- To celebrate Rocky Bleier's birthday, here is the story behind Rocky's longest run, as told by Joe Greene.
"Rocky was SLOW. One of the stories that he shared with us was that he always wanted to be fast enough so that when he ran, his hair would blow in the wind. And one day, he had a breakaway... and he said he felt the wind blowing in his hair."
This is that play.
Oct. 7, 1979, Cleveland Municipal Stadium (Steelers 51, Browns 35)

Served in Vietnam, lost half his foot and then plays running back in the NFL. Not sure they make them like that anymore. Salute Rocky Bleier.
Yeah I heard that he had nothing but scar tissue where the instep would have been.
He'd be in practice in obvious pain and Art Rooney would have tears in his eyes for what R.B. was going through and how hard he worked to make the team.
Tough as nails , American Hero ...
Then ya got Scottie Pippen refusing to come off the bench at the end of a timeout cuz he wasn't penciled in to take the last shot, for comparison.
Art Rooney stuck with him...Rocky did the rest
They never made 'em like Rock, ..... Pride of Appleton Xavier High School.
Rocky always will be a hero of mine not just because he was a Steeler but a wounded veteran of the Vietnam War.
But he's White and everybody knows that White people are racist oppressors.
And he's a Wisconsin guy!
America needs leaders like Rock
I felt the same way for both reasons. This Era Steelers is my favorite team of all time. Absolutely.
AND Notre Dame!❤
The Rock served his Country, then came home for an encore. What a guy!
Shrapnel wounds on August 20th, 1969.
A Notre Damer. One of my favorite ever players.
It was a good thing he did go back to the Steelers, their doctors pulled more shrapnel out of one of his legs.
He was told he would never play after his war injuries. He showed them different didn’t he. A real man.
According to a made-for-tv movie on his life and career, Robert Urich played him, he botched an attempt to dodge the draft. Not knocking him; nobody believed in that war.
Just met Rocky tonight and got to wear his 4 rings. He is a great man with a great soul.
Salt of the earth, for sure. 👍🏻
My brother and his wife got to do the same thing a few years ago. Great picture with a great person.
That's probably the fastest he's ever ran, one of the greatest stories in sports history. Remember the doctor said he would never walk again after being shot in Vietnam.
Our brother Rocky Blier will never be forgotten. The true ALL American football player.
Rock was the heart and soul of the team in the 1970s. He was an essential ingredient in our dynasty.
That might be a bit of a stretch. The team was loaded with HOF players
Hearing Don Criqui’s voice again gives me the warm fuzzies. I watched so many games that he called back when I was a kid. One of the best!
I was very fortunate to be able to spend a day with Rocky in the late 1980s. I worked for Westinghouse at the time and Rocky was speaking at a company gathering. As a VP of the company I was asked to pick him up at the airport and shepherd him during the day. The stories he told about Terry were hilarious. He was real and very down-to-earth. It was a very enjoyable day.
A TRUE PATRIOT! RAISE YOUR KIDS TO HAVE THE QUALITIES OF ROCKY!
2nd Greatest Story Ever Told!!!
There goes the best man to play NFL football 🏈!!! Limping, yet still outrunning everyone to the end zone on his 60% disabled body!
And yet I know people without dignity enough to work for a living, claiming a mental disorder for full benefits, here is the best man!
Very poor tackling and no line backers or Safety on that play made it easy for him
You sound very ignorant of mental disorders
@@kasheem1747At least he didn't fumble like Dorsett
@@richardcarden4161 Or Walter Payton
Gee. I wonder if any of those 'people without dignity' actually do have a mental disorder. Hmmmm..... Nah, they are ALL just faking it.
Looked like he was.limping the whole time and still couldn't be caught. Amazing dude. I hated the steelers back then, but I respected a lot of their players.
I love this period of football.
I grew up a Cowboys fan. The Steelers were always hard to beat, and guys
like Rocky Bleier were the reason. Best wishes to you.
I love the nostalgia. It takes me back where you hear disco at the end; the Trammps Disco inferno!
Agreed! What a great era of football. I love the, "I want to run fast enough to feel the wind blow in my hair," story behind this play, too. LOL.
The best of times in the 70s
@@mcmillenandwife sup tim micmillen I'm subbed to you can you pls make a vid ranking big Ben's top ten wide receivers he's played with and a vid ranking his top ten running backs he's played with cuz he's retired now and he also had so much good weapons in the past
I read his book, Fighting Back, in the late 1970s. Loved watching him play.
You can probably find that movie too.
terrific book
I'm not really a book reader unless it's a biography or autobiography and usually of athletes. This book kept me interested throughout. It's amazing how he came from being wounded in Vietnam to playing running back in the NFL. GREAT BOOK and a HUMBLE MAN 🏈 🇺🇸 .
I saw that game live. I think Rocky ran 58 yards on 3rd and 1.
I consider it a privilege to have watched Rocky's career. If I ever meet him I'm going to thank him for the hundreds of moments of pure joy watching him and Franco play.
