A documentary of the Police and their battle to contain the antics of Portsmouth's 657 crew . For a small city Pompey's best lads punched well above their weight and gained national notoriety for their antics, particularly away from Fratton Park. A natural progression from the Pompey Boot Boys of the 1960's this tasty little firm came from Portsea Island. Being the most densley populated City in the UK the boys had a great degree of loyalty to each other as they were mainly close mates.
IT has to be understood that Firms in the 1980's were a progression from the original skinhead crews of the 1960's and they represent British culture of those eras. It was about fashion, music, camaraderie, turning your nose up to authority. It was about the emancipation of English youth. In the 1960's hooligans of the skinhead era were aged 13-19. By the 1980's most were in the age range of 16-25...still very young by today's standards.
Most of these guys were not career criminals, it was about pride and defending your manor. Such was the bad feeling between Millwall and Pompey during this era that Pompey were banned from Cold Blow Lane and Millwall banned from Fratton Park after years of bad riots.
Interesting how the Police Superintendent at that time introduced plain clothes spotters at away games to prevent the crew invading opponents home ends. The use of CCTV and proactive policing eventually curtailed the activities of English firms, although even today there are odd incidents.
What is shocking in this video is the way Everton fans were treated in the game highlighted in this video. The complete unpragmatic stance taken by Police against 100 Everton fans who travelled without tickets. Here you will see jobsworths in action with their triumphalist attitudes against some decent Everton Lads. Pompey became the only club in England where you couldn't pay cash at the turnstiles. The Police made every game all ticket resulting in Pompey losing 4-5000 from each home game. This was to cause a severe cash crisis that undermined our legendary managers(Alan Ball) efforts to stay in the top division.

I'm Portsmouth born and bred and have lived in the city all my life, and by god this video is so nostalgic. I remember the 657 crew pretty well and they were always talked about, sometimes in a notorious sense, but often in a heroic sense as well.
Lol 1980's England, looks like a great time to have been alive.
+John Smith Well it was pretty grim but at least footy matches had a PROPER atmosphere.
+John Smith Drinking and fighting was the national pass time in the 80s .
+John Smith "a pint and a fight a great british night" the legendary viz t shirt
It wasn't.
Thatcher was busy destroying British industry, there was mass unemployment and mass poverty. Saying that, it was not as bad as times are today; we had had less than ten years of Thatcherism then, now we have had 40 years of its destructive effects to live with.
Play up pompey, pompey play up
Even as a Southampton fan I have to admit that Pompey still have some gritty hard core fans. I'm not supporting violence but it's great to be passionate about your club
The difference between Portsmouth and Southampton is Portsmouth are ready to die for their club.
Fuck off scummer i put it on ya
I love the music from A Clockwork Orange.
Oh Portsmouth We Love You!!!!! Play Up Pompey!!!!! Blue Army💙💙🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧💙🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧💙🇬🇧🇬🇧💙💙💙. Hampshire Is Blue💙
First match I ever went to was Pomey vs Millwall, I heard the sirens at previous meets so wanted to check it out!
657. top boys. all due respect. Luton Town.
First real football firm I ever seen as a kid.

🦁
My father was in the 657 crew and I've met a few of the lads throughout my life !
That's awsome !!! Mate !!!
4.36 errrrrr no that wasn't West Ham .. that was Leeds at Arsenal in 82
That coppers description of a "boy" is quite accurate. Most of the psychologists use the unemployed, council estate kid bullshit. Never met many scrubber lads!! You get your Jibbers but most of them have money!!! This is nostalgia and its SAD what's happened to our working kids culture and national sport!! Evolution my arse
all gone to shit!, same as the music.
657 Vote Docker Hughes - That is genius, absolute class! Thought he would get more than 200 votes though. Fair paly to Pompey from Citeh.
