    Better wheels. Better tires. 4 wheel drive. Hill decent/hill hold (auto only). Locking rear diff. D44 rear axle. Skid plates. Bilstein suspension. Crew cab. Leather/Heated seats. Bedliner. Roof rack. Rockford/Fosgate sound/Sirius XM/Nav. The legendary 261hp/281lbs VQ40 V6. The differences are a little more than just fog lights and an extra inch of ground clearance (Roman) for $17,000. Yes they share common bones, but are really two completely different trucks. Pro4x for me.

    I have 2005 Nissan Frontier that has the V6 and 4x4 and that's about it (this is before the pro-4x days of course). BUT, I was able to load it with all kinds of aftermarket parts such as Bilstein shocks, radflow coilovers, 3inch lift, 33ich tires, custom exhaust, magnaflow muffler, K&N cold air intake and an external transmission cooler......And after all that it added up to about the same price of a tacoma of the same year and none of the aftermarket stuff. Frontier's are diamonds in the rough if you're willing to put the work into them. Hell I even had enough left over to put put a decent sound system in.

      @SnowWolf9999 6 лет назад +4

      Even back then they had The old NISMO package which was essentially the PRO4x package ..... except they got rid of the NISMO exhaust. But yeah if you're willing to do the work you can get a slightly used SV for really cheap and add all the suspension and off road goodies you want

    My opinion on the matter of it being the oldest truck in the market is this. Why change something that works and sells? Dodge and chevy would keep their trucks the same for decades. Changing the design all the time or as the term people use "refresh" seems foolish. To me seems like the market is treated like womens fashion now. Everything has to change with the season. But thats my two cents.

    • @jimmym5262
      @jimmym5262 7 лет назад +8

      Darryl Benson why? Why does it need tech to begin with? People should know how to drive without it. With it , it's a crutch. Your right about price. Now imagine they sell the same truck they have made for 15 years or so but sell it for like 12 grand new! Like the versa. Now that is worth old tech if it's that price.

    • @DRTMaverick
      @DRTMaverick 7 лет назад +1

      Certain tech upgrades, certain upgrades (regardless of tech or not) are important in order to maintain a line of vehicles. Interior updates including different audio and navigation setups help modernize a vehicle (and I'm not sure how much offroading you do, but a GPS when you're offroading is a life-saver, phones are worthless without reception and cannot load their maps). The main problem with design change is that if you're still using the same layout there's only so much you can really change- trim and such is about it, but it's still important to keep the vehicle fresh inside.
      As far as ECU/TC/VDC tech goes- our vehicles are all equipped with this stuff, base model or pro-4x, so you're going to have it regardless. Having VDC and traction control operating with the same parameters on the same computer setup as you had in 2005 probably isn't going to give you the most efficient traction control, vehicle dynamic control, ABS, etc, which is nice on and offroad (though we do tend to disable a lot of TC stuff offroad).
      Though you are right for the most part, the frame-on-body design is a great workhorse and there's not much to be done that will improve on it, it's just still important to keep the vehicle modernized and up-to-date. You can keep the same platform, but when your competition is offering powered, heated seats, heated mirrors, modernized audio/navigation system that your bluetooth actually connects to, you'd better get ontop of your game and start incorporating those into your vehicle's design, because those things sell, and a company like Nissan will not keep a vehicle around no matter how good it is if it's not making them money (Xterra for example).
      So in short, why shouldn't they keep it identical to how it was in 2005? Simply because they won't make money on it.

      @christopherfeist1687 7 лет назад +2

      New technology and engineering improvements are not bad things. Speaking from an engineers perspective, you always learn from a previous design making the next design better. If a company doesn't go through the process of developing a new vehicle, they aren't going to learn. This goes well beyond driver aid tech. It's engine design, transmission, attachment methods, ergonomics, sensors designed to improve performance and assist in preventative maintenance. Technology and design advance and if you don't attempt to keep up, your company is going to be left behind.