Didn't Franco have a long TD run that same game?
@@Devous7114 Yes. Franco was only in the game for a few carries. I think his 2nd carry went for 70 or72 yards!
The one thing that I love about this run is that he never looked behind him. He just looked for the goal line! 😎
Prefect. No spiking the football or dancing in the end zone. Rocky was and is a class act.
Emmit Smith the former Cowboys RB stated that Great Onea don't dance because they know they'll return to the end zone
Even if you're not a Steeler fan you gotta love Rocky Bleier..dude is a combat vet,..a man's man, very classy and good to people..tough as nails -had a horrible injury from Viet war that still didn't prevent him from also becoming a pretty good NFL football player😎👍🏽
Regardless of whatever team you support Rocky Bleier is an absolute hero. Kudos to the Rooney family for supporting their guy, the Steelers are a class act. .Go Hawks
I was at his last home game. The crowd chanted, "Rocky, Rocky, Rocky" for the the entire game when the Steelers were on offense.
I watched this game from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. . My brothers and I, along with my best friend, went down to the gorge that morning for a hike. We didn't get back until the end of the 1st quarter. The Steelers were already crushing CLE, 27-0 LOL....Then the Browns made it a really good game. They actually cut this lead to 44-35 in the 4th. Then Pittsburgh scored to seal it, 51-35. I'll never forget watching this. And listen to that Steeler faithful. They always represented big time at Cleveland. Great rivalry.
it goes Teddy Roosevelt, Rocky Bleier, jack lambert, ted Hendricks.... the toughest, best men worth looking up to anywhere in the past two hundred years lol .. What an archetype for the rest of us to follow, Veteran, star, hard working S.O.B
A Man's Man!
Rocky was always one of my favorite Steelers.Grit and determination was his mantra and he was never expected to make it because of his war injuries. Can't recall if they ever made a movie about his life, but they should have.
Rocky was a warrior on and off the field!
I love the Immaculate Reception, but this is my Favorite Steeler Memory.....in Cleveland on their Field! It's the best thing comin' you way today.....Wooooooo!💪
Agreed, one of my all-time favorite games!
The last game of the season this year 79' the Steelers won again in a close high scoring game. Remember the Steelers had over 600 yards and the poor Browns defense couldn't stop them at all but Brian Sipe and Co. Kept it close. Cleveland had a great offense but no defense.
Awesome, 1 of the Greatest stories of the Greatest Team Ever! Chief was proud of that 1 for sure!
I see him on local commercial a lot down here in the burgh.
Underrated for sure. Rocky certainly was a key cog in their offence.
There will never be a greater steelers player to wear number 20 I'm a die hard steelers fan at 71 years young love our Pittsburgh steelers always and 4ever
Hated the Steelers, but always loved and respected the Rock
I remember this like it was yesterday!
I’ve never been a Steelers fan, but; I’ve always liked certain players on their team. Rocky Blier is one of them. They guy was what a football player should be at any position.
I was born & raised in Cleveland and remember watching this game at home. Old municipal stadium and old Three Rivers stadium in Pittsburgh always hosted some of the "best" exitibitions of Football in history. Two storied NFL teams with a rich & traditional Football pedigree.
That was the browns steelers rivalry back in the day tough hard fought games usually came down to the end how exciting that was
Yuck and uuwe I would not to live in Cleveland or Pittsburgh. Btw I like Americas team and I know you know who that is!
I absolutely love this. I haven't heard much from Rock, lately. I hope he is doing well.
I am from s/e Kentucky & most of us are steelers fans as well as w.virginia, rocky was a great running back, played his heart out
#52 made that happen. RIP IRON MIKE!!!
Yes! And both are Wisconsin men too!
Always solid as a rock, another hall of fame steeler, thanks rocky.
Gotta love " The Rock"
Thank you Rocky
Not yer brake away open field type back so that one was sweet…rocky must have been like…am I back in high school? Is this a dream 😴
2 back set with double tight ends, I miss smash mouth football.
I was at this game. This was one time I really wished I was a Steelers fan. This would have been the highlight of my life as a fan.
A a real man and a true American Hero...
Great find!!
He can move pretty good for having a bad wheel.
Tough guy and a hero.
A Bronze Star for saving a buddy, a Purple Heart for being shot and 4 Super Bowl rings. “The Man” amongst men.
44 points?? That takes 3 and half games for us to reach that total now! The good ole days!!
I missed the game, but I remember as a little boy that evening seeing this clip in the news on TV the next day.
Met him today at Naples Fla St Pats day parade ... he was Grand Marshal !!!! Aweosme
I'm so glad and lucky I lived there and watched the steelers win those first 4 super bowls.
