Try to read some and review the stories and plot lines. Get off your screen and read what you can. Take notes and look at the big picture. Know what Paper 2 requires and do your best!
Thanks for posting this great video. What is your understanding of the 'to what extent' part in the final sample question? Your video suggests you will evaluate the extent to which the character is trapped, but I feel that it is actually asking the extent to which the entrapment of characters is used as a criticism of a society in texts. I wonder if something like "often used as evidenced in the following two texts", and maybe an exploration of why this is an effective method to criticise a society in the evaluation section/s of an essay on this question would be sufficient to have fully targeted the question. I worry that otherwise the response would be ever so slightly tangential. What are your thoughts?
Super great question. You are absolutely right that the question asks, “To what extent is this true?” This means to what extent is it true that trapped characters are used to criticize society. This is more about thinking about how much these trapped characters are used by authors as mouthpieces to highlight some type of injustice or unfairness. This seems a deeper way to tackle the question rather than arguing how much characters are trapped. Evaluating the effectiveness of using trapped characters to criticize society will definitely produce a better response. Your question really highlights how much brainwork we need to do before we can produce a good response! Thanks for asking and engaging. This is a such a great activity to do with others in a small discussion too!
Thank you for the great video. I just have a problem when crafting the thesis for paper two. It seems a bit complex since I don't really know whether to include themes, techniques or general authorial choices. It would be great if you make a clarification on that. Thank you.
You don’t have to list a bunch of authorial choices (techniques) in your thesis. You can also write a two sentence thesis like we showed in other videos. Try to write a comparative thesis that answers the question AND offers an argument about similarities and differences. “Although Bangkok and Paris are vastly different cities in terms of their architecture and topography, they both represent culinary epicenters and dominant political hubs for their respective countries.”. Practice writing these types of sentences for simple topics like cars, cities, animals.
In our experience, two or three poems is appropriate to discuss in Paper 2. Of course, this depends on the length of the poems. Remember to focus on the question as you bring in the poems for evidence. Good luck!
Would you be interested in doing a video specifically on using poetry for the Paper 2? I know a group of students who would love it (and a teacher).@@ibenglishguys
A quick question: What happens if the theme that the Paper 2 question focuses on does not actually link well to the literary works we have studied. For example, this idea of "home" is not very prevalent in the works I have studied. What should I do then?
If the question does not fit your literary text, it’s best to find another question. Don’t worry. You have FOUR questions and one will hopefully fit. Think and choose carefully and GOOD LUCK!!!
English Guys, I'm a similarly passionate teacher and I really enjoy your videos, and often recommend them to help support my students' learning. WE HAVE A REQUEST: Would you be interested in doing a video on using a collection of poetry and/or short stories as a Paper 2 text? In the past I have told students not to use poetry, but I am finding that my colleagues in other languages often have their students successfully use poetry as a Paper 2 choice. If your answer is just, "that's a bad idea," we'll understand, but if you have seen poetry and/or short story effectively used as a Paper 2 choice, we'd love some tips on making it work. High fives to you both. @ibenglishguys
Hi Kip. Thanks for the comment. We are starting to see more and more students select poetry and/or short stories for Paper 2, and it can indeed be done successfully. In particular, we've seen stories from The Things They Carried and poetry from Duffy work well. It's totally doable when the chosen stories or poems are connected by a theme or concept (war, gender, identity, transformation, etc). That's a great idea for a video!
Every text has a context and a time and a place and this will come up in your writing but this should not be a major focus. The old course put a huge emphasis on context and the new course MUCH less so. Focus on comparing the texts and exploring similarities and differences including a comparison of authorial choices. However, when context is important in a discussion, feel free to mention this in a sentence to show understanding. Good luck!
Hi gents, I'm jsus wondering - Ive gone back and reread the guide, and can't see anywhere that a Lang Lit paper 2 has to be on two literary texts. All the wording centers around the fact that it is a comparison of two works. Are you able to clarify please?
Paper Two is a comparative essay on two “works” that are taught in the course. A work is defined as a literary text in the course guide. Paper two is a literary exam. Neither of these “works” can be used for any other assessment by the student (IO or HL Essay). Hope this clarifies.

thxs for this video. a quick question: if we are comparing poetry, what is the recommended number of poems per author to study? thank you!

What should we add about context? How far should we describe it?
