at this point, why not just make one video titled "LEGO has a minifigure problem" since it seems like every theme (bar Friends perhaps) has a minifigure problem 🤣
The Friends episode is the Star Wars episode (it's just a bit harder to make a thumbnail with them both in it)
There's been Ninjago,monkey kid,city,marvel,DC and now icons
Nice joke but friends line isn't minifigures it's character figures
Minidolls and Minifigures fall under the exact same category. LEGO intends it that way, so I will approach it that way as well.
GREAT PENPLAYS LEGO ICONS HAD A MINIFIGURES PROBLEM VIDEO.
I think icons main problem is they dont think adults like minifigs. Whitch is crazy because we need towns folk in our town, we need football players in our stadiums, whats the point of getting the set if theres no figs, lol.
Great vid btw, i love this series so far.
I’m glad you do. Thanks for the kind words.
I don't really need minifigs for my dinosaur preserve, I need more dino species. But some choice tourists are nice.
Imagine if we got arkham batman, Johnny test or ben10 minifigures
Pretty sure we got Arkham Batman before.
@@PenPlaysyeah we got
@@PenPlaysi mean same with suicide squad but if arkham knight wasnt M rated i bet they woudlve done sets eventually, legos really dropped the ball over time w dc, and im mean sw waited for cal kestus and he became a $160 exclusive bonus which is stupid
at this point every lego theme has a minifigure problem
Classic, City, and Creator don’t
I'm not sure if you talked about it already, Pen, but discussing CMF vs Set Quality figures would be a great discussion to have. The fact standalone figs for $5 are consistently better than figs in their most expensive sets is baffling.
The reason is because CMFs are their own theme. They have their own budget, so when they do something like Marvel, they don't have to worry about the Super Heroes theme's budget. That's why the quality is better. They don't have to spend money on making building sets either. There isn't too much to discuss otherwise, as interesting as the concept seems, sadly.
@@PenPlays especially if a CMF line is a LICENSED theme, Of course those figures will be MUCH MORE DETAILED lol like DND
@@bearabletable7527 You'll notice that all CMF series have detailed figures. Because CMFs have their own budget, the detail is pretty evenly spread. It's why non-licensed series have so many brand new molds as well.
I work at a retirement community…I’ve seen many Lego plants lately in residents rooms and door fronts. They are liking them.
I agree with you
For the price you're paying for most sets, there should be minifigures included
If a set doesn't have minifigures, whatever, fine. But you'll never see me burn 450$ on a Barad Dur set that still doesn't have all 9 Ringwraiths, especially knowing that it's cheaper for LEGO to pack multiple same figures than multiple different ones. And why Star Wars fans pay 650$ for a ship that doesn't include at least 20 Clone Troopers is beyond me... Once you start holding LEGO to a higher standard, you'll start saving a lot of money, and perhaps start seeing positive changes in the future.
i do'nt spend that much money on lego but I reckon that it's the idea that they want. Think about like, a non-lego statue or structure. I've seen people buy big star destroyers (non-lego) just for display, no figures needed.
lego NEEDS to be held to a higher quality standard for figures, quality, pricing, etc. HOWEVER, people buy these things and I think it can stay that way for now; I'd rather keep the figures in smaller sets for everyone to get.
I am a big hocus pocus fan and was so disappointed that the hocus pocus set didn't have a billy butcherson minifig that I haven't purchased it yet and undecided if I will or not. Besides the Sanderson sisters he is the next iconic hocus pocus character and Lego doesn't include him. Kind of ruined the set for me.
To be honest, while I agree with 99% percent of this video, giving a CMF series to any licensed Lego Ideas set with a huge following would be a really bad idea. Not only would it prevent a new license like Looney Toons or The Muppets from getting Lego coverage, but almost every licence Ideas cover includes most of the main characters in the set. Even if characters are excluded like in the Sesame Street set or the NBC set, it's usually only one or two characters, not twelve. D&D only works as a CMF because it has an almost infinite number of characters to pick from, but with that exception I can't think of any other Lego ideas licence that would warrant an entire CMF series (Sonic and Minecraft excluded as they have whole themes to cover the minifigures that would be in a CMF). That aside, I'm glad this series is continuing and all the other points in this video Lego should really take into consideration.
