Mick Taylor was the Stones' guitarist for about 5 years after Brian Jones left, 1969 to 1974, when they made some of their best music. I think my favorite album is probably Sticky Fingers, and Taylor does great work on that one.

The second guitarist is Mick Taylor, an official member of the Stones from 1969-1974. He replaced founding member Brian Jones, who died shortly after his dismissal from the band in 1969. Taylor was from John Mayall’s band, the Bluesbreakers, and helped elevate the Stones to unprecedented heights. His playing was exceptionally fluid and melodic, and he was noted for his unassuming presence on stage -- standing in the back and playing beautiful leads. Taylor left the band toward the end of 1974 and was ultimately replaced by Ronnie Wood, who is still in the band today. Unlike Brian and Ronnie, Taylor never embodied the rock star persona and charisma those two possessed, but he represented the Golden Age of the Stones.

I used to go to The Marquee Club between around 1978 to 1984 when it was on Wardour Street and I was living in London . . saw some great bands.
If you haven't dug deeper into The Rolling Stones you haven't really heard rock and roll. My all time favorite live rock performance on film is their 1964 appearance at the TAMI Show. They bring the house down. The crowd is totally overwhelmed. And before The Stones they got to see James Brown! The best one two punch in the history of concert going. But if you're new to the Stones I'd start with the Sticky Fingers album, which also came out in 1971. It kicks off with "Brown Sugar", but the albums has so much variety on it -- blues, ballads, R&B, psychedelia, etc. The Stones have about 5 must hear albums but I'd start there.

Great performance! As a side note, the "second" guitarist Mick Taylor did an awesome job on the psychedelic blues record "Blues From Laurel Canyon" by John Mayall. One of my favorite records from the 60:s. Taylor is a very underrated guitarist. Before Taylor, John Mayalls band included Eric Clapton and then Peter Green. So it was big shoes to fill. I'll recommend "Vacation" from that album , for some guitar bliss.

I was not a big Stones fan until later in my life. I grew to respect Keith Richards understated riffs in the songs. They are heavily influenced by the blues and it comes across in their sound. I would recommend watching the documentary Muscle Schoals about a famous recording studio in a small town in Alabama where the Stones recorded the famous Sticky Fingers album. It a great history of the late 60’s early mid 70’s and the amazing artists/albums and music that was recorded there.
They were always a five piece, Mick Taylor here was the second guitarist in that spot next to Kieth, right before Ron Wood took over in '74, and is still with them today.

Nasty, filthy, sleazy - EVERYTHING the Rolling Stones should be! Love this video. Nick, if you want to hear an evolved version of this song just 2 years later, find the 'Brussels Affair' recording from 1973 (2020 Goats Head Soup album reissue) on youtube. Would love to see you react to this version - no one has done it to my knowledge.
I don't think anyone has reacted to anything from the Brussels Affair recording, which, in my mind, represents peak Stones as a live act.

I have owned a 1969 Ampeg Dan Armstrong guitar (like you see here) since 1974. I bought it after seeing Gimmie Shelter. I just had to have one. Too cool. A clear guitar. I still have it.
I don't see too many Stones reactions - hope it doesn't get blocked. I'm here early so I'm going to see it anyway!
It's too bad the cameraman (or editor) shows Keith Richards so much when Mick Taylor is soloing. Anyway, his 5 year Stones period was one reason I put a 19 year old Mick Taylor playing lead on John Mayall's "Vacation" on that blues marathon. During his stint with the Stones I could look forward to some decent lead guitar. His vibrato with or without the slide was very recognizable. Taylor's playing on the live Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! album is the highlight of the album for me. His solo on "Time Waits For No One" on the It's Only Rock And Roll album shows he wanted to break out of the "blues box" (which might have caused some conflict). There's a video of him playing on a live Little Feat song, as Lowell George played on a Mick Taylor album.
Aside from a couple of tunes like their works when Brian Jones was a member but really something to us elders that they still perform

In the sixties a lot of singers also played harmonica.

Hi again. Love this ! Always good to see The Stones live. I have a dvd box set I highly recommend of 4 discs called " Four Flicks " covering a very unique World Tour in 2002 / 3. The concept was > They have done a Stadium Tour .... An Arena Tour ... & a small venue Theatre Tour...but...never all three during one World Tour.....and they filmed the whole thing, inc' behind the scenes documentaries. Over 9 hours of footage. The concerts do not have repeat tracks, inc never before recorded. A must for any Stones fan. Great stereo or 5.1 sound....Did you see the recent tv series " My Life as a Rolling Stone" ? Fascinating and brilliant. Each episode concentrates on each band member individually interviewed....inc' the Late Charle Watts. I grew up with The Rolling Stones as much as I did The Beatles. They were just a big part of the music scene in the 60's and I love their early material ... Paint It Black / It's all over now / The Last Time / Lady Jane / We Love You and many more 60's classics. When they were looking for a replacement for Brian Jones, they asked Eric Clapton to join, but he was busy putting together his new band, Blind Faith. He suggested that they try Mick Taylor. They wound up recording my 3 favorite Stones albums with him... Get Yer Ya-yas Out. Sticky Fingers and Goats Head Soup.
Great video. Many things are cool here. Keith in full debauchery, drinking straight from the bottle, playing the clear acrylic guitar. Mick Taylor, who is my favorite lead/2nd guitar of theirs. Mick Jaggar in great shape and voice. And Bill Wyman!

