Objectively, Atollon was more of a devastating loss than Hoth. But the silver lining was that Hoth occurred after Yavin which was a turning point of the war, it can be deemed as a setback rather than a downright catastrophe for Rebel morale.
In a sense yes, but I'd still lean on Hoth being the worse loss. If for no other reason than even though Atollon was percentage wise a near total loss their were still other rebel cells and bases they could fall back on. By the time hoth happened their wasn't really anywhere in the galaxy the rebels could run too, not to mention the sheer amount of work and material they lost evacuating the base.
I remember being shocked when I read one of the old Star Wars reference books and it was explained to me that Hoth was actually a LOSS for the Rebellion. I have no idea why this never penetrated my head before right then, it made perfect sense to me the second I read it but something about the way it was depicted in the movie didn't get that across to a young me.
If you're my age or younger, it's because when you first saw it, you were so young that you didn't have a concept of strategy, and you didn't reexamine it until you saw the reference book. When you see it as a kid, all you notice is that the bad guy failed to catch the heroes, and hey! Obi Wan is talking to Luke again!
It was a tactical loss for the Rebellion but a Strategic win for them as well. They were overpowered in battle so they lost on the tactical front and had to withdraw but there grand goal was to withdraw successfully, thus the Rebellion could live to fight another day. Whereas the Imperial strategic goal was to destroy the Rebels once and for all and capture Luke and neither of those were achieved from them winning the battle.
Hoth was a tactical defeat for the rebellion, they lost some vessels, left behind much equipment, lost more men than the Empire, and had to flee their base. But strategically, Hoth was a rebel victory. Faced with a situation where the rebellion could have been deprived of all their civilian and many of their military leaders, they managed to escape and join the bulk of their fleet.
When you survive to fight another day, most will see that as a win, even if you've had to retreat (and the movie didn't show the Empire butchering the defenders too much either - just the scene of the exterior withdrawal and allusions to it indoors, which is where they dropped the ball at).
they lost a lot of personnel and equipment, as well as their biggest single base. Their leadership had to scatter into small fleets on the run, their ships going all over the galaxy. Basically the Rebels went back to their roots of being small cells, relying on spies and guerilla warfare. The Empire published it as a big win, even though Vader knew otherwise as Luke and Leia were still alive, as were key rebels like Jan Dodona and Rogue Squadron. The Rebels were building up their forces to challenge the Empire in a more conventional way up to then, but like at Lothal the Empire found them and wiped out that option.

The series so far is very well detailed and informative. After the galactic civil war, I would love to see the clone wars in full detail, for I can only imagine how amazing that would be.
Love it when you guys cover the more well known battles of Star Wars. Don’t get me wrong I like the coverage of the other less iconic battles but Hoth is just so iconic in demonstrating Imperial might on the battlefield.
I was a really stupid kid back then as I utterly HATED the battle of hoth because it did not take place in space, the rebels lost, and it featured lame walking animal tanks and tow speeders that paled in comparison to XWings. Today...well I still don't like the speeders that much, but the walkers are amazing in their execution and special effects and I appreciate the battle of hoth from a story perspective.
“Hoth? HOTH?? A bazillion planets to find a base for us, and you had to pick the coldest? Does this ice cube even ORBIT a star for some heat? Wtf, Luke?”
I don’t think you can call the Battle Of Hoth a defeat for the Rebel Alliance. They’re a guerrilla army. A guerrilla movement does not need to achieve conventional military victory, they just need to accomplish a limited tactical or operational objective and get away. A Rebellion is victorious when it survives.
Not to mention, immediately after that battle, Rogue Squadron conducted a series of raids and attacks which torpedoed the empire’s progress. Members of Han Solo’s renegade squadron uncovered numerous imperial plots plus the rich, powerful and beloved Lando joins he rebellion with his entire planet by his side which was rich in resources. If anything the Empire woke up another sleeping giant in the rebellion.
@@jack6126 thankfully the surviving members of Rogue Squadron took action and raided key imperial bases. And they gained a powerful new ally in Lando Calloresian
I think you have a decent point here. It was definitely a defeat for Rebels, just not the total defeat the Empire was hoping for. The Rebels survived, though the fleet was very badly scattered with the Empire hunting down the Rebels. Without a central base the Rebels became separated and unorganised, with the fleet scattered and unable to communicate with each other the Rebels came very close to defeat.
