You are the one who know China more than me as a Chinese. Thanks for the intro about Chengdu I will travel there soon. Especially the links you provided about ppl’s exploration in other cities, it would be very useful for ppl who would like to travel or move to China, either Chinese or Foreigners.
Great to see the sights of Chengdu as I had my first visit to China this April and spent a week in Chongqing and a week in Chengdu. I loved the parks. I started learning Mandarin two years ago as a retirement hobby and it was so good to talk to the locals even if I found it hard to understand their replys. They were so friendly especially if I tried to say something. I was lucky to have my Chinese friend who I was staying with to correct and interpret for me. My most memorable time was meeting some village locals and chatting to them on my own. It is hard to start learning Mandarin I tried on my own for two years then joined a class in Liverpool UK. It keeps me motivated and I plan to visit China again next year. Thanks for the time you spend making videos. I was not concerned about coming on my own after watching how it is on the streets of China. My friend is a retired professor of Sichuan Institute of Fine Art and the sculpture in the University parks is fantastic. Perhaps you could make a video about the modern sculpture in Chengdu.
Sue Dewhurst welcome ,i grew up in chongqing, and live in chengdu now
I was born in Chengdu, moved to Toronto in 2009, but still think Chengdu is better place to live.^^
“welcome back ”from Chengdu
@@Rockingbird221 You are welcome to Chengdu one more time~~
Hey Austin, I lived in Chengdu for four years and absolutely loved it. I miss it!! Congrats from a fellow Texan!
+PJ's Travels :) :)
Thanks for making this video. I'm an American living in Shenzhen (I taught in Shanghai, too.) and I want to check out Chengdu in a few months. I'll watch more of your videos to get an idea of the city.
Keep 'em coming!
Dude!--excellent video!! I've been watching your videos for a few years now; I was very excited to see that you had moved to Chengdu as I have been contemplating moving there myself. What you, and a select few of others, have shared about "the du" has informed my decision to move there this fall!!
This video is so well done, so informative, and paints such an honest yet excellent picture of Chengdu (highlighting a number of qualities I was seeking in a city) that had I been "on the fence" about the move--I feel this vid would have sold me :).
Thanks for the vids man, please keep them coming!!
+Cyrus Webber If you come to Chengdu, I'd love to hang out! Welcome! :)
Austin, you looks great in this video! I've only been to Beijing and Hong Kong but this makes me want to go to Chengdu so badly!
Just wanted to say thank you for a really informative video. I'm just looking to visit over spring time, but out of quite a bunch of videos, I truly enjoyed yours. Very helpful!
Nicely done! I like the b-roll with the voice over, nice touch.
Looks like a really promising series, I can't wait to see the other videos!
+gnrocks91 :) amazing everyone is really putting some effort thanks for the support
I LOVE CHENGDU :) BEEN THERE FOR BUSINESS OMG LOVE NIGHT SIGHT SCENE :) FULL OF AMAZING HOTELS
Dare you go to live in other regions lol ? Far north and middle southern areas :D
Thanks for sharing other vloggers at the end!
+Aaron Zhu Yes, they are also making videos for this series!
i watched 3 times, and can keep watching remembering my chengdu times :) love that place will be back .... and roll a video together ...oh yeahhhhh
From China with LOVE :*! Welcome back!
the best video so far ^^ thank you
You guys are doing a great job in introducing China.
Helpful, thanks man!
Watching this really brings back the memories, I taught ESL there in 2015, thanks!
it’s cool to see you to be always positive and really have fun in China, unlike those two motorbike guys in shenzhen who published videos with all more and more controversial titles just to spark a debate or increase viewings
Great Job Austin! Keep up the amazing work buddy
Thanks! :)
Thank you so much for this video...funny, useful, simply adorable! Wish you all the best :)
You made me fall in love with 成都! :)
Keep up the great work!
You seem like a very nice human being! Thank you for the informational video.
Austin, WOW! You covered Chengdu in such depth, and your shots are beautiful. I was in Sichuan last CNY and I can sum it up in one word: mahjong.
+Frank Macri Hahaha yep! It's everywhere!
+Frank Macri haha, As a Chengduer I have to admit that. Mahjong is the best entertainment "sports" for us.
