As a Mechanical Engineer that took a lot of thermodynamics courses the discussion about "cold energy" hurt my brain.... but it did show that clearly a topic on general thermodynamics would be a good one. To answer Jim's question about using cold for energy... yes... sort of. Energy can be turned into work when there's a difference of energy levels. Such as a difference in height, momentum from waves etc. However in the thermodynamics world it's pretty much from a difference in temperature... so if you have a cold environment (reservoir) and a slightly warmer environment (reservoir) you could gain work from that. You really should get someone with a doctorate in thermo on, it is a scientific subject that has a beautiful cosmic balance and meaning to it. In some ways it mirrors religion. Such as the first law of thermodynamics: energy cannot be created or destroyed. Or as mentioned earlier to harness energy you typically need both an abundance and absence of energy (sort of like yin and yang, good and evil).
Oversimplified way to explain is that while heat is energy, cold is an absence of heat so there's no energy in it. I understand there could still be a way to play with ΔTemperature but let's not get ahead of ourselves and focus on Archaeopteryx instead.
"so if you have a cold environment (reservoir) and a slightly warmer environment (reservoir) you could gain work from that." Correct me if im wrong but how i see this we would get energy from the warmer environment. So we wouldnt tap into the cold at all, its still the heath energy that would be turned into electricity. So Jim is looking in the wrong corner or holding the map upside down kinda.
@@sdmoparmaninsd6713 Sure. But the energy is not actually coming from the cold side. The cold part of it is just needed for the process but its not the source itself.

The issue is that regular people can't afford solar. Let all the rich people get it first and then then price should come down. Saying that though in some instances over here (England) you can get solar panels fitted to council houses for free. (Council house is like a very cheap (compared to normal) house that the government rents to people who are in bad situations, way too much to explain in a YT comment).
48:45 - I remember hearing about a company years ago that wanted to do energy storage with ice - it would make ice when power demand/prices were low and then that would be used for air conditioning when demand and prices were high. Pretty sure batteries just whupped its ass though.
Theoretically, cold is just an absence of energy. That being said, there is probably a way to use the change in temperature into cause some reaction but nothing significant

Hello from Portugal. I've met this amazing girl, from Michigan, in a mobile game, after a few months of chatting online, last week out of an impulse, we decided to meet up in London (England) for the weekend. We spent 3 incredible days in a hotel room having the most outrageous sex and in between "takes" we would stream Jim's specials. Looking forward for our meet and greet with Jim and to share with him our crazy story. 3 days in London, having sex and binging Jim's specials.

Jim, while you can't technically energize a system by cold as "cold" is a description of a lack of "heat" energy, peltier units, sterling engines, thermocouples, and other devices can run off of a temperature difference. I run my Sterling engine off of ice cubes all of the time. It's technically running off of ambient heat in the room but the ice can be thought of as a fuel(inaccurate, but easier to understand) because it is the only thing that is consumed by the engine in lay mans terms. So yes, you can use the cold to power things. I do it all the time.