Damn. Another defeat for the Rebels. Honestly, I don't know if they can keep going like this. They already are incredibly limited on resources, and now, they are on a constant retreat losing even more against the industrial and military juggernaut that is the Empire. Honestly, I don't really think they can win this war. Only another victory of the scale of the destruction of the Death Star could save them. Something like, for example, killing the Emperor. But it's unlikely he will leave Corusant for any reason, and after the lost of most of their spies on the capital planet, it's even more unprobable the Rebels can get near him again. So I don't see how that can get to happen neither.
Nitpick on Death Squadron: the core formation was a dreadnought and FIVE Star Destroyers, that were usually Devastator, Avenger, Tyrant, Conquest, and Stalker (though the ships were cycled: Stalker wasn't at Hoth, having been temporarily replaced by Ultimatum... That was then forced to spend some time in a shipyard after repeated asteroid impacts took down the shields and destroyed the bridge tower). I say CORE formation because the full strength of Death Squadron was 33 Imperial-class Star Destroyers, 3 Tector-class, 2 battlecruisers of unspecified design, at least two Victory-class Star Destroyers, at least two Immobilizer-class interdictors, and many smaller ships of multiple types. Darth Vader simply usually kept with him only the Executor and five Star Destroyers, with the other ships being deployed elsewhere or with the main formation as needed. The only time the full force of Death Squadron was deployed in combat at once was the Battle of Endor, and we all know what happened that day.
Great video. I'd love to see you do some breakdowns of the old EU cannon battles. The X-Wing novels, the Thrawn trilogy, New Jedi Order, Legacy of the Force series, and other books have some great campaigns and battles.
This video isn’t that accurate to the movie. Unless someone is using some revisionist Star Wars lore. The AT-AT numbers are wrong, Veers wasn’t injured, Vader didn’t blow up the shield generator (veers did), skywalker destroyed the AT-AT with a thermal grenade, not CPT so and so.
"All troops will debark for ground assault. Prepare to target the main generator." "Distance to power generators?" "Yes Lord Vader, I've reached the main power generators. The shield will be down in moments. You may start your landing." "Target. Maximum Firepower!" -General Veers.
Great video! I was always wondering how the imperial troops landed those ATATs and traversed the frozen tundra of Hoth. I think that could be a fascinating story all its own. Thanks for sharing.
Executor class star dreadnaught named…The Executer? No wonder they didn’t consider “no life signs” doesn’t mean the pod is definitely empty, not the most creative bunch
@@seanahmed9079 that was rude but anyways the ion cannon has limited power and needs time to recharge so it could only hit one destroyer as that poses a big threat while the walkers were far easier to take down also the blast radius of the ion cannon shooting the walker would be so close to the ground that it would also possibly shut down some rebel ships and tech also making it a bad choice for anti at at defense
Every Imperial who celebrated the Victory at Hoth forgot an important lesson about a guerrilla army: “The conventional army loses if it does not win. The guerrilla wins if he does not lose.”
What Hoth did was show how big in scale the Empire was. It implied this was just one imperial force, and that if the rebels were ever caught in one place they'd be shot to pieces I also know the exact book you guys used as a reference and it is one of my prize possessions
Corona Squadron of the Rebellion also did some action during the battle, Corona Squadron Thane Kyrell and Yendor were able to incapacitate a walker by targeting its ankle.
It is a nicely done presentation. However, there are some errors. First, we see the snow troopers advance on foot ahead of the AT ATs. That is not what we see in the movie and the purpose of the AT AT are as troop transports, not tanks. In the movie we hear General Veers order the troops to disembark for ground assault, so in the movie the troops are on the ground just outside of the rebel base. Further, the shield power generators are shown to be blown up by an Advanced TIE interceptor, later indicated to be Lord Vader's vessel. In the movie there are no air assets flown by the Empire, and the power generators are targeted and destroyed by the AT AT commandeered by general Veers. And in showing the AT AT losses, credit is given to colonel Starcks for disabling an AT AT with a thermic grenade. This surely must be the incidence where Luke Skywalker, after having crashed his snow speeder, managed to get a thermal detonator inside the hull of the AT AT that trampled his downed snow speeder. In the summary it sounds as Lord Vader was to blame for the escape of the rebel forces due to no scouting of the area and poor blockade. But Lord Vader had no other choice. Using time to scout the area before launching an attack would have given time for the rebels to evacuate even more of their forces before the ground attack commenced. As for the blockade, Vader used all vessels in his task force for the blockade, except for those used to transfer troops and vehicles for the ground assault. What helped the rebels escape was the hubris and ineptitude of the Star Destroyer commanders, and that they did not know the danger posed by the rebel's ion cannon.

I can't help noticing that Vader does literally nothing in this engagement. He failed to destroy half of the transports despite having an entire fleet of star destroyers, the Executer alone would have overwhelmed the Rebel base. Why didn't the Emperor execute him for failing to destroy the rebellion here?