    • @DRTMaverick
      @DRTMaverick 7 лет назад

      Oh I'll agree- I was going to mention it would be brilliant if they'd kept their Xterra and included a diesel option for it, same with the frontier.
      They could keep the same platform, frame and body, but change quite a bit as far as sensors, engine, suspension... The Pro-4x suspension honestly is Not that impressive and should be their base-model suspension. They should offer something like RadFlo, Kings, Icon, or Fox 2.5's for their pro-4x line.

      well as a consumer, please leave me behind. I will stick with my 97 pickup that doesn't have all the nanny controls. Haven't the need for dummy lights and 42 airbags and crumple zones. As a consumers perspective I dont want companies to change what I already like going.

I was happy that even the base model didn't skimp on safety features. I wanted to buy another one to replace it but I couldn't find one at the time and ended up buying a Tacoma instead.

    Great thing about the Frontier is that it is relatively unchanged since 2005. You don't need to buy a brand spanking new one to get something nice. There are plenty of used ones out there for a lot less money with the exact same functionality. Get a 2013 or 2014 pro-4x and what is the difference? A slightly different graphics option. Keep an eye out and you can find one with relatively low mileage as well.

      GT6SuzukaTimeTrials yeah maybe, but you have to upgrade to get am/ fm, a.c., cruise control, 4 banger 2 wheel drive "king " cab etc msrp is 20k but you could probably get for 15k easily, or fully loaded with 4x4 v6 and crew cab that has a 36k msrp but you could probably get for under 25k possibly very low 20s. At that point why even be cheap when you can have all that and power windows, seats and more for a few thousand?

    • @SnowWolf9999
      @SnowWolf9999 6 лет назад +4

      with the 2 shown it would take more than 17k to upgrade the base to a Pro4x, but what they don't say is you can get a SV 4x4 mid to high 20s and this has most of what the Pro4x has such as - 4x4, the v6, crew cab, bed liner, etc.... the only things you don't get are the Dana locking rear, slightly beefier springs, Bilsten shocks, sportier seats and full skid plates

    How do I put this? It's your money so you are absolutely free to spend it on whatever you want. I could never justify spending that kind of money on a new truck. In fact, the last 3 trucks I have owned have all been 2wd. A big reason for that is the ridiculous prices people expect for 4x4s even used. The most recent truck (actually a van) is my 87 Ford Econoline 350. It's a bare bones work van. Yes, 2wd as all vans are unless a front axle has been 3rd party installed. I live in western ny and am no stranger to heavy winter storms. I installed a locker in my rear axle, and 33 inch snow tires. Combined with over 12 inches (stock) of ground clearance, I have never gotten stuck in any snow, even 3 foot drifts. My 4x4 silverado actually used to struggle more. For the summer I put 33 inch MTs on it, and haven't come across any mud that can stop it. That being said, I can't justify getting a 4x4 when my properly equipped 2wd hasn't broken a sweat on anything I've come across.

      fuel economy is more about aerodynamics than hp. the front air damn on the silvervado is only about six inches off the ground. where as these trucks don't really even have a front air damn. I used to drive a V6 2wd silverado for work, and it only averaged about 15mpg.

      Nissan's VQ40 motor is an absolute rock crusher of an engine. I'll burn a few more dinosaurs in exchange for reliability and take that deal any day of the week. Trucks these days are delicate flowers, plagued with problems and recalls compared to the Frontier. And by the way, your Silverado comes with lightweight rims and street tires. The wheel/tire combo on the Rex weighs about 80lbs per corner.

