i really appreciate that you guys posted this sample paper video, I have a paper 2 tomorrow and I really hope I can raise my grade with it from your guys’ help 😭
Watching this two days before the exam, I feel like I can do this. I hate false hope, but thankfully, once it's done, it's done for real. Hello from Vietnam!
I'm actually writing my P2 in Polish A, but the lack of resources has led me to your video for which I'm beyond grateful!!! Now I know at least something lmaooo
I had some queries: Q1. I noticed that the student left the comparison midway. For instance, the "mirror descending" in "Death and the Maiden" is only mentioned in a single line. I was wondering, wont there be a need to include some context or convert it to a more significant point? Or is it ok to not emphasise and merely state a comparison? Q2. Is it really alright if our response contains lesser textual references? Such as two in each paragraph? Q3. How to ensure that the conclusion is not a complete repetition of the intro or the thesis? Overall, this video has been a great help and relieved my qualms but in the end the difference in the approach to teaching and the videos we watch can raise doubts. Thank you for the video!
Hi, sorry this is a late question but I have my English end of year exams in a few days. Would you say it makes sense to look at the similarities and differences in one paragraph or analyse in one paragraph per text and then look at the similarities and differences in another paragraph simultaneously
The student wrote in the second body paragraph that Paulina could no longer listen to the Schubert "Symphony". It is a string quartet rather than a symphony (to be more precise Schubert's 14th String Quartet "Death and the Maiden" from which the play directly borrows the tittle). Do these types of little (acceptable) mistakes penalize a lot? It is clear from the paper that the student has a deep understanding of the text, but at the same time the String Quartet is an essential motif of the play (representing Paulina's trauma). In other words, are stupid errors penalized by IB examiners? And if so, how much?
Despite that, I want to highlight that it is an amazing video, and it has helped me a lot! Furthermore, the sample paper is incredible! I just wanted to know because I always do some little mistakes :)
Great question and a very good observation. It’s not a symphony and yes, Schubert’s quartet is ESSENTIAL to this play. This is a mistake but remember too that these papers are written under duress and a misstep might be forgiven if the rest of the paper is rock solid. I’ve had students write the wrong title or author by accident and I KNEW they were just mixing the two by mistake. I would ignore that. Examiners have to look at the WHOLE PAPER and choose the marks that are the best fit. Top marks on any criteria usually leave little room for many mistakes but one or two? No one’s perfect. Know your text. Do your best. Be accurate and let the chips fall.
is there a fixed way to individualise words or phrases con the essay? as you showed with the areas of analysis: textual preferences, dramatic/literary experiences, author/audience references, question words, context, comparative language?
Hello! I have my paper 2 tomorrow morning. Is the word count of 1000-1300 words a strict limit? I feel like I will be wasting time trying to count all my words while writing.
Choose two books that have some loose connections. Go over past questions and try to think about how you would answer them using those texts. In any case, READ as much as you can and read about the texts you are studying. Deep knowledge on these texts will take you very far. Relax and enjoy your summer too!
@@ibenglishguys I have my paper tomorrow I would like to know if you have outline template you would like to share or suggest on the different ways to make the outline of the paper 2 essay
For this coming May 2022 exam session, the IB has taken Paper Two off the table for students worldwide. However, we are currently teaching the Paper 2 to our grade 11 students and feel that it is an important assessment and a good learning experience for kids. We love comparing texts.
It’s a strong sample for sure. Look at each paragraph and what the student is doing. Go through your own process and systematically write your paper with rich thinking of your own. We can’t all be LeBron but that’s OK! Watching LeBron inspires and makes you better.
Hi there, and thanks for the question. There is no word limit for Paper Two. Spend some time breaking down the question and then create a brief outline. The rest of the time is for your to produce as much quantity - with quality - as possible within the allotted time. Make sure you get to that conclusion, and best of luck!

This model does not have compare AND contrast material. Did I miss something?
Our paper 2 example highlights similarities and differences in the paper. This is a comparative essay.

Is The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass a literary work?
Yes, this would be prose nonfiction.
What are other tips would you provide to improve skills for paper 2 over the summer