I thought they got over 500. I think the documentary was wrong.
credit where its due the 657 back in d day were a tasty firm,i follow man city and i had a good few tear ups v pompey, home and away.
the bit at the very beginning when fans are throwing chairs is Luton vs Millwall
David Watkins was there that night with Millwall mates.. Strange as I am west ham but mates are mates... Right lively night as was the Chelsea game at the bridge
4:37 was West Ham fighting United at the 85 cup game the footage was used in the hooligan documentary on the ICF

music 2 mins or so in is novel good twist on a classical tune .
4:35 is Leeds steaming West Ham at Highbury in 82 shortly followed by Man Utd and West Ham at Old Trafford in 86.
How the fuck were Leeds steaming West Ham at Highbury? No it wasn’t it was Leeds at arsenal at the old Highbury!!
Pompey play up!!
Rivalry comes from the docks as the pompey dock workers went on strike the southampton workers took there place which crashed there negotiations.
0:06 "and then a few of us started dressing up like mice a bit and squeaking"
is there some rivalry between bournemouth and portsmouth, what with not being in the same divisions.i happened to ask in a pub some months ago how to get to portsmouth's ground.the pub was in bournemouth and the patrons didn't at all seem happy with me.in fact we'd to leave.
Omg I NEARLY PISSED MY SELF SEEING THAT
im from 80s on my moms life 6 57 the only firm to come to brum and do the business
Gary Abbots bull shit boro front line ran Birmingham in there big stand running off shouting zulu dicks
Gary Abbots Bullshit west ham took it to you in and out the ground
night on the tiles West Ham’s ICF were a Joke!!!! Carlton leach?? What a soft wanker😂. We call him Carly Peach down in pompey. That bullshitting twat Carly peach should have died in that Range Rover with his so called mates.
Millwall had a great Firm! Rangers had a great Firm and it may also surprise you but Tranmere, Bradford and Stoke could really have a row.
How was complaining to a journalist, who asked the question, about 500 tickets not being sold, a flashpoint? As if there wasn't enough going on at football games in the 80s without the press and police creating more drama.
i was there, said that the police ops made a differance,no more trouble on the terrace, but the music scene made more.that was the thing that made more than half of what would have been clased the under 5s,teens to early 20 lads and that was city to towns everywere, and how do i know this?cos crews were going differant clubs up and down the country,we would think nothing of traveling 2hrs to go the best raves and see people from everywere that was doing the same, except you.
LOL at them putting forward a political canditate, they deserve credit for their sense of humour!
still top boys on south coast
Pretty sure you 657 boys teamed up with Millwall an still got ran out of Southampton
@@darrenkitcher503 Southampton have never had any sort of hooligan element. Never ever.
@@Seb_Snufflepuss haha u know nothing back in the 70s and 80s they would of went anywhere an had a scrap they are family club now tho
@@darrenkitcher503 What is it you're trying to say then? Southampton are a now a top football hooligan firm? - The days when it mattered were in the 1980's.
@@Seb_Snufflepuss we went at it with them all just because we ain't wrote any books don't mean there ain't no stories to tell
is that derren brown as narrator?
It appears to be two very quick seperate clips of footage welded together. The second clip is filmed on Warwick Road outside Old Trafford and is West Ham and Manchester United. You may well be right about the first fragment.
wolfington you're right that was west ham and united it was toe to toe all day the moment icf got off the train it was the best they ever tried at o/t..fair dos they were on top in the morning but as more united grouped up the more on top we got by 1pm we had them on their toes to the ground they re grouped and started ealking round the ground twatting scarfers..afterwards we had it with them again toe to toe to the station..to be fair it was tough but we edged it at the end but best firm to come and actually look for it at o/t👹👹
mib..top firm!!👹👹
@@mickfoskett6629… MIB we wasn’t then…. ICJ
@@anthonyjones1831...yes I might have been a bit too early with the mib then and of course icj was well established, but regardless, United had an awesome firm in the 80s whiched morphed into the mib..great times!😜👹
What exact year was this?