It was great to see The Stones from this era (1971) playing live. I was never a huge Stones fan either Nick but did prefer their 60's music. I think after 'Exile on Main St.' I lost touch. But I loved seeing and hearing Mick Taylor again, and I didn't realise that they were still playing venues like The Marquee in 1971. This must have been one of the last times they played there as they soon became tax-exiles and only played huge venues. When I lived in London in 1974-75, I went to the Marquee often. It was a very small, intimate venue in Wardour Street in Soho, and in the 60's it was probably the most important venue in London. Every major British band of that era paid their dues at The Marquee, particularly bands like The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Beck, Graham Bond Organisation, The Stones themselves, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and Yes. By the time I went there it was more a place for aspiring musicians or smaller bands that weren't in the top division. The bands I remember seeing included Rory Gallagher, Argent, Greenslade, The Kiki Dee Band, Chicken Shack amongst others lost in the fog of time. It was small, hot and sweaty, but always a great night out. I think it closed in the 80's, but it was hugely important to the evolution of rock music in the UK and around the world. I believe the inflatable mic stand was used on the steel wheels tour about 1985 through 88 something like that.
Wasn't that difficult to get lost in my hometown of Boston, MA (of strangler fame). No celebritiies to navigate for, however. The Stones are remarkablely durable.
I still think you should listen to the version of this song from the Get Yer Ya Yas Out, which is live from Madison Square Garden. Taylor and Richards get such a groove going it's just stupid. Part of the appeal is the audience's responses throughout the song, not much from this version and I think Mick really feeds off that crowd dynamic. There's no accompanying video but it doesn't need one, it's just that good.
I love this performance! Live, I've heard only the Altamont performance and the one on Hot Rocks. This one is just as good. I'm sure they performed it quite a lot between 1970-72 or so, and it's not really a complicated song so it should be tight. I do love this song, especially the slow part when the power chords come in 😁
You should check out the great 1969 live performance on the Stones album "Get Yer Ya-Yas Out." Anything on that album is great, including a fantastic guitar -driven version of Sympathy For the Devil.

I love their playing on the 1971 Tour of England. However this one was a bit "lacklustre performance" as one of the people commented below. To the best of my knowledge the backstory on that is that this film was part of a contractual commitment they still had to their outgoing manager Allen Klein. i.e Do a Performance Film. (By this point they had already launched Rolling Stones Records under new management). So the story goes they did not rehearse for this. They didn't really care. Keith Richards shows up like 30 mins before they gig - unshowered and unshaven for like 3 days. They did not care. I love how they are screwing with each other on stage at 19:30. Keith throws Mick a dummy and throws it right back at him. Anyway the "second guitar player" is the great Mick Taylor who joined the band in the summer of 1969 after Brian Jones death.

A much better live version of Midnight Rambler is from the album "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out", recorded in December 1969 at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Please react to that version.
It is great to see one of my favourite guitarists Mick Taylor in his prime. It is hard to believe he went from this and earning millions to being destitute and living in a old run down house. So sad.
Mick Taylor was recommended to The Rolling Stones by John Mayal. Better guitarrista then Keith. The first confrontation they have was about the type of guitar that Mick used, sounded better then his acrilic body one. The second time was in the doubling of the instrument and voices of tracks recorded in tours called Get that ya-ya out of the way. Mick mix his track over Keith's almost muting him. Keith complained to Mick Jagger and Mick Taylor was fired. Who they bring? Drugs and alcohol (besides blood transfusions b'cause heroin kills the white cells in your blood) "body" Ronnie Wood ex-Faces (with Rod Stewart). In this video you can tell that Keith had his guitar out of tune or he keep hitting the wrong notes. That son can be find in the Beggar's banquet album. A great one.

Great choice of song. But really a lack luster performance. The DVD is really good but this track was not the best of the gig.
Maybe they are allergic to good music.
Keith's playing here is insanely good. Mick Taylor is great. But Keith is just laying it down.
This is far better than the polished "yacht rock" of Steely Dan. This is raw. This is how rock music should be played. Drugs. Sex.
