  • The only time Morrison authorized a film adaptation of one of her books was with Beloved, which she allowed Oprah Winfrey to option on 1987. 11 years later, Winfrey was finally able to bring it to the screen, with the added support of director Jonathan Demme. Winfrey stars as Sethe, a former slave confronted by the secrets that have haunted her for years. When an an old friend (Danny Glover) unexpectedly reenters her life, Sethe begins to slowly rediscover who she is-until a mysterious young woman (Thandie Newton) appears on their doorstep one day.

Just saw Thandie Newton's post about this film and only remember how horrified I was as a child watching this film. I couldn't finish watching it...scarred my mind for a while. Maybe better to read the book first, or just.
All the actors in the film are incredible, part of why I wanted to watch it.

I'm fascinated by how many comments here are consistently mentioning how terrified this film left people. I knew there were supernatural elements to it, but I had no idea it got that...dark.
I'm revisiting Jonathan Demme's filmography, this being one of his films I still somehow haven't seen. Found it on sale on Amazon on dvd (it was not available streaming) for only $5 a few days ago. Bought it immediately. It came in the mail today and, before watching it, I wanted to re-watch the trailer (I remember seeing it ages ago...) and see how people were commenting.
Apparently it is *much* scarier than I anticipated. :)
I'm a cinema guy, and have to, all due respect, admit to knowing virtually nothing about Morrison; all I know of her novel "Beloved" is its title. Judging from the comments here though, she was clearly a gifted writer, much beloved in her own right. Looking forward to seeing what choices Demme (a *gifted filmmaker* if ever there was one...) made adapting her work.

I have to get this movie probably a 6 out of a 10 because it's too damn long just like my comment but you really got to watch This movie very closely or you will completely get lost..