Is that Alan Davis behind the screen
In Australia there's very little violence at our football games, and what little there is is only drunken one on ones, never organized factions
15:11, I wondered what happened to Frankie Goes To Hollywood
By christ you have no idea do you?? They weren't angry because they weren't allowed in for free, they were angry because they weren't allowed to buy tickets at the gate.
Everton fans told" your going nowhere near a pub, stay here till 215 and well escort you to the ground"! Fans are treated like scum
Where were you at Bramall Lane?
Our two clubs aren't even in the same division. Your comment needs to be more specific, times and dates etc.
good
lets be honest Cardiff good but never in the 80s every Saturday in the 80s was a battle and we loved it best thing we all respected each other
One thing gets me is all the bull about the hatred between pompey and saints going back 100s of years. Maybe in the 2 cities it did but a lot of both clubs support comes from rural Hampshire. My grandad was born in Brockenhurst and watched pompey in the 50s (wonder why) but still liked the saints. My dad watched the saints for donkeys years and took us down as kids 40 years ago and we still support them. But 2 of my cousens are pompey through and through. Also as a teenager I had school mates from Alton who likes pompey, so 1 week I would go with them to fratton park and the next week they would come to the dell. I dont mind pompey doing ok as long as they are not above the saints.
love the way all the Scouse have wee joyrider 'tasches
When the name Portsmouth came up it was only said 657
That was ICF at Highbury not Man Utd
ahem, i wouldn't call 2-2 smashed, would you?

657?
Everton CRC 👊🏻
Bournemouth have rivalry with Southampton and Pompey.
Bournemouth away brings back great memories
Where did they SAY that they were not allowed to buy tickets? All they were talking about was how terrible it was that they weren't allowed in. I don't have time to watch that whole video again, so point me to the minute where they specifically state that they are mad that they aren't allowed TO BUY TICKETS, and I will delete my original post. All I heard was they were angry that they simply weren't allowed in. I heard nothing about tickets. (Maybe the tickets were all gone. It happens.)
20:25 .. What sort of hooligan takes a jam sandwich to a football match. :D
A hungry one
A policeman! :)
Jam sandwich is lush wys 😂

Blackburn best crew for such a small number in the 80s
+joachim piper You having a laugh?....
Bollocks I'm a Man City ex lad and Oldham had a far better mob than Blackburn? Blackburn never came to Maine Rd but Oldham did several times.

the best in the 80s
Everton and boro aswell, kind of strange the way everton avoided the media attention compared to a lot of other big mobs, but they always been big players as have boro
ben what kind of mob did Ipswich have back in the day? Meet a lot of the old heads at games an that and hear stories, but never see any old clips on RUclips involving them...
Max Helm went with blackburn in 88 chased them round the ground and there pubs and during the match they had lads walking round with police picking out blackburn lads to arrest
Ah.
Arsenal's The Gooner and The Herd was one of the best too, with their distinctive 'E-I-E ' chant before causing a mayhem. Guess that's all left in the past since Arsenal is now more of a family and tourist club and any Arsenal fans associated themselves as Gooner while The Herd is close to non-exist since they stay undercover and hidden from the public
is anyone high?
mid 80s the 2nd division was best for footy violence.you had man city,pompey,leeds,boro,chelsea,newcastle,liecester(sic),Oldham..ahh!!! them was the fucking days compared to today with women going carryin on like they know about football call me a sexist bastard but its true!! although City are doing mint on the pitch id swap them days for today in a heartbeat!!! one word Atmosphere !!!! MCFC M20
Bascet1 totally agree shame there isn't more people who think like this about football maybe the sport wouldn't have gone down the toilet
bascet1 Yer spot on mate,A,deen
everton shadiest mob in early 80,s robbing game lads kirkby page moss huyton
why keep showing that Italian game they were the first to try and fight but like typical Italians ran
Why didn't the police just let the Everton fans in?
