It wasn’t until I played age of calamity then replayed botw that I realised how apocalyptic botw is...
same.. seeing all the ruins from botw described as "village" made my heart sink. i didnt think about all the people.. all the people that died because of the calamity, all the people that lost their lives for 100 years because of the failures of the past..
Right!!! And for example when your hear about hatelia’s battle u just thing there were moblins vs people but then u realize that was everything against people :(
Knowing how many people died lowkey gave me depression
So true. The beautiful scenery and how everything in the wild seems so alive kind of distracts you from that. But then you realize breath of the wild sort of has a different meaning than surviving the wild and the game being so free/open. It’s literally because of how much the world has been removed, you can literally almost hear the breath of the wild.
Okay maybe that’s me reaching and reading too much into things. 🤣🤣
Oof
#1 thing that they DIDN'T change between the two games:
_DEATH FRIGGIN' MOUNTAIN_
Im dying
I approve:)
They did change it so that you are not burning alive while there

what if link simply got smaller in the shrine of ressurection so now everything seems bigger lol
imagine sacrificing your life in an attempt to protect your homeland and your best friend only to be resurrected 100 years later as a manlet. i'd be furious
I can’t believe Link shrunk in the wash 😩
funny enough Link is tiny relative to other characters in AoC, while he's a little more normal sized in BotW
@@Chair-Son ohhhh so it's clear what happened. Everyone shrunk except for Link bc he was frozen
That's tinkles origin story. Was a link who shrunk.
the only possible explanation is that Hyrule, like the universe itself, expands over time
Or link just got really tiny
Side effect of the shrine of resurrection
@YesbutNo also amnesia
Also the fact that a hundred years has passed since then and a lot can change in the environment over that long period of time.
@@toledochristianmatthew9919 its not a long period of time for enviromental change
The map isn't scaled larger in Age of Calamity, Link is just out of shape after sleeping for 100 years.

I love this format and seeing how things have changed. Just one suggestion: you do some shots of the bridge at 7:37 and it's clear what you're comparing, but then you go on a horse ride in BotW for over a minute with no clear reason, only to slide back into another comparison. Maybe you could cut in places like that in the future or make it more clear why you're showing the travel?
I totally agree with everything said here. Love the idea and most of the video but sometimes (especially at the point you brought up) I was a bit lost.
It's fairly obvious that she was comparing the sizes and shapes of the landmasses. It was kind of weird that there was no voice over
@@samlewis6487 Hm, that makes sense. A comparison with AoC would help too.

I prefer vg myths stuff, but yeah
Loading a new map on Age of Calamity and saying “Oh, I remember this place!” was one of my favorite parts of the game
Reverse memories
The reason I think that the distance is smaller between the two is because the devs just wanted a fun size breath of the wild, and that was one of the sacrifices they made to do it.
yeah, the wide open size of breath of the wild wouldn't work the best for age of calamity in all likelihood, at least going by their attempt at a wide open world and such in dynasty warriors 9, though other things in that had also made it a bit divisive already
No. The real reason is because one game is open-world/sandbox and one is action adventure. Stop with the smaller-distance theories.
There’s a very special feeling of clicking a like button and watching the numbers change from 6.2k to 6.3k
Congrats! Feel the dopamine rush through your brain.
(This isn't passive aggressive or sarcastic, legit, I'd be happy too)
13:37 those weird rock formations are actially *really* weird trees! In botw if you go to thundra plains and find one of the smaller ones, you can actually cut it down and itll drop wood. Dont blame you for not knowing tho, i only found out by accident on my second or third playthru
wow, I never knew you could cut those down! you really never stop learning things about this game
wow, i never knew u could cut one down! another fun fact, theyre based off of dragon blood trees, real trees that are named that bc they have red sap!
Those trees surprisingly exist in real life
I thought they were mushrooms
Man, it’s so cool seeing the contrasts between the games’s visual styles. Age of Calamity is much more fluorescent and saturated, while BotW is really muted and weathered
I feel like the main criticism I have is that there is a lot of empty space when showing clips that could be trimmed. Other than that it was good
I think that was a editing mistake
Stonks man
yeah im prepared for a joke or something but nothing happens
I think it's used as a chance to show off the scenery with dialogue intentionally left out so we'd have nothing else to do but absorb anything he might've said visually.

