star Wars. My first favorite cartoons were Josie and the Pussycats, Battle of the Planets, and Looney Tunes- which did puzzle my family that I enjoyed BotP. But I loved it. I had some other girly toys like My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake, but also read books, played video games, played with Hot Wheels and Transformers, built stuff with Legos. I climbed trees, built forts, rode my bike for miles. I didn't know that this was weird by today's standards. I liked what I liked. I wasn't good at sports so I didn't play. I was good at dancing so that's what I did. I didn't see the Barbie movie. It isn't for me. I love men, and the whole ''man bad, man dumb, man this and man that'' isn't for me. It also wasn't what the character of Barbie was about. Barbie was about fun, fashion, and girls finding their own beauty and belief in themselves, to aspire to whatever you wanted. It was never about sh**ing on men or boys. That they turned Barbie into that as excuses for real-life women who aren't happy with their decisions or choices is disgusting to me. Just like the Wicked actress behaving as she has over a fan poster that improved the whole design. And the behavior during interviews- check out Baggage Claim's video about that. It's pretty good.
I am not this movie’s demographic, but love film history, and if this movie is well executed, I will probably check it out because of its echo of 1939. And I concede that Ariana Grande is super talented whether I like her or not. I’d much rather see proliferation of this sort of gendered movie making than to see any more scorched earth neo Marxist destruction of Hollywood’s great boy brands and the crucifixion of Luke Skywalker. I wish success to this movie!
When the wicked witch actress started crying racism over the fan edited poster just because it removed her eyes .that told me everything I needed to know about the movie and the people in it

A lot of people are excited about it because they like the stage musical. Although I think making it two movies could hurt it since many will wait until the second movie comes out to watch it and many will be angry to discover after watching it that the story isn't finished.

Saw it yesterday, wasn’t as woke as I expected… just a token gay character which felt very shoehorned in. A shame Cynthia had that ridiculous meltdown, she was fine in it
Correction: Barbie was made by feminists for feminists. Since it went too far in the anti-men propaganda, they made Barbies the villains and Kens the victims/heroes!
That's basically the main reason non feminists and anti-woke people loved it so much. It looked more like a feminist parody with Ken as the good guy, and Ken was the most popular character in the film as well.
@@jrconway3 Exactly. The agenda failed and united us all against their feminist ideology! Which was the total opposite of their true invasion of the film (painting Kens as the “villains”) by inadvertently making them sympathetic and Barbies seem as the true villains!
Wicked is very popular in the US, Canada...but in South America, Asia and Europe, not so much, I'm sure the movie will do well domestically but I doubt it will be a success internationally.
Whoa they didn't try to subvert the expectations of the target audience? Too bad they didn't force the actresses to shut up. Even if it does well, it probably won't do as well as it should have.
It's crazy how many people don't know the play is based off of a book and there is a lot left out that never made it to stage. Wciked (the book) was you could say the beginning of what if the villian isn't so much of a villian. Something Gregory Maguire has done with other books. I don't know if he was the original person to do that, but he really i say one of the major factors of the symnoathic villian origin stories and fairy tale reboots for late 20th century and beginning 21st century. The play only helped its staying power. The issues, the cast although talented are insufferable and don't help my desire to see the movie, though I was excited before I saw all who was involved. Along with the theme of villian is not truly a villian just misunderstood trope that has been used so much it's eyeroll inducing for it's been done so often. The thing saving it is the fact it's been on broadway so long and theatre kids have been waiting for this movie with baited breath. Even I had the desire for this story existed before Disney's Maleficient practically copied Wicked. It's a shame for with Arianna although I don't like her, this has been her dream role and it's clear from the little I have seen, she clearly has embraced the character with respect.
I feel like Agatha All Along also did ok because a lot of women enjoy it, I watched the entire season and I didn't get the fuss. It honestly is an below average show.
This is a pass. I’ve always been disappointed in villains made heros with an origin story, as this might have been part of the beginnings of that trend. Let villains stay villains. Not interested in otherwise.