+Austin Guidry YES U DID COVER A LOT IMPRESSIVE
Moving to Chengdu in August. Really excited now!
omg cant wait to get back to chengdu in 20 days!!!! i miss my home
thank you for this video! i want to head over to chengdu next year.
Welcome!
yeah ! I am coming so soon......
Thanks for these videos.
Welcome!
Thank you so much for this video!!! Keep going!!
I will!! I will make my "cost of living" video for this series in the next week or two :)
Awesome! It's exactly what I've been needing.
Great video! I did two semesters abroad at Southwest University for Nationalities and you did a great job summing up the city.
Thanks a lot! Try to share it and get more people to come here! :D :D :D hahaha
great sales pitch Austin, I'm sure everyone is packing up now & ready to move. as for me, nice place to visit, but not feasible to make a move in my stage of life. yeah, did a great job at description & all. Thanks, nice informative vlog.
+9363234 Understandable! Haha I just wanted to make a video for the few who may be considering moving. It's a small audience, likely, but it'll be really useful to those few who are actually going to be moving here! I tried to make it as appealing as possible, even to those who won't be moving - glad you liked it!
Austin: Agreed Chengdu is a most unique and desirable place not just to reside but to live. My only disappointment was the Museum of Science. The exhibits while once were state of the art have now becoming dated. However, the near by toy stores are fantastic! Travelling in the nearby mountains will give you many new topics and spectacular vistas. Cheers!
Absolutely beautiful! Hope to visit.
Dude, I'm sold! :)
Love your video. I am from Shanghai, but chengdu is one of my favorite cities. Love the food and life style there
Thanks for sharing man! Really nice video! :) Made me want to move to Chengdu haha
Come on over!! :D
Great video, exactly the things I wanted to see, just that regular everyday life stuff. No “expat” bubble crap!
I did my bachelor’s degree in Beijing and now after finishing uni I will move to Sichuan for an internship.
Nice!! Welcome :D
Great job my friend
I was there for a few days last year. I had a wonderful time. I hope to make it back again someday.
+itzagiven Welcome! :)
It’s so clean. The parks and riverside were wonderful. Subway was easy and convenient. Hot hot food. I’m plant n\based and with a little card from my hotel I managed quite well.
Great tips!
first! :D
You are refreshing. You are positive. You are truthful. You are understanding. You are good. That is how people should behave when exploring other parts of the world and settling down in other parts of the world. China is your home. Be at home. :)
Met someone from chengdu awhile back. I need to check out sichuan, hunan, etc one of these days...
Haha 'I am on the train right now. People looking at me crazy.' Haha
Thank you for sharing the video!
Hi Austin, been watching your videos about beautiful Chengdu. Thank you very much for making this series! :) I am planning to visit in the month of november as a traveller. Any tips for a first timer in China?
I'd love to move to Chengdu! It's my favorite big city in the world. The food is also some of the best :)
Hey Austin, is the sky really grey most of the year? How many sunny and bright sky days there are in percentace per year?
I am planning on going to volunteer with the pandas this summer.
I know a couple of places in Chengdu were they serve panda skewers. Delicious! Let me know if you need some recommendations. :)
I was told there that because of the many cloudy days, the saying goes "When the sun comes out, the dogs bark." I presume because they never saw it. Saw Chengdu last fall for 20 days and had a wonderful time.
Loved the parks and went back twice to visit Wang Jianglou Park, so much did I enjoy it (Xue Tao is one of my favorite poets).
Hahaha yeah, that's true - there's a lot of cloudy days. It's depressing, but when the sun comes out, OH MAN, do I enjoy it!!! Besides the weather, I love everything about this city
Great video Austin! So, what your saying is that Chengdu is almost as awesome as Tianjin:)
+ShifuP haha I'm guessing you're from Tianjin, right?
Lived there for several years, it was ok, but I definitely prefer Chengdu.
I do miss the Tianjin dust though :)
Yeah, I definitely prefer Chengdu!!!
awesome video
Living in U.K. For 5 years now. But will be back ASAP. Love my hometown
I hope you can upload this vedio to youku in China. Some of my friends really wanna watch it. Thanks.
Or bilibili
Austin Guidry how fast is the internet when you're uploading a video to youtube? do you use VPN?
