Hey 皆, thanks for watching this review! Would've had it out release day, but work intervened. I think at some point I'll want to revisit Godzilla Minus One and see if I enjoy it more - I think part of my negative feelings stem from comparisons with Godzilla's best features. I would like to make a video on Shin Godzilla as well at some point - so much to talk about with that one.

I kind of went into it expecting disappointment but I was genuinely pleased by how well the story was told. I think this is the first time I've watched a Godzilla movie and really gotten the point that the creature was inspired by nuclear warfare. The atomic breath was a clear representation of the bombing incase the big lizard's destruction didn't spell it out enough for you.
It was definitely good to see the consequences of war through the simple lives of a handful of seemingly unremarkable people. Their simplicity made them easy to understand. It wasn't about a group of buerocrats sat in an office trying to figure out which nameless person to kill off in style. It made it a point to indicate that there's a connection between the characters because they belong to a community and when one dies when mourn them.
Keeping it a human story made it more relatable and the cheesiest part was the cgi at times but I was too invested to really care. I understand you want shin Godzilla but that's already been made and it doesn't have a lot of depth.
As for the inaccuracy of the time period, I didn't notice until you mentioned it and most people didn't too as evidenced by the comments because they were just watching the movie not analysing it for its factual consistency when the main villain is a giant lizard that breathes atomic breath and is practically invincible. Some details will be warped to emphasise context of the story but for what it's worth, I'm very happy with it.

I couldn't do anything with the main character and therefore with the people's story. His over-the-top acting and self-destructive behavior towards the end and the lack of empathetic scenes with his "family" meant that I didn't care about him or her at all. Apart from the boat scene, the dramaturgical structure until Godzilla appears is also missing; he often appears suddenly and disappears again just as quickly. Maybe after 40 Godzilla films and the hype leading up to it, I expected too much. I'm happy for everyone who celebrates this film so much. For me the only thing left is the spectacular Atomicbreath.

This is the first negative review i have seen and when it comes to the movie overall, everyone else is saying the exact opposite of what this review is saying, people say that the story is really good with well written characters and emotional moments that don't really feel melodramatic plus they all say Godzilla is an absolute monster full of rage and hate in this movie. But in the end of course not everyone will like the movie, everyone is different, alot of people may find this to be a fantastic movie while others will find it boring, stupid, or dumb. Not every movie will have high praise reviews only without negative reviews that i guess do act as a counterbalance, even the ones regardes as the best movies to be released, such as Endgame for example are loved by many many people but are not loved by everyone, In the end you cannot make everyone happy. For those on the fence about this movie after seeing the review? Just wait for the movie to release, go watch it yourself and formulate YOUR OWN OPINION, I see people in the comments not really wanting to watch it now because of one negative review by someone else who did not like it, don't go with a hive mindset that "these people did not like this movie, so i just won't watch it". I always view reviews as a way to know where to keep your expectations at but not to decide for you, at the end of the day, reviews are still the opinions of other people. They just say how they feel about it, not to decide whether or not you should see it. You decide that for yourself, my only recommendation is to honestly give movies a try as you will never know that you may end up liking the movie. What is not someone else's cup of tea, may be your cup of tea. Overall I will probably end up loving it. i have waited a whole year since its announcement and im still looking forward to it in December. Most reviews i have seen are by people who loved it.

The negative reviews are interesting. It is likely that the Japanese felt that the presence of Americans (GIs) in Tokyo just after the war was over was a very sensitive portrayal for the Japanese, and that it would detract from the simplicity of the film, so they eliminated them altogether. The fact that so many poor women donated their bodies to GIs still evokes a strong sense of inferiority in the Japanese. (The pampan, of which the protagonist speaks briefly, is a prostitute for GI's.) (The protagonist talks a little about pampans, which are prostitutes for GIs, in the context of the hardships of life.) ) The protagonist also does not express any feelings toward the United States. This may be due to consideration for the U.S. market.