11:54 - The boys cracking up, and Jay is off somewhere else. Classic Jay.
My fiancé absolutely loves The Wizard of Oz. After I told her the BS with the race baiting scandal, she said she already had no interest in Wicked. I asked her why and she said she can’t stand Ariana Grande lol
I just despise movies that try to turn iconic villains into "misunderstood victims".
Yuck 🤮 I’m a woman and I’ve never seen Barbie and I’ll never see Wicked! 🤮🤮🤮
Wicked sunny will steal your money boom boom honey
72% approval now on Metacritic by critics. It looks like the reviews were front loaded with fake 100s and are now dropping.
I think you're right. It's a girl movie. I don't understand why anyone would want to see it, but my daughter wants to see it.
Wasn't made for me. I was so surprised Chris Gore & Alan Ng liked it. Kinda lost respect for their takes after that.
critical drinker also liked it and I'm planning on watching it too
When the wicked witch actress started crying racism over the fan edited poster just because it removed her eyes .that told me everything I needed to know about the movie and the people in it
Ignore RT, Wicked only has a 72% critic score on metacritic. That is pretty bad by anyone’s standards. The fact that they keep gassing this up as the next Barbie is never a good sign. No one gassed up Barbie as the next [insert name of famous film]. Doesn’t mean it want make massive bank. But its not going to be a widely admired film even among its target demographic
Gary loved the movie. He sang all the songs
Black little mermaid woke disney
Terrible movie
Of course Ryan knows this will be a hit. He was in the Navy.
😂😂😅
🤣
Another villain is the good guy trope. What are they trying to say making it an analogy for POC, are they saying they are bad guys.....
Ryan is smart. Why does anyone doubt him? 😂
A lot of people are excited about it because they like the stage musical. Although I think making it two movies could hurt it since many will wait until the second movie comes out to watch it and many will be angry to discover after watching it that the story isn't finished.
Wicked is one of the most popular Broadway Musicals of all time. Hard to argue with success guys.
Me and my wife went to see the play on Broadway a few years back. I thought it was fine…I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it. My wife LOVED it. Right to y’all’s point. It’s just not a movie made for dudes.
I always knew this was going to be huge for its demo. Let's face it the stage show was likewise massive.
I'm a woman and I can't stand the faux-girl power crap. Or musicals in general.
your loss. Wicked is a great movie
Can't wait for FNT, where Chrissie and Xray will be the only ones defending it.
Does anyone else wonder why Arianna wont talk about quite on set she worked on that show with that kid. How much did she know or was she happy when they picked him not her? Either way she. Knows everything.
Chick here. Conservative theatre kid (i know i know). This is def a chick + gay guy show....which is fine.
Please don’t say that just because you know just because we’re women were supposed to like this thing because I’m a woman and thanks to Cynthia and her mouth. I don’t want anything to do with this thing except for the fact that I’m gonna be getting the songs from the soundtrack with Ariana, but other than that, forget it
If ur gonna stop seeing films when the actors are assholes you'll basically have to stop watching films.
@ take yourself somewhere else, honey cause I’m not paying a dime to see some self indulgent diva quite frankly is not all that great to begin with same thing with Rachel Segler.
Jeremy you said you saw 40 min of Barbie when it first came out.
I feel like it would be a big hit if they had cast someone attractive and normal in the lead role, but it is not hyperbole when I say it is physically difficult to look at that lady
If Wicked doesn't hit a billion, I'll be shocked.
This is great. Hopefully Hollywood gets the message that if they want to get out THE MESSAGE and make money, they should use IP that actually resonate with the “modern audience” that they keep going on about (basically women). Hopefully they’ll leave our IP alone and make movies that we actually like.
Not my cup of tea. I'm tired of the sympathetic villain cliche.
Oh yes, Wicked will become the next Barbie. Another feminist propoganda film that will be an event for the intended crowd and be forgotten immediately after.
Why wouldn't they cast someone who actually looks like the Wicked Witch?
One is gay, the other looks like a marvel character. They should have called this: Sodom and Gamorra
Yeah not interested in musicals at all I'll be skipping that and I'll go see The Order that looks incredible also
The Return to Oz is awesome
George Lucas said Star Wars was aimed at 12 year old boys bud…so there was a demographic he was aiming at as well as telling a great story.
So was Chris Gore right when he said The Wizard of Oz is Kamala and Alphaba is Trump? :P
Wicked totally sold out at theatre by my house.
It doesn't matter who plays the wicked witch of the West she's green no matter what.
It’s the personality behind the green paint
Wicked is very popular in the US, Canada...but in South America, Asia and Europe, not so much, I'm sure the movie will do well domestically but I doubt it will be a success internationally.
No wicked will definitely not be the next Barbie. It may make some money, but it’s not gonna make Barbie numbers specially, nowadays
Whoa they didn't try to subvert the expectations of the target audience? Too bad they didn't force the actresses to shut up. Even if it does well, it probably won't do as well as it should have.
Im happy whenever Hollywood actually makes a popular movie even if its not for me. Gives me hope that someone at least knows what theyre doing.
Ryan predicted Barbie would be massive
Didn’t watch Barbie, won’t watch Wicked.
AY UP JEZZA AND JAY
For Every Barbie There’s A Charlie’s Angels So Let Hollywood Continue Their Downward Spiral To Irrelevance 😂
This is for women and gaze this is no loss at all for me.
that actress of the Wicked Witch should be in jail.
Gosh, Gary's wife sounds wonderful!!!
If it's like Barbie. I'm not interested. I did watched the board way show and was fantastic.
This is a pass. I’ve always been disappointed in villains made heros with an origin story, as this might have been part of the beginnings of that trend. Let villains stay villains. Not interested in otherwise.
Not sure why anyone is shocked.... The musical has been running on Broadway for over 20 years and even the touring show sells out regularly.🤷
