One thing I really appreciate about the frontier is that they still offer a manual with the 4x4. Chevy and GMC both ditched the 4x4 manual options, and thats disappointing.
I don't understand why this truck was tested with its max tow weight. Yet you tested the new ford ranger and Tacoma with only 5000lbs. For comparison sake pick a standard.. with that said I do appreciate the work you guys put into these videos..
Not much point in a complete redesign at this point. There is a segment of the market that prefers a time tested and reliable design over the latest and greatest and Nissan is the only one appealing to those folks at the moment.
Have a 2011 crew cab short bed rwd, was my dad's, now it's mine with 186,000 miles. Never had any big problems and the most it's towed was a 10k pound trailer, it did that a few times a month for maybe 3 or 4 years. For midsize trucks it's perfect.
I love the Frontier this generation and even the new generation, it's such an underrated mid size truck compared to it's competition, it's very smooth and is quiet too even when under full load that is what has always impressed me with the Frontier's for a daily driver and when you're actually using them as a truck.

Europe already has the new frontier (Navara),we have had it for about a year now so im sure America will be getting it soon. It now has a 2.3 biturbo diesel engine.
For being as FREAKING OLD as it is, the Frontier has always managed to impress in TFLTruck tests. Its back seat, interior materials, and MPG suck, but it gets the job done and is surprisingly capable and competent in terms of real world work whenever it is tested.
A couple months ago I bought this very model, a 2017 Frontier Pro4-X. I’ve only put a couple thou on the clock, and I haven’t taken it off-road yet, but I’m happy I happened to be at that car lot at that time.

Its been a year since i got my 2018 Frontier sv 4.0 2wd bran new on sale for 24k i have only hit about 3k on hitch and the truck pulled it very well. Definetly wish the trailer had breaks tho in bad traffic. These lil trucks sure can give it hell when they need to. My advice get a Frontier before a redesigned can't beat a 10 year 100k warranty.
I been pulling 5000LBS.. Regularly with exterra for ten plus years never any problems at all really big wheelsandaxle.. On trailer and new tires on truk... Are key though. With heavy hitch and trailer brakes it can hang with the big dogs atleast to 55mph
Why can't a company build an offroader with *all* manual options... a lot of us don't need power windows, seating, door locks, an ipad in the console, auto transmission. Make a Lotus elise version of a truck with a rock solid engine, drivetrain, and underbelly. They'd sell the shit out of something like that...
tsnorquist Problem is that the number of people who are that hard core about off roading and want to do it in a new truck that they're making payments on is vanishingly small.
They made those. Its called a toyota pick up from the mid 90s. Or a 90s wrangler. Or a jeep prior to 2010 I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but that is litterly how the car manufacturers look at it.
I love my Frontier, but it's long worn out and I'm tired of replacing parts on it. I wish Nissan would release the Navara here already, but only as long as it is at least as fast as the 2nd gen Frontier with the VQ40DE. The 2nd gen Frontier is fast and fun to drive. *sniff*
Well, what do you give it? Ahhh, well, ahhhh, 17, well, 16, I'd like to go higher. Come on, you don't have a number because you don't have a standardized worksheet. Dash 0-2 point subjective opinion. Steering and handling 0-2. Comfort, ergonomics, use of materials 0-2. Overall styling 0-2. Value 0-2. That's ten points. Change the other three to 30 points each. That makes it more fact based, less opinion based and the opinion has a worksheet so you have the number in-hand which you can discuss your thoughts on the five sections. Or make ten sections 0-1 points and discuss them.
It's going to be a while before we see the Navara. It will likely be torture tested in Australia and other markets first before they can re-tool the plant and bring it here ready to go. The good news is that it should have all the bugs worked out, and it sounds like its a good truck.
I just bought a frontier a 4x2 love the tow test,at a I know it is not junk and Matthew motors Wilmington NC they bend over backwards for you. See Shane.
You can't give a fair mpg rating if the outside temperature isn't close on all the vehicles. I get a 10+ Mpg difference from winter and summer. I live in cold Michigan like you live in cold Colorado. I bet if you had done this test in the summer the mpg would have been 6+
Bring the Navara that they have in Australia with the diesel and Nissan will smash the Colorado that fits the bill. Definitely still waiting on Nissan so I can tow my Nissan 240sx to the track.
