- Official Video for Squarepusher's ‘Detroit People Mover’ directed by Jacob Hurwitz-Goodman.
There had long been an intention to shoot a video for this piece on the Detroit People Mover itself. As production got under way, it was apparent that the typically empty train has a peculiar resonance with the desolation settling on urban areas across the world. Director Jacob Hurwitz-Goodman explores our new-found isolation on a driver-less journey through the city, contrasting it with human contact in images from Detroit’s history produced by an correspondingly autonomous printer.
This bleak urban portrait serves as a drastic contrast to Squarepusher’s last visual representation for ‘Terminal Slam’, which with its bustling street scenes was shot just three months before, including at the busiest crossing in the world in Shibuya. These varied aesthetics not only reflect the sudden change of conditions but two very different sound worlds that co-exist within this project.
“I like the way both of these videos articulate salient points about our urban environments - in ‘Terminal Slam’ about the prevalence of advertising and possibilities for its subversion, and here regarding our zombie cities that despite the lack of everyday human contact continue marching on. The track itself is part of a series begun in 1993 inspired by the music of Detroit.” - Squarepusher
‘Detroit People Mover’ features on Squarepusher’s new album ‘Be Up A Hello’, and new EP ‘Lamental’, both available now.

‘Detroit People Mover’ is a stark contrast to the swarming energy of ‘Terminal Slam’ - shot just three months ago at Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, the busiest crossing in the world. Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher) notes that the two videos “articulate salient points about our urban environments - Terminal Slam about the prevalence of advertising and possibilities for its subversion, and DPM regarding our zombie cities that despite the lack of everyday human contact continue marching on”.
I think it's beautiful
Absolutely brilliant. There should be millions of views and beyond on this!
Warp Records they're all zombie cities now
Kinda why he is up there with RDJ really, not that he is as special as RDJ, i do feel they are separate in many ways.
I find the juxtaposition of the futuristic electronic music against the decaying city, and the pictures of a living past and a doubtful present most profound
As do I
These chords invoke emotions I never knew existed. Proof squarepusher isnt just reliant on crazy ass drums.
have you seen him play bass? he's a great musician,, anyone who thinks it's just drums obviously knows jack shit about his art
OK machine. You made me cry. Are you happy
ok computer
As a Detroit native, I feel this song and video rumbling through my veins. Absolutely beautiful.
Hey Jean-Paul
@@elektrosoundwave Hey!
Andrew Mwah the city is both an inspiration and an incredible disaster. It’s difficult to celebrate the blight and horrible conditions, yet it’s also undeniable the creativity that flows from it. It’s a very uneasy subject.
It’s crazy how the birth of modern electronic music couldn’t have happened without Detroit AND London, hand in hand. I was there, it’s burnt into the back of my skull, forever
@@kidarchitecture modern edm isnt just house and you totally forgot about germany -_-
this is genuinely one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard.
Squarepusher had his video filmed during a pandemic with no people on the streets just for the feeling. Maximum hustle, respect
@@ElectricalSwift No, that was Terminal Slam. "The clip, filmed in March 2020, was shot on the empty Detroit People Mover as it made its way through downtown Detroit."
@@tullus.aufidius oops
People ruin everything
@@tullus.aufidius March 2020, lots of people were already in quarantine, even though it didn't become legally official until later in the month. The people mover is underused, but normally in the daytime Detroit downtown streets are NOT deserted as they are in this video.
Detroit is usually quite busier in the daytime. people at this point were already sheltering in place.
2:30 HIGHLIGHT of my childhood - Sparky Anderson leading the Tigers to the World Series after their 35-5 season opening domination of the AL. PURE MAGIC for 10 yo boys like myself, then. As a child of the 80's and 90's, watching Squarepusher and Detroit coalesce in this video to encapsulate the current situation is oddly calming, and brilliant. Thank you.
This video is amazing. No people on the people mover, no one outside the windows. The only people in the video are old photos of people enjoying themselves and living life. Then the shot of the people mover heading off for another loop, having helped everyone in the photos live their lives, still empty, still waiting, still doing its job.
Phillip Glass would see this and think: "Mission Accomplished"
Overlooked the track at first. Now my love for this one is endless. It's the definition of beautiful melancholia.
The ppl. mover has always been melancholic in a way...a mass transit system built to move ppl. from parking garage to destination and back to parking garage in order to leave; acknowledging its own failures, but continually working to fulfill its intention. That and its loop are parables to many Detroiters and others everywhere. The song and video manage to encapsulate this. The timing for both could not be more on.
They parodied it at Disney
I like your take on it.
I teared up. This makes me so happy and... sad. Squarepusher is really back, he's really creating his magnificent art again. I couldn't be more pleased with these amazing results, thank you so much. Excited to head to the live show in Englewood.
Ditto.
"Squarepusher is really back" lol wut? Dude is incredibly prolific, he never left.
@@JupitersWindySkies He was in our hearts, but he basically stopped making stuff for like 5 years. Collabed on like two things, but there was a big ass hiatus. He's back in full swing now, going on tour and releasing both an album and an EP. It's great to see him again.
Altho I wish I had seen him play in Detroit... I’ve been to DEMF 5 years and always figured I’d see him on the line up
i almost cried to this, it is so crazy how much this reflects the current situation
Detroit gave us so much amazing music. Looks like it still inspires. Thanks Tom.
Tom has definitely been using this CS80 on this track! Tom if you out there? Big up man. Been loving your music ever since I’m a kid. You are a giant composer.