Vader's "relentless search?" On your map, you have HOTH, right next to Mustafar, Vader's chosen home system. So, Vader would have to be really inept not to notice this.
True, but I guarantee he use this to his advantage and I mentioned that also, but at least the rebels should’ve kind of known this was Vader’s home I don’t know why they picked Hoth. In my opinion, they deserve the title of epic fail.

they didn't quite know Vader's personal fortress was at Mustafar. The Empire sent probe droids everywhere, even the planets they had occupied.- Hoth was as unlikely as anywhere for a base to be placed, so the Rebels put it there. Space in Star Wars isn't like in Star Trek- ships have to travel in hyperspace lanes or risk flying through fields of rock and debris or even stars. Even though Hoth is close to Mustafar, one doesn't just jump from Mustafar.
You should have included the Wampa attack, as that was another third army of the battle, unseen in the film. Still appeared in the Star Wars Trilogy arcade game tho
@@steelshanks1265 Exactly. Their idea of writing strong female characters is to make the male characters, goofy, inept and comic relief (Hulk). I was done when I saw Endgame, and I have no interest in Black Panther 2.
You should go over Prequel Trilogy battles (both from the films and The Clone Wars), Sequels to show why they don't work (especially Exogol) and Legends as well
Thanks, I enjoyed that! I'm not surprised Veers found the Rebels competent as the Imperial Army was a joke. How about air cover for the walkers? 50 TIE-fighters and 12 bombers? Of course not.
I didn’t realize Hoth was so close to Mustafar that likely means the rebels had scouting missions to both Fortress Inquisitorius on Nur as well as Vaders Castle

It was. This video is stupid.
Even in my elder years , I love it . I'm such a tragic for the tale brought forth in the 1970's till todays time and space .
The series so far is very well detailed and informative. After the galactic civil war, I would love to see the clone wars in full detail, for I can only imagine how amazing that would be.
Great movie and a great battle to cover for this channel, keep up the great work guys 👍
You were less stupid as a kid, FYI.
“Hoth? HOTH?? A bazillion planets to find a base for us, and you had to pick the coldest? Does this ice cube even ORBIT a star for some heat? Wtf, Luke?”
I like how fantasy battles are more interesting to some people than actual battles.
which is so wrong. theyre ultra boring
Tactically it was a victory for the empire
Strategically it was a victory for the rebellion
Are we going to see Endor? And I'd love to watch a Battlestar Galactica video....Ragnar Anchorage, First Cylon War, New Caprica...
Imagine this channel doing the campaigns and battles from legend of the galactic heroes
They got their asses kicked😂😂😂 so yeah 😊
Imperial tactical victory, Rebel strategic victory. Though it still did a lot of damage to the Alliance.
Was so cool seeing the introduction of the AT-ST chicken walker, albeit for a brief 3 seconds?
Amazing work! Look forward to the 40k battles!
Oh I've been waiting for this one!
Finally more starwars content
I love seeing these videos each and every time. Please no 6+month waits for the next!
Vader executing Ozzel was a long time coming.
And well deserved. Vader might have utterly crushed the Rebels that day had he been given time to cordon the system...
He was careless as he.was stupid. 😃😃
Finally some Star Wars
Great video. I'd love to see you do some breakdowns of the old EU cannon battles. The X-Wing novels, the Thrawn trilogy, New Jedi Order, Legacy of the Force series, and other books have some great campaigns and battles.
Great video guys! I was wondering are there any plans to cover Star Trek or StarGate?
I could watch a whole movie on the battle of Hoth!
Veers was canonically injured, the scene was just cut from the movie
It’s so cool hearing this in an Imperial Core Worlds accent.
"All troops will debark for ground assault. Prepare to target the main generator."
"Distance to power generators?"
"Yes Lord Vader, I've reached the main power generators. The shield will be down in moments. You may start your landing."
"Target. Maximum Firepower!"
-General Veers.
"Target. Maximum Firepower!"
*KABOOM*
Back when Empire came out, we called the walkers At-Ats, not A-T-A-Ts. I don't know when that changed.
Same, but I’m guessing when the STs became a thing.
Because it sounds stupid and nothing else in the franchise is pronounced like that
Just found you. This the most concise battle revue I have ever seen. Perfection.
Here is the earth equivalent the battle for the north pole and south pole if you’re daring enough
Great video! I was always wondering how the imperial troops landed those ATATs and traversed the frozen tundra of Hoth. I think that could be a fascinating story all its own. Thanks for sharing.