I'm glad I waited until I saw the movie for myself before watching your review. While I did have a great time at the movie, I agree with a lot of your points here Noah. My Godzilla-loving side was really clashing with my interest in Japanese post-war politics for Minus One, and they really squandered that great postwar setting. One could imagine a different film where the US was a more present force, perhaps trying to cover up Godzilla's rampage to shift blame from their Bikini Atoll testing. All of the heroism associated with kamikaze fighters also leaves a really bad taste in my mouth, when the film concludes you get the impression that Koichi's main struggle wasn't because he was sent to die by Japan, but it was that he failed to do so and still live.
Regardless, I'm happy this film seems to be resonating with people, especially over here in the states. I hope this movie can help expand Godzilla's media influence here and bring more attention to this era. Regardless, I'll think of Godzilla Minus One as one of the more popcorn entertainment movies of the series. It sure as hell ain't no Godzilla 1954 or Shin Godzilla, but it's a fun watch with friends.

  • @ShinGhidorah17
    @ShinGhidorah17 5 месяцев назад +8

This movie was so disappointing. I have my own reasons of why I don’t like it:
It felt like the film didn’t have enough of what I wanted to see. The film was way too quick. Some scenes felt too quick. It didn’t feel complete to me. The scenes with Godzilla went too quickly. The destruction of the city happened too early. Too few scenes of Godzilla.
Godzilla felt like he had the least amount of screen time I’ve ever seen in a modern live action Godzilla film, even more so than Godzilla 2014 and Shin Godzilla.
The CGI on Godzilla was very mediocre. Maybe even awful. At times he moved very stiff and cartoonish. The rendering and compositing ranged from mediocre to awful, especially at the beginning in Godzilla’s early form, which looked pretty bad on the big screen. Some of the CGI looked like fanmade Godzilla animations on RUclips. One of the only realistic CGI I could find was the close up of a naval mine in Godzilla’s mouth in one scene.
By the way, Shin Godzilla had a lower budget than Godzilla Minus One, yet the CGI in Shin Godzilla was MUCH BETTER.
This movie felt like it gave me half of what I wanted in a Godzilla movie. I absolutely love the concept of Godzilla in WW2 or post WW2 fighting the military. This film KINDA gave me that, but not nearly enough of it.
Another minor issue (nitpick) I had was that the plan to defeat Godzilla scene happened a bit too early. I was hoping that Godzilla would fight more military before they came with this plan.
Calling this one of the best Godzilla movies ever is an overstatement.
There are many more problems I have. The film’s tone is not nearly depressing as I wanted it to be. Not enough disturbing imagery. Not as much dead corpses as I wanted. Not enough gore. And the worst aspect: it’s not even R Rated. So this is definitely not the dream Godzilla movie I was really hoping for it to be.
This did not at all feel like a worthy successor to the original 1954 film.
The tone of the film was not as dark and depressing as it should’ve been.
If a Godzilla film doesn’t make the audience coming out of the theatre feeling disturbed and/or depressed, like with the original, then it’s not a TRUE Godzilla film.
Maybe you felt emotion, but I did not. I never shed a tear throughout the whole movie. If this movie were to be as dark and depressing/disturbing as the original, if not even more, you know what Takashi Yamazaki would do:
Have Godzilla kill off the child (Akiko) or any/all of the people that Koichi was connected with, therefore making Koichi more depressed and angry, as well as the audience. To do it ONSCREEN would enhance that further.
Noriko should’ve died and stayed dead instead of appearing at the end with some dumb infection on her neck.
Heck, Koichi would die as well, by being getting radiation poisoning from Godzilla, therefore making the audience even more depressed since we ourselves connected with him.
That is what would make this closer in tone to the original than it already is.
But nope. It didn’t turn out that way.
I had REALLY high expectations. I expected it to be just as gritty and disturbing as the original if not more, but it wasn’t! I truly believe that people will watch this film again and again, in the future, and will start to see more of its flaws. The same flaws that I see.
Overall, Godzilla Minus One was a MAJOR disappointment.
    I rate this film a 4/10.

