I’m a musician and so it would be easier to learn things by ear. I’m too old to get true perfect pitch so the closest I can get is relative pitch. Meaning if I memorize C then hear another note I can hear how many semitones it is from C and know what note it is. I hope that makes sense :D
@@piecookies3488 That kind of does. I, too, am a musician and find no need to "pick notes out of the air." I have had a VERY successful career and, believe me, as long as you can sing/play in tune, you don't really need to know the name that people give notes. Your time is MUCH better spent perfecting your craft, not learning "names." my two cents....
@@davidcottrell1308 It's not about what it does for your career. It's about loving music for its own sake and wanting to have as deep a connection with it as possible. Being able to identify pitches by the way they sound isn't just a technical thing. It's the PERCEPTION of those pitches that adds something invaluable to your experience of and connection to music. Each note, each key has a different feeling that you develop an intimate connection with. It does have a functional value as far as your active musicianship is concerned but more than that, it enriches your experience of music.
All my life I've thought perfect pitch was some misty gift some people just had. I'm practicing with this video and before the video try to sing a C then compare to the actual C tone. I will tell you in some weeks if I can be correct evertime. Also want to propose to people to put name of famous songs that starts with a clear C sound... Can you help me
Songs are very often transposed to different keys, AND, even worse, many times musicians will tune instruments BETWEEN Keys. For example, the so-called concert pitch of A being 440 Hz is sometimes changed to 420, or otherwise (and that’s even with a large orchestra!).... Furthermore, if Just Intonation is followed, ALL of the notes WILL change.pitch somewhat depending upon the Key (and the ‘Just’ harmonic interval intended).... The ‘C’ used here I believe is of the 12-Tone Equal Temperament system (12-TET), where ‘A’ is 440 Hz... If you’re going to use songs, make sure the tuning is 12-TET, and use the SAME recording, without pitch alterations (from speed or digital manipulation). You’re also better off choosing simpler songs, played without ‘effects’
Okay so I’ve been listening to this and practice for 2 weeks now and I’m only at a C# or B better than I was before but how long do you think it’ll take before I can get it every time
Thanks for the comment. I was just planning out That concept before I even read your comment and I’m actually going to do it in multiple levels. Stay tuned for an update
@Aidan Fine It depends on what you with it. (BTW I learned with tonedear.com - listening to "imprints" don't help as much, but the constant quizzing forces your brain to actively interact). If you play any kind of tone, I could instantly tell you what pitch its. Violin, electric buzz, piano key, sine-wave, it doesn't matter the kind of sound. Every note now has its own "feel/shape" to it. However, when listening to music, this doesn't work. Even with a relatively slow melody like Nocturne C sharp minor, I am hopeless to tell you any given pitch. Not totally hopeless though, I can still make out "emphasized" notes in songs, just the fast notes in the background are too fast to hear. It's like, when I hear a note in music within the context of a prior note, I can only hear them relative. It's like the absolute pitch part of my brain is shut down when I hear notes in a melody (unless its a slow one). But I can always tell you the pitch of the first/last chord of a song, I just can't tell you the ones in the middle. So if I am in a store, and the cash register machine makes a sound, I can instantly say E flat, and all other sounds around me instantly, it just doesn't help in music unless I am on the one playing the piano.
@@PM-4564 so how much did you practice PP daily, i am really interested in training for relative pitch and heard that tonedear is a good website to start

Anyone watching listen up the only thing this is going to teach you perfect pitchwise is possibly how to hear this lady when she sings C it won't teach you perfect pitch everyone has perfect pitch but so few people can hear it because they can't differentiate between the Timbers of different sounds
Devyn, Thanks for the comment. My goal here is not to teach perfect pitch to adults. Perfect Pitch is unlocked in childhood. Both of my boys have perfect pitch and I teach parents how to unlock this gift. I also tell them that perfect pitch does not mean that you will be a great musician. There are pros and cons to this. My goal here is to help musicians tune in to their sense of pitch using pitch memory. Even people without perfect pitch can hear notes, chords, keys, pitch memory of songs etc, but they often think they can't do this is they don't have perfect pitch. This of course is not true, and in my opinion different timbres actually help with pitch memory. For instance, trumpet players can hum a bflat, guitarists can sing an E string note, or hear a G chord, etc. Thank you again for the comment.