Love this! Bit of constructive criticism, maybe you could quicken the pace? Like, instead of showing you getting to the landmark, maybe you could just show yourself near the landmark and show where you are on a zoomed-in map. IDK, just a thought.
The cutscenes look better in age of clamity, but the world looks better in breathe of the wild
Here is a good animation: Revali uses Stasis while flying, absolutely adorable lol
Absolutely correct. 3 years later in the system's life so they had time to improve the cutscenes, but naturally the world takes some minor graphical downgrades due to the more action-intensive playstyle
I’m down for more of these. VG myths are great, but these are also really good. Nice one Gamechamp!
You've really graduated into one of those content creators that I'll follow regardless of what you produce. It's all interesting.
Next time, we'll be comparing Hyrule from Ocarina of Time and Ocarina of Time 3D
Hyrule field is, as you can see, annoying to traverse, and is twice as long
The water temple has become a cake walk
I really enjoyed this! One thing I might recommend is focusing more on the landmarks that are more one-to-one in Breath Of The Wild, like buildings, and ruins, and distinctive landmarks, and less on the kinda sorta close land formations.
Now this is what I like to see! A real in-depth look at the nitty-gritty details and the inconsistencies between these 2 different versions of the same Hyrule.
I like this idea, but in future episodes, could you show the corresponding location on the map in breath of the wild for each of the landmarks? Might help with getting a sense of how the scale has changed
When the clamity struck everything got reeeeeeally big
A Turtle has swam across many oceans. A Turtle has traversed many dangerous paths. A Turtle has encountered many deadly sea creatures. A Turtle has put its own life in danger just for the sole reason of being able to certify this video with a Turtle Badge Of Approval.

My head canon about all the changes in this game is that it is literally a completely different universe, not just mr. egg coming along to mess everything up, link didn’t have the master sword yet in aoc(said in botw that he’s had the sword since he got it when he was little) geography changes, and also I refuse to believe master kohga live 100 years to botw when he looks 50 in aoc, unless ganon, the little rascle, gave him a spurt spurt of the LIVE FOREVER SPRAY! I WILL ARGUE ABOUT THIS TO MY GRAVE!
Edit: I do know it is an alternate timeline, what I’m saying is that it seems this alternate things happening unrelated to the coming of terrako, like as I said, link got the master sword right before the calamity in aoc, but in the botw timeline, i think in a memory Zelda said he got the sword when he was really young
in a book creating the champion I think about botw they said something about kohga being a name taken from his ancestor so I would guess kogha from aoc and botw are actually two different people. But yeah with weird story changes I'm pretty sure it is a different universe
@@boredhuman6512 One other thing is master Kogha (botw) says, “I was taught this technique by my father’s mother’s father, which lines up pretty well with Kogha (aoc)
SPOLERS AHEAD FOR AGE OF CALAMITY!!!
In the tutorial splash screens in the post game after reviving Terrako, one splash screen can appear where it says the following:
Title: Splintered Worlds
Text: When Terrako-pursued by Ganon's Malice-arrived from the future, a new world was born.
Spoilers
Considering the fact that Ganon is dead by the end of AOC, I think it’s very likely the egg caused a timeline split.
@@Gamefreak-kb2ni you don’t have to revive Terrako to get that splash screen, you just have to defeat Calamity Ganon and unlock the post-game quests.
Gamechamp: Looks like Ganon's been doing some maintenance
That one kid who's trying to prove this game isn't canon: Proof! All the proof I'll ever need!
I mean it isn't canon... it's literally alternate history. The tiny guardian goes back in time and changes the known history from breath of the wild.
Maybe I'm wrong, I haven't finished the game yet, but it sure seems like this is a "what if" spinoff type of small story. I mean what's the point of the tiny guardian time traveling if it fails anyway?
"Oh no! Ganons winning, time to go to the past and warn everyone so we can prevent it!"
*cut to the past*

Yesss this is what I've been waiting for, I really dig the idea of you doing more than just VGMyths on this channel and this is a really cool idea!
Great video, this is literally the first thing I wanted to watch videos about when AoC was announced! Please keep making these comparisons for the rest of the stages!
Love it! I really like how you took the time to cover *all* of the interesting changes, instead of just one or two major landmarks that most other similar - but far less thorough - videos did. There were one or two points where the gameplay footage felt a bit too long (some combat and walking, for instance, could have been removed to more quickly show the actual comparison). But, as a whole, I am really enjoying it!
This is so nerdy I'm in love. I've watched some other comparison videos but they're just so silent and lack any commentary. You're commentary was full of life and super interesting. Great job!
Oh hell yeah! I love Gamechamp, I love exhaustive analysis of minute details in video games, and I love Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity, so I'm really excited for this series!
Little suggestion: maybe give a clear sign on what footage is from where, especially when you're doing the splitscreen.
I'm sure these types of videos take a lot of time and work to put together, but I do hope you're still planning on doing more of this series. I really loved this first episode and can't wait for more of them to come out.
The second episode is in-progress~
Obviously I was expecting a lot of changes and down scaling, but honestly I'm more surprised of how much the tried to keep the same in some form
This is insanely impressive from the devs of Age of Calamity. Keeping so much consistent while making a fun game must've been challenging. And a lot of things that changed are fairly easy to justify given the 100 year gap between games.
Thank you for this video! This was literally the first thing i thought while playing AoC; i was like "i wonder where this is in Botw's map".
Also, i recognized a lot of landmarks and that makes me happy, looks like a bite-size Hyrule and they managed to keep it very recognizable. As well as i got a liitle sad when i played again botw, i'd never realized how destroyed is post-calamity Hyrule.
Again, thank you so so much for this video. It's exactly what i wanted, as i just rushed through the missions (bcz time limits, and my allies being hurt xD) and didn't have time to appreciate it (even if i wanted to u.u).
THIS VIDEO IS SOOO SO NITPICKY IT'S EXACLTY WHAT I NEED!
I was trying to make my own version of this literally just out of fascination with where attention to detail meets practical gameplay compromise.
But with how in detail and thorough you are with this it's perfectly covering all of what I was lookling for!
I'm sure some people have criticisms and such, I'm 100% loving this.