I lived on the West side of Green Bay, Wisconsin when I was a kid. Bleier played high school football for Appleton Xavier high school, which I think went out of business, as many Catholic schools have. Xavier was in the same conference with Green Bay Premontre, which was also a Catholic high school. When Xavier played at Premontre during Bleier’s time in high school, we all heard the 1:06 PA feed coming from Premontre’s stadium, which was about a mile away. For two hours on autumn Saturdays, it was “Bleier on the carry, good for a first down. … Bleier carries for 20 to the Premontre 10, first and goal. Bleier on the touchdown.” All afternoon it was Bleier this and Bleier that. A remarkable kid turned into a remarkable man. Enjoyed watching him with the Steelers; they had a great dynasty in the 1970s.
Great story, thanks for sharing! 👍🏻👍🏻🖤💛
From a Browns fan: Respect.
Wow, impressive run.
I met Mr. Blier about a year ago in DC for veterans event. Had good solid chat for maybe half hour one and one. Told him, he, along with the other Vietnam vets were my heroes and still are. Cool gent.
In this video highlight, I noticed on Steelers sideline, the player Steve Furness, RIP.
He died of dehydration falling into a pit of sand somewhere in the Grand Canyon during the summer, which he couldn't climb out of. On Arizona news, sad day learning of it.
All time favorite STEELA!!!!
I remember this! Thanks so much for sharing this, it made my day!
Can’t get enough of the Rock!
Great block by Thorton, #38.
It really was! I never noticed it before, but you can HEAR him hit that guy.
My favorite Steeler on the field was Jack Lambert, but my favorite human being on the team was Rocky Bleier.
I miss those days!
The only greater play EVER was the “Immaculate Reception”. Period. Rocky B. earned his pay that day and my respect. SALUTE !
I served India 3/4. Good to see Rocky make it!
I remember watching that run on live tv.
Just something about hearing a sporting event called by Don Criqui -- makes me nostalgic.
I wanna say I saw that live back in the day …..
Man I really miss old school NFL Football 🏈 I really do👍
yes sir. Mr.Bleier. Well done.
WTG Rocko!
60’s-70’s-80’s NFL games were the best
Man, this takes me back. Especially when you add the "Disco Inferno" music!
Way to go Rocky. THE SARGE
That’s back when football was fun to watch. I miss those days.
I was at this game. I was sitting in the end zone (behind home plate). He ran straight toward me. I remember it well!
The NFL has produced no greater champion than Rocky Bleier. He ennobled the game.
Thanks for sharing the memory.
Almost as great a "slow guy" run as Andy Russell's fumble return in the playoffs against Bert Jones and the Colts.
That run didn’t look slow to me. Rocky had jets.
I was drafted out of law school in 1968, and Rocky was drafted too that year
I remember watching this play on television.
I'll never forget that touchdown catch he made in Super Bowl Xlll he went to the moon to get that ball
Rocky, one of the Greatest Steelers of all time, for sure!
The greatest ever don criqui
in cleveland, no less. i can still hear my father's shouts of celebration echoing in my skull 44 years later.
And everybody in the Stadium, including the Browns, knew what was coming, and they still couldn't stop it.
Bob Criqui. What a great broadcaster.
It’s Don Criqui but yeah, my favorite announcer.
That moment when you realize you misspelled "municipal" at the start of your video. 🙄 Dammit...
couldn't you fix it? ,lol...
😂
Brings me back. GREAT Steeler TEAMS. HOUSTON always hanging around. RAIDERS. MIAMI. GOOD Football......
The only real Rocky 🐐 ❤️
Rocky on the sidelines after the run 'I need a smoke' now that was football😄
IMHO, the best blocking back of his era. How good was he, really? He and Franco each had a 1,000 yard season---in the same season!
Rocky Bleier's story is one of the greatest stories in NFL history. None of today's spoiled players could ever go what he went through and still make it in the NFL.
None of them? Ever heard of Alex Smith? I guess not.
Not a big Stillers fan, but I like to remember him as a Notre Dame boy.
Inspirational
Rocky Bleier. Wasn't the fastest, or the biggest, or the strongest. All he did was win.
I recall watching this game of TV. The Steelers would score a bunch of point, and the Browns would come back. Then they'd score another bunch of point, and the Browns would come back. The Brownies never took the lead, but every time it looked like the Steelers had put the game away, Cleveland would come back and make it close.
That was when Pittsburgh-Cleveland was one of the best rivalries going (and one of the funny things about Steelers-Browns is that there haven't been all that many times when both teams were really good at the same time)....along with Steelers-Raiders and Steelers-Cowboys. The only one that equalled these was Steelers-Ravens from the earlier days of the 2000's.
Well, I'll tell you this: he looked like one of the fastest in this clip!
looks pretty dam fast in this clip
I remember seeing that awesome run live, as Rocky exploded right up the middle. Another silencer for the Browns fans and another blowout 😆.
THE ROCK RULES!
Hated the Steelers big time (Raider fan) but always admired Rockey
Rocky was absolutely outstanding. But remember it took Terry Bradshaw to call the right play.
I got his autograph, he's a perfect gentleman 👍