I'm coming here late and i just recently watched minus one on Netflix. I have the same opinion as yours. The movie did not feel like japan is on the verge of extinction considering the setting. The main cast did not die. The movie felt too safe. The setting of this movie was a wasted potential. They could've shown us a really dark and depressing chapter of japan with godzilla sprinkled on top of it but they didn't lol.
The majority of the film is just filled with 'hope', I don't mind it but too much results in a movie that feels emotionally flat. Let me see the characters die and suffer, let them react to it, and in the end give them the hope that they are wishing for a better emotional impact. After seeing it, I'm starting to worry about the mental health of everyone who has praised this film. Especially the ones that were mentioned on Minus One's Wikipedia page. This was boring, BORING storytelling with a lot of stock or borrowed visuals from distant past films like Jaws. With the exception of some human performances, there's nothing about this film that wows. It's gotten too meta as well, to the point where every time the named Godzilla is mentioned, audiences are expected to cheer like the applause sign at live shows.
You know why the 1954 original remains the best? It came out at the right time, it was dark, brutal and used nothing but practical effects. But most of all, it was shortly after WWII ended. You feel its message a lot more, especially when Serizawa sees the devastation Godzilla left behind and makes his ultimate decision...leading to his sacrifice. That was movie magic, and Toho putting all their eggs into their basket. So much so that no Godzilla or kaiju movie will ever come remotely close. Only the 1933 King Kong stands as it's equal.

I feel like the movie was ok, maybe even below that a little. Godzilla moved like a doll, and the characters are so predictable. I predicted the whole movie right when they said the word "kamikaze". Good review and thanks for being one of the few voices not just following the herd.
I still think this is a very good movie and a good addition to the Godzilla collection but it has been so overhyped as a perfect movie.
It is certainly not as meaningful as the original or Shin but I don't think it has to try to be. Those 2 have their own place in the Godzilla canon but one of the best things about this franchise is how open it is. You can have the dark ones, the mindless brawls, the wtf ones, the goof ones, etc. If you only made deep movies the series wouldn't have survived to this day. Minus one is a single character exploration that uses the monster as a tool, it doesn't even try to say that much about the country as a whole imo, it is really focused on the mc's story, and it works for a lot of people, some who are now getting into the other movies too.
It is a very well executed movie, most of the problems you mentioned about the acting and length were ok to me, it did felt weird how little american presence was there but it wasn't a big deal. Godzilla itself was great in looks, movements and making the breath an actual nuclear explosion was a good call. On the downside some scenes didn't fit the tone of the rest of the movie like the tug boats rescue and the happy ending, and the american and japanese governments behaviors made no sense, it is clear that the writers wanted the civillians to deal with Godzilla by themselves but didn't know how to write it. I have mixed feelings about how the do "kill" the monster. On one hand it was a nice way for the mc to deal with his trauma and close his arc, on the other hand I feel like, as a story, the group plan should have worked, making it fail undermined the group effort. One of the key parts of Shin that made is so good was that the monster was defeated but the human ingenuity and the collective effort to make it work, not military action or singular sacrifice, that is what allowed for humanity to end up towering above Godzilla in the end and gave one of the darkest movies in the series a hopeful tone and a message so fitting for a country used to rebuilding itself.
Overall I think it is a solid 8.5/10. Well made, very entertaining, good addition to the Godzilla collection but it is fundamentally a somewhat shallow work that you can't explore that much so it doesn't reach true greatness.