I'd say Transformers but that gets into a whole issue with Hasbro. a LotR CMF would be nice to get characters without spending so much money on the sets. Dune could also work. So LotR and Dune could both get a CMF series and hell LotR could get 2. ala Harry Potter and Marvel.
@quinnlewis1753 Totally agree, but I was only referring to licensed Lego Ideas sets. If we opened this discussion up to all of the Lego Icons sets then yes, there would be more potential for various CMFs
Ideas sets that are licensed rarely ever offer the complete cast of necessary characters. I'd say only BTS managed that. Not even The Office did that.
You forget that most of these franchise also have plenty of side characters, and alternate outfits for characters already included in the base set that could serve as welcome additions.
Lego has bottled lightning with the Marvel and DC CMF series and they still barely release them. I think we've had 2 each. Not to mention the weird refusal to make a star wars CMF when we've gotten a few Disney and Harry Potter runs. Honestly I usually only shell out for lego at this point when there's a CMF that catches my eye, D&D being the most recent with marvel and space before that. CMF being the only reliable way to get dual molding is frustrating too, because I am dying for dual molded iron man legs but lego won't deliver
Lego needs to release more CMF. Their weird refusal to make a star wars one or include an iron man with dual molded legs in the marvel one is killing me
Mario could be a potenial candidate for a video in this series. Lego's complete unwillingness to make minifigures from one of the most popular video game franchises ever needs to be studied.
That it very well could be. I think that one would have a very... controversial result.
Heck how Lego handles video game sets in general is worth a video. Like overwatch got a whole wave of sets but the legend of Zelda (at least currently) only has one set.
Great video! I'm glad people are talking about how Lego could really be delivering more with their minifigures.
I personally believe that when it comes to adapting IP into Lego form, Lego should generally focus on getting as many characters made as possible (of course this varies depending on the IP). I'd rather a series have minifigs that were only made once and thus rather difficult to find than no figs at all (though a CMF series would make them common enough that I don't think they'd be that difficult after being retired, so I love your idea there!).
I would love for Lego to cycle through more IPs. Though this comes almost entirely from my bias that outside of Star Wars, Ninjago, and Bionicle, none of my favorite IPs have minifigures, and at this rate probably won't for a long time. Mega Man, Shovel Knight, Chrono Trigger, Kirby, Power Rangers, etc. Many of those are just too niche for now, as it seems that any IP that gets covered has to have some kind of big-budget adaptation in the works. Even classics get skipped out on this. It is tragic to me that we are getting minidolls from Wicked before we get minifigures of Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman, etc. from the original Wizard of Oz. Why does the (far inferior, imo) subset of the franchise get figures before the main characters?
That's not to say that Lego shouldn't have Spider-Man and Batman sets on store shelves for the many kids and adults who love those IPs. But I think Lego should let themselves keep sets like those on shelves for longer, while they focus on adapting new IPs.
Again, this is somewhat based on jealousy. I'm not really a Batman fan, and even some of the most obscure villains have some kind of minifigure representation. Meanwhile, I am a huge Mega Man fan, and I would happily buy an entire series of sets if it meant getting the 100+ characters/outfits that I love as minifigures. But unless the series becomes a cultural juggernaut overnight, the best I can hope for right now is that we get Mega Man himself in some kind of gaming CMF, hopefully looking accurate.
I was SO. SO. SO Excited and happy that the Captain America shield came with him (and mjolnir) even if it wasn't exclusive it was such a great inclusion
I actually purchased the Boba Fett helmet as my first adult purchase with Lego after 25 years of not touching a set prior. To my knowledge as a teen, all Lego sets came with a minifig, so I naturally assumed that the helmet came with one too. I was disappointed after realizing that it didn’t come with one and went searching for a set with a Boba Fett minifig to add next to the helmet. Haven’t purchased a set without a minifig that would be appropriate for the set ever since.
Another banger! Love this series :)
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Have I ever purchased a Lego set that didn't have the minifigures I expect?
Well I've been collecting Lego Star Wars for nearly 2 decades now soooo...
I don't put so much into the minifigures like other since the build is what takes more of the budget; and is what will sell me or not these days. But it is valid to say distribution of minifigures is uneven
I'm very much a "build-person" too, but if we're gonna be spending these prices, we might as well get every bang for our buck, right?
always a good day when the pen plays video drops
You are very kind.