It's an actual work truck, instead of a blitzed out SUV wannabe with chromed out agressive front ends and more electronics then an apple store. It's simple, boxy, practical, and old fashioned.
Matthew Sanchez: it's a clean and classy design, and not overstyled too much like the Honda Ridgeline and Chevy Colorado pickup trucks are, which makes it age alot better. look how overstyled the new Honda Civic is, and i can already tell that it's not gonna age as good as the previous generation Civic and the one before that. the only new Honda i like is the redesign CRV and the Honda Fit. im also a fan of the last generation Accord alot more than the new one. now for the Tacoma i have to say that i preferred the grill on the previous generation Tacoma along with the 4.0L v6 instead of the 3.5L v6. it's still a good truck, but this Nissan Frontier is the only midsized truck i would take over the Tacoma. now if Toyota had kept the 4.0L V6, the Tacoma would be my top choice. i understand why they switched to the 3.5, but to me a truck needs to be a truck.
I have an ‘09 SE, very reliable truck, no warranty issues so far. I’m surprised you could pull that trailer weight, do u subtract for driver/passenger weight? Also I’m thinking of buying a new F150 with a turbo V6 with better gas mileage, thats how Nissan should go when they redesign!
I just bought a 2017 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X used off the lot (15,000km only!) for $30k. Keep in mind this is in Yukon Territories, Canada. Kind of appropriate it's called "Frontier" eh? :)
Frontier falls apart after 100k / 10years. To date, we've spent over $6k on: replaced the engine - oil pump failure (and there is NO indash indicator of oil pressure / oil level?! you're suppose to check your oil every fill-up at the pump :) replaced failed distributor replaced failed starter (OK this isn't that bad but annoying when you're stuck in someone's driveway) replaced fuel tank replaced ABS brake sensors replaced timing belt (this is expected per the owner's manual BUT what they don't tell you is b/c of the layout 2 mechanics said it was simpler to replace the whole damn water pump at the same time) The tranny slips now b/w 3rd and 4th so it's going to go bust soon.
Having watched this when it first came out, I just noticed the OD was off going downhill. If it was left alone the transmission would kick it down to 3rd making the brake test even better🙂
Everyone dogs this truck for how it looks/engine. But one day when they renew it with a different look and different motor with push button start which they’ve already down for e 2020 it has push button start people will miss this truck. I’m happy I got my 2017 Pro-4x in my drive way, will keep this truck for a life time.
you guys always test the top of the line model. What about the regular one test. No everybody have the money to buy the top of the line model. I'm trying to buy one of the regular ones to pull a 4,300lbs trailer. The frontier 6 cylinders will be capable of pull my trailer?
Hi This might be a long shot but I was just wondering what fuel economy would be for crossover vehicle since they tow roughly about 5,000 pound most of the competitor and the new engine with more power and torque might be a nice ike gaunlet run that would be nice to do. for example Highlander, Pathfinder, Explorer, Pilot, Traverse, Sorento, Santa Fe
i got one for Mr. Truck. How do you regain control of a trailer that starts swaying/fish tailing? (I'm assuming that only happens on an unbalanced load)
We discuss this and many other topics in our new book www.TruckNutsBook.com The quickest way to regain control of the swaying trailer is to manually activate trailer brakes with the trailer brake controller (without applying truck's brakes). This Frontier did not come with a trailer brake controller, but one can be added.
mountainhobo Go to TFL truck, click on playlist. Click on Ike folder. I just rewatched it and both and the Colorado and Canyon lost to the Frontier going up the Ike in time but won the downhill and subjective to which they are not evaluating their opinions over the same things consistently. I'm beginning to think they're keeping the subjective this way to pick winners and losers on the down low, based on bias.
Yes, I expected they had the scores in past evaluation videos, it just struck me as inconsistent with the comparison format not to mention the other scores. As for the subjective scoring, yes, that is always a danger, particularly when the subjective point pool is so high -- it is easy to skew the results. As you said, subjective pool could be subdivided into specific categories.