Hoth? There isn’t enough life on that ice cube to fill a space cruiser
This is quite entertaining. Gonna find more of these!
The shield generator was destroyed by Veers
I hope you guys cover the reunification of the Rebel Divisons next!
Hoth!?
Should've called it; "Coldth"!! 😁
_(ba dum dum PSSSSH 🥁)_
I don't know why they call it Hoth, they should call it Coldth.
Executor class star dreadnaught named…The Executer?
No wonder they didn’t consider “no life signs” doesn’t mean the pod is definitely empty, not the most creative bunch
Unless it's a French vessel, you're bound to find the namesake for an entire class eventually... Except for Imperial-Class Star Destroyers, of course.
Loving the Star Wars content. Keep it up 😊
they should have used the ion canon on some of the walkers
No
@@seanahmed9079 that was rude but anyways the ion cannon has limited power and needs time to recharge so it could only hit one destroyer as that poses a big threat while the walkers were far easier to take down also the blast radius of the ion cannon shooting the walker would be so close to the ground that it would also possibly shut down some rebel ships and tech also making it a bad choice for anti at at defense
Verry happy to see some Star Wars book appretation with this video. Great job, guys!👍
I think you guys could kill a video describing the Battle of Reach from the Halo Series.
Did I miss Luke taking down an AT/AT on foot with a grenade?
This is all why The Battle Of Hoth should get its own movie.
Small discrepancy ...Veers destroyed the generator with his AT-AT not Vader
This is a masterpiece 👏
Rebels: When in doubt. KAMIKAZE!!!!!!!
Here you are again with a great episode... Keep it coming... 👍🏻👍🏻
After this series, as I have commented in your first video, a hypothetical reality show for the silver screen: _Star Trek vs Star Wars_ …
Why did you show the shield generator being taken out by Vader's tie fighter?
Right. General Veers took it down as the rebel troops were retreating.
Thanks so much for this star wars series! Can't wait for the battle of sullust!
Yes! So happy to hear you’re going to do more videos like this!
You guys should cover the battles from the Chronicles of Narnia
Aslan wins
Every Imperial who celebrated the Victory at Hoth forgot an important lesson about a guerrilla army:
“The conventional army loses if it does not win. The guerrilla wins if he does not lose.”
What Hoth did was show how big in scale the Empire was. It implied this was just one imperial force, and that if the rebels were ever caught in one place they'd be shot to pieces
I also know the exact book you guys used as a reference and it is one of my prize possessions
Out of interest which book was it? Given it seriously retconned the Empire Strikes Back movie and novelization.
Corona Squadron of the Rebellion also did some action during the battle, Corona Squadron Thane Kyrell and Yendor were able to incapacitate a walker by targeting its ankle.
I suggest the battle of Antarctica from the Stargate series.
Twenty nights in the ice is a long time
When there's Hostiles On The Hill
It's not about what they want
You just gotta walk your walk
Twenty nights in the ice is a long time
When there's Hostiles On The Hill
It's not about what you wear
It's all about where you are
Thank you! It was worth the wait! 🤠👍
It is space. You don't check every planet, there are too many.
True, but I guarantee he use this to his advantage and I mentioned that also, but at least the rebels should’ve kind of known this was Vader’s home I don’t know why they picked Hoth. In my opinion, they deserve the title of epic fail.
The closer we are to danger, the farther we are from harm. It's the last thing he'll expect.
@@WizardsandWarriors May I see a complete Clone Wars timeline, please? Please also include plenty of space battles and more. I want to hear of Ahsoka Tano, too, please. I would appreciate a reply. Also, what is the music used in the conclusion of this video?
they didn't quite know Vader's personal fortress was at Mustafar.
Nice one guys with amazing graphics and content
The Empire in the OT was not the incompetent joke that it became in later books and now in Disney TV shows.
@@steelshanks1265 Disney ruined Star Wars as they doing now with the MCU.
@@steelshanks1265 Exactly. Their idea of writing strong female characters is to make the male characters, goofy, inept and comic relief (Hulk). I was done when I saw Endgame, and I have no interest in Black Panther 2.
Love to see more stuff from the clone wars and star wars in general
You should go over Prequel Trilogy battles (both from the films and The Clone Wars), Sequels to show why they don't work (especially Exogol) and Legends as well
Man I love this channel nice animations
The lack of rebel AA and artillery to contest the landing was probably the biggest deficiency on their part.
they were not going to last long in a defensive battle against an orbital force. The ion cannon was always going to defend an escape.
You are making the loss look more devastating that it actually was.
Under rated channel
My moment to shine, “Fire Giant Boob Nipple Gun!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
