Well explained tutorial. Just a couple notes that may help others. The induction duct should be covered with a bag to stop debris and the OEM manual says to apply a copper anti-seize to he plug threads.
Stefan Micsa believe it or not, this isn't too bad. Try changing plugs on a Subaru Boxer engine. Depending on the year and model, it'll have you screaming cursing everyone out. frustrating.
Excellent tutorial! I just got a 74K mile 2011 E93 and it already threw up an engine warning and started misfiring with only my 2nd full throttle application. Codes indicate coil on number 3, so I think I am going to attempt changing all the plugs and coils myself so that I can be confident that they are fresh for a while. This video will be a tremendous help.
Great video, save me a lot of money changing the engine coils and spark plugs myself on a 2012 X5. I didn't have to take the strut bar out. Also my cabin air filters are all on the passenger side which I had to remove. That along with other engine plastic to get to cylinders 5 and 6. Also gave me better access to number 4.
Can't find this 14mm think wall socket anywhere. Autozone website included, says not available. Only amazon but i need to get it in a physical store. Where should i try? thx
Oh wow, yeah Autozone says not available. How about this www.amazon.com/ATLIN-Socket-12-Point-14-millimeters-Compatible/dp/B01MXJ3X7P/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=n55+spark+plug+socket&qid=1559921780&s=gateway&sr=8-3 Iam sure BMW makes a tool for this, but it'd cost a lot more.
I have a 2011 BMW 335i twin turbo and I'm getting this error msg. It has a new astock charge pipe, all the intercoller hose have no cracks. Intake Gasket is new . And Everytime I push the gas pedal it gives me this error mag. Code P00BD indicates that the Mass Air Flow sensor 'A' electrical circuit was out of range or had an air flow too high performance..
@@E39Source not yet but I'm going to buy a maf today and go from there. When I'm pushing the gas I hear a small hiss but just can't tell where it's coming from
Not for the E9x N55 specifically- but it's quite simple. Unplug the old sensor, release it from the housing or hoses, remove, and replace. You can watch the MAF sensor replacement on an E39 M5 video that we have to see how that all fits together.
You you need to disconnect the battery? Also I just changed mine yesterday and i drove it for about 20 min and seemed fine later that night I tried to drive it again and it would turn and and immediately turn off right after idk what it can be
It's just a good safety pro-caution. The engine shuts off after being started? That's strange... read the computer for codes that can point out which part of the car to check. I would check all of the electrical connections near the plugs though.
E39Source yeah I think that’s what I’m going to do thanks 🙌🏻also it’s been leaking coolant from the bottom hose that connects to the coolant box I was wondering what that hose is called
If you go to any auto parts shop, just tell them it's a lower radiator hose. They'll be able to pull the right one. Some hoses are just sold by the foot.
Nice write up - One little item though: Did I detect a jump from Newton Meters to Ft. Pounds or was that my imagination? Not a huge deal but my mental metric detector was smelling them stinky foot pounds.
YOU WILL NEED TO INVEST IN A BETTER CAMERA, THE AUTO FOCUS IS NOT THE BEST, DIFFICULT TO FALOW WITH THAT BLUR IMAGES, BUT THE INFORMATION WAS VERY GOOD.
@E39Source it dose work I just didn't with coils cheap socks broke on spark plugs number 3 but I pulled them out with the coils but my first job too it was easy
GAPPING! GAPPING! You didn't say anything about checking the gap on each new plug before putting them in! Plugs that do not have the correct gap will get you into all kinds of trouble.
@@E39Source Yes, but they could still get knocked out of correct gap. I've been trained to always check the gap before installing - just to be sure. I suppose it is a complicated and difficult additional step that may not be necessary.
I did sparkplugs, airflilter, and oil change on my n55 M135i.. Bruuuuh what a shitty design. You have to take off all the covers and sturt bar to get to cylinder 5 and 6.
So all this labor spent taking stuff off and putting back on is what dealers charge an arm for to do huh? Sad I really want a bmw but maintenance seems like a pain
Right, that's why they charge so much. But this video shows that it's really relatively simple to do the job yourself if you have the time and tools! Then it costs a fraction of what the dealer would charge.
@@E39Source Thank you for the video. Most dealers and indy charge from 450$ to 600$ to change the spark plugs. I had an indy quoting 200$ just for the plugs no labor. I am going to do it myself. I have a X5, so on the back, above cylinder 6, I have a little more room and may have not to remove all that stuff.
Like any other modern car. They use plastic to save weight and most of that plastic you have seen, is used to protect parts from dust or for cosmetic reason. You open up a Porsche or Maserati and it is the same.
Great DIY, you literally included ALL the information I needed... the bmw community appreciates it!
Great in-depth step-by-step video, complete with torque specs. The narrator should be the voice for the NY Times Square New Year's Eve ball dropping.
Thank you! I appreciate that, and will be in touch with those guys in NYC immediately :D
Well explained tutorial. Just a couple notes that may help others. The induction duct should be covered with a bag to stop debris and the OEM manual says to apply a copper anti-seize to he plug threads.
Interesting. The Bentley manual advises against using copper anti-seize as do many spark plug manufacturers.
Wow, that's a lot of disassembly for just changing spark plugs...BMW really wants you to go to the dealership
Stefan Micsa believe it or not, this isn't too bad. Try changing plugs on a Subaru Boxer engine. Depending on the year and model, it'll have you screaming cursing everyone out. frustrating.
Or a rotary engine Rx-8...
yeah i've gotten used to it, not too bad...
Stefan Micsa changing the plugs on my dads Lexus Es330 was more difficult... you literally had to take off the intake manifold
Agree. The amount of disassembling is a little annoying for someone like me who really doesn't want to do the work.