The 6 speed manual model is the way to go much more refined than the automatic and get this revs only 1900 rpm at 60 mph a huge difference compared to the auto 5 speed. I was pleasantly surprised with the manual pro 4 x model very quiet and smooth on road a real mountain goat off road. pro 4 x standard tires spot on

Or a jeep prior to 2010
I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but that is litterly how the car manufacturers look at it.
Because they'd sell VERY few of them. It's not worth their time.
D LG It would be worth their time if they'd do it.
tsnorquist And make a diesel version also.
in Australia we had the D40 pretty much the same but smaller tub. We Now have the NP300 is that basically what you guys would be getting as well
unfortunately Australia has to put up with terrible engine choices we do not
I love my Frontier, but it's long worn out and I'm tired of replacing parts on it.
I wish Nissan would release the Navara here already, but only as long as it is at least as fast as the 2nd gen Frontier with the VQ40DE. The 2nd gen Frontier is fast and fun to drive.
*sniff*
Really love this design and craftsmanship. You’re very talented. PS: put a snow stop onto the roof where the chimney is.
need that Tacoma Ike test to compare too as well !!
TiDliDa1 Which one?
TiDliDa1 they did the Tacoma
Yeah! SPOILERS: 2016 model got 58 points, and the 2017 got 60! Go Frontier!!!
We tested the new 2016 Tacoma last year. You can check out that video on our channel.
Didn't the Frontier get a better score?
I love Mr. Truck!!!
Was overdrive used going uphill? Gear indicator showed “4”.
Have a 2019 gunmetal crew cab pro 4x Frontier and couldn’t be happier after a year in
Long live the Frontier!
It's going to be a while before we see the Navara. It will likely be torture tested in Australia and other markets first before they can re-tool the plant and bring it here ready to go. The good news is that it should have all the bugs worked out, and it sounds like its a good truck.
A great truck not laden with all the gadgetry that will prove to be a nightmare down the road. Simple is better, and the Frontier defines it.
$37? Found a brand new 2016 Pro4X for $27k
This one has a $2100 option package and $800 moonroof. Yours is probably not optioned, but still a great price.
where?
37k is too much for a truck that size...
I bet if you had done this test in the summer the mpg would have been 6+
Are the mix up of fluids fixed for the 2017 or 2018 models?? Planning to buy a pro4x in a couple of weeks.
Nah they fixed that in 2010
@@jacobhanson9009 What did they fix?
Bring the Navara that they have in Australia with the diesel and Nissan will smash the Colorado that fits the bill. Definitely still waiting on Nissan so I can tow my Nissan 240sx to the track.
They review all other midsize trucks with 5000lb’s of towing! Poor Frontier has to compete with an extra 1000lb’s of weight then gets bashed for it! 😕
I'm looking to do a Titan V8 swap in my 05 frontier soon. 315 hp on tap and maybe 500# raise in tow limit.
Hi Were you towing with the OD turned off?
I'm curious as well
How do manuels on this truck do?
Frontier rollout...2021. Looks awesome!!!!
What is the axle ratio on this truck?
What is it about the Frontier that makes it soooo freaken sexy!!!???
It's an actual work truck, instead of a blitzed out SUV wannabe with chromed out agressive front ends and more electronics then an apple store.
It's simple, boxy, practical, and old fashioned.
Matthew Sanchez
Check out mine. Got couple videos on my channel
Matthew Sanchez it's gotta be those wheel arch flares
it's the classic look
You guys should do more tow testing with the long bed frontiers/tacomas
I love the music at the end near the end of the run
I have an ‘09 SE, very reliable truck, no warranty issues so far. I’m surprised you could pull that trailer weight, do u subtract for driver/passenger weight? Also I’m thinking of buying a new F150 with a turbo V6 with better gas mileage, thats how Nissan should go when they redesign!
hey good video. did nissan change their frontier?
At 6:57 it sounds like he says "BIG buttholes" 😂😂
I just bought a 2017 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X used off the lot (15,000km only!) for $30k. Keep in mind this is in Yukon Territories, Canada. Kind of appropriate it's called "Frontier" eh? :)
Where can I get a jacket like Mr. Truck?
Frontier falls apart after 100k / 10years.