Local local local is here, thanks for your video
Could not have done a better job if you were on a huge budget with an agenda.
Thanks , you just added one more place to my bucket list.
Thanks!! :)
Hey Austin this is an awesome video. I lived in Chengdu in 2013 and this video describes it perfectly. I'm moving back in a couple months and plan on making videos there too!
Wow, fantastic! I'm glad to hear you thought it was accurate! Welcome back, and I'm looking forward to your vlog :D
谢谢这个老外 哈哈
Right now im in Lanzhou University and before comming here I saw your videos, and now I might go to Sichuan University and I find myself doing the same LOL, so thank you very much for your videos :)
Haha fantastic! SCU would welcome you! Share and share - let's get more people in on this party! ;)
welcome to my hometown~~~~~~~
can you give me your wechat id please
i am coming to chengdu
Hey Austin, loved the video!
I've been to Chengdu once, really enjoyed it. My wife's sisters and brother-in-law live there.
I agree with a lot of your observations. Jinli was one of my favorite places to visit.
Great video, whetting the appetite!
For a moment in the video I saw the "Metro" supermarket in the background, at 西南财经大学 station, which means that the green line extension is already operating? On Baidu maps it shows still under construction
+tirolerhut79 It's been open for a few months :)
A interesting news: There's a GIANT airport being built for chengdu(It will be one of the largest in the world). Chengdu will soon be a very important international hub for trade, and investment, thanks to the "new silk road" plan. So it's crazy to think chengdu will change soon, maybe the slow lifestyle will change...
+ARVIN Yeah, I've heard about that, but I hope that it doesn't change the lifestyle :(
+Austin Guidry Yea hope so. My parents are originally from Chengdu, and I always loved the trips we used to take to chengdu. Chengdu is a very special place being close to Xinjiang and Tibet, it has a very unique culture there. I've seen with my own eyes how chengdu went from having small old airport, no subway, no nothing to now becoming a international city.
Fun fact, the current airport for chengdu was originally built by Americans, to launch USAF fighters to intercept Japanese bombers during ww2. Crazy how politics can change so quick in half a century, China used to be ally to the West.
That will never change. Foreigner's don't understand our mentality. At age 5 I was invited to dinner with my parents, my parents warned me were going to a Shanghai-nese couple's home, and that they are cheap prick so don't make them look bad by actually eating the food, instead pretend to eat it. I didn't it what they mean until I got there. Their entree plate was the size of a tea cup dish. It was literally the size of plates we serve starters like peanuts in, not actually food food. So no we will never change, we think with our stomachs and our parents will spend all night playing mah jong and eat a mountain of sunflower seeds.
Yes ,the second airport
Hello Austin ! First of all , I really like your videos :) On Thursday I will be moving to Chengdu as a exchange student. I am French mixed with Togolese and I'm a bit worried for a lot of things and even though I think I will be fine I wonder if I have to be more careful as a POC in China ? Thank you a lot for your good work :D
Racism here is pretty innocuous; there aren't racially-driven crimes like in the USA or a lot of other countries. You'll get some stares and whispers every now and then, but that's about it. Don't worry about it!
Is the didi safe during night time, say returning back home from a night market or a club?
Going to Chengdu next month with plans to move there in the future. Awesome video man
Hey, cool - welcome! Hope you have a great time in Chengdu!
You still say Southwestern University of Finance and Economy a good university...
Austin you are a really great man.
Austin, I have been following you and have enjoyed your RUclips channel. I am considering taking a teaching opportunity to Chengdu and would like to bring my two kids (12yo and 9yo). Can you share any summer programs or activities they can do during my lessons? Is it recommended for children to spend in Chengdu? My kids are really great travelers who enjoy food, outdoor activities and culture. My daughter is so excited about the Pandas. She aspires to become a veterinarian and has spent every summer at animal conservatory camps in Tampa Florida. Before I get her hope and dreams up, are there volunteer opportunities to spend with the Pandas or become an assistant?
Austin, I know that I am asking so much of you and you are the only SME I know. :) But anything you or the group can offer will be appreciated.