Best video ive seen on this n55 spark plug change
When you were speaking about that original spark plug it wasnt gapped properly from the looks of it and all that space between the sparking area.
I just got my F10 Spark plugs replace at 60k mikes, it runs a lot better/ smoother, I’ll probably replace the coils when I reach 100k miles
I'll be doing plugs/coils on my 135 in the next few weeks or so. Thanks for this DIY, in depth as always
Thanks! This clip made the process pretty darn simple to get this job done, really appreciate it!

I agree as a owner of. 3011
N55 watching this I'm leaning to just give the dealer my money I just don't have the time to outs around with that stuff
Veey helpful information. Helped me with my N55 2012 BMW.
Wow! I’m thankful now for having to do this on my N54 E92.
Great video. Gave me insight prior to taking the parts off my own N55.
Great video, I spent a long time trying to figure out how to get this appart with no success. Should have looked here a lot sooner.
Where did you guys get that Bentley manual? I am looking for one for my E82 N55 135i
It appears that these are still available from www.bentleypublishers.com
@E39Source Thanks for the response, I am aware of the website, but the problem is I don't see one for the E82 135i
@@carcrazyguysa4059 Looks like they never made any for the E82.
This video is exactly what I been looking for, Thank You 🙌. Gonna be doing coils, spark plug & oil change today. 😁
Valuable! Well done including great shots of every step in the process.
Thank you very much for this. Excellent tutorial! Will be tackling plugs on my E92 N55 this Fall.
Wow best diy video I’ve ever watched. Super clear explanation👌
Did you have to use a gap tool for the spark plugs?
No, they come pre-gapped.
8:16 what part is that ??? The hose thing. I got mine broken and need a new one
That hose? Looks like a secondary air pump feed to me.
Do you need to disconnect the battery? I read that its not needed
It is good practice to.

Is ECS Tuning the only vendor you deal with when ordering your BMW parts. Thanks for the video.
FCP Euro is my personal favorite, there are plenty out there though.

E 12 and E 18 Torx bolts I belive.
The fact that a spark plug video is going to help me change out the fuel rail sensor on this car baffles me.
Very useful video thank you
At how many miles did your change your spark plugs?
I don't remember how many were on Geoff's car, but I would recommend replacing them ever 50,000 miles or so.
Why do they engineer it so complicated? How many hours would that all take assuming you have the right tools
You could do it in less than an hour if you really wanted to.
Its a 45min job after you've done it once
Glad yall made this video.😁
Great video!!!
I've got an 86 Mercedes 126. Less than 5 minutes to change 6 spark plugs. 🙃
YOU WILL NEED TO INVEST IN A BETTER CAMERA, THE AUTO FOCUS IS NOT THE BEST, DIFFICULT TO FALOW WITH THAT BLUR IMAGES, BUT THE INFORMATION WAS VERY GOOD.
Great video
PRO TIP: if you dont have a spark plug socket, use a regular socket to loosen the spark plug then insert your coil pack to pull the spark plug out.
Good idea, but that doesn't work. You need this specific socket because the walls are so thin. A regular 'thin wall' 12 point socket is too fat.
