      The manufacturers of the iridium plugs tell us to NOT try to gap the plugs. The iridium tip is delicate and easily damaged. The ECM is monitoring spark performance and it will adapt to the gap on the plug unless it is dramatically wrong, like when you have a bent electrode.

      Hey quick question on a 2014 fusion 1.5t .its cut off on me 4 times. 2 times when I just filled up and 2 times when idling with 1/4 tank of gas what would you think is the problem. I have good low fuel pressure and high pressure. The car stumbled and died the 4 times.

      stuck purge valve(under the hood) or stuck/clogged purge vent (on the vapor canister). I just changed mine.@@46doch

    Oh Yeah, one more thing - for those skeptics out there wondering about using Di-Electric grease on your Sparkplug/coil pack boots... I have been doing my plugs this way for more'n 40 years. The only thing that you need to wonder on about is why you didn't grease the boots before now. You Rock Bruddah... Keep'em coming. Always Top shelf videos and automotive information.

    great video and content. your the man!! I like your take on doing one plug at a time. the other day I had all of them out and I had the throttle body removed. next thing I know I bumped the Throttle body and the brass cable holder fell down in a spark plug hole! I ended up using a Tootsie roll and a long stick to get it out! lol

    On a side question... I’m looking to buy a 2013 Police Interceptor Sedan. It has a 3.5 motor.... I see they changed to a 3.7 a year later. Is there any benefits to either engine? I’ve read that the water pump is mounted internally and is a VERY expensive repair. Can you comment on these engines? Thanks! Love the videos.

    I have a 2018 ford fusion 1.5l when starting it sounds like it wants to start but starts to make a weird sound. Push start. Dont sound like a key start starter when bad. with click or grind..
    Any help much appreciated.
    I believe its the starter?

    For everyone posting comments questioning why he said this engine likely won't last to 200,000 miles -- it is simply economics. The vehicles these engines are getting installed in do not have very good resale value, especially when they are hitting 200,000 miles. The repairs on these vehicles is VERY expensive - these engines are for all intents & purposes "dead" when their twin-turbo fails, and there is no patching it up to get by for a little while longer with this engine design. Usually most customers find it makes more sense economically to sale/trade-in the problem vehicle for another new/used vehicle.

      It makes perfect sense in the rust belt. In California, Texas, Florida a car can easily last 16-20 years with little or no rust.

      Does the 2018 2.0L EcoBoost have both GDI and Port Injection?

      If the turbo in the 4 cylinder ecoboost fails at 200k miles, its a bit expensive at around $1,500 to replace but the cost is definitely not unreasonable.

    Hello do you know the firing order…. I have a mis fire on #2 I had it replaced but standing in front of engine I just counted 1,2,3,4 in that order. But I’ve read the order is 1,3,4,2 I’m wondering if I replaced the wrong one because engine light is and mis fire is still happening.

    I drive a 15 fusion titanium eco boost any the Manuel says to gap it at .051” and others say to do it at .028” or .030”, idk what to do!

    I’ve been fighting what feels like a fish bite misfire on a 2014 fusion ecoboost, only at high load (passing or climbing). No codes. Runs beautifully at all other times. Has all new ford coils and plugs from another shop. Any ideas? I’m banging my head on this.

      What is the mileage on the vehicle? At what RPMs and MPHs is this occurring? Do you have a scanner that will show (and hopefully also record) the live data during your test drives? What is the O2 and fuel trim data showing when this "fish biting" occurs?

    Hello Tech Makuloco, and suscribers. My apologies since This is going to be an offtopic question but this is the only place where I can get a real answer. My 2007 expy courtesy lights don't come on when I open the doors, amd I read online that my issue is a bad ECM module, I'm ready to replaced it. Here is my concern
    is it true that new ECM has to programmed? And the only ford's dealer can do this job? Thanks in advanced everyone. .

    Do you have any information on the cam follower that operates the high pressure fuel pump? I’ve heard they’re prone to wear out on the 1.5 and it’s best to replace them every 50k miles to prevent much more damage

      I can only recommend replacing it, i speak from experience... took out the high pressure fuel pump, and the intake side cam shaft!

    Hi Bryan. For the 2013 Fusion the ower manual says SP-527(17´-18´) but in Rockauto it says SP-550(13´-16´). Im guessing it is owners manual but what do you recommend? Thanks.