Elwood Dowd I didn't understand that part myself, 500 + spaces but they would rather have them kicking about the streets, the police are to blame when it comes to things like this kicking off.
Not sure why. According to them it is the club who decided to stop selling tickets but the club would turn round to the police and say that is not true and they would have wanted the extra 500 unsold tickets to go to the Everton who were outside in the streets. The people who were in the street outside the ground who were dined entry weren't even football hooligans they were just simple supporters who went to Portsmouth only to support their club. It goes to show that the police always obey the Tories since this would have been filmed during the Thatcher era.
Order 1-9-8-0
fact,in no way was it the police tactics and cctv.you obviously werent there and dont know what your talking about,i think the thought of gettin several yrs bang up bit the main reason which is a fact was a drug clled ectasy and the rave scene and anyboody that part of a firm will tell you the same,we was all meeting each other when we started going to each others clubs but instead of beating each other we started hugging each other, even more so with the youger lads
There goes the all Everton fans are local myth.
this is what i HATE about football.
that fella saying a lot of everton fans are from the midlands? really? im an evertonian and ive never heard that one...but this is before my time. anyone enlighten me on this..was it an 80's thing...go ed yer midland toffees
Stafford had a housing scheme that was nicknamed 'Everton estate'. Graffiti could be seen from the train south of Stafford station.
Pretty sure you've NEVER smashed them... Have you ever smashed anybody?
🤣🤣🤣
jam sanwich lol
@7:30 lol.. hes well fucked!!
So, let me get this right: the fans who don't have tickets to the match are upset and offended because they aren't allowed in for FREE? And they insist they aren't troublemakers! Just the fact that they're THERE and expecting to get in for free is enough trouble-making all by itself.
On wrong thread love most didn't care if had a ticket anyway so yes troublemakers as if certain supporters didn't go then real fans can get in
@@angie-smart-but-casual The fact that the match was all-ticket would have been widely publicised. If those Scousers travelled to the game without tickets it's their own fault.
I was trying to work out what I'd said I never said anything about tickets I've been to 100s of games over years with no ticket you try your luck you don't get in tough you know the risk .I was saying old bill calling fotie lads council estate kids and stood bye u your mates an accountant a physio a brickie etc
PUP
THE REMAINDER OF THIS CREW ARE GETTING SMASHED BY US ON SATURDAY. SOUTHAMPTON
They love the seaman
See you sat little boys
Boro wé dont run, .. frontline
Those early '80's shorts are well gay!
Typical police loads of space on the Terraces but wouldn't let the Everton fans in then blame it on the club. Then if there is trouble they start moaning even though it's their fault !! Had it many times myself in the 80's when I couldn't get a ticket and the Police always let us in if they could because they knew it would be less work for them.
Up the pompey
Makes me piss liverpool ain't got a firm .
All the big offs abroad are liverpool.
Only reason get no respect is dont follow England....only after the same lads doing the same stuff slagged em after heisell
Dear oh dear you set of mongs.
'657' is that their combined mental age or their IQ ?
Wow, a Bill Hicks fan. You must be sooooooo enlightened.
Yes indeed, thank you... Ah, Tales from the Riverbank, that charming Canadian children's series from the early 60's, with Roderick and Hammy... that makes you a lady of a certain age if you can remember that one...
A song by The Jam ya spud.
The Jam were an English punk rock/mod revival band active during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
They were formed in Woking, Surrey. While they shared the "angry young men" outlook and fast tempos of their punk rock contemporaries, The Jam wore smartly tailored suits rather than ripped clothes, and they incorporated a number of mainstream 1960s rock and R&B influences rather than rejecting them, placing The Jam at the forefront of the mod revival movement......
So we now know that you are a lady in her late 50's who had a crush on Paul Weller a singer who liked writing songs about his favourite children's TV programmes... And lives in the Portsmouth area...
And you're a teenager who's smoked a bit too much weed and thinks Bill Hicks is deep as fuck. It's alright flower, we'be all been there.