To date, we've spent over $6k on:
replaced the engine - oil pump failure (and there is NO indash indicator of oil pressure / oil level?! you're suppose to check your oil every fill-up at the pump :)
replaced failed distributor
replaced failed starter (OK this isn't that bad but annoying when you're stuck in someone's driveway)
replaced fuel tank
replaced ABS brake sensors
replaced timing belt (this is expected per the owner's manual BUT what they don't tell you is b/c of the layout 2 mechanics said it was simpler to replace the whole damn water pump at the same time)
The tranny slips now b/w 3rd and 4th so it's going to go bust soon.
The 2nd gen frontier has no distributor. Your vehicle is over 15 years old, stuff is going to start to break on it.
yall aren't testing the Tacoma this year?
Having watched this when it first came out, I just noticed the OD was off going downhill. If it was left alone the transmission would kick it down to 3rd making the brake test even better🙂
Everyone dogs this truck for how it looks/engine. But one day when they renew it with a different look and different motor with push button start which they’ve already down for e 2020 it has push button start people will miss this truck. I’m happy I got my 2017 Pro-4x in my drive way, will keep this truck for a life time.
Most people I know prefer the frontier over the new titan, love the affordability of it
you guys always test the top of the line model. What about the regular one test. No everybody have the money to buy the top of the line model. I'm trying to buy one of the regular ones to pull a 4,300lbs trailer. The frontier 6 cylinders will be capable of pull my trailer?
I wish you guys could test the base model too
We can but it does not tow very much. Here you go: ruclips.net/video/oIr8eD5u95o/видео.html
Trailer brake?
Hi
This might be a long shot but I was just wondering what fuel economy would be for crossover vehicle since they tow roughly about 5,000 pound most of the competitor and the new engine with more power and torque might be a nice ike gaunlet run that would be nice to do. for example Highlander, Pathfinder, Explorer, Pilot, Traverse, Sorento, Santa Fe
i got one for Mr.
@@TFLtruck it is prewired for the controller. They cost under $100.
What were the scores for Canyon and Colorado?
mountainhobo Go to TFL truck, click on playlist.
The 6 speed manual model is the way to go much more refined than the automatic
and get this revs only 1900 rpm at 60 mph a huge difference compared to the auto 5 speed.
I was pleasantly surprised with the manual pro 4 x model very quiet and smooth on road a real mountain goat off road. pro 4 x standard tires spot on
I love this truck I have a Pro-4x 2017 as well but I wish that payload was a little bit more.
TFLnow
You guys didn't state whether its a long bed or short bed Frontier.
It's a short bed. If you look in front of the rear wheel, not much distance too the cab.
What do you guys think about just linking to a "how to score" video in the description rather than explaining each time- it gets a little repetitive.
What is song's title of 0:35
yall should do a highway mpg test on this frontier
Would i be able to pull a 26 ft travel trailer with my 2012 sv frontier? The trailer is 4400 pounds dry weight, i just dont know if the length makes a diffrence
A mid size truck is good for safely towing up to a 3500 lb trailer. Max. Mid size trucks dont have large braking systems.
Any news on the ZR2 colorado?.
tommy hammond Yeah, it's already recalled.
Troy Strain I can't wait till the ZR2 finally hits the off road, i will be checking the forums to see how that front locker and the rest of the truck is going to hold up
Troy Strain Really!?. where did you hear that?.
I bought a salvage 2014 nissan CC SV with package and had only 530 mileages on it! To make a long story short, i just had a baby boy, no time to fix it, my grandma passed away had to take care of alot of things.. so i decide to get a good running truck for now which i got 2015 same as above and love it ever since.. i was thinking to get a pro-4x but really i not worry abt the leather, sunroof, roof rack and locker cuz i can put locker in myself but like i will?!?! Lol i need to fix up my 2014 when i got time!
Just bought the 2019 4x4 crew cab sv model. Love it
Do you do the downhill runs in a 2wheel mode or 4? Would it help braking if the truck would be in a 4wheel mode?
Anze Weichardt 2wd on dry pavement and no, it wouldn't affect braking since the tires aren't slipping.
Amazing review 👍
Old maybe but still much more reliable than Chevy and GM products
and at least 10K$ cheaper