      SP-527 superceded to SP-550

    I have a 2017 Ford Focus with the tiny 1.0 eco boost. Now clocking 25k and has started to leak coolant. It’s currently at Ford dealer trying to figure out what’s going on. This one may not even see 100k miles.

    Are you positive on the 100,000 change? Even the non boosted guys on the 2.0 EB are seeing foul plugs/misfires at the 60k range on Fusions.

      As you can see here with over 100k miles on a properly running engine yes with Iridium plugs.

      I just recently started experiencing a slight fluctuation in rpm @ idle and that’s what brought me here and I’m at 62,000 on the nose. Zero issues and no codes but I do run my 16 1.5l like I’m on the Indy 500, there’s just something about how these CD4 frames handle that makes me want to put it to the limits 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Keep it going for as long as you can. You won't get that out of these newer 4 cylinder twin-turbo engines.

      No where in my reply did I specify Ford engines - simply in general the newer 4 cylinder twin-turbo engines are not going to routinely last over 200,000 miles like the original poster was getting from their naturally aspirated engine.

      Salvador 1707 hell yes. I was using 95 octane fuel and the piston still blew on me. With the 2nd engine, I’m now using 100 octane for extra security.

    I have a 2019 fusion 1.5 ecoboost. Can my iridium spark plugs in mine last 100k also? I’m only at 40k right now.

      I have same vehicle but a 2018 and my mechanic just showed me my spark plugs are completely corroded at 40,000 miles. So, I am going to attempt to change them out myself for the first time ever today ... Sad to hear they are supposed to be 100,000 miles but mine didn't even last half that. I only bought it a year and a half ago, so I'm not sure if it's something that happened that is normal or the previous owner(s) were rough on it or something...

      I have 53k on mine and I'm not trading it in I keep up with all my maintenance so I don't have any issues. I will say if it makes financial sense and you can afford and want something different to drive go for it

    my 2014 has 211K miles on the original plugs, and no sign of a problem. I'm about to change them anyhoo. And the boots, just for good measure.

    Does the 1.5 have a timing chain or a timing belt

      @Daniel Lockwood The 1.0 and 1.6 are timing belt and the 2.0 is timing chain. Out of speculation and an educated guess I'd say the 1.5 is timing belt. Looking into it actually the 1.0 and 1.5 are timing belt in oil bath. So oil might be even more critical for those engines.

      Tax reasons especially in the Asian market. Essentially it's the same architecture as the 1.6eb but with different internals but same power output and torque values.

      All are very troublesome and being pushed their whole life, in the end they just won't last.

      IM in total agreement, really like the 3.5 non eco boost, but as far as the others in the Ford Line up? all seem to have reliability issues. As a % basis how much of your work is Ford, vs all of the other manufacturers?

      The load on these engines is higher. The 200k miles should be a realistic end of life. Proper and timely maintenance is critical with these engines, don't cheap out on the engine oil and filters.
      Another thing is that they seem sensitive to fuel quality as well. I only put 98 RON in it or higher (note the RON, I'm from the Netherlands and the octane rating is different here). When properly maintained it is a very nice engine to drive with we have the 150bhp version in a C-Max. Even with a 1300kg (2800lbs) travel trailer behind it the engine behaves great.

      If I use synthetic oil and change it every 3,000 miles would I extend the life of the engine and its tubo?

      John Azhderian not only would you extend the life of your engine by just taking care of it and paying attention to your oil. Oil is critical for a turbocharger. Always waiting 30 seconds or so before driving, idling for a few seconds before shutting the engine off, and frequent oil changes can only do good. Frequent oil changes can also help with carbon build up. But synthetic oil is definitely more important then the 3k interval. If you can do synthetic every 3k it's only going to help.

    Wow, a .028" spark plug gap seems like something that would be specified for an old vehicle with points ignition! I suppose they're trying to protect the coils and the ECM drivers if the spark plugs are neglected.

      It's the turbo charging combined with a lean fuel mixture. Plus, the plug is designed to last 100,000 mi and the gap will increase as the mileage builds.