I like the idea of minifig scale GWPs that coincide with non-minifig scale icons sets (Eiffel Tower + gustave Eiffel office for example) but the issue with that is it’s usually a one time thing 😕
I own alot of expensive technic sets and 4 of the icons cars and I only own 2 minifigures, both from the Icons Delorean, I would love to own more but I dont want to buy sets just to have them. I think more sets should have atleast one minifigure
Can you please talk about how lego straight up refuses to make a Mario fig?
Exclusive figs in expensive sets make me sad.
I do not understand people’s obsession with figures. Lego are just making sets that don’t need figures with the ships and helmets, I have no idea why they would in any scenario need a figure. When you get some sets, the figures are just annoying and end up discarded in a cupboard as they are just not required for a product where you should be interested by the build.
I cannot believe you are also picking out some of the worst examples for sets needing figures like the pretty perfect ships and Dune set with loads of figures already and no where to really put them all.
Yes, I want more LOTR Rivendell elves! I’d love to have more…even generic ones, as it is an entire civilization living there. Even as a CMF polybag set.
This is whiny, junk, herobot stuff.
We actually don’t really have sets without minifigures, except for two. We started our collection with the modular buildings. The ones without: international space station, flowery bouquet and lego liberty statue 3450. I don’t miss a minifigure for the statue or bouquet. ISS is not build yet, we do have the moonlander too, but that one has minifigures. We also have some brickheads, and I actually would have liked to have the mini-figures variant of those (marty, doc, mandalorian, grogu and ahsoka). All other sets have minifigures. Also, I don’t know anyone who only has 1 lego icon set, everyone I know who has an Icons set, has more. And after that first one, they buy just more and more. ;) also the quality of mini-figures are soo much increasing. I am actually buying the series now. I love looking at them, they are cute, cool and small.
Im missing oogie boogie from the Nightmare Before Christmas set… and honestly also the scientist in the wheelchair
We were soooo close to the perfect figure lineup.
If i were Lego i woud constantly check videos like this one and be sure to read all the coments in order to improve and make us happy :)
But Lego is not doing that and the reason is prosaic, Lego is on profit now for many years. So they dont care.
Someone of the football stadium did if u buyed the stadium u got a free set great video
Both were extremely low effort, and would it have warranted much of any value to the stadium itself
Will you combine every video into a comprehensive one later?
That’s the plan. Sometime this Fall is the plan. I’ll give it some love so that it feels like a full movie of sorts, rather than the episodes stitched together.
I’ll drop solo episodes from time to time thereafter.
At this point lego just has a problem over all not just inconsistency but also pricing production sets and quality as a whole i feel like lego is triyng they're best to market to adults that the charm of lego is kinda falling off tbh
On the topic of including minifigs alongside displays, would it be doable to make minifigs to go alongside Brickheadz, or would that be too over budget and not worth it? Honestly, I feel they’d sell a lot better if they did have minifigs, especially if they’re a character or IP without an existing minifig.
I’ve got a pretty sizeable brickheadz collection and tbh, I’ve never thought they needed minifigs. Collectibles like the helmets definitely need them, but I feel like it’s unnecessary for brickheadz to have them.
05:48 No doubt it was either the studio or LEGO themselves that chose to do this. Whilst the set is designed around the new Ghostbusters film series, the vehicle has a lot of nostalgia factor for the original film(s). So they had two options- include afterlife minifigures, but if they did they’d likely alienate fans of the old film. Or put in both new and old characters figures like they did with the UCS Falcon having OG trilogy figures and radar dish as well as TFA trilogy figures. But this is unlikely, I mean 2 figures like the BTTF set would be fine given the price- four would be pushing it, and eight? Nope. Not for a set that size. So the best compromise is to simply not include figures.
What about the Ornithopter? That’s 8 brand new minifigs exclusive to the set.
At least in the Ecto-1’s case if they went with the old and new cast, half the minifigs would already be good to go.
Does Lego Fortnite also fit the category (option inconsistency) discussed in the video, based on the current sets we have?
I'm not sure where I would put it just yet. I think we need to see a second wave launch for it first before we can come to any conclusions.
