    Very well instructed video, i love you guys! However I don't know the difference between much and many. Can you make a video on this topic? Thank you for your service Johnny! (I ate a wet avocado with banana milkshake yesterday :) )

    Does the alternating model mean that we should talk about 1 text in the comparative point in juts a long 1 paragraph?

    • @ibenglishguys
      @ibenglishguys  Год назад

      You can compare the texts in every paragraph to some degree. For the alternating method, you can talk about a comparative point for Text A in the first paragraph. As you pivot to Text B, we often like a separate paragraph and THEN bring in the frequent comparative phrases as you discuss Text B with references to Text A as well. See our sample paragraphs for how to do this.

    Hello english guys!
    Will I be penalised if the paragraph of text B mentions and connects to text A too, without focusing only on text B?
    I was confused about it because we've always been asked to focus only on one text in one paragraph

    • @ibenglishguys
      @ibenglishguys  9 месяцев назад +1

      Your job is to compare and discuss similarities and differences. This needs to be done frequently so YES, we recommend linking the two texts as you discuss Text B. You’re also exploring Text B in detail but making LINKS to Text A. It works. Trust us.

    Thank you so much for the video! Could you guys also talk about how to chose the works for paper 2? I am struggling with which ones I should use and whether it matters if one is long and the other short

    • @ibenglishguys
      @ibenglishguys  2 года назад

      I think it’s fine if one is long and the other is short. Choose works that you love, works that have some commonalities but also works with differences like different literary forms, time periods or author background. Choose works that you know well and ones with RICH authorial choices that you can remember and use.

    This is great thanks so much. However I was wondering if this just applies to lang and lit or also literature? I was looking at the sample questions you give. Do they apply to both courses? Thx so much!

      Lang and Lit AND Lit have the same requirements for Paper 2.

    Hi IB English Guys, for the rich idea can i choose like three important themes which both texts share in relation to the GQ? So for example, comparative point #1 will be about the common theme of violence and then i write two paragraphs for that. Then for Comparative point #2 the rich idea would be the theme of transformation, and so on… would that make sense to do?

    • @ibenglishguys
      @ibenglishguys  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, that makes perfect sense. Good luck!

    Hi! I have a question... Is it okay for me to relate the arguments with the authors life and biography, like using the authors life experiences as a possible reason for a certain ending? Thanks for the video :)

    • @ibenglishguys
      @ibenglishguys  10 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, but context is not your main focus.

    Do I need 3 comparative points, or should i just make my analysis more detailed and just use 2 comparative points

    • @ibenglishguys
      @ibenglishguys  2 года назад

      It totally depends on the question and your timing. Aim for multiple comparative points and remember to think in terms of both similarities and differences. Andrew and I just completed a downloadable Paper 2 course (Coming on our website-www.ibenglishguys.com in a few days!) and we had four comparative ideas for our sample essay. Each body paragraph was rather short but we had many points of comparison. In our other sample paper we had three comparative points (6 body paragraphs).

    Great and informative video! I just wanted to know if the approach I'm using is valid, I usually pick a stylistic device present in both texts which can be related to the prompt and talk about it in separate paragraphs. For example, if the technique chosen is symbolism, I will discuss symbolism in Text A in one paragraph and then symbolism in Text B in another paragraph, and then in that second paragraph, I will compare or contrast. I'm wondering if it's okay to only mention one stylistic device per paragraph so that in total, on average 3 major stylistic devices will be mentoined?

    • @ibenglishguys
      @ibenglishguys  Год назад +1

      First of all, Paper 2 is tough and every question will offer a different way to organize a response. We prefer organizing more by comparative ideas than by one device. For example, we may compare two characters in our two texts and how they struggle with identity. The characters and their struggle for identity is our comparative topic for our first two paragraphs where we discuss the two texts. Or in another response, we may choose to compare the endings of both works and how these are similar and different (in response to the question). This is our comparative point. Comparing ONE DEVICE is probably not enough for an entire set of paragraphs. Then you’ll only have highlighted three devices? Look for better points of comparison. Make an outline first! Then see how it goes. Above all, PRACTICE this. We have an exam review course on our website for Paper 2 that is helpful in this regard. Have a look.

      @@ibenglishguys So if I arrange my paragraphs by a comparative idea, does that mean the stylistic device I mention for both texts for the evidence of that specific idea should be the same? Or is it okay if they are different?

  • @alicegerard3508

    Hi! Would you also suggest that some or all of the body paragraphs address both works? Especially if the student does not have time to write 2 paragraphs per point, could the 3rd point be only one joint paragraph? Even with the 'alternating' method, I worry the students will not do enough comparison.

    • @ibenglishguys
      @ibenglishguys  2 года назад +1

      Agreed. If the student cannot write the volume of body paragraphs needed then blending them in ONE paragraph is a fine idea. Our worry was that the body paragraphs would then be much too long. They need a specific comparative point and they need to make sure they don’t fall into the trap of writing two page paragraphs by writing about BOTH works. I think this is a judgment call and worth discussing with students about the best strategy for them. In any case, they need to compare FREQUENTLY. Hope this helps.
