🙏THANK YOU to everyone who have been leaving comments about the difference between china and splash cymbals! There were not that many cymbals when I was a drummer in 1974 🥁 YES, more ABR on the horizon.

My son and I both love what you do. He's 12 and completely understands and appreciates the art of music. He loves live shows. Through certain contacts of mine, he has been able to meet and hang out with groups after shows such as Saliva, Tantric, Hinder, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and then some. He's hooked...lol. Oh and just a side note...He's a little jealous of my signed Maynard wine bottles on my bookshelf..lol. Anyway...love what you're doing here...we will continue to partake in your journey as far as you are willing to take us. Keep Rockin' my friend...aloha!!

That’s a China cymbal that he’s destroying throughout. He does throw some splashes in there as well. It was kind of a meme back in the day how much the drummer used that China in this album. Not in a bad way or anything, but that thing took a beating for sure.

The lyrics are a basically letter to some who cuts themselves (“roll down the sleeves, don’t let them see how you’ve coped”) and perhaps has suicidal ideation. It’s encouragement to not give up. “You have your whole life to lead.”

If you analyze another ABR song, I highly recommend "Creative Captivity." It's one of their most musically interesting songs, in my opinion, and a lot of it is instrumental. They also have instrumental versions of a number of their albums, which I recommend. The instrumental version of "Identity" is amazing.

If you liked that, their album “Rescue and Restore” has LOADS of intricacy, china, dulcimer, lyrical depth, and even orchestral overlay. I would start, for this purpose, at “Echoes”. It’s well known for its 7/8 and movements between 5 and 7 time. The whole album is riddled with 5s, 7s, 9s, things that when played have a really cool hemiolic effect on the entire album. “Creative captivity” is a movement with a lot less vocals and a lot more dulcimer, trumpet, vibraphone, Marimba, other percussion instruments, etc. you should give it a try! Also been checking out your other videos, you sir have just made another subscriber! Keep up the awesome work!

August Burns Red is probably the most consistent metalcore band out there. They started off a little bit thrashier, and over time started experimenting more, iften throwing in bridges that are a totally different genre. This is their second album, and the first with their second vocalist, Jake Luhrs, who features on every album beyond this.
If you are looking for their most experimental stuff, check out their album Rescue and Restore. Their album Phantom Anthem has a little bit of everything that they had done up until that point. Messengers and Constellations are their most popular albums by a fairly wide margin. Just a fan of the band and wanted to give some insight if you wished to navigate the bands music a little bit better.

You are only scratching the surface on their discography, this is from their 2nd album, and each album has stuck with this formula and simultaneously somehow transcends each previous release. Seriously every song is just spot on but to name some: Meddler, Pangaea, Spirit Breaker, Ghost (was a grammy nominee), Everlasting Ending (my personal favorite ABR song) Lifeline, Lightouse. That's basically my favorite song from each consecutive release in their discography.

ABR is absolutely fantastic, and still keeps topping themselves every record, this is definitely their early days- I love this band to pick one or two songs for you to listen to, but I'd say listening to anything off of the following record to this, Constellation, is truly what "defined" ABR, at least in my eyes- but you really can't go wrong with just about anything they've made. ABR is favorite band for multiple reasons. Everyone member of the band is incredibly talented. The bassist, who you mentioned, is also a fantastic guitarist and plays guitar on many of the newer tracks and a few of the older ones. During live shows, he will switch to guitar and one of the guitarist will play bass for those songs. Speaking of live shows, they are fanatic live. I’ve seen them probably around 10 times. They have never disappointed and manage to keep the energy and passion up after doing this for almost 20 years. They continue to grow as musicians and as a band. The thing I love about them, though, is even while experimenting with newer styles, they have managed to stay true to their roots as a band and what us fans love their music for.

You definitely need to check out their songs with traditional breaks like Separating the Seas, Majoring in the Minors or Creative Capacity! They are excellent at unexpected transitions into non-metal sections that somehow fit the songs so well. Awesome reaction! Cant wait for the next one

Thank you for getting to this band! They sound just as good live, it's incredible. I would recommend the final song of their 2005 Thrill Seeker album: The Seventh Trumpet.

Such a good album and band. The lyrics are so uplifting and the band is so energetic. Not to often do I really get into the lyrics of metalcore bands but the positivity they bring just pulls me in to scream along. "Wave goodbye to the past, you've got your whole life to lead." For example is a great line. Keep pushing forward and don't dwell on the past.

So happy to see you do one by ABR! The other commenters are correct that these guys have been one of the most influential metalcore bands for the past 20 years. This song was the first one tracked for the album, and Matt's drums were done on the first take - quite impressive considering he started playing drums only 4 years prior. He laid the tracks for this album in 2 days!

    Heck yes!
I remember being showed this song back in the late 00s, that at point the heaviest band I listened to was probably Disturbed, so this was an eye opener to me.
And good god it's still as motivating as it ever was, that China cymbal gets smashed to pieces and it's awesome.

Finally ABR! You talk about theater of the mind in some of your videos and they definitely incorporate it in their music. The song that initially come to mind for this are Marianas Trench, Majoring in the Minors, and Coordinates.

Absolutely love the review . Glad to know they are still touring and I was right when picking my favorite band heheheh

This was a mid 2000’s metalcore that the emocore’s loved…and the message of the song was for those who don’t feel well, to fight the voices of loneliness in their heads, to seek friends.
This is good clinical advice to anyone feeling depression or loneliness

Yes!! One of the many reasons I favor ABR more than any other metalcore band is because their music is so layered and technical. I like your description of "melodic metalcore". So true!! Would be great to see you review Paramount.

Thanks for the throwback, Geebz. We used to cover this song a lot in the bands I was in. ABR have been very influential to me and my friends. I've since moved on from that sound, but yeah this definitely still bangs!! 🤘

Their live show is a spectacle. I’ve seen them closer to ten times and they never fail. They are all humble dudes, who love their “job”. They provide a great fan service. Just to show you the scope of their musicianship I would suggest checking out Constellations album in general and especially meridian.

ABR absolute Metalcore legends. Pushed the envelope of musicianship for Metalcore music. When someone asks me what a breakdown is I tell them to go listen to Messengers. Literally the staple of breakdowns

ABR really got me into metal and I've seen them live several times. Great shows and the band members are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Even though my taste in metal has shifted a bit, I still know the lyrics to most of their songs. My recommendations for this band would be: Mariana's Trench, Indonesia, Internal Cannon, Identity and Carpe Diem.
On another note, I can't believe you haven't reacted to the band, Thrice, yet.
Anyway, thank you for taking the time to make these videos. It's educational as well as really fun to see someone else journey through all these different bands.
