When I learned that there is a new version of the Astra coming out and I have checked out the design of it, I was instantly blown away. FINALLY, a car (and an EV for that matter) that doesn't look too dated or too futuristic, but it has the right balance between the two. Open really nailed the exterior design of the Astra for sure. But my absolute shock of surprise came when it turned out that the Astra is coming out in as station wagon EV as well... OH MY GOSH! Finally, an affordable and highly practical EV that is NOT a crossover or an SUV. I am looking very much forward to the first reviews of this car!
The transmission tunnel is not wasted space on the EMP2 platform. The space is used for part of the battery, which means that you have proper leg room on the back seats, which you don't ha e when the battery is under the floor.
Hey Electric Viking, please remember about MG’s electric estate vehicle. It is available for purchase in the UK for last couple of years.
The transmission tunnel doesn't house the transmission even in the gas powered car since it is a front wheel drive car...it is necessary to provide structural rigidity and probably the reason why it is retained
So its proof of the lack of engineering skills.
exhaust tunnel.
The transmission tunnel houses the exhaust system. That is the second largest part of every fossil car.
Cars with transmission tunnels have an in-line mounted engine. Transvers mount engine cars have no transmission tunnel. 🧐
@@markhartung1504 Yes, of course. There is only one problem. VW did not hear of this law.
from europe...impressed with the astra wagon but waiting for the prices. it shouldnt cost much more than the mg5 if they want to be competitive
Opel Astra is really a fantastic car. It came in India in 1996. However, since it was under GM, it didn't last long nor the spare parts were readily available which were in fact expensive, and not even were there that many service and repair centres for the brand.
Yet, it was GM. Now Opel is under Stellantis. Two brands under Stellantis is operating in India -- Jeep and Citroën. If people get that very demand for Opel, then I could get a glimpse of the car on the Indian roads. We know Opel is a very renowned brand and Indians love it.
Been waiting for an EV of comparable size, and this one even comes with buttons where others use a touchscreen only approach? Definitely going to get a very close look at that. (Tested the ID3/4 cockpits once, and absolutely hated it)
MG4, BYD Atto, Cupra, even Peugeot E-208 or much better cars. Who buys VW if he does not have to?
Waiting for a decent EV estate to arrive in UK (other than MG5). Will be checking this out if it’s here next year.
ID3 is 3 years old and looks still very nice in comparison to Astra. Frankly not better the Astra.
I'll be driving the Astra hatch PHEV probably for about 20k and then I hope to transition to the EV version.
Cool. I'm looking forward to their next gen ground up EVs. I wonder if that will be a manta or or insignia kind of model.
We'll see.
The selling of EVs on range will result in wagon/estates becoming more popular again. ICE SUVs are just heavier and high ground clearance to support 4WD, they tend to have less space inside than estates. My old Volvo 940 has more space than the biggest SUVs today, and with 7 seat option.
Always love your (prolific...!) content, Sam 🙂
It's funny though, whenever I hear someone say that "a ground-up EV is better than a shared platform one", I immediately think of the original Hyundai Ioniq Electric - one of THE highest efficiency drivetrains in any affordable EV and WAY superior to (at least, so far...) any of the 'ground-up' Hyundai / Kia EVs currently on sale...! 😉
Hey Sam how can the Astra have a transmission tunnel if it was a front wheel drive previously before being converted to an EV?
It uses the EMP2 platform, which is used across Stellantis and even by Toyota apparently. It supports front wheel drive and four wheel drive cars.
Thanks for quoting Miles, Sam.
Thanks Mate!
Estates have an aero advantage
Wish the big T would make one
Same went for eGolf based on .... MQB - Golf!
Astra's "disadvantage" is, on the contrary, a great advantage if you think about what is really important - safety...
That the entire floor consists of a battery, pose a safety risk in an accident, cars where the batteries only occupy limited areas like in the Astra, are safer as there is more sheet metal to dent before the batteries take the hit, therefore an electric car with the entire floor as a battery is a worse car than one where the battery is smaller.
Well I prefer to lose one seat altogether than making the whole floor higher compromising comfort in all rear seats.
Either of these models would be my choice in the segment. Both are beautiful as opposed to the globular Id3. And there are reports of quite serious trim and fitting issues with VW ev's besides the much maligned infotainment system.
Oh boy if you think those things will be better in an Opel you are in for a surprise. I‘ve been driving a corsa e quite a bit because we use it at work and everytime I use it I facepalm so hard I get a headache.
Hi Sam, couple of things on this video. Check out the MG5, a dedicated EV mid size wagon that’s been around for a while. Also the Astra has always been FWD, so if their is a hump in the floor, it is not a transmission tunnel. I have to say that looks wise this new Astra is a stunner, considering how boring these cars were when part of GM.
Exhaust tunnel!
Practicality: Look at the hight of the boot from the MG and compare this with the front wield drive Opel E. There is a huge difference. Creating from the Netherland.
Cool, I've got an Ampera this would be a great next car. I live in the UK 👍
You can't even order in Belgium until Autumn 2023 very interested in the tourer version.
I also like that 70s-face of todays opelz.