Great video Austin! Is the subway difficult to navigate if you aren't fluent in Chinese? I'm relocating to chengdu to teach and want to take advantage of the subway system, but i'm worried about not understanding the signs.
it's bilingual every step of the way
Very well organized! I love it, did you hit yourself in the head with the ping pong ball? Hahaha
+Collin Sphere Thanks! Hahaha yeah, it was pretty close
hello! your video is really great! i am a french student and i'm gonna study in the SWUFE in september ! Could you do a video about how to find an accomodation? Thanks !
hello.u are in wenjiang? It is a nice place.my home town.
May you share the top 5 things you love Chengdu and the top 5 criticisms about the city. So, whenever I visit there, I can prepare what to expect.
开始的地图用错了
I was in CD only 2 and 1 half days, already in love with the city.
+Nadine Lang Yeah, I like it here!
Southwest University of Nationalities 西南民族大学 is great for Tibetan and language studies.
Hello everyone! I was given the unique opportunity to work as a lecturer in Chengdu, Sichuan. Until then, I would like to make new friends from all over the world in advance, who have settled in Chengdu just like me. I come from Germany and I am a professional musician. Classical and Jazz. I look forward to every exchange of experiences. Frank, 53.
I've been living in SH for about of year now. Looking to make a switch, b/c SH just feels like a concrete jungle (thats impossible to escape). I'm considering Hangzhou, Chengdu and Qingdao. This is an odd question. I like Sichuan/Chengdu food quite a bit, but it always upsets my stomach. Do you or anyone you know have any go-to pills/foods to calm an upset stomach after a spicy meal?
People like to drink 王老吉 or 加多宝 during and/or after a meal to calm their stomachs. It's tasty!
watching again ! hahaha :) like it
+Mar CariB Watching again?! Haha thanks! :)
+Austin Guidry like ur foodie personality is cute + funny altogether
Thanks a lot you love Chengdu
CD is a city of relaxation. Moving to CD is really a smart choice!Do you know 江喃?I love his funny CHENG DU accent!
He is very famouse here ,江南
Chengdu is also a great base to explore all the magnificent mountains southwest China has to offer.
+Dirk Ding Agreed! We'll talk about that in the "Travel" video of the series! :)
5:31 that starbucks tho....
You vloged so well Chengdu that started to make me consider to move out there even if i love Beijing kkkk, Woo i am the ultimate foodie, i got pay a visit i want to eat :)
Welcome! If you're the ultimate foodie, Chengdu is definitely the place for you - Beijing can't even dream of competing, food-wise (or life-wise haha). I love it here! If you come here, we can definitely meet up! :)
hehehehe, it really looks so peaceful and less chaotic, definitely on my bucket list now, and for sure would be so cool to meet up :),Keep up the good work Austin
Looks good.
Great video mate! I'm going to study in Chengdu for a year in September. Are there any other RUclips channels about Chengdu you can recommend?
+Jack Cryer There's Trevor James with "The Food Ranger" channel. He lives here in Chengdu, but he only does food - he doesn't talk about Chengdu or China except for a couple of videos a year or so ago we did called "Chengdu, What to Do?" Check him out - he makes great stuff!
There is No Taiwan in China map. Hope You can update this .
i love this place
在美国看到Austin搬到成都去了,回国想约他吃火锅(づ ●─● )づ
great video. , Austin do I need to set my VPN up on my phone and laptop before arriving in China ?
+Redkelly Re Yes, you absolutely do!
Austin Guidry thank you , your upload was great ,
God I would love to go on a "foodcation" in Sichuan. Sadly, I have to love gluten free for health reasons so it will never happen :'(
I am going in July. What are the chances of finding a summer time teaching gig to teach English?
In the summer....in my experience, training schools are pretty empty during a lot of the summer. It was hard for me to get students! The universities and public schools are on vacation as well. I'm not saying it's impossible or anything, but if you want just a summer gig....probably not the best time to do it
Is Quanzhou nice for studying abroad for a year? I can also go Chengdu, is it polluted still?
If you're studying abroad, Chengdu would be a better choice - much better schools and environment for a visitor
My hometown!
The eat food part just make me more hungry
You are starting to look like a famous travel blogger from the classic 90s Travel Channel. I really like watching your videos on different cities and learning more about the Chinese culture. Would you say that the air quality is better than Tianjin in Chengdu?