      @nickh.1314 4 месяца назад

I agree with what you said that, ultimately, as we can tell from the very ending shot, their plan failed. Honestly, I'm not sure why they gave Godzilla regeneration powers in the first place as I'm not sure how that's possible from radioactive mutation, but I feel that kind of soured the ending for me. Also what was the point of brining back Noriko if they're hinting that she is still going to die from this apparently very fast acting Godzilla radiation poisoning? I think her sacrifice would have been more powerful if she just stayed dead, and if Koicho still chose to live at the end.

why so many down votes? Do people expect to watch a review and be favorable to their opinions? If not they down vote it? I think this guy makes valid opinions. Especially how Godzilla was not the main focus of a movie named after him. Some scenes dragged on too long, the whole line of "these were made without an ejection seat" was so obvious and they still dragged out the fakeout death.

I understand, there are 70 years of content to absorb, along with the political context (which unfortunately many people don't accept). Unfortunately, people believe that Legendary's Godzilla is the "real" Godzilla. I thought so too, until I decided to watch the 1954 film because of the 1998 Godzilla and I was surprised. My vision has completely changed. After I saw Godzilla in the opening of "Always Sunset on Third Street 2" I was really looking forward to this film. I can say that I am extremely happy.

I like how this movie was more of metaphorical than some story driven movie, but those things don't really feel effective, making all the things going in this movie go flat. The story of the movie itself was simple, making it feel even more flat.

The only point I disagree with is the U.S. involvement. The U.S. military is in Japan but they are busy preparing for the Cold War against the Soviet Union. It’s been stated in the film that America cannot help and that the Japanese citizens must combat the threat on their own.

But I can say one thing as to a reason for in their defense. Japan is being faced with an increasingly fraught security environment right now because of North Korea so there’s an effort to beef up its military capabilities. You’re gonna see them fighting Godzilla and it’s perfect for their population to see some military might at an uncertain time.

For a certain type of viewer, this review is likely spot on.
So much of the criticism seems to be, it's not Shin Godzilla. It's not Anno satirizing the government. Or trying to find dynamic angles to film boardrooms.(which Anno does very well)
Godzilla -1.0 is a very sincere story. The acting was in a melodramatic style common in lots of Asian tv & movies. I can't speak to the quality of acting until i see it subtitled. The camera & filmmaking conveyed the story well.
The story is very small scale. Mostly taking place in small homes amidst ruins & a few government building interiors, so the absence of U.S. troops isn't too conspicuous with what's shown on screen. It's when you step back and start being critical of the story as a whole it becomes an issue. And it doesn't seem to be something the Japanese like to dwell on in their mainstream entertainment. Not judging just saying thats how it is.
The clothes & period piece setting is slightly stylized, likely because the budget of $15mil USD was stretched to the limit & affording period accurate costumes & sets was not an option. Others will be less charitable & call it cheap or lazy.
Godzilla-1.0 is more '80s Spielberg to well.... Shin Godzilla's Anno being Anno.
The dialogue surrounding this film will be interesting. Godzilla fandom sure has changed recently.

I'm not sure why you have so many downvotes. I mean I completely disagree with your review but I also respect that you put your opinion out there.
I thought the actors for the most part did an amazing job. Was there some over acting going on? Yes but I didn't sense it near the level you did. I think the part when he reveals what's haunting him in his dreams was overdone but again, nothing that made me cringe.
I thought the depiction of how broken Tokyo was left after the Night of Black Snow was quite good and felt very realistic.
As for the lack of US military - I can think of two reasons why this was done. (EDIT- I see my second point is same as yours for the most part)
1- The first is that the focus here was that the movie was about the Japanese people and Japan. It already strains the plot to say that the US will not get involved with a giant monster attacking Japan...it's pretty thin to explain it away by saying the Russians is why. Now imagine you have the Ginza scene and a whole bunch of US soldiers are killed...yeah that completely tears a hole into the US not being involved.
2- For practical reasons. A- The movie was shot while Japan was still in COVID lockdown. Imagine trying to get that many actors to play Americans with that going on. B- The budget. It was made for less than 15 million. You have to cut down expenses somewhere so why not cut an element that just introduces more issues with your storyline?
12:35 The Kyushu J7W Shinden that Shikishima flies into Godzilla's is an actual prototype for the war and was actually a bomber interceptor. I mean, no planes were designed to be Kamikaze and it was then outfitted as such but since he ejected that wasn't an act of Kamikaze anyway if we are getting technical so no, I don't feel like that the plane was the meaning of Japanese spirit. For ME- the message was simply that life is precious and that is the spirit implied...not Japanese but HUMAN spirit. Fun fact- The full scale prop from the movie is on display at the Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum located in Fukuoka.
Now if you're a total Godzilla fanboy then I can see how someone may appreciate Shin Godzilla more or heck even some of the Monsterverse Godzilla since some of them have lots of Godzilla action. But for ME Godzilla's presence was felt throughout Minus One...sort of like The Thing. Didn't have to be on screen for half the movie but sometime less is more and for me Minus One hits the sweet spot.