I’m waiting for the real Astra consumtion and space inside to really compare both cars! At the moment, i prefer Astra Design too!
A transmission tunnel adds a great deal of rigidity to the chassis as it is just a dirty great beam. As long as the batteries fit I cannot agree with you that it's a disadvantage. I never have anyone in the fifth seat/armrest. They're uncomfortable besides.
it is a front wheel drive car so it is not a transmission tunnel. It is for the exhaust of gas powered version.
@@stateless4255 The exhaust pipe is routed along it too.
Transmission tunnel in an BEV with no ICE transmission. I'd take one if they gave it to me...
THANKS SAM, FOR SHARING ANOTHER 😎 COOL OPTION TO GO ELECTRIC ⚡️
Thanks Mate!
You need to let go of building an EV on a gas chassis. At lest they making an EV and the specs look real good.
Stellantis have been hedging thier bets on Evs by in effect retrofitting petrol based platforms. Consquently althought its quick and cheap to do you don't get the full advantage of owning an EV.
USA available ?
Not keen on the too busy for me rear styling. When the get around to a bespoke electric it could be a great car.
Sam, I'm a little disappointed, your videos are usually well researched, but you slipped up a bit here, the platform these cars are built on is not an ICE platform adapted for EV's, it was ground up developed as a tri-fuel platform (EV/Petrol/Diesel) and this is why so many vehicles on this platform are available with all 3 fuels and from the reviews I've seen they all have excellent weight distribution and handling regardless of the fuel type. As the ICE versions are FWD the "transmission tunnel" actually only held an exhaust pipe, and from my understanding the EV version it's used for the wiring loom, allowing the battery pack area to be thinner, so it's not "empty".
Why would anyone buy a FWD electric car? Wait until they design it properly and put the motor on the back axle. Better handling, better turning circle and no more damned CV joints.
Opel is now owned by the PSA group who are not exactly known for quality or durability, I think i'd pass on it.
I wonder when these cars will make it to Australia? Gone are the days when we would get a Holden version of most Opel models, unfortunately.
You can Get the Peugeot 308 which is basicaly same car, i like the Peugeot styling more
@@danielstefanovic2604 I used to have a 2008 Peugeot 308 1.6 HDi station wagon. Beautiful car, until I parked it under a gum tree which fell and wrote it off. True story.
A higher riding car is better where snow falls.
I think the MG5 ev wagon looks a better car than this astra estate. Enjoyed ur review 👍
With all due respect , really? 🤔 beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I think the mg looks like a 10 years old grandma car and the opal is much more attractive, almost exciting looking 😏
So what other shortcuts has Opel taken - I guess you will find out if you buy one...
Sam. People with bad backs and minor disabilities find it much easier to climb into a higher bed and taller vehicles such as an SUV.
At this point in time ANY new hatchback is better than the ID.3. 😂
so when they ass an ICE into an EV, where do they put the battery pack? it cant be in the best location.
So, you think this car is much better than the dedicated EV, VW.ID.3 due to looks??
I agree it's a great looking car, better still in Peugeot 308 form.
The VW ID.3 is way, way superior in any objective way you want to measure.
1st to give a thumbs up 👍
And 1st to be 1st 🤗 🥇
Makes it easy for me, I don't follow *MLB* Baseball anymore.
The ID4 looks better, inside and out. The only reason you hate VW is because it's the biggest threat to Tesla, in which you said you have some investment.
I hope AOC gets a good VW ev😁.
Re-Release that Mk1 Manta SR.
I'd sell my first born for one !!
Hmm the first wagon ? MG5 ?
Its same car as Peugeot e308 its the same Stellantis group...
The Astra looks loads better than the ID3. Vauxhall can't keep up with the demand for the full EV Mokka/Corsa as it is, so the Astra EV pricing will be on the high side.
I have 20 year old car I never 🚫change transmission oil 🛢️🛢️🛢️🛢️ blaaa blaaa
Compared to the Golf, the ID.3 looks like a joke. It seems that VW never intended to make good looking electric cars. Guess they still wanted to keep selling the better looking ICE vehicles - fatal decision in my opinion. Opel is doing a way better job.
I thought Opal was dead ⚰️⚰️⚰️
. !!! *"**#NOPE**"* ❗️❗️❗️
They have no clue what EVs are about. Opal is throwing crap 💩 at the wall and is hoping something will stick. 🤷🏼♀️
Brands names mean nothing. They are bought and sold on a regular basis. Our mental residual mental attachment makes them worth buying. But it only an illusion.
OPAL is a gemstone. OPEL make cars.
So many EVs, so few -- none IMO -- holding a candle to Tesla. I compare Model Y to other EVs and burners on Twitter at #ModelYSupremacy
And is cost 45 k euros...thanks, not.
...and both are trash.
With all these electric cars you're going to start seeing the cancer rate to go way up. You're sitting on a high voltage battery for 20 hours a week pretty much a no-brainer
I'll pass. It is not worth it
No Opel ev is better than an id 3. It drives just like an ice car. That's dead boring and an epic failure.
Good thing Rivian has there head on vs the RUclipsr here. Transmisions will be in the next genration of E transportation. Get a wrench and a clue or just stop making propganda!