      Hmm that’s weird. My Manuel book just tells me to gap them at .051”. I drive a 15 fusion titanium eco boost and a lot of people say to do it at .028” so idk if I should follow through what the Manuel says or go with what people say

    hey bro love your stuff. I am a subscriber. got one for you. 06 5.4 vin 5. B2 showing miss fires on 5 mostly and some on 7, this on miss fire on verus. on cylinder contribution 5 thru 8 are showing in the neg. but only a little. it will only do it when warmed up. I can hold it in gear and slight power brake under load for a while and it will start missing. and will continue at idle. cut truck off start right back and its smooth. we are a pro shop. one guy does all our phasers and chains. he just put new in both sides. codes p022 p305 p307 p2198 the last on is B2S1 stuck rich, I think the code # is right? had 5 injector and 6 on scope today and ms on 5 was jumping back and forth 4 to 6. but more steady on cyl6. like I said 5 has misfires counting up in the hunderds in a few min. but 7 only in the tenths at the same time. valves sticking? computer control? valve timing? it has a new ford vct solenoid

      put a vacuum gauge on when missing. we have a slightly bouncing needle. cylinder contribution is showing 5 -8 not helping.... also showing B2 50 deg more than B1....but when you rev it up it clears out....it does have second set of dorman phasers

      UPDATE install 2 FORD phasers... no change....if you unplug solenoids and drive truck it does not miss. Has new ford solenoids also. thinking B2 is getting bad oil threw oil passages?? going to put royal purple in tomorrow

    I took #1 out of my '16 Fusion tonight trying to track down P0301 and the porcelain shattered into a thousand pieces, some falling into the cylinder. I'm buying a swivel in the morning and hope I can get everything out of that cylinder and out of the threads. Nightmare.

      @@jeffherrington It had 140,000 miles. The problem ended up being the coolant intrusion issue. The engine was toast. This was a common problem on the 1.5 Ecoboost that Ford let go for several years. I think I heard that the 2.0 Ecoboost also had the problem. They came up with a new design for 2021 that supposedly fixed it.

      @@bradh6185 Thanks for the reply. I just found out about this issue. I have a 2018 Fusion with the 1.5l ecoboost that I bought it 2020. Currently I have 45,000 miles with no issue but definitely concerned for the future so I'm debating on whether to keep the car especially when Ford will only cover it for replacement 7 years from the original warranty date or 84,000 miles whichever comes first which is ridiculous for an issue this large.
      Anyway did you have any symptoms with yours prior to throwing the code do you recall and/or did the issue start close to the 140,000 mile mark? Basically just wondering if it took awhile to trash the engine like a slower leak into the cylinder over thousands or miles or a quick destruction. I suppose it's probably hard to know though definitively.

    Dumb question, but I have seen it happen in other cars. Can a sloppy shifting transmission be partly caused by needing a spark plug tuneup? My 2000 Firbird waked-out horribly when coil pack #4 totally went out. Car wouldn't barely shift out of 1st gear to get it home.
    A little backstory to my 2015 Fusion Titanium, under warranty, Ford replaced my entire transmission because it was shifting sloppy. I think they pushed the warranty replacement through by saying it had metal shavings, but I truly don't believe it did. I never had any codes of any kind either. The transmission still shifts exactly the same way it did before they changed out the entire transmission. They fail to recognise the bad transmissions these cars have after so many miles. Now my warranty is gone, and the transmission is still shifting sloppy.

      The iridium tipped plugs do last up to 100 k miles, that's about 5000 hours operating time. As long as the computer is happy with the spark performance and the engine isn't misfiring or sucking oil through the valve guides, there is no advantage to changing them early.

    Well 200k is pretty good really. Subaru engines are only 100k or so and alot of people praise those 🤔. Ford isn’t making cars anymore so really why make parts. Disposable.

      I feel more confident in the repair doing it by hand to actually feel it seat . Take the Ford modular 2v engines for instance, see my video on that.

    Haha I have 8000 miles on it and it's on its 3rd set of plugs the dealer keeps replacing them and not finding where it's leaking oil in to the engine that keeps fouling them. I called ford and good luck with that as they don't speak English. I'm pretty sure the turbo is where the leak is at

      Not leaking oil, these leak coolentninto the oil and the combo fouls the plugs. TSB finally released recalled for reprogramming all these 1.5 on 12-13-2019