Everyone else I've heard talk about this film say the drama is one of the strongest points, that it hits you hard enough that you are ok with the fact big G isnt on screen at that time. I've even heard some stories of people who don't speak Japanese are able to emotionally follow along with the film because of how well it was made/acted. I can definitely tell you love Shin Godzilla and it seems youre comparing your love of Shin to how you feel about Minus One so its a bit of a harsh review. To each their own of course! It's interesting, because everyone I know here in Japan who's seen it has echoed my thoughts on the poorer aspects of the film (especially the acting and one-note drama). In fact, the only review currently listed on RT (coming from the Japan Times) has pretty much the exact same view on the film I do. And I'd hazard that if people who can't speak Japanese can follow along emotionally, it's because the acting is extremely broad. Either way, I hope you enjoy it when you're able to see it.

As a long time Godzilla fan, (I even do the roar.) Friends use to all get a kick out of that.
This movie is pretty bad, even the Godzilla design isn’t that great.
The Godzilla in the ocean, chasing the boat scenes were awful. Just not well thought out….is like Jaws meets Godzilla, but corny.
The city scene is absolutely disappointing. Look how they have Godzilla behaving in city scene, the three tanks that just show up on screen, do nothing other than drive forward and fire. I can comment all day about all the bad things about this movie. I waited months for this movie and it was awful in my opinion. Bad acting like you said…. I actually think the American version 2014 is superior to it! And Shin Godzilla is better than all them by leaps and bounds. They literally should have copied paste the original (1954). Which In my opinion is probably the greatest monster movie of all time. Both Versions. I loved the American version with the reporter, telling the story from his own perspective….. They used the old Godzilla score, which I thought the music they used in the trailer was far superior. So the old version music doesn’t fit for this version.

It's funny- I strongly disliked Shin Godzilla, so I hoped I would like this one. And while I consider it a stronger movie, I did find is uneven. Shin Godzilla did ask questions this one doesn't, on the other hand this one is more subtle in the nationalism and more coherent in its message. And ultimately I still had trouble with the characters- some were duds, some were underwritten, some were just plot devices, and the narrative relied a lot on contrivance.
I'm not a fan of the Reiwa films- trying to make Godzilla scary but defeatable just isn't my cup of tea, and it gets repetitive watching another angsty young man blow up Godzilla after a lot of technobabble.

I overall enjoyed the movie but I feel like the story was focused more on the humans rather than Godzilla himself which is not really a bad thing since I did get invested in seeing how the MC deals with the guilt and making a new life for himself but in this case I feel it had been done so well that it takes away from Godzilla in his own movie. I mean the director said it's called Godzilla -1 because Japan was basically reduced to 0 because of the nuclear bombs and now Godzilla brings it to -1 but I never got that impression because we didn't see in the movie too much of Japan being rebuild as a country as they pretty much time-skipped that whole part. I feel like Shin Godzilla did a better job at showing how such a creature was bringing Japan to a state of -1 with the threat of its ability to adapt and that of the US nuking Japan again to get rid of it.