Watching Link travel through Hyrule on his horse is kind of peaceful...
I enjoyed the video a lot. I like the side by side comparison and the smaller details like the door or the crack on the wall.
It must take a lot of time to find and record so many details, but they are highly appreciated
While playing the game, THIS was the one thing I knew I wanted to see, and here we are.
There are some plausible changes. For example, partially buried structures can be because of sediments (100 years is more than enough for that), and the same happens with the "small puddle" that becomes Batrea Lake; 100 years is more than enough for a puddle to become a lake if weather conditions change over time.
This is amazing! I'm looking forward to your future video comparisons! Especially Akkala Fortress! 👍
This is awesome. Ive been taking mental notes as I've been going through AoC, but having everything is so much detail here is awesome.
i love seeing the quiet atmosphere and more emptiness of breath of the wild contrasted with the louder music and brighter environments in age of calamity, very good video 👍
1:16
Actually if you don't pick up the silent princess, it can be found In Zelda's study in the rubble on top of the floor
I really liked the video and can't wait to watch the whole series. I really appreciate the attention to detail and all of the clear explanations (for a goof like me that's spent 200 hours in botw, but doesn't remember a thing about its areas), and my only suggestion would be to shorten some of the showcases (the one with the lake is definitely the best and most extreme example), as I think telling the viewer about some of the changes without completely showing them for more than a minute wouldn't be a conceptually worse way of showcasing the differences. Still a great video, can't wait for chapter 2!
Also, a side note, I would love it if, after making all of the chapters, you would combine them all in one video, as listening to you talk about all this stuff would actually be pretty relaxing for a few hours while doing something else.
Listening to game champ geek out about crazy obscure stuff like this is lowkey hella satisfying

Great video! It's really cool to see these comparisons.
The side by side views are awesome! Having a title bar at the top when you're comparing specific sub areas (like the split path at [14:22]) would be helpful to keep track of showing one game followed by the next.
Looking forward to the next one!
Hey Gamechamp. This is a very minor editing thing, but when you're in moments of silence it might serve you well to use an audio clip of your mic's background noise to keep the audio consistent even when you're not speaking. You can audibly hear the audio clip end when you're giving comparisons more time to see. This is a minor thing, but it helps a lot with the flow of the video. Thanks!
Holy shit you have a good eye for this stuff, really impressed both with your eye for detail and some of the two games' intentional similarities

I love this series! I’ve always wanted to do something like this myself, but I don’t really have the memory skills to do it, nor the technological resources to do so. Amazing work here! I love how much detail you put in, noticing little background objects and trinkets. Can’t wait to see more! But I do know that the next chapters in AoC will be messy to slow down and see details. I will say one thing I’ve noticed from my own playing of AoC. In the mission “Like Grains of Sand” in the Gerudo region, you can freely explore Gerudo town (at least after clearing out some moblins and bokoblins inside the town). There’s no time limit, no outposts to defend. There’s quite a few areas you can explore.
Riju’s room, the noble canteen, the spa (from a back entrance), the area where Patricia is in BotW (to the side of the throne room), there’s an open room in a patch of sand right inside the main town entrance (there’s sand seals in the patch in BotW).
I’m not sure if there are other missions that allow you to freely explore areas like that, but if I find something of note, I’ll edit this message or reply to it or something.
This comment has probably turned into mad rambling as I’ve written it, but I really love this video and I like to pretend that I can help somehow.
I was actually interested in how accurate AoC replicated Hyrule. It makes sense that AoC (a game about fast paced close quarters hoard battles) would have smaller distances between areas that BotW (a game famously about exploration). I kind of hope to see more videos like this in the future, perhaps with BotW 2?

Love your vids. Your awesome
I was so surprised how great AoC actually was. I really didn't care that much of it but changed my mind after playing the game
Thanks for putting all this together! It’s funny how opposite the gameplay is for the two games, in BoTW I was just soaking in the scenery while in AoC I was laser focused on the mission so I missed a lot of this. I also love that you did progressive spoilers so people can watch up to the point they’re at in the game.
Every Patreon reading is a treat.
Also, the pauses in dialogue to cut to gameplay footage are quite awkward. I think explaining the changes or describing the areas on the fly, whenever possible, might fill out that white space. But, beyond that, I cannot think of much to help improve it.

The only bit of advice I can possibly think of is maybe, when comparing the same (or "likely the same") location in both games, have half the screen show the location from AoC and the other half show the location from BOTW. Doing the back-to-back cuts like you did here is great, but I can't hold images in my head long enough to actually compare the two locations like that -- having them side-by-side and present on-screen at the same time is what would help me (and others) clearly see what you're trying to demonstrate.