      I had a 2001 4x4 limited Tundra extended cab that I Loved! Almost the perfect truck imo, sadly I experienced an overhead cam issue at 225,000 that took the engine out. I almost put a replacement engine in the truck because I loved it so much but I decided to buy a bit newer truck in Hope's of better mpgs as I drive alot and 3 to 4 mpgs better adds up. The 2001 tundra was the perfect size truck imo. Id had a 1988 4x4 extended cab ranger before the tundra and really like the mid size truck size so the tundras space was awesome but not too big. The newer full size trucks were just too big for my needs/wants. So I ended up buying a 2008 frontier 4x4 crew cab long bed. And well 250,000 plus miles, 6 years later, and still running strong I have to say that the frontier has earned its place as the best truck I've ever owned! Although the 2001 tundra is a close 2nd and I wouldnt hesitate owning another first gen tundra. For me the better fuel mileage and reliability of the frontier put it ahead of the tundra but I did love the look of my tundra better. Oh and for anyone wondering why I didnt go with a Tacoma it's because I couldn't justify the price difference between it and a comparable frontier when all my research put the trucks neck and neck and the frontier seemed to win out on most categories pertaining to reliability performance and value. Resale didnt matter to me as I keep my trucks until the end of their life usually. Tacomas are great trucks I'm sure but imo for the money the frontier is better. However if they brought the first gen tundra back with a more fuel efficient engine and a newer transmission to help with mpg then I'd buy it. Or maybe just a diesel engine in a first gen tundra now that would be Awesome. If I had lots of money I'd build one of those!

I love the truck, I get and average of 18mpg and 26 on the hyw empty. I also have a travel trailer that weighs 4,700 lbs I can tow effortlessly and still get 16 mpg on the flats and 10-12 mpg in the mountains of N.E. On a recent trip to FLA &TN I averaged 16 mpg on the trip with the wife and all the stuff we carry! I rolled over a Cat Scale at 9,670 lbs! With a CGWR of 12,000 I had plenty to go! We even had my HD Sportster in the bed! The only thing is the trailer was still winterized, so our water tans and grey tanks were empty. At no time was I at any time short of power! In any of the hill country we came across either on back roads or Interstate hyw. So far we have owned the truck one year now with just over 14,000 trouble free miles of all kinds of terrain. From hyw towing to off road exploring and beach running and would not hesitate to buy another!

    Just a minor note but as a general rule a spray in bed liner from the factory is usually pretty crappy. The factory spray in liners tend to be paper thin which means they gouge and scratch easy and the factory crews almost never scuff the bed before spraying it in which makes it easy to peel off. They still charge you LineX prices for it though.

    Further, I cannot understand why that 2.5 in-line 4, couldn't power a 4-WD set up. I think it would capture a good bit of market share.
    Not everybody want's ( or can afford the cost )of a big snortin' V8 powered 4 wheel drive beast !

    I think i got the perfect Nissan Frontier S model. 2014 nissan frontier with the 4.0 v6, 4 door, 4 wheel drive, 5 ft bed with plastic bed liner. I dont know if my version is rare but ive only seen 1 other truck exactly like mine. So stock it has manual everything. Locks, windows, and mirrors. Its a very weird version of a stock truck. Ive made it my own with a 2.5 inch lift on 33's, and more things to come

    They're comparing a cheap company delivery car... to a FULLY LOADED pickup for ONLY $17,000 more. So, $37,000. Hmmm. IF ya can afford it. Or get financing. It's still expensive. Unless you're well to do and dropping $70,000 on a new full-size plus adding a lift kit and (rims and tires) plus installation fees and taxes plus MORE interest on the financing...
    The Frontier is a really cool truck. It's an older style but proven and dependable. And it comes with all the loaded features you'd expect. Great truck.

    The best IMO is the SV V6. You get all the power of the pro x4, the power windows, bluetooth, but combined with 2WD and you can get them for 25k, or only 5k more then the underpowered I4 base model. And MPG is nearly identical.

    Also worth mentioning, the white truck, has a two-piece driveshaft. Center Support Bearings go out with abuse, in my experience. I have to imagine that the single driveshaft truck will be far more reliable when used in somewhat extreme traction conditions.

    So, i know a year old, but some miss the obvious. Fully loaded SV 4x4 is $27K. Prices (installed) for upgrades that exceed the Pro4x- OME Suspension and ARB Locker- $4k. UnderArmor- $1K, Kenwood Stereo -$1K, Rhino Rack- $500. So, for $6500 more, I can exceed all the capabilites of the 4x, while saving $3500 for other things. BTW, If you shop smart, or install yourself, the savings easily increase to over $5k. Same basic core, better off road capabilities and performance, for less!