I love Detroit. I've been all around the country, and Detroit was the only place where I felt like I was home.
Here i am, a detroit resident. plug in spotify before i start driving, suggested playlist “POV: youre in an 80s film driving at night”. Couple songs into the playlist and this pops up lol. I love it
Reminds me of the clip for " Vordhosbn" by Aphex Twin, a little less manic and well polished with a healthy dose of humanity.. great track, awesome video
Wow. Just wow. This was a masterpiece.
Still is..
Beautiful track and what a haunting video. It resonates and mirrors the feeling of now because it is now. It gave me chills and moved me. I hope to experience a time when Squarepusher releases an album of ambient electronic masterpieces like this one here.
This is a literal tearjerker.
This and iambic 5 poetry are two of the most beautiful pieces of music that I've heard, they both make me feel things that I have forgotten about, memories come back from the dusty corners of my mind, it's lovely and haunting but I'll always shed a tear, truly amazing.
this video was absolutely amazing, i initially expected just shots of the DPM but was very, very surprised to see the prints. thank you squarepusher and warp.
The surrealism, the loneliness, the music, the everything.
Such a lonely day in my life...
Seeing your apartment multiple times in a squarepusher music video>
Detroit people mover:
people: **moved to tears**
Detroit is a trip man. The entire People Mover circuit barely takes longer than this video.
Tom, you should have been commissioned to do the score for blade runner 2049. Vangelis for the new generation, love it!
Square Tangerin Pusher Dream .
Haha, I was gonna make a very similar comment "Tangerine Jenkinson" ❤️
Really great video. This special vibe with no people on the streets. Tom's music as always the best.
🙏 I love this, thank you! I live in Detroit and I'm an artist who works for the Thanksgiving Day Parade here- it made me so happy that you used an image from our Big Head collection in the print outs. Beautiful track and beautiful video. Wish we could've seen you play here today 😭❤️
2021 and it still moves me.
Squarepusher sure changed their sound since I last listened. Last time I bought an album was when you could buy albums. It was “go plastic.” This song reminds me of why I liked him. I switched to BOC in 2003.
A eulogy for lost dreams
Heard my first Squarepusher tune on an airplane radio setlist put together by DJ Shadow, on my way to visit New York City. It was my first time on a plane, and I tuned in to catch "Welcome to Europe" in its entirety. My mind is still consistently blown by Toms god-tier material. Mr Jenkinson youre an absolute genius!!
so excited
Short and sweet - thank you!
Is this happy or sad? I like that it's both.
Its everything
randy watson hello everything
Thanks Tom for this awesome track! My favorite on the new album.
It all works so well
At the moment, music like this is much needed. Thanks
Wow.. What an atmosphere!
Gorgeous, Love It
Genius
Amazing.
Thank you!
So inspiring!!!!!
Haunting
The stark contrast between what was once a great city, full of vibrant people and events on the printer vs. and empty city in panic on the train. Right in the feels.
The parallels between this and Tangerines Dream's "Love on a real train" Just deep.
Always so beautiful Tom. What a testament to your talents as a musician.
Thank you, I felt touched when i listened it.
That hit me right in the feels. Beautiful song, and poignant visuals. Thanks for sharing, Tom.
i love it when he pushes the squares
Brilliant!
Brilliant. I would expect nothing less from Squarepusher!!!
Omg!!!!!!! Thanks squarepusher
Fantastical...!!! Love Detroit.
Wow, who would have thought this'd turn out so perfect.
Your timing for this is remarkable, maestro. Totally different mood, sombre, like the 'Red Weed' section of the War Of The Worlds Musical. Kinda encapsulates the mood of just about everybody atm. Amazing, man.
Thanks, I needed that x
Amazing song ❤️ thanks Squarepusher
Reminds me of Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack
Beautiful and haunting
Gorgeous
Best SP song in a long time! So good!
Goosebumps from the start!
Detroit people mover not only speaks on account of detroit but the whole midwest duting 2020, so much history yet so desolate when forced to be locked away.
Amazing CS-80 Sound!!!
Wow, thank you
Ugh so good
oNE OF THE BEST!
Need the album this is so good keep expecting it to go off on a tangent.
Real Trip. Unreal Symphony !!
Found it very intense! Maximum respects, Tom!
Beautiful
awwww yeah
A synth symphony! Very cinematic and intimate
Thank Tom Great tribute
very nice piece of art
This is art!!!
Sublime...
Art
a masterpiece
Thank you , thank u so much... ❤😢😊 real shit ...makes me soooooooooo pumped !!!!!
What a perfect video.
reminded me of that very cool vordhosbn video
i think the same
I actually had this exact same thought.
Cause of that video I always had good vibes sitting on the metro and hearing it in my head, good thing I dont ride the metro or id now have sad and forlorn thoughts
Cette vidéo était nécessaire. Merci!
vibes
beautiful
Master, you did again. Tearsdrops, but true! Thx until 1997 🖖
This is incredible! Very very deep. Do I dare say the cliche phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words.' This video is pure art.
Very good
One of my favorite fan made videos was Tommib (Rail Parade). Same vibes as this one and just hits you right in the feels.
I am in love with this. Just enthralled, I want to be there on the people mover.
I love my city, and I feel like Mr. Jenkinson loves it too.
Stunning! Love the idea with the printer in the empty train car.
Poignant. Much enjoy. Thanks Pearsquasher.
The somber pads actually remind me a lot of Derrick May's early material.
So sad and perfect
ooooh boi here we go!