Will you ever do a video about the Tianjin explosion or news culture in China?
Yeah, absolutely - the air is waaaay better here, especially in the winter!
I don't think I'll do videos on those topics - they're a bit sensitive, politically, and I don't want to get in trouble
I’ve been talking to Andy..long story, but he leads a research team which wants to bring me over there on a special VISA to participate in medical research. While it looks like they’ve gotten approval to get me there-it’s not Chengdu..which my kids know by now, would be my preferred city. Still though, Andy says that we can probably move me to Chengdu sooner than we’d originally thought. It’s going to be at least next year before I can get there bc of Johns Hopkins (who partner with the Beijing team).
Those fried rice balls..what are they called so I can look up the recipe? 😁. Yes, I LOVE Szechuan food...in fact, I need to check...I think I’m low on my LaoGanMa...(the crispy one...heaven 🥰 in a bottle!)
Also, just curious..the universities there, how are they with “older” folks wanting to take some courses? I’ve still got quite a away to go; but Andy thinks once I’m actually there & immersed in the language; my academic background will “kick in” and I’ll be fine. (Although it took me about a month to translate a research paper a few months ago; I’m told that written scientific chinese is the most complicated to learn)
Universities are fine with older international students. They just want more students!
Austin In China I would LOVE to take a chinese history course, maybe a formal course in calligraphy and/or CBP. I believe I’ve mentioned my 83yo tutor who lived near Chengdu, (she & her husband recently had health issues and the family moved them to Shenzhen so they could help them). They’re both retired professors, she spent 20 years at Stanford and is who gave me an “education” on the REAL China, its recent history and amazing reforms and changes. She had also been tutoring me by video in calligraphy and Chinese brush painting-as well as the language; but I became so obsessed with all the supplies, scrolls and books on the Chinese Arts...I kinda neglected my language study. 😁 (PS clinical ADD gets worse with age and calligraphy & painting were SO much more fun than learning a complicated language 😂. Hey! I couldn’t let the 40+ brushes Lili and her family sent me go to waste! Not to mention all the beautiful ink sticks, ink stones, antique brush “washers”, handmade paper...😁) Lili’s granddaughter does marketing for a pet supply company-I’ve been helping with copy & translations on English e-commerce sites; the local post office has gotten a kick out of all my packages from China. Unfortunately, between distracting me from my language studies AND a nasty visit from customs enforcement, (Lili’s husband is also a retired MD who also practiced TCM. He’d sent some tea and...”silkworm larvae sacs”, seriously. It was supposed to cure my kidney disorder. 😂. The local police of my tiny town were like “Really Elaine? You want us to believe YOU were going to eat larvae sacs and Dr D knew about this?” 😂. Actually, I had NO idea what he was sending, they’d promised me it was nothing illegal. Uhmm..the tea for my sinus/allergy problems? I believe it’s called Ma Huang? Yes, it’s illegal. I wasn’t charged with anything.probably because they were too busy laughing at me and my reaction 🙄😂); BUT I have enough chinese painting supplies here to hold my own class! As my Sons friends there found out about my new obsession, they flooded me with more supplies. Between those & cat toys, I guess I attracted some attention and sadly told Lili my art classes needed to be put on hold, and PLEASE don’t send me anymore chinese remedies! 😁. I know the owner of a local health food store who has been able to get me some LEGAL remedies that they recommended. But my dear friend & former colleague, Dr D (Bill), is NOT letting me shrug off my illicit customs experience. I speak to his Med School several times a year and he always introduces me by telling HIS version of my customs story.
That’s OK though...we go back and forth all the time. In fact, I’m seeing him tomorrow and need to put my “BernieBro” bumper stickers in my bag so I don’t forget them. 😁. He’s gonna kill me on this one...😁
I tried looking up “fried Szechuan rice balls” and got a recipe that looks like just fried Mochi, (not Szechuan, but listed as Chinese street food). Is that the same thing? I’m thinking of making some for my appointment tomorrow...sweeten him up a bit. 😁
Haha you know what, I born in GuangHuaCun, everything in this clip is so so so familiar.
is that the "peoples park"?
and now the metro will have more than 10lines this year……