    Here's my want list: Manual transmission (less inclined to overheat under load; less expensive to repair); Manual transfer case linkage (less likely to malfunction); Manual hubs (less likely to malfunction than axle disconnects); Steel wheels (if you hit a rock hard enough that it would crack a cast aluminum wheel and the wheel wouldn't hold air, the steel wheel would likely bend but would be likely to still hold air--and it's easier to straighten the steel wheel than to repair the aluminum one); manual window lifts (Why the expletive deleted don't manufacturers supply vehicles with a small hole in the door panels so a crank can be inserted to operate the window manually when the electric mechanism malfunctions?).
    So here's my question: Which 2017 models offer more of the things on my want list?

    The answer is always the base model. Whether it be the base model nissan , ford etc. Most people never actually use their 4wd enough to warrant the price. But me, personally I don't need 4wd, power windows, power locks ,gps etc. Hell I don't even need cruise control or a/c. I don't need amenities nor want them. For me I want a truck to be a truck. Nothing more.

      You must not offroad in your truck either then. Base model is a 2WD.
      For me a truck is worthless if it can't perform where you need it to. A 2WD, 145hp (yet still 4,600lb) vehicle offroading just doesn't cut it for me. Great work trucks for cable companies on account of how cheap they are but that's about the only use for a base model. And that's if you hate your employees.
      Then again my Xterra is fully armored and goes places your old mother would scold you like you were five regardless of your age if she ever found out you were on. ;)

    • @jimmym5262
      @jimmym5262 7 лет назад +16

      no i just dont need amenities in a machine. Its supposed to be a truck not liberaces living room. Its a work thing. All those amenities add weight which is why trucks weigh so much today. If you need a heated seats and steering wheel in a truck you might want to check your drawers to see if youve got a snatch.

    • @jimmym5262
      @jimmym5262 7 лет назад +12

      I don't offroad, just need a truck to be a truck in new england. I deal wit snow every year and have never needed 4wd. Just put sand bags in the bed with good tires and drive like safely. I find for me 4wd is a waste of money for what I do and waste of weight conservation. I like simple machines. And have no need or want for things I will never use. I would rarely use 4wd. And never use bluetooth or gps etc. If it was on a vehicle It would just sit there as I have no use for it.

    Would you recommend the non-pro-4X 4X4 with the 4.0 litter V6 and the crew cab? That is the one I was looking at a few years ago. I think you can get those for around 26K+- without stuff you do not need like sunroofs and leather seats. I used a non-pro-4X 4X4 Frontier to get up to Carson Saddle near Lake City last year and it had no problem. It has the BF Goodrich AT's on it though.

  • @jkutyna
    @jkutyna 6 лет назад

    Just a point here. You cannot "ADD" a bedliner to a cheaper version of a truck and come anywhere close to the quality you get from the factory sprayed in liner. The factory liner is sprayed in by robots and is very exacting in it's installation. ALL aftermarket spray ins are inferior and are installed by human hands and thus your mileage may vary based on the skill/experience of the spray painter doing your installation. No matter HOW good he or she may be, they will never approach the consistency in weight, application, and density that the robot gives.

    I'd say the base model is decent value for money, but the Pro-4x isn't and always would remind you of its' old design and cheap plastics and what else you could've had for $37k. Especially if you've budgeted for a given monthly payment and wind up owning the base model outright in a little over half as long as it'd take for the Pro-4x.

    37K for the pro-4x? Lol. Hardly, the true car fair purchase price is only 29K. Plus you can get the S with 4x4 and/or crew cab with auto or manual. Just like you can cheapen up the pro-4x by getting it in a king cab with no stupid looking roof rack. But if your still not sure just get the SV 4x4. Best of both worlds; you get the nice radio, V6, 4wd, but none of the stuff you may not want like leather, skid plates, or the locking diff. Nissan has these truck options set up perfectly to where you can pretty much get exactly what you want. And I’ve researched these things a lot, it may just be my area, but from what I’ve seen you couldn’t spend 37K if you wanted too.