@@PenPlays Based on our current sets, fortnite seems to fit "option inconsistency" because Lego definitely could've added minifigs to all of the sets in the current wave, but only one set has minifigs. But I agree that after a few years, fortnite can change categories.
@@andrewyu708seeing the definition I don't think it suffers from inconsistency. The sets that didn't get figs are more just display pieces than actual playsets like the battle bus is.
Voltron
i noticed they put more effort into cmf figs for detail then say some adult lego sets, like looking at new nbc lego set they forgot to add masks for lock & barrel figure and the mayor figure just looks very off to me build wise as if it was say cmf creator doing lock & barrel they probs add masks they wear as well as optional switch to finish off mini figs.
CMFs are their own theme with their own budget. When they partner with licenses, they don’t have to worry about another theme’s budget. It’s why the Marvel CMFs are so much more detailed compared to figures from the theme itself.
If the USC Star Wars sets didn’t include minifigs, all fans would do is complain without even buying the sets in the first place. Plus the sets are already pretty pricey
Oh they'll buy the sets anyways. That's the problem. They're Star Wars fans, they'll complain about a thing, and still buy the set anyways.
@@PenPlays yeah but they’ll buy it and still just complain about while overlooking the build quality, build experience, and detail of the actual set. And when there is a cool figure (like in the UCS X-wing) they’ll complain about the build (like the UCS X-wing)
Respectfully disagree. "More people would buy them if they did [have minifigures]" - this here is a problem. What you're doing is practically calling on Lego to add FOMO to these sets. So instead of the build shining on its own merits, Lego can just slap a very desirable minifigure and put less effort into the build.
I don't really care about the helmet/mask series or the midi scale ships, but if they put an exclusive figure in them like the SW anniversary figures I would be tempted to spend money on something I don't 100% want. That would be frustrating. The one midi scale ship I bought is the Star Destroyer because the build looks cool. I was also considering the Star Lord helmet because of the build, but ultimately I deemed it too expensive.
The Ecto-1 doesn't need minifigures, it's great just by itself. The DeLorean didn't need any either. My opinion is that it is enough for play sets and minifig scale sets to have minifigures.
To me, LEGO Super Mario is the theme that frustrates me the most in terms of lacking proper Minifigures. Don’t get me wrong, the idea behind the general LEGO Mario sets is a fun one, making it a sort of fully interactive Super Mario experience beyond just building it, but I also feel like it’s the reason I’m not really that interested. Don’t get me wrong, as a LEGO fan, I’m not exactly the type to be against play features or anything, nor do I really have high standards for the sets I buy, but the emphasis on full interactivity and the reliance on “Starter Kits” that are required to get anything out of the sets is just kind of… not my thing? Furthermore, it also kind of miffs me that the only LEGO Mario sets that fall out of that category (the 18+ sets) are non-Minifigure scale sculptures and builds which ARE really good, but it still doesn’t really fill that void.
What I can really appreciate now is that they’re taking the Interactive figures in a new direction. Playset focus rather than “course builders.”
On a surface level, the concept of the interactive figures has that “Nintendo Magic” you only really see from time to time, and I really like it for that.
Should of gotten a bumblebee minifigure
Transformers minifigs would have been neat.
The comments missing the point on what a video series is .
It happens sometimes, and that's okay. The videos are out there, so if they want to know more, they can.
I think they should Put minifigs in sets focused on play. Or cmfs, Or specifically minifig display set like the new age of ultron group set. So they arent just standing under some recreation of a prop or mask. Taking away from what is ultimately ment to be a display set
So you don’t wan minifigs to display with your display set as they to can be used for display?
@@PenPlays nah not really. Id prefer minifigures be in their own focused display sets that let them shine as the focus. For general aesthetic reasons I think it looks better to have them in a scene doing something than just standing under a brick built prop. Taking attention away from what should be the focus of the purchase. As is what happened with phase 2 rex and the venator.
In my opinion I think your milking the concept of xyz has a minifigure problem idk I just think the concept is getting old .
If you feel so, that’s okay. You don’t have to watch.
This mf thinks everything has a Minifigures problem
City, Classic, and Creator don’t!
I dont buy some sets cuz they lack minifigs.
Missing out on some great builds, especially if they're worth their value.
They should stop making Lego mini figures have such busy designs. They need to get simpler.
