  • We show some gameplay and offer impressions of a prototype of Freezing Inferno, the new wargame (historical conflict simulation) from Princeps Games, and designed by Vukašin Nišavić, Janko Nišavić and Nenad Mirković. The game covers the Finnish USSR Winter War of 1939-1940 (Finland-Russia).

    1. - At 20:14, the Russian fighters attack the Finnish infantry. I wondered if the range means that an air unit has to be able to get onto the target unit's hex. The developer replied that it does, so by the rules, the Russian fighters should not have been able to attack the Finnish infantry.

    Late to know about this game. I found it used for $30 today and could not pass it up after a quick BGG read to confirm it would be worth a try. Looks like it was placed a few times at most so like new with everything sorted and assembled.
    Just finished your video, which confirmed my feeling in the store. Looking forward to getting this on the table. Hopefully soon.
    Keep up making these great videos.

    I just bought this game and wanted to mention a couple of things about the published version. It appears they really took your advice to heart. The board on the opposite side from the board you are showing here, not only has city names, but it also looks much more like a traditional top-down wargame map. It reminds me a bit of a map from Ambush!. I think this is advice they got saying the above map looks a little cartoonish. Also they did change the font everywhere to a normal sans serif font. It looks much better. I just got the game late yesterday and am looking forward to playing it.

      That's great to hear about the changes and that you've got the final version in hand! Mine arrived a couple of days ago as well. They are very responsive to feedback, and I think the changes they made are very positive. I hope you enjoy the game! :)

      @@ZillaBlitz I haven't had a chance to play a lot but so far I really like it. I just made a change that makes it easier for me. From now on a single unit on a square represents a full stack. I'm not going to actually stack counters until there is some damage. If a unit gets down to strength 1, I will put something on the unit to indicate it is a 1 strength and not 5. I really don't like constantly moving tall stacks of counters.

    Nice look through the game. I quite liked this one when you did your original look at it.
    I imagine the developers kept the Finnish city names off the board, since some of them are unpronounceable (particularly those up north!).

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  2 года назад

      That very well could be the reason, but I think they said they wanted to make the game friendly to newcomers for wargaming, and they thought the city names and information would make things more complex. I can understand that, and at the same time I'm glad they'll be a map with the names too. Everyone wins!

    Great job Zilla! I actually watched the whole video (which is rare).
    I know minis are almost required in today's market, but I want to be the lone voice decrying their use. Makes it feel like a toy. This game at least has a utilitarian option with the dials. I hate wargames that become way overcrowded trying to fit minis on the map. This doesn't include wooden blocks, those are the coolest option ever!😉
    Having spent almost five years studying Finnish, I can appreciate the double-sided board. I'm assuming the side you showed highlights the game info and the other side features Finnish labels, which are pretty much white noise to us English speakers. 🤔

      Thanks for stopping in, Boom! I definitely want to try a miniatures version, as most of the games I've been playing don't have them, and it's something I'd like to try. I can see, though, how a map could get too crowded if the minis are too big.
      On the map, I don't have the second version, they aded it later. I've seem some small screenshots of the prototype version of it, but not more.

    Looks a good game, pleased they have another map. Love the dice roll on combat, not your usual wholesale slaughter. Do the air units have to miss a turn after engaging, ie repair, refuel, rearm or do they attack every time, if they are in range? Looking forward to the tinkering with the game to make it even better. Great play through. Thank you.

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  2 года назад

      I don't know why, but I just love the Anti-Luck Dice. :) And no, the air units can activate any turn. The turns are roughly a month, so I think refueling/rearming would be a bit odd with the time scale, perhaps. There aren't that many air units in the game, either, so having them able every turn is nice. Weather can limit their usefulness, though. The second turn was a snow turn, so range was -4, pretty much grounded the air forces.

      The KS just launched and you’ll likely be disappointed by the other map. It looks nearly identical to this one. They only tweaked what you’ve seen already. It comes with a printable PDF of the “new” map? The actual double sided map is a stretch goal that may be unlocked. That’s odd. No real stretch goals. Pay for STL files so you can print minis? Not sure why anyone would care and who’s got a 3d printer laying about lol. It also appears that there is no storage inside the box as they list the box contents and there’s no images or mention of any. For $71 with shipping (US) it’s a pass for me. There are just too many other games that I’m more interested in. I’ve gotten wrapped up in a few KS games that looked interesting and I’ve regretted them all lol. You gotta definitely be careful with KS. It’s become the new impulse buying lol

    Hi
    If I can give some idees
    -We'll need to have a system to mark which units have move at this turn
    -the air combat result is pretty realistic but it's maybe overpower for the game balance
    -for the public version I think you can stick together the cards of combat result

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Год назад +1

      Good ideas, Pierre! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I was turning units sideways to mark movement/combat status if there was any chance I'd forget, but markers might be nice, yes. There aren't that many units on the board but if you split stacks up there can get to be a good bit more, for sure.

      I do like how this map looks from a distance, but I'm less of a fan of it up close. I can say, having played on it now, that it's very functional and easy to work with. But to me, the lack of historical names and the nature of the artwork gives it a bit of a fantasy feel to the game. So yeah, I'm not at your level of hate by any means, but I am looking forward to the new version of the map.