So far you're the first reviewer of Godzilla Minus One that I've seen that was disappointed with the film.
It's being critically praised in Japan so I wonder if it'll get great reviews when it's released in the US.
For those that didn't like Shin Godzilla do you think they'll prefer Minus One more? I'm a big fan of Shin Godzilla but I do prefer the 1954 original film more.
I'm still very excited for Minus One. If Steven Spielberg were to ever make a Godzilla film it would look and feel like Minus One which is something I personally always wanted.

It was to be expected, that opinion of someone with more immediate understanding of the matter will end up being at odds with opinion of more casual audience watching from afar.
I have a question. I don't follow this too close, so I'm sure I'm missing quite a bit; so far however, reaction of home audience- the Japanese- seems to be largely positive. How do you account for that.

Massive changes in pressure are bad for anything living. On paper rocketing Godzilla up to the surface after sending him to the bottom would have the same effect as a scuba diver ascending too fast, he gets the bends and dies a horrible death.

It’s an OK movie, better than Shin Godzilla in my opinion. But overrated for sure. To me, it’s just basically a colored remake of the 1950s original which is still the far superior film. My biggest complaint about Minus One is the fact that Godzilla did very little destruction. We get less than 5 minutes of him demolishing a city in the entire film. Other than that, he spends the entire movie in the ocean. Again, it was not a disappointing film. Just an underwhelming one. Certainly not worth all the hype. The monster verse films might be cheesier and more stupid but they at least try new things in each film. This one, while truer to the root source, is nonetheless, just a redo of what’s already been done.

Outside Japan it’s considered by some the movie of the year. Is the budget 15 million us dollars a lot in Japan? Theres not much resources to accurately portray the time piece? And with the success of this film with such small budget the director will get hired in holywood for sure. My opinion its better than marvels with 270 million US dollars budget.

Well just saw Godzilla Minus One and I will have to say that movie was crazy good. At least from my point of view. The acting wasn’t stellar but it was no different from any other movie made from Japan, Korea, or China. Overly dramatic expressions is a well used acting technique. As for Godzilla’s screen time I would have to say I didn’t notice he wasn’t in it for that long. His scenes and the build up to his scenes made it feel like he was there the hole time. Except the first 30 minute or more in the beginning that went by so quick and then bam there he is.
Anyway such a great film for a small budget that is on par with monster budget movies. If you like Godzilla it is a must see.

I'm glad others are enjoying it more than I did! It's interesting, because everyone I know here in Japan who saw it has come away from the film with a similar opinion to me, at least regarding the issues they have with it. Still, for some, the positives outway the negatives. (The Japan Times review on RT makes pretty much the same points I did, but is counted as a fresh review.) I think I have a bigger issue with the depiction of the Occupation years than others will, and that's ok. It's cool seeing another Japanese film be so enjoyed abroad.

Bro said Shin is a masterpiece LOL. Way to lose any and all credibility. Shin is a disaster of a film disguised as a disaster film. Its a directionless, characterless, soulless husk that guts everything about Godzilla in order to be a half assed satire that begs for imperialism and the destruction of common individuality. Everyone knows Hideaki Anno hates humanity, and it REALLY shows in Shin Godzilla. Meanwhile, Minus One celebrates life, individual freedom and condemns the system which Anno admires. Its the complete inverse of Shin and if you pay attention, is a massive CLAPBACK at that piece of shit that people inexplicably ate up.

People who like informing their opinions within context care how this Godzilla compare to the others. Everyone is indeed entitled to their opinion - including this reviewer. And I heavily disagree with your final notion. When I go see a film, any film - be it a new Nolan, a Star Wars or a Godzilla - by default, I go to see a *good* film and am entitled to disappointment if that's not what I get. A bad film with one moment of thrill is not worth it whatsoever.

Watched the film and the way they hide the murricans is maddening! And worse!
It's so absurd the excuses the movie gives. The murricans piratically abandon Japan because of... "Russia". This is so wrong and so many ways, it not only matched my "fears" when I understood who was directing this movie, it far surpassed it.
About the acting, it's not that bad, it just matched the rest of the movie.
